I didn't know you could click to highlight, that's interesting

Ok, opinion needed. Edits to questions by the OP are subject to review now. An OP makes an edit that should have been a comment. Yay, nay?

I don't understand.
Are you saying that they are subject to review or are you asking if they should be?
and what about the commentary?

I'm saying they are subject to review, and I don't have an issue with that.
Let's say you run across a pending edit to a question, and the edit was made by the questions's original asker. The edit is questionable, in that it really should have been made as a comment to the question, rather than added to the question itself.

@MichaelPetrotta You can make edits to your own posts without having to go through review regardless of your rep. It has always been this way.

@ChrisF: not true now, apparently.

12:06 AM
@ChrisF I would imagine they would've changed that, but it may have been unintentional

@MichaelPetrotta Eh - so if you've got less than 2K rep you can't edit your own posts?
That must be a bug

@MichaelPetrotta Nope, the only reason that might happen if they accidentally deleted the cookie that holds their account data

I don't know what triggered this (now difficult-to-find) instance. I remember that the OP had 1 rep, and may have been unregistered. You're right that the OP may have made the edit with a different account, for the reason you mention.

@YiJiang if they're using Chrome/supports-local-storage does it still rely on a cookie?

@drachenstern Think so, what difference would it make any way?

12:08 AM
What's even worse is when other people try and edit in comments:
5
Q: Suggested edits - comment smuggling

Phenomenon: A low rep user uses suggested edit to add a comment to an answer\question. Is anyone else seeing this? Example: http://stackoverflow.com/edit-suggestions/1832

Both can be cleared just as easily

@YiJiang localstorage doesn't get deleted like cookies do does it?

Just tried this on Wordpress where I've only got 103 rep & I could edit my own questions without problem.

But anyway, if the edit is like a reply to someone in the comments, I'd reject it.
To answer your actual question, @MichaelPetrotta

@drachenstern It can be, Firefox for instance let's you clear localStorage data in the same panel that let's you clear cookies

12:09 AM
If it adds more information in comment-like form...perhaps allow it anyway, then edit the question to clean it up.

@YiJiang oh yeah, that's true
forgot about that
@TimStone I support this

@TimStone Hmmm, how did Chibacity's account got deleted?

@YiJiang I was curious about that too, seems to be happening relatively frequently.
Several people suddenly disappeared, heh.

12:14 AM
I'm going to assume that it's related to this post:

Q: Thoughts on Censorship

I recently saw a post where the OP was bemoaning the fact that it can be difficult to get a good look-in with answers in tags where there are users that are fast (FGITW), really on the button, and have high reps. Basically tags where a few users are all over them. Fair enough point for discussion...

Oh yeah, I remember that. Chibacity was getting awful tetchy in there, now deleted.

@TimStone sounds like some gangster film

@MichaelPetrotta surely he didn't delete his account just on account of that!

People have done more for less.
But I certainly don't know.

@AidenBell It'll be the sequel of the original SO movie.

12:17 AM
You can't delete your own account - you have to ask the mods to do it for you

@MichaelPetrotta Yeah, it just seems most likely to me.

Ooookay ... watching TruTV and Most Dangerous drivers .... wow
If you guys want something to watch that'll make you raise your eyebrows repeatedly, that is the channel to be watching

That stuff will rot your brain... but I love it too

Just watched a truck skid across a median and into a tractor trailer due to ice, then get out and walk away due to his airbags working

Did you see the video the other week of the people driving in Canada who had to swerve out of the way of this tractor trailer that slammed through the median coming in the opposite direction?

Also, woah:

@Tim: what, like that's never happened to you?

@TimStone no, was it a viral on youtube or on something like that show I'm talking about

@MichaelPetrotta Nah, in my case the car just rolled over three and a half times.
@drachenstern I saw it on MSNBC, lemme see if I can find it again.

I thought my jacknifing with a uhaul behind me and s-zagging three full times without flipping or rolling was bad enough

12:23 AM
@TimStone (This was a long time ago, was travelling to my grandparents with my mom and sister, she hit black ice and we went into the ditch in the middle of the highway...Good thing for the snow, heh)

Ok, lessee. Coming back from skiing when I was a kid, we skid into some boulders and I hit the seat in front of me and rip my top braces off my teeth

@MichaelPetrotta Holy crap, that sounds like it might have hurt a bit.. O_o
@AidenBell Hahah

@TimStone - there you gone, laugh-at-one-get-one-free

@AidenBell They were probably more productive because they didn't have Eclipse ;)

@AidenBell Aw, I missed it.

my_nice_struct foo(){
  my_nice_struct bar;
  //initialize bar
  return bar;
} //this is valid C right? right?

