So I read How to execute a JavaScript function when I have its name as a string. But I don't have a window object in Apps Script... eval, then?

user259867
Current version: if (/^\w*$/.test(string)) { eval(string)(); }

user259867
I can't think of something that consists of 0-9A-Za-z_ only and is a malicious JS code.

user259867

and I craved for pineapple ... was it yesterday? ... which is strange because that doesn't happen often

user259867
Those are in the tasty half-plane.

@xkcdBot the problem is that you need a machete not a rock to open a coconut...
in less than a minute you could be enjoying a coconut
@NormalHuman did you see stackoverflow.com/a/18282021/792066?

Any idiot who calls tomatoes untasty should quit effing buying them from a store and grow them himself.

btw, I love most fruits, except pears and watermelons... to watery for me

12:42 AM
Also, throw the Red Delicious to the swine who don't deserve them and keep the Honeycrisps for yourself.

user259867
@Braiam Seems essentially the same as eval.

without eval?
I presumed you said eval is evil

user259867
I didn't say it was evil. I think the way I wrote the conditional is fine.

user259867
The point is, writing new Function(string) and then invoking it is not much different from eval(string). You are still executing whatever the string contains.

Q: Display starred chat messages on a user's site profile

Jon EricsonEver since chat was introduced as a third place, it's been a bit of a third wheel. A: Is it acceptable to insult god in a user profile?

JaydlesWendikidd mostly nailed this, but here's the semi-official guideline: Generally speaking, your "about me" is just that—what you want to share with the world, and we try to allow users a good bit of freedom there. However, in the rare cases where what's there is likely to be truly offensive to l...

A: Add sortable columns to Data Explorer's query results

Tim StoneI added support for this for tables with <= 5000 results (as a quick n' dirty way to handle IE's less-than-optimal performance here), pending a pull and redeploy of Data Explorer. The sorting is very basic and single-column to start with, but if more advanced use cases come up it could be expand...

When more than 5000 results, no sort.

I have been thinking ... for those people who are clear on their purposes in life, they choose actions that would serve their purposes the best. For those who don't have clear defined goals in life (there are so many of them), maybe their goals and the preferences of their goals can be inferred from their actions? Maybe a lot of times people's inferred goals are not exactly what they want?

so I was designing the structure of a new network for a program I'm creating, and my mate was like 'why did you get another server just to host the database on?'; I pointed them to StackStatus :)

1:50 PM
SO has nice maintenance page, but other network...

user202362
@cybermonkey google acted funny, not SE acted funny ... now chat crashed on my PC when I tried to log in because I cleared cache

user202362
but I can still chat here on my mac

ETA for fix: 6-8 weeks

1:51 PM
:)
@chmod666telkitty Different servers.

user202362
yeah I realized that

maybe SE should start investigating offloading its infrastructure to AWS or something (y'know, when something fails it'll automatically fail over, in fact I'm surprised SE doesn't have a failover DB server for backup)

(and so I came here just because SE is down :)

At least this gives me a chance to test some CSS tweaks related to the site notice. :)

1:54 PM
> We are narrowing down the Windows Cluster issue affecting Stack Overflow

@cybermonkey you're not serious, right? Because they have all that...

Also, why CSS-less SE?

There's your problem right there. Use a decent server OS and avoid the issue :P

@rene so why hasn't it failed over, if it really is a DB issue as the StackStatus Twitter says?

1:55 PM
#stackoverflow is down, google cache to rescue :) https://t.co/UG4Ha5QGJU
LOL

surely failover servers are designed for situations just like this?

The cluster is broken. That is beyond repair

Blocks everyone and goes back to SO-less super slow work

@rene ah, true
aww, now I have to get back to doing real work

We are narrowing down the Windows Cluster issue affecting Stack Overflow.

user202362
1:57 PM

Actually why is cdn.sstatic not down?

@Feeds what about the other SE sites? they're affected as well

user202362

@UNICYCLEZRDEBESTINDEHERE Why should it be? It's not like it needs the DB in any way.

user202362
why meta error screen so boring? >_<

1:58 PM
@cybermonkey SE have changed their name to Stack Overflow, that might be what they mean.

Only meta and SO loads, weird

@terdon I thought it was that Stack Overflow was made a division of SE, not that SE actually changed it's name back?
@UNICYCLEZRDEBESTINDEHERE error pages or the actual full sites?

This is the second incident with the cluster, right?

@cybermonkey Never loads

@cybermonkey AFAIK, and I might just be totally confused, the current situation is that SO Inc. runs the SE Network, which SO (the site) belongs to.

2:01 PM
Sorry guys

@cybermonkey No, Stack Exchange is now part of Stack Overflow. They changed the company name. I can't find the blog post for some reason but check out the description on blog.stackoverflow.com:
> ABOUT US

Welcome! We are Stack Overflow, home of Stack Exchange, Stack Overflow Careers, and over 100 Q&A sites.

Or something. I've basically just decided to ignore the whole name change for now, unless and until somebody provides some clear official guidance.

@terdon you're reading to much into Nick's StackStatus update tweets :)

this's persuaded me set up database replication with failover within the code (so if db connection fails, it automatically falls back to the other db)

Stack Overflow is coming back online now.

2:03 PM
@Feeds read-only mode is better than 'omg stack overflow is offline'

@balpha Ah, well, I was trying to give him a loophole :)

@cybermonkey ...and causes the other DB to fail too? ;)

> Sorry, your request could not be completed because it looked suspicious. If you meant to perform an action on Stack Overflow, please return to the previous page and try again.
I can't login

that ^

Try looking less suspicious. :)

2:05 PM
@IlmariKaronen nah, since the replication will be cold (i.e, regular replication every few hours, avoiding whatever caused the db to fail). would mean that some recent stuff might not be there, but at least i'd be better than a total db failure

Android.se does render a page now

Yay! We're back!

@StackOverflow IS FULLY BACK NOW! :()
:)

Ok, Post mortem on my desk by Monday, enjoy your weekend. ;)

I can unblock everyone now :P
