Today is the 5th birthday of User Experience! A post to celebrate the occasion: What is the best font for extremely limited space, i.e. will fit the most READABLE text in the smallest space? More into Graphic Design territory, but GD didn't exist then.

wonder if that pinged @uni or not?

user259867
I'm not proposing to rename the Tavern; the name is established.

But maybe the RUOD room on Math could use the name... "In case of emergency"

I think that has a ring to it...

user259867
3:29 AM
Except it's a misleading title for a room that stands empty most of the time. :/

Right.
It also is a bit misleading because it isn't exactly supposed to be used only for emergencies.

I'll license it liberally for whomever wants to use it - MIT, perhaps?

Out of curiosity, what else have you categorized as "in case of SE/SO emergency"?
(@MattDMo)

@MattDMo *whoever :)

@apnorton nothing yet, I just created the folder. I'm a Python guy, so perhaps Martijn Pieter's contact info?
@tchrist I can never remember which to use. grammarbook.com just gave me a helpful hint, but I'll probably forget it. I'm getting old...

3:37 AM
If you don’t remember, always only use who forms.

Now I'm curious... I thought it would have been "whomever" because it's the object of the preposition "for."

From the page I referenced: A word to the wise: Whomever is even more of a vogue word than whom. Many use it indiscriminately to sound cultured, figuring that no one will know any better.

@apnorton It isn’t.
The entire clause is the object of for.
And whoever is the subject of wants.

Ah. ok.

Give it to whoever wants it.
Give it to whomever you see.
The preposition is completely immaterial.

3:39 AM
That's much clearer to see side by side.
(Of course, this is why I like to stick to context-free grammars...)
Well, I'm headed offline. Goodnight, all.

user259867
How would graduation affect this?

In the case of chem.SE, it's more new users dumping homework.
Of course, we nuke them, but then again, the pearl/trash ratio has decreased.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Well, you'd hardly expect that complaint from a low-rep user. :/

Ron was actually bringing this up in the meta a year before our graduation.

Q: State of the Union

ronI've been active on Chem SE for about 6 months. My perception is that things have changed significantly over that time. It seems to me that there were more thought provoking questions 6 months ago more answers to these questions more comments and dialog more voting on questions and answers ...

But the reasoning was something else.

Don't all sites have issues with quality control?

They do. But some people are here for the sake of fun.

5:19 AM
Aside: I notice there is a tight competition for #2 spot among all-time editors, while #1 is uncontested.

Of course, everyone is.
But I mean, some people don't care about meta and stuff.
They just look for good questions to answer.
@NormalHuman That #1 is hardly a guy.
But note that I've become an avid user was after those guys.
Martin's account is 2 years old, Ron is one year and half, but I don't even have yearling.

user259867

@NormalHuman Must be a nice problem to have.
> That puts ELU in 6th place when it comes to close rate. (For the curious, the top 5 are Programmers, The Workplace, Network Engineering, Christianity, and Patents.) When compared to the median close rate of 15% (TeX—LaTeX and DBA), the grammar questions look pretty bad.

@NormalHuman Bingo!

By "nice problem" I meant competition for #2 editor slot.

user259867
But is there a difference between kindly (adjective) and kind, other than style?

5:31 AM
I haven't done anything more on it because I didn't feel (quite) annoyed enough to make a community proposal. SO implemented bans for much less cause.
The familar refrain always runs a kindly old man/woman/etc.
I suppose I could check the OED if you really were curious.

user259867
No, your explanation suffices.

user259867
As for "correct/right", an intermediate measure would be to issue a non-blocking warning when they are used in titles.

I hadn't considered a non-blocking warning. Did they do that for regex questions on SO, or was that just a proposal?

Hmm, half of ELL's question titles are is this grammatically correct?

Isn't that sad?

5:37 AM
It's kinda infuriating.

Oh, I know. That's what provoked me.

Q: Do you see the need for "buzzwords-in-question-titles" edits?

inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.MI see a pretty similar discussion (no, not that similar) here. It's an ancient tradition in chemistry.SE to edit the buzzwords in question titles. (Don't think so? Take a look at these: 1, 2, 3, and 4) I see that usually the inexperienced users come up with something like these for question t...

Now I see if the community lent a hand, we could've cleaned up the mess.

And really, it isn't a good question anyway. They just want to know if it sounds weird to a native speaker. And those are the worst questions, mostly booleans you could ask of anyone.

user259867
@tchrist They do; sql and regex tags have tag-based messages.

user259867
Those aren't title-triggered messages. An example of title-triggered is what you see when typing "you" in question title.

