@Normal any idea why that user was blacklisted?

user202362
@SmokeDetector why

I guess the user vandalized one of their posts.

user202362
I suspect sometimes some users do 4tpu or 8tpu without actually looking at the posts thoroughly ... I have seen similar problem before.

Well, I can't see the question itself, but from the title it looks like a post vandalism.

Rollback war engaged it seems.

@IlmariKaronen Since the Bayesian database has been removed, there is no difference anymore.

Er, ignore meant to ignore a post, so it wouldn't show up again if it was edited, right?

@S.L.Barth Basically fp was ignore + add to Bayesian DB as false positive.

@ProgramFOX OK, that explains my confusion. :)
Out of curiosity, why was the Bayesian database removed? Was it ineffective?

12:34 PM
Yeah, it was an experiment that didn't turn out to be effective.

Might be worth trying again at some point, perhaps. It seems like some kind of a statistical classifier ought to be a useful tool.

Yeah, but then we'll have to do it differently.

On SE, it might actually be more efficient to mostly try to train it to identify legitimate posts on each site, and treat everything that deviates sufficiently from that as potentially suspect.
That could catch the occasional blatantly off-topic post too, in addition to spam, but that might not be such a bad thing.

@IlmariKaronen Smokey's focus is really on spam/abuse though, not off-topic posts.

12:46 PM
....although ALL CAPS titles are a pretty good indicator of a low-quality question....

IIRC they were originally for spam.

Yeah, the all-caps rule is actually a pretty good example of what I was trying to say: as a spam-detecting tool, it's pretty lousy (just look at the metasmoke statistics), but we's still kept it because the posts it flags are usually somehow bad, even if they're not spam. It's a bit of a borderline case, and you could certainly argue that it's creating too many false alarms and should be removed, but so far it doesn't seem to be producing too much noise.

A statistical hypothesis is a hypothesis that is testable on the basis of observing a process that is modeled via a set of random variables. A statistical hypothesis test is a method of statistical inference. Commonly, two statistical data sets are compared, or a data set obtained by sampling is compared against a synthetic data set from an idealized model. A hypothesis is proposed for the statistical relationship between the two data sets, and this is compared as an alternative to an idealized null hypothesis that proposes no relationship between two data sets. The comparison is deemed statistically...

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. HATS ARE AWESOME. Winter Bash will begin in 2 days, 7 hours, 18 minutes and 12 seconds. :D

I've been a regular in a specific room on main SO for ~2 years, and I consider the people in there to be my friends. We often have very off-topic and even controversial/vulgar chats, but I can't recall a single time that this actually caused any problems... for anyone
don't think anyone has ever had trouble with this room.
inb4 one of the mods prove me wrong
though I realise that depending on the people in the room, it could cause trouble. But I would be very sad if that kinda room culture is no longer allowed

@PraxisAshelin what would you do if it ever did cause a problem?

@Shog9 solve the problem at hand

4:43 PM
@PraxisAshelin by...?

well speaking of my specific room, I think just telling them to tone it down would be enough.
but that doesn't always work with more immature people

Ah. So, not by attacking whoever was hurt and throwing a huge pissy fit over stuff getting deleted, then not-so-subtly mocking them for the next 6-8 weeks?

@Shog9 Wow. That sounds like a great plan. You should post that as a solution on that Meta question.

Not my invention, I'm afraid - wouldn't want to steal credit.
@PraxisAshelin Anyway, this sounds reasonable. I wouldn't be too worried.

I honestly don't really know what would be a good solution. You could tell people to take off-topic chat to a different chat like IRC, but that really just sounds... meh.. to me. I like all my stuff in 1 place, and incidentially we already have this place with all the people in there
and I do like the flow of new people in the room as well

4:47 PM
if you have new people flowing into the room (and not leaving quickly in horror/disgust), that's itself a good sign

chat is one of the biggest reasons I am still active on SO
@Shog9 yes, I like to think my regular room is a pretty good one

On sites like ELL and meta itself, some 80% of my activity (at least) is by chatting.

because if there is vulgar chat, it's never meant in an offensive way
there is sometimes banter between the regulars, but all in good fun
