A: Will re-populating a password field in a form be a security issue?

ircmaxellOne option if you want to do this, is not actually send the password plain-text, but a random token. Since it's a password field, the user won't be able to tell (except for the length). Then, store the hashed password and token in the session. When the user submits the form, if the password fi...

A: Porting from Cobol to Java

Didier DURANDI was the project leader for the project NACA mentionned above (automatic transcoding from cobol to java for 4 millions lines of Cobol). If you have any specific question, please feel free to get in touch with me via a comment at the bottom of my article mentionned above. We've had lots of pro...

You have ~3 hours to deny the +500 from Can Berk Güder

@badp Who, me?

@YiJiang Do you look like Can Berk Güder?

4:15 PM
honestly, I can't tell @Kev

@badp Well, you're not telling Mr. Can to deny 500 reps from Mr Can, are you?

No, but I'm telling people that if a more captivating ad doesn't show up the reps are going his way :)

I'll give it a go, though no promises

(the most recent ad that gets me to click through gets the reps)

I was expecting someone to grab the domain unicornify.com sooner or later, but couldn't it have been something, I don't know, unicorny? A stupid facebook chat thingadongdong?

4:17 PM
@balpha so where did your service move to? :|

Huh? It never moved

oh, right

4:33 PM
Oh the joy of universally changing domain names for all our clients!
>:o
This was not as easy as I expected it to be
But, is anything ever? :-)

nope

Now taking bets! How many times will I have to reinstall my new jabber server before it will finally accept my password?
I'm on attempt #3 now...

If it's like rsync, 5

LOL

Which deamon?
ejabberd?
Spark?

4:44 PM
Openfire
Now on attempt #4...
I must be doin it wrong

Oh god
I've used that before, it's stupid. You make a mistake when configuring, it's easier to reinstall than try to fix it

yeah
I like the service once it's working
but it can be a bitch to get working

Why openfire? Why not ejabberd? (What do you need for it to do)?

OK something is clearly wrong here
I could never figure out how to configure ejabberd :-(

Q: Openfire Installation Issue - Can't Login to admin panel

Sadly SerferFault didn't come to the rescue this time :-(

I had the same problem, but can't remember what I did to fix it

4:51 PM
Oh. DUH, I'll just copy my users table from my other server!

lol

...and I found another URL still using our old wildcard cert...
I think I'm going to be here all day!

1 hour later…
6:04 PM
and I wonder why I fail
sigh

you just want the filenames?

yeah
hg diff | grep -- ---
I guess that does the trick

doesn't hg status give you the names of changed files?

I just made an hg pull
so I thought hg status would give me what changed in my head, not in the head I just fetched
I wanted to know what an 'hg up' would've changed, in other words

hg status gives you where the working directory differs from its parent
and a pull doesn't change the parent
same for hg diff, though
is hg diff -r tip what you meant?

6:13 PM
there's hg incoming, but that is a list of changesets, not files
(though that'd be before hg pull anyway)

6:26 PM
Why do I sound sicker than I feel in the beginning of the day and then sound better and feel worse over time?

1 hour later…
7:32 PM
@Moshe You expel the crap that builds up in your lungs overnight during the day, but your body devotes less energy to fixing the underlying problem maybe?

7:53 PM
@ircmaxell Are you talking of the offline message there?
> If you are another web developer that has been paid to change this then make sure you get paid up front.

@moot - Dunno, sounds logical. Feeling right now. It's just a cold, thank G-d. Could be worse.
Anyone here know what Funazushi is?
:D

8:26 PM
@badp, to answer your question from yesterday, Josh's edit makes things clearer

8:36 PM
@Benjol - hi.
We have an UPPERCASE ROOM, a MiXeD CaSe RoOm and a lowercase room. We just need a nutcase room now.
waits for someone to suggest that this is the nutcase room

suggeted edits are on again .. .fyi

@badp: yes

Foo foo; try{foo = new Foo();} catch(NewMoonException e){System.exit(-1);} foo.bar() //ERROR: foo may not have been initialized
why does this make sense? :|
Do I need to surround System.exit(-1) with a try/catch just in case I fail to exit?

/me has no idea
wait, what language?

Java

8:51 PM
it shouldn't, since an exception would bubble out.
Perhaps it's the compiler not realizing that System.exit is a terminating function (or there's a chance it won't exit the scope)
try adding a return after that...

@ircmaxell That worked :)

good

@ircmaxell you're not on twitter I suppose?

/me hasn't used java in years, but that was just a guess based on the may language from that error
I have an account, but I haven't logged on or tweeded in almost 2 years

@ircmaxell Wanted to @-mention you rather than follow, I guess simply mentioning your username will do

9:00 PM

A: Looking for good bonus question to test efficiency (specifically efficiency related to time)

ircmaxellTwo things. First, efficiency is about more than execution time. It also is about memory usage, memory access, file-system/resource access, etc. There are tons of things that go into efficiency. So please be explicit that you're looking for the routine with the shortest run-time. Otherwise...

from the utilitybidder html source:

    You may wonder why this site is offline, if you are reading the source then you are most probably a web developer
    that has been paid to change this.

