> Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying word for word from references such as books, magazines, research materials or the internet.
So copying from a blog post that you happened to post on the internet is plagiarism?
Some people just are incompatible with rigorous definitions.

It has to be somebody else's words portrayed as your own.

Well, duh.
> Students can now access our network using their own electronic devices – laptops. Netbooks, iPads, iTouches, tablets, cell phones, etc.
Sigh…

?

Problems:
1. Period after laptop should be comma
2. iPad is subset of tablet, should be removal
3. iTouch is not a thing
4. Netbooks really aren't a thing either
It goes on to warn:

@bjb568 It depends. Self-plagiarism is a thing.

How?

Submitting your paper to two different classes (and doing badly on both) is a pretty good example

1:14 AM

Q: Attitudes towards self-plagiarism

alexI am planning to write several papers exploring various aspects of the same scientific question. Each of these papers must have an introduction which motivates it and explains the relationship between the problem and what others have studied in the past. It would be fantastic if I could simply ...

user259867
@bjb568 You publish an article in a journal. Later change the title and publish it again in another journal. That's self-plagiarism.

meh... So is it plagiarism if a politician gives the same speech in 10 different cities?

If s/he's claiming it's a unique speech, yes.

user259867
@CRABOLO Submitting to a journal asserts (explicitly, there's a form) that the work is original and has not been published elsewhere.

user259867
Unrelated... I've never assigned group homework (hated it as a student) but thinking of changing that a bit. Still hate the idea of assigned groups. Thinking of this: each submitted assignment [a Matlab program, specifically] can have up to two names on it.

user259867
1:18 AM
Is this reasonable?

That's good way to do it. Yes. I like.

@NormalHuman Definitely. We had a similar policy in a few of my engineering courses and that appeared to reduce the number of people pulled aside for copying assignments while encouraging people to bounce ideas off of each other

user259867
Thanks; will do that.

Name: Crabolo, Google

@NormalHuman basically you are telling them that they can help each other, but if they want to go lone wolf the can too

1:24 AM
Yes! Allowing (but not requiring) small teams to complete assignments is great. I don't like working on group assignments (any difference in skill--positive or negative--makes the experience unpleasant), but every now and then there's another person who's equally matched with me and I'd be open to working with them.

and I was freaking out because some weird stuff stuck on the cursor
apparently went away when I sent the message

Twitter food fight continues.

I wasn't planning to have dinner... until now

@Normal This is meh. Almost always in a group only one person actually works.
Making copying somebody else legal doesn't solve the problem of the copier not doing work.
Students cannot work in groups.

1:33 AM
bleh..

Bouncing ideas off each other is fine, but you wouldn't have a copying problem if that was what's happening

students can help eachother or one student who knows what s/he's doing can maybe help other student to get it

well, there's a guy out there that you should be capable of giving orders, taking orders and cooperate... and the thing appeared again, it freaks me!

user259867
@bjb568 If #2 doesn't do anything, #1 doesn't have to keep working with them.

@bjb568 Until you both went for the same idea (because it sounded totally logical at the time) and both of you screwed up the assignment badly (in a unique way)

1:35 AM
@NormalHuman #1 and #2 are friends. #1 helps #2 in english and #2 helps #1 in math. Both don't have to do either, but it helps both to cheat.

user259867
@bjb568 You don't know college math majors...

that works on the supposition that both are "friends"

@KevinBrown This is an actual problem?
@Braiam or once can coerce info out of others

user259867
A low % of students even know the name of someone else in the same class of 15 people.

There's a skewl culture here of copying, and nobody does their own homework except me and a couple of others. So that's where I'm coming from.

user259867
1:37 AM
Despite my efforts to change that.

user259867
@bjb568 The college atmosphere is somewhat more competitive.

If they're good students, it could help, I guess.
It could also alienate those who are too shy to talk to classmates in the rare event that they're stuck

user259867
They can talk to me...

@bjb568 Yes, I've seen it multiple times where one student thinks "Oh, you can do it way better by doing X" and when bouncing ideas, X comes up as a working solution. And then suddenly everyone tries to implement X and misses the really obvious requirement
@NormalHuman Sounds like more of a cultural issue than anything

Eh, well, I guess it's different in college.
But in my crummy highschool, people just want to get by and avoid work
A policy like that at my highschool would just further encourage that attitude

1:43 AM
@NormalHuman that's actually a cultural thing, here people knows enough from the generation+3 to generation-2 to keep a conversation ongoing
or at least that's the economy deparment

Oh noes, I just realized, I may need to learn my 50 states now that I'm in US Hist :o

@bjb568 right
@bjb568 So much for "we do not lie, cheat, or steal." Let them fail, but expel them first.

@Braiam That sentence is one word too long; delete either of the first two and it remains true.

@tchrist if I add bearable it may change your assessment

2:37 AM
@tchrist Yeah, but they rarely get caught.
And it's like everyone
and I hear all the honors kids do it in their group (honors is a group of 8th and 9th graders who take advanced english, math, and history together, mostly a cult, you can take advanced regardless of honors status)
(or like reverse cult, they get worshipped since they're supposedly smarter, and they have field trips all the time that interfere with actual learning)

why I need permission of the owner?

@Braiam Why do you need permission of the owner to destroy their data?

exactly!

ummm...

2:47 AM
is not fun that way :(

haha!

user259867
So you can't delete-vote from school network...

Apparently the only reason I was given a copy of the guidelines is because a kid one year modified the permissions of a friend's user directory when a tech left his computer logged in.

@NormalHuman You're not actually destroying their data...

user259867
