@MichaelMrozek I don't think chat is a good place to discuss this question. :-) If you think it's a bad idea, that's separate from saying "it's a dupe so it shouldn't be discussed at all."
@DanFabulich In the rare case that people feel the need to un-anonymize themselves they'll just use a comment. I really don't think the proposals are sufficiently distinct to be worth it
@MichaelMrozek I find this conversation strange, because I think on the one hand you don't really like the idea -- and that's fine -- but for some reason you also think it has something to do with the other proposal. I think it has nothing to with the other proposal (other than addressing similar problems).

@MichaelMrozek Quora has both mechanisms, and I think it's an idea worth discussing. Closing it as a dupe inappropriately shuts down discussion, IMO. Bad feature requests should be downvoted, not closed as dupes.
I'm not sure that the actual discussion piece is different though, as far as whether or not a "Thank you" button, irrespective of implementation details, is necessary goes.
In SE, an upvote is an upvote. They're worth the same number of points. But it's not just about the points; it's about feeling like I made a real contribution. That's what "thanks" is all about.
@RebeccaChernoff I was referring to Jeff's suggestion that newbies who can't upvote should just "Pay it forward" INSTEAD of expressing gratitude. They can't comment, they can't upvote, so they should just DO something (answer questions, plant a tree, whatever.)

Admittedly I don't see that as being very likely, since both questions talk about the concept of a "Thank You" button, which is really the focus of discussion. Everything else, as far as who gets to use it and how it's implemented is mostly just filler. But, I've been wrong before, so who knows.
Better yet, swap out the voting box for a Herp Derp button (apparently it's also called a Facebook Like button) that people can just click on instead. Bring in that "Tweet this!" popup while you're at it.
