How to use HyperDev with Firefox? by l0b0 on webapps.stackexchange.com

get that tag creation badge: stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/hyperdev

user315433
Unlikely to get answered, btw. Since Web Apps isn't about development, it doesn't attract the users who'd answer questions about usage of web apps that are aimed at developers (GitHub is a prime example). On topic but hopeless.

No questions to attach a tag to, though.

> Which is part of why NARQ closures tend to elicit arguments citing the prominent inclusion of question marks, rather than legitimate attempts to correct problems.
I think this is a deciding point where SO went the wrong way and put itself on the path to doom.
Instead of trying to focus on improving questions, they should have left the close system as it was and tried to get rid of extraneous comments.

@Pandya that said...
@Jaydles since this is long done, I don't think any further answers are required here. Do you think this should be closed? (not sure with what reason though, maybe even put historical lock?) — Shadow Wizard 13 secs ago

Q: What is a historical lock, and what is it used for?

This will prevent new answers, voting, and comments. After all, it served its purpose.

@ShadowWizard I must say that of all the ways one may have to get "Alicorn", probably Frank one was the most obscure one. I wasn't even expecting @ProgramFOX kept that trigger too.

@Derpy you... talk about WAG?
@Derpy SharePoint?

@ShadowWizard yep. I still check from time to time if anyone got that spell I left for you.
@ShadowWizard What gave you the idea :P? Maybe the fact that it doesn't make sense at all to have all that multiple cases defined at XML Schema level???

@Derpy but it's ages since anyone got any spell, or played WAG for that matter...

@ShadowWizard yep, looking at it it was dated February.
oh, well... ignore that then. My bad

@Derpy lol, no, just wondered why after all this time to mention this. :)
@Derpy this, and the title "Simple Types" followed by list of types that are anything but simple. Typical to Microsoft.

12:05 PM
@ShadowWizard because I miss-read the date, that's way. Anyway, it's funny. The same pony is the cause of both of the "unexpected" spell awards. Thanks to that one, it is pretty easy to trigger both the unicorn and the alicorn one without realizing it.
Well, I doubt that the missing one will ever be found.
Which is a pity in a way. And boring.

@Derpy true. WAG lost its glory... though there can always be new players... who knows. :)

Question regarding convention for meta sites: If downvote indicates disagreement, how can one indicate that one thinks it's a good topic but that one disagrees with the specific proposal?
If there's strong consensus the Q will end up distinguished in rankings by vote. If average view is zero but there is great interest it will not appear to be interesting by any visible summary measure. Unless people are encouraged to use "Favorite" on meta Q's to indicate they think they are good topics....

@feetwet totally up to the voter. Personally I will downvote, to indicate the disagreement, then add a comment or answer explaining why I do find it a good topic and ways to improve it, if possible.

@ShadowWizard basically I want to ask like:
"Is it ok to" or "Can a community" provide such stuff on Help-Center?

@Pandya well, since there is one, the answer is obviously "yes" - question then is "how", and that's what @Oded explained in his answer.

12:19 PM
ok.

(Generally speaking,I don't really like Yes/No questions on MSE - trying to take the next step when I see those. :))

Thanks for improving my question. @ShadowWizard

My pleasure, @Pandya
Huh, good point. Well, guess OP here can ask in the per site meta of Hinduism or in its chat room. — Shadow Wizard 17 secs ago
@Pandya ^

@ShadowWizard Now, I think I should remove the line "Can a community (say Hinduism) decide and write such stuff (if worthy to provide according to the type of site) on help-center?" from question.

@Pandya no, better leave it for sake of completeness. Oded did say "This means that the community can indeed decide to write such stuff..." which is a direct answer to this.
Instead of just "Is this possible?" question it's now "Is this possible, and if so how?" question.

12:24 PM
good-point

Yeah, the feature exists, so it should be used. I expect most moderators are not even aware of it (all they see is a tiny "edit" link just under the search box...)
2

Well, it's just one of those things passing "from ear to ear", as the idiom I know says.... :)

@Oded then I think this post will aware them

@Pandya not really, they probably don't roam MSE.
Like I said you have to post in the per site meta or chat.

Some of them, certainly. I might just post that question in TL, to raise awareness.

12:26 PM
Pin it!
hmm... @Oded now I'm curious, since everyone in TL got diamonds, can anyone pin any message? :)

Yep, as far as I know.

Nice!

they can also all unpin the messages, so :p

PandyaI've visited the help-center of one the sites, and noticed a "useful resources" section: I'm surprised to see it, since I don't see it in the help center of other sites. @Bart no such option in the UI but yes, I'm almost sure I was able to kick myself using direct AJAX in the past. ;)

Please tell me someone said "go kick yourself" before :D

@Pandya even better would be starting a new question on the per-site meta titled "Please add useful resources to the help center", with what you have in mind, then share that one in the site chat.

