Why are you people so grumpy? I don't understand ...

@Telkitty Don't make me kick you.
@tchrist For my entire life I've thought bombs were "diffused". Vocabulary ++.

@Telkitty Frumpy friends.

Oh hey I have a noob english question.
In "You listen to me", you=subject, listen=verb, me=object, right? What is "to" called?

particle

Preposition.

3:16 AM
word

The problem is that listen to isn't really separable.

So "listen to" is the verb?

> ?You should listen well to your mother.
There are all kinds of models for verbs.
As to what sorts of things they can or must take.
This is excruciatingly difficult for people trying to learn English who are always using the wrong preposition-thingy.

Ok, then my real question is, in "Do you listen to me?", you=subject, listen to=action, me=object, what is "Do"? Is it part of the action?

@JasonC It's a "helper verb" or whatever they're called
Auxiliary?

3:19 AM
Do-support is complex, but yes, it's an auxiliary.

It's excruciatingly difficult, period. Fortunately my brain just constructs English sentences without thinking about it.
Do people still diagram sentences? I remember having to make sentence diagrams in grade school.

Also, me is not the direct object unless you construe the verb to be listen to. It's the object of the preposition to, but there is no real difference between that and the one in hear me; we just have to connect it with to when you use listen.
@JasonC Yes, but for real.

@ev3commander I am 100% sure that that guess does not qualify for Archimedes. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

It sort of screwed me up because if I actually think about a sentence I automatically try to imagine a diagram of it, and since I sucked at that, I just get confused. So I try not to think about sentences.

Just feed it to a parser and have it spit out the parse tree for you.

3:21 AM
@tchrist I think I understand.

In the grammar of English, the term do-support (or do-insertion) refers to the use of the auxiliary verb do, including its inflected forms does and did, to produce negated clauses and questions, as well as other constructions in which subject–auxiliary inversion is required. The verb "do" can be used as an auxiliary even in simple declarative sentences, where it usually serves to add emphasis, as in "I did shut the fridge." However in the negated and inverted clauses referred to above, it is used because the rules of English syntax permit these constructions only when an auxiliary is present. Apart...

Oh god. I'm bookmarking that. If I start reading it now I have a feeling I'll end up in a wikipedia hole.

Q: How does the phrase "used to" work, grammatically?

PopsIt is common to hear people say "used to" to indicate that they did something in the past but no longer do; for example, "I used to play basketball." How would "used to," used in that context, fit into a sentence diagram? What part of speech is it?

3:24 AM

That one leads to perplexing questions about didn’t used to.

I actually asked that question because "used to" is a whole separate can of worms, but the answers there may help you.

3:28 AM
@JasonC You’re welcome to withdraw the question.

Or something.
What are you actually supposed to do with the worms after you open the can, anyways? Nobody ever seems to get that far.

A: Exact meaning of the Gandalf quote, "He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."?

tchristIt means: If you break something to find out what it is, then you have left the path of wisdom. You are misparsing the actual constituents here: “is has” is not part of the same constituent, but rather two separate pieces of two completely separate constituents. That is is actually part of ...

3:38 AM
Lol
What it is has left the building.

So yes, people still diagram sentences, although perhaps not quite as you were made to do.

Oh I think the ones I remember are called "Reed-Kellog diagrams", according to the internet.
I want to get that dependensee one working.

I believe Gandalf is advising you not to open the can of worms to find out what it is.

3:42 AM

I want to know: If once I get privileges for creating chat-room from one site, then I can create new chat-room at any site right?

[ SmokeDetector ] Few unique characters in answer, repeating characters in answer: Android Crop Center of Bitmap by user5700243 on stackoverflow.com

sd gone^^

@Pandya I believe you get the privilege per chat server. There are three: chat.se, chat.mse and chat.so. On at least one of their connected sites you need to have at least 20 rep to chat and 100 rep to create a chatroom
If you have only 100 rep on SO you can't create rooms on chat.mse or chat.se

@rene Let me clarify: If we talk about chat.SE and If one has 100 rep on one site.SE.com (for not another server) then s/he can create chat-room for any site under server chat.SE right?

11:31 AM
Yep, I think that is true. For that case you can create rooms except for MSE and SO

@rene OK
Thanks

yw

Then I think: If one get privileges for creating chat-room on any site under SE server, then earning that privileges on another site (on SE server) by 100 rep. is meaning less!
I think privileges 1)talk in chat 2)create chat rooms & 3)create gallery chat rooms are not site specific!
I agree server specific as @rene informed

So, basically you need to choose an item that you would like to receive
and write a post on why you deserve to have it / what you would do with it
Some of the other users, however,
have been clever and wrote something different
Like this for example
You could do either, just make to list what item you would like

@Quill-HATMANIAC Thank you so much for your time and explanation

No problem :-)

but I did not understand some things there, still
First of all, what are the items to choose from?

some photos were posted here

I saw the list of t shirt, fan badge and stickers

let me just see if I can find them

is that all?
Yes, please
