Ragequit? "please delete me" in profile. Edited several old posts to remove profanity from them before posting some of his own. Odd. stackexchange.com/users/4284487/adam-barak?tab=activity

@NormalHuman to save you the trouble, I'll just say that right now the API is broken for user deletion and vote invalidation. Hoping that doesn't take too long to fix, but I guess it's been broken for a while.

@Shog9 - You here? We could use your help for something serious.

@TravisJ oh?

@Shog9 - One of our chat users received a death threat via email.
From an SO user.

@TravisJ greeaat. Ask him to forward that on to team@, please

12:36 AM
@Shog9 - This user had just come off a 1 year suspension today. I will have him forward it to team@

Yeah I'm actually pretty sure I'm going to report it to the police. He's emailing my personal email account.
Hello is this Cody Herring from Slalom Consulting (codyh@slalom.com)?

I advise you if once I'm back to the chat you keep being an asshole I will get to you in your city and then your home to hurt you really bad.

This is Adam Barak.

I salute you from a city near Halab (Syria). I have some friends of yours in your neighbourhood.
I'd be happy to forward the original emails to a moderator. I'll very likely forward to the police as well, though I doubt anything will come of it.

@Codeman do both. Also tell the police they can contact us for additional details regarding the sender if need-be.

@Shog9 thanks :) how do I contact the mod team apart from the flag I already did?

@Codeman team@stackexchange.com

thanks.
sigh there are really some assholes out there.
nice, and he just set off the smoke detector, too. lol
he was downvoting all of my stuff.
@Shog9 is there precedent for this? AKA who should I contact, etc... I know it's the internet, but emailing my personal email with death threats is not okay

12:46 AM
@Codeman yeah. Contact your local authorities, and send as many details as you can to us.
That's about all you can do; chances are, it's an empty threat... but to be on the safe side, report it.

yeah, that's my thought

For reference, this was the account they were using: stackoverflow.com/users/3971020

some guy says "I'm in Syria, I have friends near you", chances are they're just being an asshole, but better to be safe than sorry
not sure what kind of ability SO has to get IP addresses and that sort of thing, but... it's really not something I think should just be let go
wow. he's going to my Github and sending me threats to cut my head off there, too

That's why I try to use different aliases for everything.

I mean... for me, it's a networking/career thing. You want your SO profile to be visible on Github and vice versa

12:53 AM

TODAY IS THE DAY!!!! TODAY IS THE DAY I CAST MY FIRST STACKOVERFLOW CLOSE VOTE!!!!

@TravisJ which was using a yopmail account at one time, and could trivially have been hijacked...

I realize it was a weak reference. I think that is all of the information I have to offer unfortunately.

yeah, don't stress about it
unless you're using a disposable email for anything that might reflect badly on you if abused, in which case absolutely do stress about that

@NormalHuman If you're speaking of the Lounge stuff... trust me, much more was going on in there than swearing.

@Codeman If it helps any, I believe this is a persistent troll that we've dealt with before. They've gone by the names Adam Barak, Barack Obama, Sufi Developer, dasdom, myth, and others. They were the ones responsible for flooding chat with swastika avatars a year or so ago, and have made threats against multiple members of the site over the last couple of years.
They troll others via email, Google+, and Twitter as well. They trolled me for a while on the site and off. The thing is, I've had conversations with the guy where he apologized and contributed well for a while, then someone would say something about Palestine or something else that set him off and he'd flip out and start attacking people again.
They also read chat transcripts of the Tavern and other places, and have attempted to troll this room by dumping things that Smoky would pick up, then immediately deleting them. Real fun person to deal with.

I sadly remember that.

