Yes, there is risk, as you pointed out yourself: "If you're lucky, the person asking comes back and asks a better question; usually, you get either no response, or overt hostility." More importantly, testosterone isn't just a male hormone, it's attributed to risk-taking, domination, anger and all those generally alpha male traits. And again, you and I may feel that answering and editing is more rewarding, but a lot of people do get a kick out of attacking things blindly. It's the same reason people love watching people screaming on TV debates. — Rei Miyasaka Dec 30 '12 at 1:23

The ovaries produce both testosterone and estrogen. Relatively small quantities of testosterone are released into your bloodstream by the ovaries and adrenal glands. In addition to being produced by the ovaries, estrogen is also produced by the body's fat tissue.

Hey everyone!

Hullo @Julian!
Guys BTW, I have an idea of a radical meta post.
A meta post titled "What to assume and what not to assume in a meta discussion". Go figure.
Hullo @hichris
So what do you guys think?
How many downvotes will I accumulate per minute? :P

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. What am I supposed to be thinking about?

1 min ago, by Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.
A meta post titled "What to assume and what not to assume in a meta discussion". Go figure.
IOW, it's gonna be something like a "common misconception about site meta stuff".
The answer would contain stuff like "close votes are not blocking the questions; any closed question can be reopened if revised to fit the scope of the site".

I'm not sure that'd really help...

So should I write something like it @hichris?
@hichris123 Why not?

3:56 PM
maybe?
maybe not?
I'm not too coherent yet.

The problem is that people that do want to know about meta stuff don't find anything to read first.
The FAQ is for 1-100 rep users, not people that have learned the ropes and want to help discuss the policies of their favorite site.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. People who are ranting about stuff usually don't like someone saying "look here! Click on this link, and scroll down, and maybe you'll find something! Good luck!"

@hichris123 My main aim is not ranters.

Then you cut out like 90% of your market.
Okay, maybe 80%.

60% percent of the posts that get downvoted a lot are from people that don't care about site rules. 30% are from people that make mistakes trying to learn how and why the sites functions.
10% are PSA's. :P

I mean, I guess you could... but I'm not sure too many people would view it.
And if they're "controversial"...

Quick, I need a link to a post thingy that tells me "SO is meant to be a library of detailed blah blah blah and helping you is a side-effect".

why?

A meta.ELL post I'm working on.
The people there are a bit anti-moderation and always get the wrong ideas about what the SE model really is.

4:34 PM
aren't individual sites allowed to have their own liberal interpretation of the SE model? I get into this argument all the time.

@MikeEdenfield Yes, but the interpretation shouldn't harm the overall site's quality.

I mean, we have a site that does code reviews and a site for puzzles.
that is true.

I'm actually discussing about something similar @Mike in here:
in Language Overflow on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 15 mins ago, by Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.
Disappointed about the quality of the answers on ELL? Yes.
@Mike if you're interested, you can read up the discussion here too and see what I'm talking about:
in Language Overflow on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Jan 11 at 9:09, by snailboat
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I want to see ELL succeed, but a lot of the time it's just a place to spread errors and misinformation. I think it can still be a valuable resource some of the time, and I don't expect any resource to be perfect – we all make errors, we're all always learning – but it really does get frustrating.
Basically, I wanna build that site's quality from scratch.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Not all SE employees even subscribe to that view. This is a problem.

@bjb568 ?

Well, when I'm saying "we're mainly building a library" I don't mean "we shouldn't help the OP".

9
A: What is Stack Overflow’s goal?

David FullertonI think you basically hit it on the head. The goal is helping people get answers to their programming questions, and the main way we do that is through building a library of Q&A. I went back and forth on this a lot, but at the end of the day, the library can't be the goal itself. If all you care...

Morning @Shog

6:04 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. re your post meta.ELL, I think the term you want is "teach to fish"?
55
A: Is there any benefit to allowing code-only answers while blocking code-only questions?

casperOneCode-only answers fall under "Very Low Quality" for me and are candidates for deletion*. This extends from my belief that "self-documenting code" is a myth. Code can only tell you the how, it doesn't tell you the why. That's what you need comments for. On Stack Exchange, the how is important, ...

But we're not only helping the OP, so my point still stands.
@Shog9 Making a library is the goal of helping the OP, sure.
@AndrewT. Nah, too much of a stretch.
Guys, if I attracted you interest, read some 30 or more chat messages starting from here and then this meta post:
3
Q: How useful are "Here, say this instead" answers, when the OP isn't asking for them?

Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.Imagine three scenarios in Q/A: Q1: How can I say that "foo bars the baz"? A1: Just say "the foo bars" instead. Q2: Is "foo bars the baz" grammatically correct? A2: Just say "the foo bars" instead. Q3: What is the difference between "foo bars the baz" and "the baz is barred"...

