@drachenstern - Wow, you have me reading a thread for a half hour. congrats, you should get a badge.

haha, I spent about that long too, if not more ;)

still going

I have an internal clock that tells me to stop after a period of time ;)

Okay, done after 14 pages....
Gotta finish some code...
later

6:24 PM
lol

Ah, RDP over airplane wifi isn't going too...smoothly

6:40 PM
It's the last day of Google's generosity though, so figured I should take advantage of that :P
I was going to try and finish up this code too, but it seems my typing is lagging quite a bit, so..
makes excuses

Anyway, I find it funny that my request to remove useless features and maybe instead get a harsher treatment is being downvoted as a result of a mod complaining about my misbehavior.

@radp Is it really?

On the one side you think I'm up to no good, on the other you think I don't deserve harsh stuff.
@TimStone Is it really misbehavior? No it isn't, as I tried to argue in comments.
Ivo hasn't dignified my retorts with a comment, so I guess he isn't impressed.

@radp I meant about the downvoting, but I see what you mean in the comments now...hrm.
I hadn't seen the post until now

I actually wanted to flag his "useless flagging" message (as I do find it kinda insulting) but that could've been taken as a "joke flag."

It seems like a useless rant to me. shrugs

7:00 PM
I don't get why two people up voted his comment when there's a low likelihood they'd be aware of whatever he was referencing (I'm surely not, at least).

I always thought room owners could change the host too. I've definitely told several users the wrong thing then

@RebeccaChernoff Where is the rant part pray tell?
Is the rant part the bit where I ask about harsher handling maybe?
Is the rant part the bit where I merely note that all "kicking" does is forward me to the room list page?

Kicking isn't the only option available.

Did somebody actually get kicked? I don't think I've ever seen that happen, other than mods testing it on me

Harsher handling is available.

7:03 PM
I know, but it's useless and useless stuff should be made useful or removed.

Although I guess it's not really obvious when somebody gets kicked

Anyway, the request makes sense to me. That being said, it obviously gets less priority than fixing the desktop notifications :P

It is your opinion that kicking is useless. Not mine.

@RebeccaChernoff Maybe you haven't seen it in action.

Hmm, perhaps I should have answered rather than commented.

7:03 PM
There's no way on the receiving end to tell you have been "kicked"

@radp Well, that's a different matter. I requested they change that ages ago

@MichaelMrozek That's the whole point of my first sentence.

Well, my day is complete now that I've seen ascii art in chat.
rolls her eyes

> Kicking in chat is pretty useless and/or pointless.

7:04 PM
waves at Josh out the window

@radp That somehow translates to "you should tell users when they've been kicked"?

@RebeccaChernoff Then why are you still here?

@RebeccaChernoff Over time my eyes have learned to slide past Chacha's posts without actually seeing them. It's extremely handy

@MichaelMrozek No, but that's you admitting that, as it is, kicking is half-baked.
Chat has this awesome silencing feature that would be much more effective in my opinion

7:06 PM
It is extremely similar to people asking what the point of kicking is on irc.
@radp, kicking isn't a timeout. It is a warning.

@RebeccaChernoff To be fair, kicking is pretty useless on IRC too. Kickbanning actually serves a purpose

/kickban!
Ah, @MichaelMrozek beat me to the punch

@MichaelMrozek Again, warning vs timeout.

@RebeccaChernoff Why would you kick someone to warn them? Chat already has that feature, you send "hey, stop that" as a message

Meh, before SE chat was in place, I had all my rooms in +m and all people getting +v; troublemakers get a -v.
I used silencing ante-litteram and claim prior art!

7:07 PM
@MichaelMrozek In IRC it tends to be much more high traffic..

@MichaelMrozek It is a bit more official than that.

@radp Are you on freenode? Get rid of all that and just +q the people that are causing problems

@MichaelMrozek Quakenet. (What does +q do?)

@RebeccaChernoff Mods have blue nicks for a reason

Like the user last night who was dismissing anyone who wasn't a mod.

7:08 PM
There's a traffic jam in the air :o
But anyway, almost there.. disappears for a bit

@radp Quiets the user so they can't talk

Oh, I don't think QNet has such a flag :)

Anyway. I think kicking is fairly useless, but I've never seen it used so I don't have a big opinion either way. I think per-user silencing would actually be useful
I also care about the whole thing very little, since I've not been in any SO chat rooms where there was actually a big problem that required user silencing

meh, so far it's worked like this:
1. poke fun at Ivo
2. get sent to the room list.
In a way, I want it harsher so people stop using it with a light heart.

You should stop poking fun at Ivo

7:12 PM
@MichaelMrozek That's the "give up" way of going around it.

Become a meta mod and kick him twice as often?

@radp, to this point, you've just made sweeping statements without presenting a case as far as I can tell. Back it up, explain it. I think <x>, do <y> isn't immensely helpful.

