@NormalHuman I forgot tpu blacklisted users; is there a way to say "you detected this correctly, but give this user some slack"?

@apnorton Ah! So "u" stands for "user," not "update."

user259867
@apnorton There is "tp" but frankly, it's useless. Smokey doesn't need positive reinforcement the way humans do. The useful things to do are (a) blacklist a user; (b) ignore the post, so it's not reported again; (c) report as fp so that it's also removed.

user259867
5:06 PM
I use fp- most of the time, and ignore- if there is still something to do [edit] there but I'm lazy, and hope someone else will.

@NormalHuman Thanks. I had been digging through the code to determine what all the commands did; this will be easier. And, I've just added whoami.

@gunr2171 well I read somewhere on stackoverflow guidelines that it is actually good practice to put solution into the question, so that anyone who will search for the same answer will quickly get what he wants. About swearing: well I never swear in my own native language as a habit, but I always thought that in english f* word is more like some "fastener" for words, all the media don't censure the content, and also we have brainfuck language... But if you are native speaker and you confirm that swearing is really BAD, I swear I won't swear anymore :D — EwanCoder 15 secs ago

waiwai933The new post timeline for moderators (as opposed as to the old obscure question timeline for everyone) is very helpful, but it seems that it sometimes gets a tad over-excited when a mod converts an answer to a comment. A: Opt in "mentor" privilege at 7.5k

Jon EricsonI'd like to float a modified version of this idea as a 30k (10k beta) privilege. Problem statement Stack Exchange sites (and especially Stack Overflow) intimidate new users who might become exceptional contributors if only they got over the hump of asking and answering questions. Meanwhile, top...

looks good! :)

user259867
Apart from not being realistic, what's not to like?

@NormalHuman How isn't it realistic?

user259867
The number of 30K users who want to do this vs the number of people who don't know how to ask.

@JonEricson It seems awesome

6:46 PM
@NormalHuman Oh. We aren't tying to solve all the world's problems you know. ;-)

@ᔕᖺᘎᕊ I like it, although we aren't showing 7.5kers deleted posts

Yes, but if the effect is too localized to be noticeable, the feature's score is around -99.

The part I'm concerned with is making this worthwhile for top users. Hard to know without trying.

Wait.
It must be awesome to have Jon Skeet as your mentor

Sup @ᔕᖺᘎᕊ
User screams and runs away after seeing who his mentor is

I can see it as a "to keep people wanting privs", but honestly are the people who want more privs just because the ones we want as mentors?
Do we have evidence that 30kers are any better at this sort of thing than 10/15kers?
Oh you addressed that

user259867

@NormalHuman What notifications?

6:53 PM
@Undo Honestly, I think this could be expanded down if it works reasonably well with 30k users.
@UnicornsAreVeryVeryYummy I'm guessing upvotes, badges, complimentary comments, etc.

@JonEricson Gets an idea
But it will get downvoted

@ᔕᖺᘎᕊ There is no why data for that post (anymore).

7:33 PM

ahh - because of ignore?
makes sense!

user259867
@ᔕᖺᘎᕊ Because "repeated characters" is a method, not a regex. Only regexes capture data for why.

@NormalHuman oh...
thanks!

user259867
But I can tell why: the code is removed prior to running the method. If you remove all that inline code what's left is ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

@NormalHuman didn't know the code was ignored! I guess it kind of makes sense to do that! Otherwise there would be a lot more false alarms! :)

I just failed an audit in Late Answers, but it's an actual answer that gives an alternative to the accepted one. There's a comment by someone who apparently misread it as a question. Is there any way to get it re-reviewed? stackoverflow.com/review/late-answers/9085229

[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: PLEASE HELP I HAVE ERROR by Jana likes PHP on stackoverflow.com

maybe it could be more explicit about where to apply the CSS, but in context with the other answers it seems perfectly understandable, is that bad enough to reject it?

8:55 PM
@SmokeDetector needs a mentor, obviously. Anyone?

user259867
@SeanVanGorder Well... it got deleted from review, apparently. If you think the deletion was a mistake, perhaps it needs to be undeleted. Then it won't be an audit.

user259867
One would need 20K to vote to undelete an answer, though.

user259867
And it's still not obvious to me that this is indeed an answer....

the accepted answer boils down to one line of CSS, which is one of the two he mentions there, along with his alternative since the first two didn't work for him
it should help anyone who has the same setup as him where the accepted answer doesn't work (assuming he's right, but I don't think correctness is an issue for moderation?)

user259867
The part "didn't work for him" is unclear. Presumable, their HTML and CSS isn't the same as of the OP. So, what we have is a line of CSS that fixes some problem in some unknown code.

user259867
9:04 PM
With zero explanation of why it does what it does, whatever that is.