I would have watched that link, but something was offensive about it

adblock is your friend

Happy smiling people!

12:37 AM
@badp my_nice_struct is a a typedef-ed struct?

@TimStone yes

@badp Looks alright to me then, but I'm no C programmer either.

@TimStone oh, okay, because one post on /. mentioned that passing pointers to automatic variables gives undefined behaviour

Can only watch so many of those kinds of videos

12:39 AM
@AidenBell ...Wow, that's pretty crazy. :/
And now, dinner.

Saw one that captured a guy dying. That's a bit much.

@badp - sorry, that is valid C
Missed you there

yaaay
I guess I'm still confused by how arrays and structs arguments are passed in C

@badp - pointers my friend

I keep thinking, if I just name them I get their address, so I must be passing their address

12:44 AM
With no more gen2 i7 systems for sale, I choose to feel proud to have one running.

@AidenBell then that code wouldn't work, because I'd be returning a pointer to a freed struct

@badp - no that code is fine, I was making an unrelated point about arrays

@AidenBell er, so if instead of a struct I had an array...

You would return a pointer to an array in reality

it'd still be valid though
or wouldn't it?

12:47 AM
In C, if it compiles and doesn't segfault, it's valid :P
You can return arrays and pointers and structs ... so yes

typedef char t_block[BLOCK_SIZE];
t_block get_copy(t_block data){
    t_block output;
    memcpy(data, output, BLOCK_SIZE);
    return output;
}

Yes, that is fine

phew

Good evening everyone

Interesting decision by my ice maker:
I've always felt my ice cubes could benefit from hooks

@TimStone holy crap

I would like spherical ice "cubes". I like my drinks cold, but not staggeringly cold, and I think the minimal surface area presented by spheres would reduce the heat transfer.
large, too

@MichaelMrozek So they can both numb and cause pain at the same time.

Two features I'm working on for the elections page, hrm... the ability to see stats from old election results and to add any user on the site to the list of candidates for comparison

@MichaelPetrotta Wait, what? :P

@Tim: um, nevermind. I can't read. You're clearly responding to @MichaelMrozek.
when I thought you were responding to me, with his name.

Indeed. I was going to reply to you saying that they make things for round ice somewhere, but I thought maybe you already knew.

I'm behind the curve on major-appliance technology.

Tell me, does the /election page really show all previous elections or just the most recent one
Because I'm pretty sure SO has had more than one election before, using the same system, hmmm

1:21 AM
@YiJiang I assume it's supposed to show all of them, but there aren't any sites that have more than one

@YiJiang The system is brand new?

This is the first time SO has used this system, they just finished coding it in the last few month
Math was the first time it was ever used, on 2 Dec

Hmm? So how were elections conducted before?

It was done via meta posts a few times, and there was at least one throwaway solution that used a special SO page, but that was a long time ago
Here's one of the old nomination threads:

That is incorrect. I have plenty of desk space now. (:

@RebeccaChernoff what laptop/dock?
So now that the election is over do we still need the election page pinned in here? Just out of curiousity ...

@Earlz lol

3:24 AM
@Earlz Duh. The poster doesn't realise that once you license something, it can't be rescinded?

Seems illogical. Hmmm... Pekka posted a question on Meta
1
Q: Does the CC-Wiki license allow the licensor to withdraw their content at will?

PekkaHans Passant quotes from the CC-Wiki license: I think there's a problem here. The full text of the Creative Commons License under which SOIS publishes your answer has this clause in section 7b, Termination: Subject to the above terms and conditions, the license granted here ...

Apparently he's been running down the list deleting them all ...

@drachenstern His account will probably just be locked, and all the (non-abusive) content restored.

@ChrisJesterYoung that's actually what's occurring right now

I am not a lawyer, but, as far as I know, license grants, especially using an open-source licence like CC-Wiki, cannot be rescinded.

3:27 AM
Well, at least this gives the new mods something to do...

And the text quoted in that MSO question seems to support that.
Again, IANAL.

Yeah, I think the "stop distributing the work" refers to their right to be able to remove the content from their own website, not the right to force the content from being removed from other sites.

