Sometimes we can teleport and get somewhere without walking.
These math flags... what even

user315433
A Twitter bot that posts flagged chat messages could be entertaining.

user315433
Though likely to be shut down by Twitter due to content.

I had an idea like that, but instead to post the room and message author and not the content in a separate chatroom on the SE network
I'm still entertaining that Twitter follower scraping bot idea as well... :D

Writing code comments in non-code font: ick. ICK ICK ICK.

12:26 AM
haha
I saw yesterday that my professor writes the entire subject material in one big TeX document and converts it into a PDF

user315433
I use a separate TeX doc for each class period. Tagging them with semester-course combination and storing on Overleaf.

user315433
After a while, substantial time savings.

12:43 AM
I write all my assignments in Markdown, I haven't migrated to TeX yet

user315433
Then I suppose you're not using much math.

I just use Mathjax for the math parts

user315433
Ah, that makes a lot of sense, if you are not too concerned about the layout of printed version.

@Undo Everyone told me the FRQs were really hard. Now I have to take a look at them myself...

That test looks maddening

user315433

Writing code w/o syntax highlighting, autocomplete, a compiler, or the Internet? No thanks.
Sounds like a darn good way to turn tens of thousands of kids off of programming altogether

Okay yeah I got tired of looking at them. After 3 hours of testing in a day... you get a little tired of FRQs. :P

user315433
Would you rather have MCQs?

oh, I shudder to think what AP CS MCQs look like :/

@Meta I did 50 of those today too, thank you very much. :P

user315433
12:59 AM
Hm... how about simply Qs, then?

@Undo be thankful you have a computer; I had to do a programming test once where I wrote the code out on paper

@Quill oh, this is with a pencil
AP test

@Meta Maybe I'll do a roomba pass to take a break. Although that's... not exactly the best break.

user315433
> WRITE YOUR SOLUTION ON THE NEXT PAGE.

user315433
Wonder how they score them, are they actually typed and compiled?

1:03 AM
;p but it's a PDF, you can just use a text editor...
I love how all the standardised tests I've ever done claim to have "a magical OCR system that screws up if you use a different type of pencil"

@Meta I suspect it's a bunch of semicolon-counters

@Meta Here's the scoring guidelines for 2015: secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/ap/…

user315433
Unrelated. In Chrome, when I do right-click and "open image in a new tab" on Gabe's photo here, I get "ÿØÿàJFIFÿþ;CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v80), quality = 90 ÿÛC". and some such things. Not what I mean by opening an image.

I wonder whether the test makers version of OCR is actually cheap labour in a third world country

@Meta Wow, there are a lot of Careers salespeople

user202362
Oo, got to pick up a parcel from the post office

user202362
looks like my mini drone has arrived

user315433
After today's additions, there are 264 faces on that page, the all-time high (as long as I keep tracking it).

user315433
1:11 AM
So, what causes JPEGs to spill out their content on the page (same in FF as in Chrome), wrong MIME type or something like that? It's not with all of them: Nicolas, Juan, and JNat show normally.

@Undo they are the people who directly make money

user202362
@Undo err, that's how SE makes money?

user315433
Of course. The centri\w* force is way too high for gravity, for any visible mass/velocity combination. (Until we get to astronomical sizes)

what's the force for the acceleration?

@bjb568 so you never have to use this in the exam?

They rubbed the needle with a plastic bag to charge it.

user202362

@Telkitty Yeah, people use that.
Some people even bring on pencils and rubber bands to construct their own coordinate axes.

user202362
@JamesENL doesn't explain why does it go around the needle and bounce at both ends

A: How does Stack Overflow do pagination?

HaneyWell, the whole process is pretty complicated, but I'll try and answer you without writing a post that's as many pages (see what I did there?) as the last Game of Thrones book. Assumptions For the sake of discussion, we'll all agree that pagination is basically a function of pageNumber * pageSi...

How is Runescape still a thing?

8:54 AM
@JamesENL nowadays, online "mmorpg" are more about reaching a critical user mass and then going inertia from there than coming out with something new every year. Notice that I am not advocating against runescape quality, I am just stating it reached the "self sustaining fanbase" point like WoW and other objectively old mmorpgs, and that is creating a lock-in for people to switch to newer games.

> The game has had over 200 million accounts created and is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest free MMORPG and the most-updated game

Q: When not logged in, clicking Run Query navigates to the raw text result rather than showing the result on the same page

Peter O.Lately, clicking Run Query on any Data Explorer query (where the result wasn't generated beforehand) navigates to URLs like data.stackexchange.com/query/run/1/*/*, usually with the JSON query result, rather than showing a reCaptcha challenge (as it usually would). This issue occurs only when I am...

Do the users' icons become transparent when they're not in the tab or when they are for a specific time outside it?

... I feel awkward being here now @Telkitty ...

@PichiWuana it becomes transparent when they are idle, meaning still in the room (i.e. didn't close the browser tab) but haven't posted anything in a while. (10-15 minutes, I think)

would that message be flagged and removed and @Telkitty be banned, if I star that message?

