Q: Badge for general sharing on Social Media

Luke GedeonI frequently promote questions and the homepage of a couple SE sites that are still in beta. Since these sites are new and I don't have a huge following, I am unlikely to get an Announcer badge for driving a lot of traffic to a single question, but I am getting a lot of people to visit the sites ...

What's this guy talking about? Can someone enlighten me?

Announcer badge for the site rather than a single question.

OK but how should that be defined?

6:15 PM
IDK, he doesn't really specify

Maybe for the sum of views, rather than the views for separately shared questions.

Yeah, as long as each view has diff IP.

OK, so let's see. Why should we be doing this, again?

we like badges?

There are way better badge ideas that haven't got implemented.
@rene We like badgers?

6:18 PM
This one would draw attention to young sites, and could draw new users in. It would be in the interest of SO the company.

IF the announcer badge has merit, then this badge is the same kind of idea.

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. You need a badge to promote positive behavior. So you first have define what behavior you want to see, if that is at the level you want it to be and if not, invent a badge to get that going

@rene Exactly. And how will this badge promote any positive behavior that isn't being promoted by "announcer", "booster" and "publicist"?
It'd just be a pair of badges that are more easily attainable.

Note that the request is for a beta sites.

@S.L.Barth Well, if it's going to happen, then I hope lowering badge thresholds also happens, and so does making site-specific badges.
Which are highly unlikely IMO.

6:23 PM
@tchrist Wow, even ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs?!

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I think that is the correct conclusion so far

A badge for drawing in new users and aiding them along might actually work.
But I'm more interested in the SO mentorship program - which can also earn the mentor a badge.
Drawing new users in is one thing, and may be good for the company - more views.
But for the wellbeing of the sites, we want good new users.

user259867
6:47 PM
@SmokeDetector fp- on certain sites if not most of them, restricting email check to answers would make sense.

@Normal, question, what does "Early Warning" do to Popular tags, OK-as-a-top-tag and Never-should-be-on-their-own?

user259867
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Popular is just a technical detail of forming the Okay array; I dumped the results of a SEDE query into Popular, so that the manually formed list of not-so-popular but Okay tags would be more manageable. Only Okay is used by the script: if the top tag of a question is not found in it, a comment is posted encouraging adding a broader tag.

user259867
The comment suggests some plausible tags to add, by using Related Tags list.

user259867
@SmokeDetector fp-

user259867
if (Vague.indexOf(topTag) > -1 && tags.length == 1) {
    comment.text = comment.text + 'Tag ('+topTag+') should not be the only tag a question has....';     }

6:54 PM
@NormalHuman Yeah it looks like "email in body" has roughly a 6% success rate.
PS: is that data in tabular form anywhere?

user259867
It's in MySQL table on Undo's server... otherwise not.

user259867
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. And for vague, the line I posted above says what it does: if there is only one tag, and it's on the Vague list, then a comment is posted.

@NormalHuman FTP or SSH access for all? :)

@NormalHuman An what about "OK"? Will it not post a comment if there's an "OK" tag?

user259867
The checks are independent. Each of them may or may not add a sentence to the comment.text field. After all the checks are run, if comment.text is nonempty, it's posted.

user259867
6:59 PM
Say, the tag transformation is popular but vague. So it won't trigger the first kind of comments, but will trigger the second kind, if used on its own.

Aha, so no action will be taken regarding the "popular or otherwise sufficient" ones?

user259867
Right. If the top tag is [calculus], there will be no action.

@NormalHuman I'll probably be writing a 'who are the people in the community growth neighborhood' post in the very near future. To be clear, we all work on every site when it needs whatever talent we have - but a few of us primarily focus on SO, more than a few primarily focus on the SE network, some focus more on things that encompass everything, then there's the international team, operations team within community growth, and more. I'm not going to post a full organizational chart of the team, but I think if people saw how we're positioned, they'd be 80% less worried about this change. — Tim Post ♦ Sep 16 at 16:05

Does the low quality filter not block stuff like that on betas?

@JeremyBanks I imagine it has an auto low quality flag on it

user259867
Is there low quality block for answers?

Hrm?

user259867
Edited by OP into shape. I guess he has a cat.

@NormalHuman yes

My hobby: using 10k tools to find questions with 4 CVs that already left the queue. Flag VLQ just before casting the 5th close vote. Automatic helpful flag for me, automatic downvote for OP.

user259867
I guess that wouldn't make a good xkcd comic, though.

@NormalHuman Probably not a good idea.

user259867
Why?

It could be viewed as gaming the flag system.

By whom? The flag is automatically dismissed as helpful, since the question is closed.

Exactly.

user259867
Well. Don't hate the player, then.

You get a helpful flag without any other intervention.
And do you really need that extra downvote?

user259867
Yes, yes, and yes. I need 400 downvotes per day.

You're not double-downvoting, then?

I have my downvote, the Community has its own.

user259867
Though most of the time, I have none of mine left.

Whoa, today's XKCD is awesome

@Undo Ahhh... of course it's another one of these things. Thanks for the heads-up. I just shrugged it off as a silly simple game.

From Munroe? Bahahaha
