Today is the 5th birthday of English Language & Usage. Congratulations! A question from the first day of private beta: Is there a correct gender-neutral, singular pronoun ("his" versus "her" versus "their")?

1:22 AM
Hi @apnorton

@NormalHuman Hey! :)
I'm back-ish. I'm trying to write a sort-of smoke detector for Math.SE specifically.

user259867
For detection of low-quality posts?

Yes.
There are a couple of things that should be considered in a Math-specific detector that aren't with Smokey (e.g. lack of MathJax in particular tags).
I'm really doing it for practice with machine learning and web interfacing.
How have things been?

user259867
Slow, for the most part. Too nice out there.

user259867
Also, I pay a bit less attention to Math these days, since Web Apps and SO take a chunk of it.

1:29 AM
Cool. Branching into different sites can be fun.

user259867

What happened to the Smoke Detector? It seems to be offline...

user259867
1 hour ago, by Normal Human
The three who used to host it are absent at the same time: Undo, hichris, Fox. Vacation season...

user259867
I'm running a browser-based detector, which alerts me, without posting automatically.

user259867
(Hence, these reports)

1:33 AM
Ok. I wonder if I can figure out how to run Smokey on my end.
Is there any particular reason someone else doesn't just download the git repo and run it?

user259867
Nobody wants to figure out the login part, it seems. (Meaning chat login)

user259867
At least I know I don't.

that login stuff shouldn't be too complicated famous last words
3

You should just have to create a new account and run the setup script with that login information, but it only works with stack exchange logins, not google or others.

user259867
The new account would have to be able to post in chat: 20 rep or explicit permission.

1:40 AM
^^^ that one

Is it bad that I read this question title as Non-homoerotic? mathoverflow.net/q/212984/74217

user259867
@James You're not the only one with such Freudian slips: mathoverflow.net/search?q=homoemorphic

How does one get explicit permission?

user259867

Of which we have none around.

user259867
Or a mod. Which on Meta means an SE employee.

I'll create a new room until I can get a mod or earn 20 rep.

See here under Owners of this room

Ok. I'll wait before bothering them. I'd hate to get them to go to all that work and not actually have Smokey working.

user259867
1:47 AM
Besides, the current wave is localized to English Language & Usage, so one can just as well watch the list of newest questions.

user259867
So this is the present that ELU gets for its 5th birthday... the site was created 2010-08-06 (UTC)

Well. I created a new room, gave my sockpuppet explicit write access, and it gave me the error "users must have 20 rep to talk."
:\
I'll just find some way of getting 20 rep.

That might be a smokey error,
Do some edits
Or post an answer and two of us will upvote it
Make sure its good though, or I'll downvote it instead.

user259867
1:52 AM
(Strangely, no bots posted an answer there yet.)

Would it be bad to answer this question (since the asker requested a comment bumped to an answer): meta.stackexchange.com/questions/262050/…
(I'd give a bit meatier answer, obviously.)
I can't really think of much to say on @NormalHuman's suggestion. :P

user259867
@apnorton Good idea.

Ok. My well-hidden sockpuppet that only did one thing has now posted an answer.

And now it has 20 rep
And is visible in both rooms.

user259867

Takes a little while to propagate to chat.

Ahhh, caching

user259867
Do you have Smokey set up otherwise?

Almost.
I'm working on getting all dependencies up and running.
(I use python3, generally, but Smokey was written in Python2)

user259867
Ah, assuming it runs...

Yeah, assuming it runs of course

Yeah. Access still hasn't propagated to chat, and I'm getting a cookie problem for using Chatexchange. I'll get it to work, though.
(even if I have to tear it apart to set it up.)
I have chat access!

Smokey's back
@Shog9 this is the 2nd day of Chinese degree mill spam on english.stackexchange. While we all have slightly more flags than yesterday, could you possibly work your regex magic? Please?

Sigh.

yes

3:16 AM
Thankyou!!!!!

@Shog9 Yeah, thanks. Cerb and I had to crash last night and Tavern didn’t have enough ELU flags to keep it at bay very well without us.

user259867
Now that ELU has the block... who's next?

@James 101 reps? Since when?

Since always
I'm trusted cause of my SO rep

user259867
3:18 AM
Aha, Chinese is now blacklisted network-wide, presumably with exception for language sites.