5:41 AM
@NormalHuman Interesting. It's been . . . long time since my gold regex badge. Plus I doubt I ever asked a regex question. :)

@tchrist We have a, to my sorrow, Iranian user who always asks questions like However, as an educated and intelligent native speaker, how do you go for discerning between X & Y?
We've edited the "native request" like, 70 times outta his questions.

What site, ELL?

-1; do you know how bad I feel when I see a crappy question excluding me from the answerer list inheritedly just because I'm not a native speaker? If the comments below suffer a lack of logic, I'm very eager to hear your arguments against them. — inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Jul 28 at 19:50
@tchrist Yes.

We have non-native speakers on ELU who are better than 99.998% of native speakers.

user259867
@dlamblin. Well - it worked for me a few weeks ago. I'm very new to regular expressions and honestly did not know about regex101.com. I started typing, got the message, followed the link and played around until I got my regex to work. So that's one question avoided :) — SiHa Aug 4 at 11:17

5:44 AM
So you would be cutting off a good source if you excluded them.

My point exactly.

@NormalHuman Wow.

Now I'm not a really advanced and fluent learner. I'm just mediocre.
But his questions are not really superior to crap, and checking me outta the answerer's list just annoys me.

user259867
(I was wrong; the regex message is triggered by title, not by the tag.)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Understood.
Our Russian mod is stunningly good at colloquial English.
So we could have a non-blocking title-triggered blurb. That's important to know.

5:52 AM
@tchrist Reg?

Yes.
ELU and ELL are unique as SE sites in that anything somebody doesn't understand when they read it, they figure they can ask about.
Often it is nothing about English and all about them simply not knowing something, or being dim-witted.

Internet use in prisons allows inmates to communicate with the outside. Much like the use of telephones in prisons, the use of the internet under supervision, for various purposes, is approved in 49 U.S. correctional systems and five Canadian provinces. Each of the reporting U.S. systems, except Hawaii, Iowa, Nebraska and Nevada, use computers to employ inmate educational programs, as do all five reporting provinces in Canada. There are 36 reporting U.S. systems to handle inmate health issues via telemedicine. However much like the use of mobile phones in prison, internet access without supervision...
> In the United States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, has put into place the Trust Fund Limited Inmate Computer System (TRULINCS) on February 19, 2009. This allows inmates access to electronic messaging through e-mails. The message must be text only, and must be conducted in a secure manner between inmate and the public. Messages are subject to monitoring.

Q: Please help me to understand LQP flagging

durron597So last night I decided to try an experiment, using SEDE to find low quality answers using some secret sauce, which isn't really relevant to this discussion. Out of 35 flags, I got 19 helpful and 16 declined. Before I want to continue, my metric for following through on flagging is "Would I have...

@durron597 Maybe some mod was reviewing them also at 2 a.m.?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I can tell from the successes that not all of them were handled by the same mod

Then what if those 16 flags were handled by a mod that became angry because of your flag spree?

It wasn't 16 consecutive declined flags either, seemingly random distribution
I mean, that's possible
So I just checked all the helpfuls, it looks like maybe 35% were deleted by LQP review, 50% were deleted by one mod, and the other 15% by another mod
though some of them were NAA flags; I only NAA flagged the ones I was very, very sure would be helpful.

There is a common trend in questions there: the OP says "my X hurts when I do Y", and nobody knows exactly why.

So people who also had pain in X when doing Y (perhaps for a completely different reason) post their answers: I did Z and it helped me.

user259867
They don't necessarily know why Z helped.

@NormalHuman Why am I thinking of putting . . . other things in the place of X & Y?

user259867
The question gets a collection of such suggestions Z1,...., Zn. Later, other people come across the question when searching because their X also hurts when they do Y -- probably for a reason other than OP's.

user259867
They'll be trying all these answers; if not successful, look at other questions mentioning X and Y, and try answers there. This is why SO has so many page loads relative to visits.

Hey I've seen this trend a lot in TeX forums.

So.... should we insist on the answerer being able to explain their suggestion of Z? I don't know. I steer clear of any such questions.

And the answers are usually not helpful at all.

user259867
Most of them aren't, because the possible underlying causes are many.

Yes.

Yes, this is the pattern of user-oriented sites (SU, AU, Android, ...). There, this kind of Q&A is par for the course. On SO they stand out a bit because many questions do have enough information for a definitive answer.
