12:00 AM
"HO" "HUT" "SIT", WwF.

@TimStone YW

@TimStone HUH, TITS, obviously.

anybody heard of LoJack?

@RebeccaChernoff Sure

@RebeccaChernoff You know my dog?

12:04 AM
The computer or the car version?

computer. got a friend asking me about it

@TimStone She's an employee now. She knows all

@Josh I'm a little scared now.

@TimStone Yeah, we're good pals.

@RebeccaChernoff I used to know one of the devs on it... I know a little about it myself, but not very much
@TimStone See the message below yours. I'd be scared too ;-)

12:05 AM
@Josh like how to remotely control disposals?
oh no, we're all DOOOOOOOOOOOMED

@RebeccaChernoff star

@drachenstern As I sad above, it was a DOS attack!

My dog is named Lojack, I kid you not. Coincidentally, in completely random relation to that software.

(the irony being, it actually was a DOS attack...)

12:06 AM
lol

/facepalm I can't type from my brain to my fingertips ...

@RebeccaChernoff - Yes, LoJack. My friend likes it.

anyway, good company? good service? worth it? i see there's 2 different price points.

It's funny because Jack is slang for "steal" and "Lo" in hebrew means "No"
No Steal.

@RebeccaChernoff what's the intent? casual recovery or serious recovery?

12:07 AM
heh.

@Moshe it's not funny, that's why it's called that

@RebeccaChernoff my opinion here would be biased as all I know about it comes from one of the developers, LOL

@RebeccaChernoff - No clue, never used it.
@drachenstern - Really? Citation?

@Moshe I do believe so, yes

I never thought of that until now, btw.

12:08 AM
I may stand corrected...
> The name "LoJack" was coined to be the "antithesis of hijack", wherein "hijack" refers to the theft of a vehicle through force.
to me those two were synonymous tho

Nice try though @drachenstern!

Oh, no, not was I was referring to.

@Moshe I see that, I was acknowledging that

Lo, in hebrew is "no"

as in, Ani Lo Yodah

12:08 AM
(pronounced "low")
@Josh - Yep.

@RebeccaChernoff anyways, answer to my query?
1 min ago, by drachenstern
@RebeccaChernoff what's the intent? casual recovery or serious recovery?

@Moshe That's what I said most often in Hebrew class ;-)

Javascript should run through dragging into the browser (file://) no?
Or must I fire up a server to test my Ajax?
@Josh - Heh, unfortunately, we're out of stars.

@Moshe drag and drop the file onto the webpage and have it upload? No, not that I'm aware of through HTML4 implementations
HTML5 implementations may allow that

@Moshe Sorry, dragging into the browser and file:// are contradictions in my mind...

12:10 AM
@drachenstern - No.

I've always heard people say use a java applet or flash for that

ZIMBRA DID THAT!!!

I want to drag a webpage into my browser and have it execute the JS in the page.

I NEED TO KNOW HOW!!!!

Huh?

12:10 AM
@Moshe if it's an HTMl file, it should work

tries to follow the conversation and gives up

It is, didn't work

@Moshe if it loads the page it'll work like that

NEED MORE THREADS

what browser? need to repro

12:11 AM
We should fight the mods for more stars. Then we can call it Star Wars.

@Shog9 nooooooooo IRC

@Moshe Zimbra, the web mail suite, allows you to drag and drop a file on your web browser and it gets uploaded and attached to the web email you're composing.

@Moshe bad idea, I am not in on this

@drachenstern - Safari or chrome

@Moshe pick one

12:11 AM
@Josh - Try Gmail.

@drachenstern Err, I never thought about a difference. Isn't it just recovery?

@Moshe it does that too?
how?

@RebeccaChernoff no. There are options for software or hardware chips. The hardware is serious recovery and costs a bit more, the software is just something that can be uninstalled in safe mode

@Josh - Fairly certain, I think it does though, at least through labs.

YEY! I CAN HAS STARS AGAIN!

12:12 AM
casual recovery is fine if you're thinking the neighbors kid might lift it to play games and surf porn

goes to find Pekka's message...

serious recovery is like if you must get it back

@drachenstern - Chrome on Mac.

Oh. Hrm. I guess I haven't looked into it much. My friend mentioned it did something with bios.

Just pointing out there are different types of recovery software

12:12 AM
@RebeccaChernoff - How would that work for Mac? Mac uses EFI.

Then that product is probably in the "serious" category

@RebeccaChernoff It calls home when it's used

those usually sniff out the network and send home when they can

@Moshe That's what my friend did (the mac version) :-)

@Moshe it's a chip

12:13 AM
Ah.
@Josh Cool.
fires up apache

@Moshe I don't associate with people that use macs. q:
2

@RebeccaChernoff I have flagged this as offens- no, wait, I'd rather not associate with you anyway!

Whoa, my stars have returned!