@RebeccaChernoff Give me the time to write a reply.

No. NAO!

Mentioning the part about "it would discourage mods from kicking for no reason" might be good

7:14 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Done.

I just realized this argument is also happening in the question comments. You two are discussing this with each other, in two places, simultaneously

@radp I meant flesh out your question post.

@RebeccaChernoff Done too.

Ok, so now your question title is remove the command but your question content seems to be a feature request to make it obvious when you're kicked. q:

@RebeccaChernoff I think kicking doesn't work anyway. Why kick me from a room for a mod flag in another anyway?
(...why kick me for a mod flag anyway in the first place?)

7:18 PM
@radp You seem hung up on that example. If that's really your only problem then you might as well post "Please stop kicking me for stupid reasons"

NONE of that has to do with your meta post though. It might be the reason you're posting, but your post reflects NONE of that.
ie, what @MichaelMrozek said.

@RebeccaChernoff I know, but Ivo just had to post that comment, which puts unrelated "context" in the picture.

Granted, I also looked at the flag and didn't immediately act upon it. I recall doing that with a few of your other flags as well. >_<

(I'm still talking about that because the association still hasn't been changed by either of the two mods I'm talking with :P)

@radp, the reasons you're giving here for the feature request match the context @Ivo added. Your post doesn't reflect the reasons you're giving here.

7:20 PM
@RebeccaChernoff That's because my post doesn't want to be about the one kick about the one mod.
That'd be a rant.
I just think that kicking is broken.

But you have to explain why. Back up your argument.

I have.

As it is, your feature request is just "do <X>"

> Everything that happens when you are kicked is, you are sent to the room list. There's no kick message, no "kicked by" message, no kick reason, nothing. For all a user knows, it's either a transient bug or a network hiccup. How is that useful?

Except that your title says "remove the command"

7:22 PM
Yes, and my second paragraph also says "remove the command"

Meh, whatever, I fold. To me it is a poorly backed up feature request.

I hope the new title suits you better.

Don't write the post to suit me. Write the post so it is a well-written case for a feature request. (:

@RebeccaChernoff You're pointing out a problem with my post, I'm trying to fix it :)

It seems kinda weird that you need help writing a feature request post. (;
?

7:38 PM
You two are catching up rapidly:

@MichaelMrozek Thanks for pointing out that by default you get "show more X comments" after the 15th.
Been wondering about the algorithm used to decide when to fold comments and when not to.

@radp, think we can handle 3 more comments between the two of us?
(:

I see that pinning in here is still used for only the most important of information

@RebeccaChernoff sure.

@MichaelMrozek You're welcome.

Unicode has way too many stars. We need to find a use for all of these: ✩✪✫✬✭✮✯✰

That sounds like a dangerous challenge.

@RebeccaChernoff Besides, I doubt @balpha or @MarcGravell are even up to it
looks around obviously
I was trying to find an antistar, but apparently Unicode doesn't include one

7:53 PM
How about an anti-pin?

I'd be fine with that too
I guess I should count myself lucky Chacha doesn't control the meta system message

I don't know that I've ever seen a system message on meta. The contest one on SU and then on the SE2 during betas.
oy does not need its own star. |:

There was one on SO for the last election IIRC

7:56 PM
@MichaelMrozek almost a year ago? Before I was truly active.

@RebeccaChernoff it's based on use: I just considered the most common star reasons
You'd rather maybe have an "rchern" star reason?

I'm tempted to say oy, but it'll just get starred. Dilemma.
6

Maybe 'ow'?

The rchern star reason should come with a 1-rep penalty to the starrer. (;

@RebeccaChernoff and a 2-rep penalty for the starred?

7:58 PM
Sold

):
It isn't something I just say in chat. In college my roommates picked up saying oy, hehe.

I can't picture saying "oy" out loud
We need an MSO chat meetup so I can witness this
They made system messages more complicated; it took way too long to figure out how to do this:
In other news, the decision to not make me a meta mod continues to be a wise one

8:33 PM
Yay, just got someone signed up to the Writers.SE site. \o/ Hope they find it useful hehe.

some one?

@RebeccaChernoff ahahahahahahahaha!
Aside from being biologically fascinating
And the practical implications!
"Kids, Daddy and Daddy are coming for dinner tomorrow."

I admit, when I clicked I thought it'd be artificial insemination.

I left for two hours and missed...11 messages
I'm not impressed

shakes head Disappointing, really.

Yay for Gaming!
I got myself into another huge endless argument, except this is probably even less pleasant.

10:44 PM
I want to make fun of that argument, but I kind of care about it.

11:08 PM
@mootinator I see the song was too much for you :P

11:22 PM
I left for 2 hours and missed...9 messages.
I'm not impressed.
winks at @MichaelMrozek

11:34 PM
Clearly this day is a lost cause

@MichaelMrozek Maybe you should've committed to gaming after all!
