hrm. I am suspicious that someone has just posted a blatantly illegal image in this question
I edited the image out but it's still in history and stored on imgur... am I worrying over nothing?

Flag it with a moderator ping and let the mods deal with it
good work on the edit

already flagged as "abusive" as soon as I saw the photo, before I realized how bad it was.

don't worry about it being hosted on imgur, imgur doesn't assume responsibility for the images hosted on its service

both site mods appear to be asleep at the moment :)
k.

it may be delete voted by site users if you can get enough of them

unfortunately M&TV chat isn't particularly active.
but as long as its not going to get anyone on SE in trouble I'll just wait for the mods to get it

Most countries have a law protecting the provider of the service, the uploader is usually the one who gets in trouble

i know that's true in the case of e.g. copyright violations and things; this was something I'd never seen before on SE.
people tend to get a bit overzealous about those kinds of images.

[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: Can I get a new SIM card for iPhone I found? by user177118 on apple.stackexchange.com

user315433
2:13 AM
Speaking of Ask Different, a random factoid: the most-viewed question on the site is closed as a duplicate: How can I block specific telephone numbers on my iPhone 4?

user315433
It was closed since 2013, but despite this, the target post has about 1% of the views of the duplicate. Not so canonical, it seems.

@404 Did you perhaps mean to post in CHQ?

user315433
I could have, but thought this is a bit chatty for CHQ. And the post from apple is here too...

@404 The dup target doesn't have "phone number" in it (except in the "linked question" sidebar), so naturally "block phone number iphone" won't land on it.

user315433
But this also indicates that most of those who land on the duplicate do not click through to the target. Raising the question of how useful the closure is.

user315433
2:18 AM
For a matching factoid, I looked up the most-viewed question on Android Enthusiasts. It is not closed, but the first line is "Please don't close this question. I've read all the duplicates but it didn't help." :/ How to use PC's internet on android phone through USB cable

user315433
@hichris123 But this one makes sense. Hiding potentially valuable answers from most of the internet wouldn't really help.

@404 Wouldn't a merge make sense then?
It doesn't help either to separate the good answers.

user315433
The vast majority of duplicates are never merged.

well yeah.
But I assume most duplicates don't have an answer.

user315433
3:36 AM
E.g., on Math two questions may be duplicates, but with different notation: maybe one is about y = sin(x^2) while the other is w = sin(v^2). (It's more complicated in practice). merging the answers would created a poorly readable mess.

That's true.

user315433
On SO: 58,512 duplicates with no answers, 165,668 duplicates with 1+ answers.

How about more recently?
I'm curious with the intro of the dupehammer.

@404 The sum of those two numbers seems too small, given that duplicates don't get roomba'd(?).

user315433
They do if they stay unanswered and someone downvotes. (Or, 365 days later, even without downvotes)

user315433
3:40 AM
Duplicate mark does not cause roomba directly, but the usual rules for unanswered questions apply.

Right, it's just the "abandoned closed" 9-day pruner that skips duplicates. That makes sense. (I'll downvote more, I guess.)

user315433

@ShadowWizard That's just what they said about raising the drinking age to 21, you realize.

12:51 PM
@tchrist and it really helped? In the long term?

Well, if you have a medical necessity, you can still smoke at 18.

If you want, you can chew gum in singapore

Poor @IͶΔ is forever banned from drinking. :/

I recommend a drinking age of 16 and a driving age of 21, not the other way around.

12:54 PM
@IͶΔ well, good for you. :D

user202362
medical necessity ... reminds me that it's a medical necessity for alcoholics to drink alcohol

The legal drinking age is the age at which a person can consume or purchase alcoholic beverages. These laws cover a wide range of issues and behaviors, addressing when and where alcohol can be consumed. The minimum age alcohol can be legally consumed can be different from the age when it can be purchased in some countries. These laws vary among different countries and many laws have exemptions or special circumstances. Most laws apply only to drinking alcohol in public places, with alcohol consumption in the home being mostly unregulated (an exception being the UK, which has a minimum legal age...
Some interesting things in there, lol
The part about Israel is wrong, though.
Minor under 18 is allowed to drink alcohol only with parent supervision.
If a minor is caught drinking alone, or with friends, there are punishments.

lol
Oh yeah
I saw pictures of Israel tanks just now

@UnikittyBlendsPeople if only they would have measured the other tanks that I fill in the Den.... :D :D
@IͶΔ cool, you have this?

Pretty sure old Byzantium sells plenty of booze.

@tchrist same for Rome...
Ancient Rome played a pivotal role in the history of wine. The earliest influences on the viticulture of the Italian peninsula can be traced to ancient Greeks and the Etruscans. The rise of the Roman Empire saw both technological advances in and burgeoning awareness of winemaking, which spread to all parts of the empire. Rome's influence has had a profound effect on the histories of today's major winemaking regions in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The Roman belief that wine was a daily necessity made the drink "democratic" and ubiquitous: wine was available to slaves, peasants, women...
Huh? Animated gif??

Byzantium still sells plenty of wine.

@ProgramFOX yeah, shrug bugs off Smokey.... :D

There could be so many reasons: a restart when it got posted, a missed websocket, just passing through our filters...
I have something better to do than analyzing every piece of spam that Smokey doesn't catch.

@ProgramFOX Chess?

@ProgramFOX true, but it might mean many spam posts are missed. :/

1:28 PM
@IͶΔ That too, but right now I'm selecting components for the desktop that I intend to build next week.

@tchrist well, I guess those who aren't religious will find ways to drink even with laws and everything.

^^^^ When life gives you spam, make sushi.
@ShadowWizard No, there are those who feel that it is not against the Quran.
But drinking and drunking differ.

@ShadowWizard Well, you can always ping me if there is a new domain to be added. But screaming for help just because "it didn't catch a port" isn't helpful because it could have many reasons.

@tchrist of course, each can translate the old texts in a very different way, in any religion.

1:30 PM
@tchrist Wow. Never seen so much misunderstanding something.

@ProgramFOX OK, hint taken. Won't ping you anymore for Smokey possible bugs.

@IͶΔ I could probably help you with that. :)

Islam prohibited alcohol explicitly, but it doesn't mean people that call themselves "Muslim" don't drink alcohol.
Most of stuff in that article is excuses.
For drinking.

Mohammed didn't drink?

He didn't.

1:33 PM
@ShadowWizard I'm not saying that you shouldn't ping me for Smokey bugs anymore. What I'm saying is that not reporting a post isn't a reason to panic. A missed websocket is an impossible thing to debug because it's not going to happen again in a short timespan. The only thing I can do in a case like this, is adding a new domain.
Which I'm going to do for that latest spam post.

Not sure if that is possible but then we know that.
@TimPost I don't mean to add more anger and frustration and I really appreciate how you take action when you notice PII is leaked into a log table but I don't hear you address the possible gravatar route at a larger scale. > Some turnover may be necessary to allow new members to join.
Online communities are not technically limited to a finite size, but people tend not to join once the membership or communication levels are perceived to be too high. Groups that are isolated from outside perspectives can develop biases and insular thinking that leave them susceptible to overconfidence about the group’s ability to collaborate effectively. Thus, some turnover might be necessary to create an influx of unique contributors with new ideas, skills, and information.