@RebeccaChernoff just remember that software can be uninstalled. That's all

EVERYONE STOP STARRING THAT!
2

12:15 AM
@Moshe imagine that

!!!!

you people are crazy

ya know it's a daily thing right? and the servers just ticked over to "00:00" about 15 minutes ago

So, if I start saying oy now, I can get y'all to use up stars?
2
Oy.
Oy!
(;

@RebeccaChernoff Oy Noy You Doynt!
3

12:16 AM
@Moshe cute

@RebeccaChernoff I just spit the water I was drinking because I burst out laughing. You owe me a new keyboard ;-)

what's some basic javascript that proves javascript works?

@drachenstern - alert('Is this enough proof?');

I dune typed too slow

good call
loading this file into my browser tab via drag and drop ... I'm on Chrome 8ish so if anyone wants to repro on another browser? <html><head><title>I loaded</title></head><body><script type="javascript">alert('javascript works!');</script></body></html>
Also FX3.6ish

12:18 AM
Right, but how do I check that jQuery is properly set up?

that should've worked, right? it should've run the javascript?
or did I put in a bad block there?

Properly set up?

right, looks like it should
Chrome is ignore my JS too...
Perhaps use text/javascript?

@Moshe $(document).ready( function() { alert('works'); });

if ( window.$ != window.jQuery ) { alert("you heathen!"); }

12:19 AM
@drachenstern a return after the <script> ?

Does not run via Dn'D

@Moshe I horked something, hang on

Ok
Sheesh, so much work for a javascript call, I feel uneducated.

<html><head><title>I loaded</title></head><body><script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">alert('javascript works!');</script></body></html> <-- my script block header was wrong slightly

@Moshe I should have caught that
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE= is deprecated

12:22 AM
I still declare it

@drachenstern it will specifically not validate in HTML 4.01 strict right?

It might not, I don't know for sure on strict

@Josh They only dropped it in HTML5

Ah OK, Thanks @Tim

I would rather overinform the browser than let something slip by and not work

12:23 AM
What's wrong with this?

be selective only in your inputs, right?

oh, missing comma

$(document).ready(function(){
alert(" ");
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "http://192.168.1.1",
data: " nothing here "
success: function(msg){
$('#replyDiv').html('<p>Success' + msg + '</p>');
},
error: function(XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown){
$('#replyDiv').html('<p>Error: ' + errorThrown + '</p>');
}
});

});
so much easier to read in fixed font ya know

@Moshe I was just typing that
@Moshe Do you use an IDE? ;-)

Ah, @Josh - No.

12:24 AM
Chat is not your IDE... :-D

What IDE do you recommend?

Why are you using XHRs manually? You don't need those ...

NetBeans

@Moshe Notepad++ if you're just looking for something ultra basic

@Josh - For Javascript?

12:24 AM
I used gedit for years in college

I'm not on PC @drachenstern

@Moshe Yup. And PHP

Cool

@Moshe ok, then what are you on?

I'll look into it.

12:25 AM
or Coda, but it doesn't syntax check JavaScript

OSX?
blech

@drachenstern - Yes
@drachenstern - Yea, I am.

@drachenstern you're blech!

flags "blech" as offensive (Just kidding.)

12:26 AM
Cool!

I almost had a full list of games won on WwF, but now Jin is going to finish me off :P

damnit, one little UI change and I have to update like 30 scripts and add idk how many lines of code ... I feel dirty atm ... like I've put too much code in for this :(
@TimStone have you beat me yet? (inevitable I realize)

@drachenstern what should I use instead?

There's still tiles left, but uh...you may not be thrilled when you open the game.

Anybody ever done a GiveCamp weekend?

12:28 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I wasn't aware that that existed, that's actually really cool. So no, but I might have to give it a shot if there's anything around this area.

@TimStone Ditto.

@Moshe idk, I forget the syntax for the errors on those, if it's the first thing thrown then there's not much to do but assign it a variable, but using underlying components in a framework makes me also feel dirty

there's a philly one this weekend so sayeth the site
I'm doing the St. Louis one this weekend. Have never done it before.

@TimStone I saw the FORGAVE so I tried to give you a "good play" word :p

This isn't really a serverfault question is it?
ONEBOX DAMNIT!

12:30 AM
@drachenstern Just copied straight from the jQuery site.

Onebox FAIL

Why would my ajax request fail?

@Moshe for like about a jillion reasons

@Moshe a whole host of reasons. Bad URL. Missing net connection. User navigating away from page. Server under load...
bad code...

Well, I'm trying to "ping" my router here.

12:31 AM
@Moshe hey how'd you know where my server was?
2

@drachenstern jQuery tells all.

Welcome new user JJC

Yes. welcome.

Greetings @JJC

waits in anticipation to see if @JJC responds ... with bated breath even

12:35 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Hm, so there is..