    I put this here as the company in question broke our contract and left payments outstanding,
    as a last resort I put their site offline, what else could I do.

    Make sure you are paid up front, even if you have a contract, they aint worth shit.

someone's pi**ed

Really? I thought he was happy sunshine :P

@balpha Somebody wants to post on ClientsFromHell
So I shouldn't have waited the last minute to award the bounty
oh well!

yeah
Still, that guy better watch out, depending on the contract, he might be liable even though they didn't pay...

9:13 PM
Since I managed to gain more than 500 reps in this week, which made the bounty entirely pointless in bringing my meta reps down, I might as well renew it :P
but I won't
and let somebody more responsible spend their reps

I thought you awarded it earlier?

I'm 4 upvotes shy of 7 days of rep-cap in a row...

after all if I wanted to lose rep fast I could just recalc for 390 reps.

lol

but that'd be giving up rep lost due to Jeff's delete as status-completed and to users deleting themselves!
I earned that rep! It's mine to waste! :P

9:15 PM
I got my second yearling badge.. yay

I'm still a few months off from my first yearling

NEWBIE!!!! NEWBIE!!!!

lol

@TylerChacha I got Yearling 2 a few months ago.
n00b.

@badp Well I got my Owner of the Tavern badge a week ago. What ya say to that?
n00b...

9:30 PM
Dude, the Devils are becoming the team of old

@TylerChacha I see your Tavern and raise you a Bridge.

I'm still 9 days off 'Fanatic' and 270 days off 'yearling'.
If anyone deserves the n00b title...

9:54 PM
After working in C# since 2007 I finally decided to learn it.

Q: Web Development Law/Ownership of Website

I'm a budding web developer, and I wondered if it was illegal to edit a website for a client to include a link that says 'encourage the owner of this site to pay their web developer' and follows up with a pre-made email encouraging the man to pay me. Here are the conditions: I've completed the...

I don't think it's related as the utility bidder site is in the UK and this question reads like it's from an American

10:27 PM
@ChrisF Heh, @ircmaxell mentioned that site, and I pointed to him that exact question

I AM GOING TO KILL OPENFIRE

@Josh Still at it, I see

Somehow I thought a break would help

> i hope i cant help
LOL!

Let me edit that for you...
better @Nyuszika7H?

@Josh yep :)

Also, -1!
> I disagree that "Hi, my name is $name" is "old", and that 'Hi, my name is '.$name is somehow better! – Josh 0 secs ago

@Josh Yeah, they should totally drop that and use jBoss.

10:48 PM
A nice thing in PHP:
if (condition)
    fn1();
    fn2(args);
else
    fn3(arg1, arg2);
This is valid. But the same thing in JS isn't valid.

@Nyuszika7H this isn't valid PHP

@Josh It works for me… let me check it again.

@badp -1, caught a NeedsMoarJqueryException
@Nyuszika7H the else doesn't throw a syntax error?

@Josh a pointer to a pointer to an exception? oh boy
you should totally drop that and use jPanel

@badp FTFY
But, for bonus points, do you know what you call a pointer to a pointer?

10:51 PM
a nightmare waiting to happen?
a memory leak?

@Josh Actually, my code above won't work, but this will:

@badp a handle

if (condition)
    fn1();
else
    fn2(args);
    fn3(arg1, arg2);

Mac OS 9 used them all the time
@Nyuszika7H This is a logic error, fn3 will always be executed!

@Josh ENOENT

10:53 PM
@Josh Oh, I was afraid of that. Never mind, keep that stupid syntax for HAML and SASS.

@badp In Mac OS 9, you could get heap space in the form of a double pointer, called a handle. This allowed the OS to move your data without informing you
Because the OS would update the pointer

@Josh what? oy!

@Nyuszika7H When in doubt use braces!

Actually, I'd prefer HTML and SCSS. But how do I include SCSS on my site? PHP? MySQL?

@Nyuszika7H PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ELSE

10:54 PM
@Josh I know. :)
@DanGrossman Yes, I got that too.

@badp Yeah. It was an elegant hack :-)

@Nyuszika7H I don't think your second example works as you expect either
@Nyuszika7H The fn3() call happens regardless of the condition, it's not part of the else block

@DanGrossman I know, Josh said that before.

@Josh Nah, it totally makes sense
It can't have been as elegant to use though? :)

2 mins ago, by Josh
@Nyuszika7H This is a logic error, fn3 will always be executed!