Is Stack Overflow losing its shine? was closed as a duplicate. Kinda ironic...
@MadaraUchiha There seems to be a gap in the notions of expertise, participation, and judgement here. There seems to be a view that gold badge holders in a tag are a kind of mutant or idiot savant who may have a lot of knowledge in that tag (except for those upvotes they got by rep-whoring and vampire-feeding), but are otherwise basically unqualified, or at least no more qualified than anyone else, to exercise any judgment about site content, other than hammering duplicates. — torazaburo 2 hours ago

Adjective: exclusive ‎(comparative more exclusive, superlative most exclusive)
  1. (literally) Excluding items or members that do not meet certain conditions.
  2. (figuratively) Referring to a membership organisation, service or product: of high quality and/or reknown, for superior members only. A snobbish usage, suggesting that members who do not meet requirements, which may be financial, of celebrity, religion, skin colour etc., are excluded.
  3. Exclusive clubs tend to serve exclusive brands of food and drinks, in the same exorbitant price range, such as the 'finest' French châteaux.
  4. exclusionary
  5. whole, undivided, entire
(5 more not shown…)
Noun: exclusive ‎(plural exclusives)
  1. Information (or an artefact) that is granted or obtained exclusively.
  2. The editor agreed to keep a lid on a potentially distastrous political scoop in exchange for an exclusive of a happier nature
  3. (grammar) A word or phrase that restricts something, such as only, solely, or simply.

Soup opera starring: Jeff Bezos & Elon Musk, guest apparences: Richard Branson & Bas Lansdorp with title 'Mission to Mars'. It's a show about a bunch of successful entrepreneurs having this funny competition against each other, claiming to be better than their rivals and yet their toys has been bouncing around on earth for tens of years, getting nowhere near half way to Mars.

I wonder whether it's the personality of a hoarder - I like to keep things, be that items I own or animals. As a hoarder, I don't think sincere questions and answers should be discarded - they should be improved, classified, but not discarded.

But then again, a lot of the times people question my decisions because I keep what they consider to be pests alive.

3:12 PM
also, I don't see why people who are weak at programming deserve help less ...

user202362
It's almost like saying "we don't want poor people in this area, we only want the rich!"

user202362
poor or rich a metaphor for the amount of knowledge they already have

I don't think it's about weak/strong, but more about effort/laziness. Someone who is weak but willing to learn is appreciated, though they probably would have found their answers before asking. Lazy people on the other hand...

user202362
It might be true in some case. But generally a newbie programmer doesn't really know what they are looking for.

user202362
Most of the times they just want the program to work

@ShadowWizard I don't have details, but something tag related that Marc and Nick were working on. Seems to be OK now.

I wrote another chat userscript and this one doesn't cause trouble

hey all; just to say that the "filters" thing was totally me; it is (@rene) the new tag-engine that is to blame, but it isn't the GPU version yet (we don't have server hardware yet)
just my bad coding
2

@MarcGravell So the new tag engine is already in production? i.e. it should be "faster" (probably not noticeable though)?

the new tag engine is driving meta.stackoverflow.com ONLY

Ooh, server upgrades. I hope there'll be a blog post (with pics) about that

it turns out that when you turn it on for meta.stackexchange.com, then stackexchange.com starts using that too (by proxy), hence the fail

4:26 PM
Huh. The problems of having so many different sites. :P

basically, we have two separate services that expose the exact same API/protocol but on different ports; one port is v1, the next port down is v2
we were going to go "next port up", but it turns out the next port up is reserved and blocked by most browsers as it conflicts with a common protocol
@Quill I expect there will be; I'll leave the server porn to the SRE folks, though - I'm too far from the cages
but fun fact: the GTX 1080 rocks
"yes boss, there's totally a business need for this... totally"
(actually there really is; we want to use the 1080 on the servers)

Increases employee motivation as well

I'm fairly sure I can justify another one, but I think I'd better not put in an expense claim for an SLI bridge - that might be pushing my luck

I was waiting for porn :(

On the plus side, it also gives us a much better platform for adding any more features into that code; the v1 code was beyond salvage, having been cobbled and hacked and tortured and built on some more and stretched beyond design limits...

7:08 PM

@hichris123 I have a mixed feeling on this issue.

@bacon Yeah, I think we all do.

Okay, I think I misread that post.

8:06 PM
I'm tempted to flag that meta post as too broad :|
IMHO, there are actually 3 issues: the registration process itself, restriction to improve post quality, and additional restriction to reduce privilege abuser. Most of the answers talked about post quality while ignoring the others, which IMHO, are more important.

Fun fact: CloudFlare sets DNS SOA records to a 7 day TTL.

@hichris123 so, not going to happen?

@Braiam No, Nick's probably just commenting about the stupidity of that.

@hichris123 how's that stupid?

Because a 7 day TTL means you can't switch CDN providers easily. I guess it helps with performance, but it discourages switching.
We're just going to rename it to an SOL record in the name of accuracy.
In other news:
Current status: reviewing some $.stackexchange.com certificate options offered by the cartels.
So I guess HTTPS support is actually happening.

that'd be nice

@WebAsh Not yet, I’ll be spending some time in the next few weeks to make that happen though. New CDN next week.

New job title: "Developer Apprentice", represented by Ian Allen and accountless Jisoo Shin. Not sure if this is an internship or a junior developer position, or something in between.

they're still hiring for web devs

Interesting that the two developers have no SO rep.
Well, plus a third that doesn't have an account.

I wonder whether SO users are applying

Sonny Kim had some on the previous account, of which 10 came organically and 100 from my bounty.

Don't know what the deal is with two accounts, they should be merged.

Maybe they're testing some auto-merging logic. :P