Q: Text on the markdown help page is too large

Closure CowboyI might be a bit bold to tag this as a bug, but I'm pretty sure this is one. Why is the text on the markdown help pages (example) larger than the text everywhere else? This includes the "notification bar" at the top — it, too, is larger than it is anywhere else.

gets out his connect the dots marker

@drachenstern Is it? I never noticed it, hmmm

Which dots?
@YiJiang It seems to be accurate ... I never noticed either

He's now compared him not being allowed to vandalize licenced work to rape... :/

Q: Can bounties be awarded multiple times by the same person on the same question ?

SathyaIs there any restriction to prevent multiple bounties ( not simultaneously) being awarded to different answers on the same question ? i.e., on a question I had asked - I want to set multiple bounties since I've received 2 awesome answers. Can I set award a bounty on answer A first, and then set...

I'm surprised @Sathya doesn't know which means it is likely an uncovered topic

@drachenstern Definitely true, I have stuck multiple bounties on one of my Meta questions before

So you can only have one active, but you can award more than one

@TimStone Erhm... no

Ah, then that's proof enough though.
I thought that was the case, but wanted to make sure, heh.

Is there an online spreadsheet solution I can paste tabular data into like I do with Excel and it gets converted into spreadsheet cells?

Google docs doesn't do that?

idk, I haven't tried it
figured I would ask first

It does.

4:40 AM
It does
haha, thanks

Hmm. Maybe I should poke around in bios.

I just wonder from the three skus if you can do it with any but the top sku
I couldn't tell from their website.

@RebeccaChernoff When you figure out your monitor business, feel free to figure out where in the code chat does .html() .html() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .attr() .empty() .append() .attr() .empty() .append() .html() .html() .empty() .append() .html() .html() .attr(). It's like the Konami code of jQuery.
4

@TimStone are you trying to figure out where that occurs or why?

Where, hahah.
They aren't chained though, the calls just happen to happen in that order.
But it's super far down the call list to use the debugger.

4:45 AM
in her code or the SE code?

It's in the main chat code.
(somewhere)
Well, it could be inside of jQuery too, I really don't know. It isn't in the userscript.

@TimStone Yet

> http://or.sstatic.net/chat/Js/master-chat.js this file?

Yeah

what are you researching?

4:47 AM
Actually, never mind. I made a mistake in making sure it's not in the userscript, whoops.

the userscript doesn't call "empty"

Yeah, but it could have called jQuery code that called empty internally.

true

But yeah, it's nothing in the userscript.
Actually lawlz, I guess I do have the stack trace.

but .empty( only occurs four times in jquery.min.js and five times in the master-chat.js

4:49 AM
Let's see if I can match those calls to the call tree..

What am I looking for?

@RebeccaChernoff A good listener?

either the ellipsis function or the $('#add-user-search-result') I'm guessing....
or something to do with $('#tabcomplete')

@MichaelMrozek |:

@RebeccaChernoff Basically livequery bails on certain calls to certain intercepted jQuery functions, and I'm trying to narrow down the working example.

4:53 AM
Oh, so it's probably happening in jQuery

Chrome inexplicably takes all of the variables from the previous scope and points them at DOMWindow when this happens O_o

It is probably on an exception

This is going to be a pain in the buttocks.
At least the formulas work :/

Three of the four .empty( in the minified source seem to happen on exception catches

But like the blockquote bug, this is also a Heisenbug...any attempt to catch the exception or run the debugger through the code causes a long enough of a delay to prevent the method from failing. >_>

4:56 AM

@mootinator Noooo, don't do it!
Excel..so...much...evil

I knooow.

I have a Java class that uses Apache POI to write out an Excel report. 1284 lines of code, ick.

@TimStone This is why you do not write straight Java code. I have code that uses POI too, but it's written in JRuby.
Much much much more succinct.

This is my ingenious code for the day:
ws.Cells[i, lastcolumn].Formula = String.Format("=" + totalFormula, headers.Select((x, j) => ws.Cells.GetSubrangeAbsolute(i, column + j, i, column + j)).ToArray());

4:59 AM
is still unsure if this was a serious help with the codez request or not

That's not Ruby! Fail. :-P

Hmmm, 144 today on MSO ... I might get mortarboard on MSO before getting mortarboard on SO :\

Since my first impulse is to remove all the spaces, I should probably spend less time on codegolf.se