> On StackExchange, you're not here to help the OP. You are hear to make a library of detailed answers to good questions. Helping the OP is but a side-effect.
no, that's backwards
and... kinda just wrong
no one wants a library of good questions

So that's the problem you have to fix: remove all incentives for *answers* to bad questions. If a question is bad, an answerer should get *no reputation* from it. Then the only incentive for answering is the one to help someone out, and as an answerer I know that I'd rather help someone who shows some investment in the question. Then as a questioner, if I see all these other questions getting answers but mine doesn't, I hav
@Shog9 This is a huge problem ^
SE doesn't do enough of disincentivizing answering bad questions.

@bjb568 prove it

dammit, now I have to use SQL.

I mean, I have tried. Turns out, there's already a huge advantage to writing a good question, assuming your goal is to get an answer.

A relative advantage, sure, but you're still getting rewarded thru answers to your bad question.

the problem is, "good question" doesn't mean what you probably think it means

6:37 PM
Ok, how'd you define it?

I didn't. I started looking at what affected your chances - as an asker - of getting an answer.

… so what's a good question if it isn't what I think it is?

@bjb568 short, to the point, with just enough detail to describe a specific problem.

That sounds good.

6:47 PM
Here's a Trello board, vote for what Stack Overflow topic you want to see a post on: https://trello.com/b/0zgQjktX/blog-post-queue-for-stack-overflow-topics Also, suggest more topics here.
Also...
@metromoxie finishing TLS on all of our sites (mainly Stack Overflow), we have some back burner content that needs moving.
HTTPS in the next 6-8 weeks!

DevDoodle's had that for ages…
@hichris123 eww, that overrides scroll behavior

How many ages?

tree fiddy

@bjb568 huh?

@hichris123 scrolling containers on trello

6:52 PM
Yeah, so?

It's horrible.

Apparently I don't have a finely tuned palate.
@bjb568 If you knew what people put in production bjb... this would be the least of your worries.

So here's the real problem: for new users, folks who don't know how to write a good question yet, asking is less productive. But it still produces results enough of the time to make it worthwhile. especially if you don't invest much work into it.

SELECT Count(Id), ParentId As taid FROM Posts pq WHERE PostTypeId=2
  AND DeletionDate IS NOT NULL AND ClosedDate IS NOT NULL AND SCORE > AnswerCount + CommentCount / 2 AND
  (SELECT Id FROM Posts WHERE PostTypeId=1 AND ParentId=pq.taid) IS NOT NULL
> Invalid column name 'taid'.
How do you make aliases work?

IOW, when you don't know how to ask well, doing it poorly is more efficient because you don't get as much return on your investment anyway.
@bjb568 not like that

6:55 PM
@Shog9 For one thing, I asked bad questions until I learned to ask good ones.

@Shog9 oh, thanks.

O_o wait a sec; did I learn to ask good ones?

@Shog9 So then what do you do? Yelling at the people asking poor questions to go away is fruitless; making people ask good questions isn't easy either.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. no, see example above ^^

@bjb568 I'm pretty sure aliases only affect the output, in a nested query you have to use real column names/expressions

6:57 PM
@MikeEdenfield Column 'Posts.ParentId' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

You're bad at SQL...

yes

looks like you just want a join.

Just group by Posts.ParentId.

NoSQL!

6:58 PM
@MikeEdenfield oh yeah, why isn't he using a join there?

perhaps I should read your whole query, 1 sec...

@hichris123 1) Maintain a standard quality of questions by deleting stuff, 2) remove the backlog of broken window, 3) Empower caretakers of the site, 4) Establish a guiding ideology of the site — crush the "I'm here to help people" mentality, 5) Disincentivize behaviors that you can identify as bad (like answering questions that get closed), 6) Incentivize care taking (eg, rep for closing as dup)

I was asking Shog...

oh sry, im not wrthy

@bjb568 thanks for telling, I didn't realize it's scrollable

6:59 PM
@bjb568 I do not agree with any of them.

Well, CMs deal with this kind of stuff on a day-to-day basis. Us on the outside... we're peering through one window of a house.

`SELECT COUNT(Id), ParentId AS [taid]
FROM Posts pq
INNER JOIN Posts p ON p.ParentId = pq.ParentId AND p.PostTypeId = 1
WHERE pd.PostTypeID = 2 AND pq.DeletionDate IS NOT NULL AND pq.ClosedDate IS NOT NULL AND pq.Score > pq.AnswerCount + pq.CommentCount / 2`

^ try indenting with 4-spaces
(apparently I won the sticky...)

@MikeEdenfield Just click "fixed font"

7:02 PM
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Well, you'll love DevDoodle where we will 1) Delete questions instead of close them, 2) Start without a huge pile of bad questions, 3) Disproportionately hand out privileges to moderating rather than creating content that could be problematic, 4) Be extremely explicit on what is valid and invalid use of the site, 5) Prohibit and severely punish behavior that goes against the ideology of the site, and 6) Incentivize caretaking efforts over content creation to the necessary extent.