@BradLarson thanks. yeah, he claimed he was from Syria and he had friends near me and he'd cut my head off, etc.
because I kick muted him for one minute for calling me an idiot quite rudely
any chance of getting the FBI or something involved? If he's a consistent problem on SO chat, they might share IP addresses or something similar.
I'm not an LEO but if someone claimed to be from Syria and threatened to kill people, I'd probably investigate it :P
I know chances are it's some loser living in his mom's basement trying to feel powerful

"Hello, sysadmin Jenny speaking"
"I want to talk to the sysadmin, not to support!"
"Yes, I'm the sysadmin for the mail servers."
"No, I mean, the person who actually works with them!"
"Yes, that's me."
"No, I mean the technical person, not support or customer service!"
"Yes, that's me."
"NO! I need to talk to the TECH PEOPLE!"
After a while I gave up, muted my phone and called around the office "There's a guy here who doesn't believe I'm actually working with the mail system. Can one of you guys (all of whom were men) please talk to him?"

in Unix and Linux on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, yesterday, by Jenny D
My colleague took over the call, and after that I only heard his side, which went:
"I don't know that."
"Sorry, I have no idea."
"Sorry, that's not something I work with."
"No, sorry, no idea."
*incoherent yelling*
"Well, you were on the phone with the right person a while back, but you didn't want to talk to her, and now I don't think she wants to talk with you!"
The customer hung up.

@Braiam Well, that didn't go over completely well. Culture clash I guess.

Delightful

@Doorknob you want to learn spanish?

@Doorknob You have to be able to read past the typos and the lack of diacritics.

3:26 AM
@Braiam I'm taking a class in my school.
@tchrist Haha, yeah, I've noticed that

@Doorknob that's one thing, but you want to actually be able to speak/read/write spanish?

It's like any other chat outside ELU: very quickly typed and without much attention to details. Plenty of errors any native speaker in that situation makes.
Fumblefingery, basically.

I have an excuse... my keyboard is in english, and switching between both is just a pain

@Braiam Oh zing! :)

@Braiam Uhh. Not sure yet. I do find it interesting (languages in general are interesting to me), but it's only been 1.5 years.

3:27 AM
@Braiam It’s not too bad with the Mac bindings.
Slows me down a little, but I’d rather put them in. The weird thing is that I almost never misread what's being said without them.
Your brain just leaps to what it has to have been.

the pain is not due that but this bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865
right now is on alt+caps, but each time, I forget :/

On my laptop, I use compose+'+<letter>. It's slightly painful, but compose+' becomes muscle memory-ish after a while.
(compose+~+n also works)

Alt-e + vowel for acute, alt-n + vowel or n for tilde, etc.

it isn't natural once you are used to the spanish keyboard

Alt-i plus vowels for cîrcumflex.
@Braiam Understood.
Evil starboard bug.
I wish they would learn to count properly.

Now I'm curious... how did you learn different languages, @tchrist?

@hichris123 You get to learn one extra language per Intelligence point over 12 on 3d6.

@tchrist Is there a ring that gives +n to Int? :P

I meant how did you become proficient in the language. >.>

@hichris123 I certainly hope so. I'd be very disappointed if this were real life.
2

@hichris123 immerse yourself in it

Move someplace where nobody speaks your language, and then date such people.
It sticks to you then.

3:37 AM
damn @tchrist, stop stealing my spotlight!
*shakesfist*

@Braiam I know that's probably the best way, but it's kinda hard... I mean, I'm taking a Spanish class currently but we're not fully immersed nor can I easily move to somewhere where I'd speak only Spanish.
@tchrist Is this from experience or guesswork?

@Braiam ♬ ¿Noche oscura? ¿Nada ves?

well, I didn't exactly move to a place where they can speak english either... at least not physically

fair enough.

@hichris123 I don't guess when speaking ex cathedra.
Damn song.

3:39 AM
@hichris123 change the language to your phone/pc, I bet you that in a week you got the nag of it

Mine actually is in Spanish mode.

I'm thinking of switching it to french, to remember it

@Braiam So I should just speak in Spanish in here? Okay then. ;P

@hichris123 My own and that of many others I've seen.
@hichris123 Por donde fueres, haz lo que vieres.

@tchrist yeah, I figured. So is that what you'd primarily attribute your success in said languages to, or...?