I need to stop chatting and doing other things at once

@Josh yes I realized what I had done there ... why'd you remove that, I didn't read it yet

@TimStone Watch out

@RebeccaChernoff I'm not sure if I can on such short notice, hrm. :/

12:36 AM
@TimStone You're giving away your location!

how the hell did I get a "Nice Answer" for that!!! (e.se)
also, thanks for the accept

8
A: What's a better word for "pensive" in this situation?

Jay"Anxious" itself seems better. A state of anxiety often suggests a mind racing with the scenarios of possible outcomes. The phrase, "with bated breath" also comes to mind, as it combines the act of waiting with a feeling of anxiousness, though it does not suggest any sort of planning for conting...

@Josh bah, we've known he was in philly area

@drachenstern You're welcome, thanks for the answer :-)

ahhhh

12:37 AM
@TimStone ):
3

...wait for it...

@drachenstern I owe you one for the webcam issue, I just haven't had a chance to test yet, LOL

I'm still surprised I've got more than 103 on E.SE
@Josh lol, lemme know when you do
I wanna make sure I was right :S
@Moshe I think it's time to give up and move on

@Moshe You're going to scare him off!!!

12:38 AM
@drachenstern Give up on Jimmy or JJC?

I don't see @JJC saying anything to us today ... either that or typing in the big white box and hitting enter is nonintuitive

@Moshe BOTH

BOTH

Hey, maybe they are one and the same.

for the love of all things that are holy ...

12:38 AM
@drachenstern AHAHAHA

@Josh Hah, not really. Now, where the hell is Malvern..

Jimmy Wales is on StackOverflow, we just don't know it yet - ... ... .... and neither does he.

@RebeccaChernoff I wonder how often they'd do them, I really don't do charity stuff as much as I should these days..

@RebeccaChernoff this GiveCamp.org sounds neat!
It's too bad there's none near me
In fact, I'm surprised since this is such a high tech area

The StL one is an annual event I believe.

12:42 AM
Ah, the Philly one just started last summer, in June.

I see y'all didn't learn from running out of stars "yesterday"

I can't get the jQuery working.
@RebeccaChernoff Yester-what?

@Moshe the jquery?!?!?!?
You were going to try and DOS your router using javascript???
3

@Josh - I tried writing a jQuery AJAX request, but it keeps returning an undefined error.
@Josh - Why not?

I think you'll need something a lot more powerful

12:44 AM
I thought you said you don't have physical access to the thing

@drachenstern - I don't

Like, C++ :-)

@Josh but ... but ... but ... it's jQuery
@Moshe is it in a locked room and sealed?

I used a website to find the external IP.

if it's the router between you and the internet, how do you not have access?

12:45 AM
@drachenstern - not accessible physically.

@drachenstern It's OK, it's not heresy because the limitation lies in the browser refusing to open that many connections at once.

is this for a company?

@drachenstern They took my The NeedsMoarJquery Exception name away. In protest I am boycotting jQuery!

@Josh - idea!

12:46 AM
@Moshe write something in C#/Java??? Wow!

opens Xcode
@drachenstern - C# in Xcode?
Try Objective-C.

@TimStone the computer won't open that many outbound at once will it? I seem to recall that being an XP limitation as well

@Moshe Try exploiting a buffer overflow

I'm still confused how someone got access due to lack of software security, but the router is inaccessible due to physical security.

@drachenstern sysctl :-D

12:46 AM
@Moshe like 50% of SO write C# daily :p

@Josh - I'm not going to lie - what is that?

@drachenstern I don't know enough to say.

@TimStone exactly. It's a business, yes? So someone has a key. Unlock the EFFING door and RESET the EFFING router.
it's not THAT hard @Moshe
@TimStone we need an expert
@Zypher HELLOOOOOO
let's see if he answers
or we could see if there were any competent SF users here ...

If not, I'll just put on my expert hat.

I'm out folks.

12:48 AM
@Moshe it's the terminal command for controlling ceratin system settings, especially network settings. Like the max number of open network connections
@Moshe Later, and good luck

@Moshe seriously, go open the door
it's a door

ROFLOL
@drachenstern $('#door').open() ?

I could understand if this was the alternateverse and walternate had his goons after you and the thing was stuck in resin, but seriously ... #Fringe #UnnecessaryHashtags #InappropriateHashtags

@Josh $('#Josh').ROFLOL() ?

@Josh lol

12:49 AM
Damn I went into the SF room to see if anyone had close votes, and the converstion in there is so slow and serious!

bookmarks GiveCamp so he doesn't miss the next one

Oy. Angry Birds, the board game: http://j.mp/hILTC4 (via @NiemanLab @brainpicker)
wait, did something happen with the astrology system recently? I've seen like 15 comments that would lead me to believe so, but the whole system is so entrenched in history that I can't imagine it would've

@Josh - Ya think ASIHTTPRequest is good enough?

@Moshe sorry idk what that is

An HTTP wrapper, for iOS works on Mac too.
