Q: Return HTTP 410 Gone for deleted spam questions

Ilmari KaronenStack Exchange has a pretty good relationship with Google. Often, new questions on Stack Overflow may get indexed by Google within seconds of being posted, or within minutes at most. Usually, this is a good thing, but it also makes SE a very tempting target for spammers. If Google happens to c...

@Shog9 Much better.

1:00 AM
@NormalHuman Eh, I trust employees even more than I trust moderators, for the most part.

user259867
Starszy projektant produktu, according to Google Translate. (Which makes sense, but "projektant" doesn't sound much as designer)

@Undo The diamond is getting too overloaded anyway. There should really be a different symbol for employees.

@IlmariKaronen Yes they do, if there's more than one in the org.

@IlmariKaronen I can keep track of it all in my head, but I can see where it'd be confusing for someone who either isn't as involved or is new.

Maybe ♥ :)

1:01 AM
@Undo trust both exactly as much as you can verify with facts or past experience. Both are human, both make mistakes and both have access to tools that can really screw things up when they do make mistakes.
...which is a really good reason not to give diamonds to folks until they need them.

@Shog9 Adding more information to that: Moderators had to be either appointed or elected, while employees had to pass an interview (probably a few of them).
@Shog9 Why not have a way to give folks diamonds without power?

(trivia: there's an internal Employee account state that gives access to some tools without needing rep or a diamond. Nothing too crazy, but...)
@Undo then it loses its meaning

Or with only [featured]-and-[status-*]-tag-adding

@Shog9 like 10k stats type stuff?

user259867
Like posting on meta without 5 rep

1:04 AM
some informational stuff, yeah. Also meta editing privs and probably a few other such things that I forget.

Then I suppose we're back at needing a different symbol for employees.

Not a Real Problem.

or, y'know, just badger 'em to put "employee" somewhere in their bio

A 1-repper with no diamond posting 'your site graduated, yay' is a little... jarring.

user259867
API returns is_employee field, shouldn't be hard to expose in UI.

1:05 AM
puts that he's employee in his bio... just a employee

@Undo yeah. I'd totally have to check the employee page to verify that they were actually a designer before I'd buy that.

Most folks don't even know that page exists, so it's probably not a good idea to set a precedent for that kind of stuff.
Just my opinion.

does it matter to most folks?
I mean, you have two options:
1) it's legit, let's celebrate!
2) it's bogus, let's burn the troll!

Maybe not, actually.

Doesn't take 100% of a site's membership to burn trolls

1:07 AM
True
Also... I don't think he's on the team page
Looking at the design section

I do kinda like the option "authoritative post" styles that only mods can use on Reddit. I may integrate that into DD.

Also, remember: there are hundreds of employees now, and only a handful you'd actually want to believe if they posted something like that.
Not like we've never had employees who decided it's a good idea to post crazy things...

@Undo Maybe he is a troll, and we've all been fooled. ;)

So, yeah - we've had this conversation a lot internally, and it's never gotten any traction because the proposed solution(s) doesn't actually solve the problem it wants to.

@NormalHuman edit hist o_0

What you really want to know is:
1) Was this post written by someone who is an employee when they wrote it, and
2) They were operating in an official capacity

1:14 AM
Yes, @Shog9, Gimme!

#1 is actually a lot trickier to verify than it sounds, but not impossible. #2 is... hard. Really difficult.

@Undo trust both exactly as much as you can verify with facts or past experience. Both are human, both make mistakes and both have access to tools that can really screw things up when they do make mistakes.

@AndrewT. you could probably edit to fit your answer more precisely and make the resulting question less objectionable
as it stands, it reads, "what is the best video for everything?"

@AwesomePoodles there's nothing "polite" about it.

Hmm, a lot of these spam posts have very similar formatting: a single long paragraph of text, followed by another paragraph with long bare URL and very little if any other text, sometimes with another text link to the same URL in the first paragraph. It almost looks as if they're based on some kind of a template, although there does seem to be some individual variation. Still, I wonder if that could be turned into a useful heuristic for Smokey.