No. :-(

also, there's a typo in the last line.

I don't understand joining :(
Yay mongo!

@bjb568 Yay DevDoodle. Hooray.

DevDoodle for the president!

7:03 PM
Get to 1/1000'th the size of SO, and the internet will be filled with "DevDoodle suckz"

President of what? Lifehacks?

@hichris123 well, that's the big question, isn't it?

@bjb568 the inner join is pretty much identical to your subselect. "link up these two sets of rows based on having some field in common and only return rows where there was a match"

You can't just make asking questions less likely to get answers. That incentivises putting even less work into them.
You also can't just block people.

the only functional difference is, joins give you access to both sets of fields.

7:04 PM
@Shog9 Yes you can. You can make asking be a 150 rep privilege.

I'm pretty confident SQL 2014 will translate both queries into the same query plan.
make people earn rep by answering and spend it by asking!

@bjb568 which will bring us the fine high-quality questions that one used to find on... Experts Exchange?

and if they don't answer enough questions, make them pay $$ to read the answers.

Current strategy is to try & hide lackluster questions and kick in severe rate-limits as early as possible.

@Shog9 Well, are most people 'one and done' with asking poor questions on SO? i.e. they post their question and are never seen again?

7:05 PM
and put more !!! in the middle of the site's name.

@Shog9 Improper capitalization of the last two words.

@hichris123 I feel like I answered that on meta somewhere

Stack! Overflow!

Or should I say three?

@Shog9 I don't know anything about sex changes, but given that low rep users ask worse questions, what's wrong with muting them? Wouldn't that increase question quality?

7:06 PM
@bjb568 because you're confusing cause and effect.
Folks with a bit of rep (doesn't even need to be much) tend to ask better questions
Then again, folks who've previously asked questions also tend to ask better questions
Which leads me to suspect that it's the practice that leads to the skill which leads to the rep

If they work at writing answers that get upvotes, wouldn't they be more likely to write questions that aren't crap? This would also prevent drive-by "I WANT TEH ANZARZ/CODEZ/TUTORIALZ" questions.

I saw a first timer who could ask a good question

@bjb568 I wasn't tossing out that reference to EE casually. Have you ever seen it?

Q: What happens to new users?

Shog9I've been looking at what happens when new users post their first questions on Stack Overflow... Not really done yet, but I figured I'd toss what I have up here in case anyone else has useful suggestions. For window of time between 30 and 90 days ago, I looked at users who posted their first que...

@Shog9 Not really.

7:08 PM
Then again, I saw one who had some reps and wrote many off-topic questions..

@bjb568 Especially back in the day when it was the biggest game in town and folks desperately wanted to be able to ask... Which you could earn by answering.
It prompted some... pretty awful behaviors.

o_0

don't get me wrong, I think answering is a great way to learn how to better structure your questions
but... you have to be doing it because you want to answer, not just going through the motions until the machine lets you ask

@Shog9 In theory, requiring upvotes on the answers too would make it harder to game. Especially since upvoting requires rep in itself (tho I think it should be raised to 125 for questions and answers on not-your-question).

OTOH, I answered the first question on SO and got upvoted and bounty
But I asked the first question on MSE wrongly (closed as dupe of bug report)

7:12 PM
@Shog9 I don't think requiring answering is as much solving the problem of educating the crap-askers as filtering them. We can even almost hand-hold users who want to learn. But trying to hand-hold the average new user now who has no desire to learn is fruitless, counter-productive, and unscalable. We don't need to ensure quality first-questions, we just need to ensure a baseline understanding of the site and of programming, and a minimum requirement of effort.

@bjb568 Wait a minute, so what do you think new users can/should do?

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Read the help center. Answer.

I think I need coffee, or sleep.

You just need one answer that the OP likes to get 26 rep (+1/accept). Now you can vote and flag. Do this twice and you can comment anywhere.

Umm, are we talking about asker or answerer?

7:15 PM
6 answers at this minimum level of +25 and you can now ask. This is assuming my high bar of 150 rep.
@AndrewT. All new users would start out as only answerers.

deploying NAA in 5... 4... 3...

Well, the hope is that new users wouldn't be answering poorly just to try to unlock the asking priv.

@bjb568 Good luck with that.

8:11 PM
> On some Android and iOS devices, it can take as long as 200-300ms just to parse jQuery.

There goes my first meta.SO post.

8:28 PM
@bjb568 thanks, the jQuery tester linked on that article crashed my Chrome for Android

:p

8:52 PM
Well, at least I managed to post a first post that isn't crap.
Almost.

Almost.
