On the plus side, it made the bug I reported in March prominent enough to be fixed.

If we take it down, then we won’t be able to ban dirty SO posts anymore.

user259867
@tchrist github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/blob/master/findspam.py#L7 (not a regex, except for splitting the text)

Thanks.
It’s funny. I would have just done a regex. Maybe (\w+)(\W+\1){4}\b or some such.
But I wouldn't do it that way if I were writing in C. Probably. Although I have turned to regexes a lot more in Java than I ever would in C.

user259867
It was a regex originally, but a slow one.

1:58 AM
I bet!
Backtracking sucks.

(?i)(?P<word>[a-zA-Z]+).*((\\b| )+(?P=word)){5,}

Oops.
That .* is the bug.
Of course that killed it.

Super-duper slow trying all the possibilities that you don't even half care about.

user259867
in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Jul 3 at 16:11, by 1999
Maybe it's just trying to do too much, allowing arbitrary stuff in between. Back-to-back repetition like lalalalala or penis penis penis would be caught by this simpler regex http://stackoverflow.com/a/9079897/

user259867
2:01 AM
@SmokeDetector ignore-

Tim's pattern still looks unclever, and he’s usually good at these things.
No reason to have .+? in there either.
You just want a sequence of 5 repeating "words" separated by any sort of non-word sequence.
Never do .* or .+? or whatnot.
Plus minimal matching is slower than maximal anyway. Even so, you hit catastrophic backtracking.

user259867
It took some tuning up over time. Things like xx:xx:xx:xx:xx were cropping up (addresses)

user259867
So the colon was removed from separator list, etc.

That makes sense.
It is not hard to devise a regex that will lose a race to the heat-death of the universe.

user259867
Is there a good explanation of why non-greedy is slower somewhere?

user259867
> in practice, lazy quantifiers often are faster.

user259867
This appears to be the opposite of what you said.

The thing is that with backtracking you have more states in practice. Watch:
mac(tchrist)% perl -Mre=debug -le 'print "$1, then $3" if "fee fie foe fum" =~ /^((\S+?)\S*?)((?:\s+?(\2\S*?))+?)$/' | & wc -l
     207
mac(tchrist)% perl -Mre=debug -le 'print "$1, then $3" if "fee fie foe fum" =~ /^((\S+)\S*)((?:\s+(\2\S*))+)$/' | & wc -l
     125
Those do the same thing, but the lazy matches are slower.
Because they have more states.
And no, I wouldn't write anything like that for real. I'd used named captures and /x mode, etc etc. This is just a quick demo.

I was away from GL for a couple months
and they let the unanswered list grow to 125
that is just too much
in one day I brought it to 107 (by voting good answers)
and now I answered 7 quick ones (which will need votes)
and cast 11 close votes
gotta get that site back under control ha

user259867
What's with LifeHacks, is that one under control?

2:18 AM
If you ever care, there is a graphical regex debugging and profiling tool that lets you visualize the internal -Mre=debug stuff in a way that hides all the ugly and makes sense.

It could be on-topic if you shared the code you use now, if that's as simple as you describe it. Based on that users with both a music and programming background might be able to help you out. — rene 5 mins ago