3:41 AM
@hichris123 To enjoyment.
But do it when you are young.

in more than a way, I suppose :P

Pues.

@tchrist I wish I started when I was younger. It'd be much easier.

If you learn a couple Romance languages reasonably well, you can pick up most of the others at need without all that much work, honestly.

There is nothing like that with English. Knowing English allows you to jump to nothing else the way knowing Spanish and wanting to jump to Portuguese or Italian, or even French, does.

I was under the presumption that english helps with german
or was russian?

No, it has some help for German.
But not like even Spanish to French in my estimation.

@tchrist See, while I understood the literal meaning of that, I had to use Google Translate to get the actual idiom.

3:46 AM
@hichris123 Oh, it's a frozen phrase.
Proverb. With old language.
Like if we said "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife."

I just didn't understand that because I had no idea what "fueres" and "vieres" are. Some form of subjunctive, or something? (We haven't learned such "advanced" topics yet :P)

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in title: Reduce your wrinkles and fine lines by MauriceMarshall on askubuntu.com

@tchrist What's the difference? I mean, there's traditional proverbs I know (teach a man to fish)... but what makes an idiom an idiom and not a proverb (and vice versa)?

@Doorknob the verbose version would be: a donde quiera que tu fueres, haz lo que tu vieres alli

@hichris123 What would you call "When in Rome, do as the Romans"?
Which of course is exactly what it means.

3:54 AM
apparently, an OP appreciated my common sense call

About backticks, or something else?

else

@Doorknob Oh, those are future subjunctives. Not really used any longer in the normal course of things in modern Spanish, but you'll read them in older literature and sometimes in legal language. They are still productive in Portuguese though.

@tchrist we still use them

@Braiam If you say so. :)
> Aunque me quitare la vida, todavía confiaré en Él.
If you call that active use, ok then. :)
It just sounds old-timey to me.
But there are a huge number of places where they've been speaking Spanish a very long time, and many have their own habits and traditions.

4:00 AM
@tchrist Yeah, I see that clearly it would be a proverb now, but I was thinking alomg the lines of 'idioms can't be understood piecemeal', and that phrase couldn't.

Probably all of them do.

@tchrist I wouldn't say it like that

Good thing you're not Job, then. :)

actually is just a nitpick, quitare -> quitase
unless I have suicidal tendencies, in which case it just confuses me

No, future subjunctive is quitare, past subjunctive is quitase or quitara. Te lo juro.
Even though he should take my life, still shall I trust in Him.
It’s a quote from Borges, himself quoting the Bible.
> Job testifica de su confianza en Jehová y dice: Aunque me matare, en Él confiaré; Él también será mi salvación.
> He aquí, aunque él me matare, en él confiaré; pero defenderé delante de él mis caminos.
It's all very old-style talk.
Today we would say aunque me quite la vida.

4:08 AM
you forgot the subject! >:(

Yes well, I had it in mind. :)
I see why it reads funny without the earlier él.

"All your base are belong to us" is a broken English phrase found in the opening cutscene of the 1991 video game Zero Wing which became a popular Internet meme. The quote is included in the European version of the game, which features poorly translated English from the original Japanese version. The meme developed from this as the result of a GIF animation depicting the opening text which was initially popularized on the Something Awful message forums. == Selected transcript == == Mentions in media == The phrase or some variation of lines from the game has appeared in numerous articles, books...

That's where the "do not want" meme comes from, by the way (although it's a less common one).

@JamesENL That answer is No. It really is a debug question and to properly answer you would need to explain how to use WinDbg and a .dmp file to do crash analysis. That is really too broad. However Defrag tools has some extensive video's on how to do that.

I've found a spammer who tries to spamvertize his site, using edit suggestions:
http://stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/10426318
I have reported this spammer, but the Smokey engineers here may want to look at it.
I'm aware Smokey doesn't watch pending edits, so for Smokey there's not a problem yet.
But the site that the editor is trying to spamvertize - we may want to add it to the blacklist.