10:55 PM
@DanGrossman You're just late to the party ;-)

apparently
I just woke up

@badp nah it was pretty easy, just double dereference and you never need to worry about where in memory the data is

it was one of the few parts of Mac OS 9 development that was easy, LOL

@Josh wait, do I need to worry about my memory with malloc? :)
that's why!

10:56 PM
@badp In OS 9 you created heap fragmentation with malloc, it was a sad time.
Many unicorns cried when you used malloc()

@Josh Right, those pesky Unix legacy, they don't even look good on the ad material!
[Unicorn Allocate], now we're talking!
(or was the syntax the other way round?)

status-11-59PM-CET
Good night!

@badp This is awesome.
I am going to make the official way to get memory in my software called uallocate(), and the documentation will clearly state this stands for Unicorn Allocate.
It will throw an Insufficient Horns Exception when the app is out of memory

@Josh [I pleased]
Honestly, I never understood why Objective C needed two so different syntaxes
good ole trite C syntax and, um, er, square sentencey stuff

Agreed
Oh, Openfire, why do you hate me?
Oh, wait, this time it was xinetd's fault

11:10 PM

@DanGrossman she forgot the /

Does anyone have an XMPP account and if so, would you be willing to help me test my new jabber server?

LOL

@DanGrossman they look like they're kindle only :|
cancels download
I love how Gnome decides to open Wireshark every time it doesn't know what to do with a file

@DanGrossman If I install an Android emulator, yes.

Android emulator? It's a Windows app, WINE?

eh, I doubt it'll work.
still having those questions as an offline reference is probably worth the effort
no, archive manager, not you

A: Reason for those thousand sites

Jeff Atwood Don't get me wrong, I actually find SO fantastic, I'm quite new here, but I see the unbelievable speed and quality of answers, the really nice editing and formatting, everything is much better than I've seen anywhere else. Did it ever occur to you that the thing you enjoy most about the site...

@Pekka?

Cranky Jeff... but this one is really spot on

Here?

@Moshe yes?
Sure, I'm not gone yet am I?
I'm still occasionally screaming in the caps room

Wasn't expecting ya back after last weeks conversation.
Ah. Heh. Haha.

11:50 PM
@Pekka agrred!
@Pekka I had a giant meal of Rouladen and Schnitzel in your honor last night :-D

@Moshe ah! No, I'm still wrapping up unaccepted questions in my SO account and letting a few bounties run... It's going to be a few more days

Anyone here have an iOS device that is willing and able to test an app? It is a game, if that helps.

@DanGrossman File → Open Book is conveniently grayed out

Good to hear @Pekka.

11:51 PM
(Well that and to celebrate landing a new client)

@Moshe I am still open to having people send me iOS devices.
2

@Josh heh! Well I'm honoured. Although I'm almost completely vegetarian, and it's a rare occasion when I really eat german food :)

@moot. Good. So when someone does that, give me a holler.

You live in Germany and don't eat German food? Blasphemy!
;-)

@Josh It runs in the family. My Dad learned cooking in China
And was the second person in Germany to ever produce Tofu

11:53 PM
@Josh - you live in the US and you eat Chinese food? blasphemy! :P

@Moshe No one is willing. To combine me with an iOS device. The end result will be too powerful.

@Moshe I eat everything :-D
@Pekka LOL!

@Josh congratulations!

@moot oh well. I guess I'll have to work on @MichealPetrotta then.

@Pekka Thanks. Plus, the partnership opportunity is still developing, I am hopeful!

11:55 PM
man that was some good dinner...

@Josh Very nice!

@Josh - that explains why your software ain't working, doesn't it? You ate some of teh codez.

Zombies will tremble at the thought of my plants.

Going to be a good year for my business I think. I am optimistic!

Friends will tremble at the thought of my words.

11:55 PM
Erm, @moot.

Hmm?

@Moshe The code is tasty. It's made of jQuery!

@Josh yuuuck! thorny.

Do you know folks with iOS devices? Spread the word! A dope wars throwback is about to hit the AppStore!

C# is fresh and firm to the bite
C tastes like cactus

11:57 PM
I know friends with iOS devices who enjoy dope wars throwbacks even.

@Pekka marinade in a little PHP and it's quite yummy :-)

I second @Pekka, those '$' are bad for ones stomach.

Although I'll need more than mere hype to go on.

@Josh yeah, PHP goes down well and is tasty!
Objective C tastes funny.

@Moshe: Make it for android, and you'll get some love from me...

11:58 PM
Python has great taste and is less filling.

@moot it's black and white like the original and supports game center and possibly iPad, should I decide to make the UI for the initial release. @irc - depends if I get an android device to taste on.

@mootinator true. It was always the one language I considered switching to one day
Python lacks the "({()})" that make a Java/C/PHP diet so difficult to digest

@Moshe: shouldn't be difficult. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay...

VB lacks ; though.

@Moshe yeah

11:59 PM
@irc, yea but the screen sizes vary. Oy!

@Moshe Yay.