so if a solution doesn't work for you and you find another solution, you can't tell anyone unless you figure out exactly what situation requires the second solution? what if he had just said "this also works"?
it seems like a simple case of an alternative solution, why not let people see both in case one doesn't work for them?

user259867
Well, by that logic I can add a random line of CSS as an answer to any question, claiming that it works for me.

is that not what the accepted answer did when it was posted? it even says "fixed the issue for me", how would you accept one and not the other?
the accepted answer also offers an alternative solution without saying when it might be necessary

and the rejected answer's alternative also has the advantage of not using a proprietary webkit CSS property

Q: Someone has written 100 thousand (!) answers (graphic design bug)

yo'I was really surprised to see that egreg has written 100570 answers! I thought it's a bit too much, and indeed -- it is. The number of answers blends into the number of questions. In my opinion, this is at least non- aesthetic.

On Meta Stack Exchange or perhaps User Experience, or ...

@Werner that's probably the best place since it doesn't seem to be bad on SO stackoverflow.com/users/22656/jon-skeet

@Dronehinge The obvious choice here would be "K-rounding".
My suggestion would be that it be consistent across the answer and question section.
Those interested in seeing the actual number of questions could hover over the K-number and see the actual displayed in tooltip.

@Werner You should be fine keeping it on that meta
All bug reports get aggregated into a single location, no matter what Meta that are in

A: Editor de texto para respostas não permite certos tipos de caracteres multibyte

OdedAs I mentioned here, we put a block in place due to Chinese spammers acting across the network. I took a look at the numbers, and this was only triggered twice since going up (so probably by the question OP here...). So, I've removed it here.

user259867
Interesting that the filter applied also to comments.

user259867
The spammers weren't really acting across the network as much as going from site to site.

10:33 PM
herd immunity
requires them to not just be blocked on the site they're targeting, but on whatever site they find next
hence the rather overbearing block

user259867
I like herd immunity.

user259867
Can we develop herd immunity to bad questions?
4

@NormalHuman that's called ignore

user259867
Only works if everyone does that. 95% of viewers ignoring, yet others answering is as good as no immunity.

10:55 PM
@NormalHuman 95% is about right for measles. Aim for 100%, get 95% and we'll be fine.

Bad questions are worse than measles.

"Worse" or more transmissible?

I don't know if "transmissible" is the right term, but perhaps "prolific"? I don't think I'd win an argument that it is worse to be around people asking bad questions than to have the measles, but I'm sure I could make a case...

Well, we could disable the Ask Question page...

@JonEricson at this point, I would say that's sensible

user259867

Just add some text to speech JS to it... xkcd.com/481

@JonEricson I'd 100% support shutting down the Math.SE "ask questions" page for the months of September and February to knock down start-of-school spam.

@apnorton Why not spend those months on Community Building or Mythology instead?

@JonEricson CB is too much a event-based QA, people asks about stuff happening or that recently happened, Mythology is the oposite

@Braiam Either way, they are within rounding error of what Math would be like without new questions.

@JonEricson there are just so many math questions, that even if the site doesn't have the 1% left unanswered is ok
when I said "just so many" I meant limited

user259867
@SmokeDetector fp- but I'm open to suggestions on how to avoid false positives for link-at-end better... (such as this one, superuser.com/q/950082 )

@Braiam Huh. Math is the one site on the network that I'm certain will never run out of interesting questions‌.

user259867
I agree with that: there will always be interesting questions in Math.

@JonEricson see, that's a problem with rate. Any interesting question which are generated (that one is dated 1924) at very slow pace, gets buried by the volume of mundane ones that gets generated every second
if you say, that at random for 1 hour no question can be asked, you will notice that people either would try harder to solve their problems, go away, or complain and go away

user259867
No, there are always new interesting questions... on a good day, I can come up with 10 of them before breakfast.

user259867
11:24 PM
Some of them I can answer.

user259867
It's this infinite duplication of the mundane that's kind of annoying.

@Braiam Oh, don't look at recent questions. That's foolish. You gotta let the sorting engine do it's magic.

user259867
Nobody will search for a duplicate. It's far far easier to answer than to search. Often, easier to answer than to read the question.

Just learned about queryxchange.com after doing an image search, looks like they break most of the rules

Anyone knowing both definitions can answer within a second.

user259867
Figuring out why the OP can't answer it themselves would be a lot harder.

user259867
Fortunately, I stopped trying.

@JonEricson kind of remembers me "give them a nail, they take the whole arm"
@NormalHuman because the less-effort-possible policy dictates that is easier try to make another human figure out your problem than putting effort solving it yourself
which may have to do with how easy are stuff achieved nowadays

user259867
Anyway. I'm not really unhappy about questions on Math.