@DroidDev maybe, go ahead! ;)

12:11 PM
@Telkitty is used to chat bans. I'm sure she wouldn't mind. :p

so she would be banned.

@DroidDev actually, we could flag it even without the star....

Nah

@Bart see ^

@ShadowWizard I understand. So they can become transparent even when they're inside the tab?

12:12 PM
I'll just copy the link in another room and star it there. lol. Win win for everyone

There is also another option - one of the room owner could spontaneously send it to the trash bin. Or we could ask Shog to do this... but I fear the sleeping one wouldn't awake just to burinate a message....

@Telkitty If you did, probably I would have flagged the offense, wouldn't I? I just pointed out that you shouldn't expect others to agree with the "fun outweighs people offended" thing. As Shadow also stated, it is never fine if you offend someone. There is no cost/benefit involved. The whole "your liberty ends where someone else liberty starts" is just about this - one is free to act until it hurts someone else in the process.

12:48 PM

Initial public offering (IPO) or stock market launch is a type of public offering in which shares of a company usually are sold to institutional investors that in turn, sell to the general public, on a securities exchange, for the first time. Through this process, a privately held company transforms into a public company. Initial public offerings are mostly used by companies to raise the expansion of capital, possibly to monetize the investments of early private investors, and to become publicly traded enterprises. A company selling shares is never required to repay the capital to its publi...

A: Opt in "mentor" privilege at 7.5k

Jon EricsonI'd like to float a modified version of this idea as a 30k (10k beta) privilege. Problem statement Stack Exchange sites (and especially Stack Overflow) intimidate new users who might become exceptional contributors if only they got over the hump of asking and answering questions. Meanwhile, top...

Ah. I do remember that.

@Telkitty you mean those "sticks"?
It's because you say totally wrong things.
Who said SE will go public? Maybe they will, maybe they won't.
NAA 20k'ers on MSE plz delete meta.stackexchange.com/a/279050/152859

IPO is a event where you give out part of your company shares in exchange of billion dollars that you would never have to repay back (even though you most likely have to part with some of company's future earnings in the form of dividend). It is one way and most common way for venture capitalist, and other original shareholders to make a very handsome sum through the process of initial offering to the public. It's also a great way to be rid of existing debt.

And oh, expansion almost always requires capital, so if you want the company to become gigantic ...

Turns out to be a common spammer: meta.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/44328
@Shog can you nuke this account? Those are likely to return and spam again.

Once some finance person I know of called IPO a scheme to quickly rope in money, but if we look at Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg & Sergey Brin, it's probably true.

huh, what an attack. Reminds me of the Indian hacker boy attacking Tim (and others)
@Telkitty so you say this whole IPO is scam?

user202362
It's how capitalism runs, so by current definition: no

@Telkitty so you say capitalism is bad?

user202362
@ShadowWizard Is an eagle bad for killing other birds to feed it's youngs? It's just how it works. I am afraid a lot of the times, it's not just black and white

@SmokeDetector Flagged all of 'em.
Killed one.
Still a few left.

yay! Spammer account on MSE nuked.

MSE rep-to-post is back at 2

roughly 25% of accounts sent that inbox message have read it, 75% of those active in the last 30 days have read it...
...but that still leaves tends of thousands of accounts per day reading it.
I guess enough of them get confused.
@ShadowWizard ^^^

Imagine picking up your mail in the morning, and as you open the envelope, you're suddenly teleported to another planet. Yes, must be confusing.

Different Country at best

@Meta sounds like it's something that would happen if you drank too much the previous night ... and did some drugs while at it. Not that I have any experience in the field.

Oh, I was just late by 1 hour

@Shog9 thanks! (and also thanks for nuking that MSE spammer :))

Did we get anything worthwhile from 1 rep users during this day when they were able to post on MSE?

For young birds, getting stressed out can be a good thing ... but for young humans, childhood disturbance is a bad thing?

Q: First time user getting "This looks like spam" when trying to post

dksobaI tried posting my question here (which I thought was the correct place to post false positives for spam) but it tells me that it looks like spam here too. EDIT After posting the above simple post, I was able to post my entire post below. Should this be how I post my original question? I trie...

That is all.

Need more Town Hall on Castle Age~

user315433
Which was a duplicate.

2:52 PM
@Shog9 but it's a dupe, like all (most?) others... 1, 2, 3 and probably tons more. Somehow most are for the android app.

Which doesn't exactly strengthen the call to allow more 1-rep user posts

user315433
Does posting a pro-forma question and then editing in the actual content circumvent that restriction?

user315433
Because if yes, that could be mention for the benefit of other users in that situation.

@Shog9 exactly. So you will consider leaving the MSE rep-to-post at 2 for good?

user315433
Long-term this is problematic because it essentially says you can't report a bug or ask for support until you get 200 rep on one of the sites.

2:54 PM
@Meta this can be fixed by allowing 1 rep users to answer on MSE.
One fair answer, and you're free to ask.

user315433
Wouldn't work. If you try to do X on a site, and can't, and don't really know how the sites work, looking for a question to answer isn't a natural thing to do. And posting a good answer is even less likely.

Moreover, it's MSE, where common users won't be able to answers easily.

user315433