@NormalHuman Like ELU?

Exceptions are: SO, meta.SE, chinese.se, japanese.se, ja.so, and anime.se (and their associated meta sites)

Ok, I'm back for a quick question: would it be better if everyone was a privileged user until tomorrow when I can figure out chat commands, or for no one to be privileged?

@Shog9 what about ELL?

They don’t need Chinese.

user259867
3:20 AM
@apnorton "everyone" sounds good. We'll find out if this is actually an issue. :)

@durron597 does ELL need CJK for some purpose?

ok.

This is what is blacklisted, FWIW:
The Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) scripts share a common background. In the process called Han unification the common (shared) characters were identified, and named "CJK Unified Ideographs". Unicode defines a total of 80,388 CJK Unified Ideographs. The terms ideographs or ideograms may be misleading, since the Chinese script is not strictly a picture writing system. Historically, Vietnam used Chinese ideographs too, so sometimes the abbreviation "CJKV" is used. This system was replaced by the Latin-based Vietnamese alphabet in the 1920s. == CJK Unified Ideographs blocks == === CJK ...

@AFamiliarFace del

@durron597 is that a real question?

@Shog9 I don't know, I don't have an account on ELL

@Shog9 I think it's an example question
but I can't see why it's needed

user259867
Is it feasible to waive the regex blocks for users with 10+ rep? I.e., make it a part of new user restrictions?

3:22 AM
I'm not sure if that's the sort of question that's appropriate on ELL

not tonight
entirely possible these can be blocked with much more care, but... I'm eating right now and then I think I might sleep.

I’m kinda impressed you did that so quick without any new dev support. Guess everything was already in place.

ya

Shog is god, why are you questioning him?

I suppose all the questions that can be answered by google translate are not good questions for ELL... so I've answered my own question.

user259867
3:24 AM
I hear sleeping right after a meal is unhealthy. Refining regex blocks is good for digestion.

yeah, regex really works up an appetite; vicious cycle

I wonder what we'll do if the spammers switch to English...

@Cerberus Learn Klingon

Such a fuss!

funny enough, we have a different system that works pretty well for English but completely fails to be useful for these because they don't have proper word breaks

3:27 AM
How about if all posts by new users would have to be checked for spam by experienced users before being published? Spam only, not quality or topicality.

@AFamiliarFace false

@Shog9 Hmm how does that work? No false positives?

user259867
Yeah, a Pre-Triage review queue before Triage.

@Shog9 Defined "proper word breaks". :) But I know what you mean. You have to use those other fancy Unicode break properties.

@NormalHuman Only for the repless.

3:28 AM
@Cerberus That’d be a lot of work for only a few spammers per real N first-timers. Plus they’d get discouraged.

user259867
A problem with boring review queues with no real impact is that only robo-reviewers are interested enough to review there. And a few maniacs, of course.

@tchrist I don't know, how many are there? The approval shouldn't take long if it's site-wide?

First Posts from New Users Review Queue.
We have that.

Hmph. It doesn't look like I'll figure out how they managed the chat commands tonight. I'll do that tomorrow.

for spam-killing on SO, there's Triage; for everywhere else, there's The Smokey Tavern.

3:30 AM
But they aren’t in Coventry until then.

@NormalHuman But if you only have to glance at the question? Spam is very easy to spot, and it should be about spam only, and only for single-repped users.

user259867
@apnorton No problem, it works fine without chat commands (hichris runs it this way too on occasions). Thanks for not being as lazy as us.

I don’t relish inflicting Triage on everyone. It’s a bit soul-crushing.

@NormalHuman My pleasure. It wasn't too bad, and now I understand a lot more about how this chatbot works.

@tchrist Not as soul crushing as the constant Unsalvagable questions in H&I

3:31 AM
@durron597 Or on any site.

there are sites that have a backlog of First Posts, and those only require one review... Triage would simply not work on most sites.

Flagging down all the spam last night was surely more boring than a spam queue, and many people had to do the same question for it to disappear!

user259867
sites => Android.SE and AU

How does the triage work here?

SO has a special review queue called Triage.
Otherwise Tavern has to catch ’em.

user259867
3:32 AM
@Cerberus Efficiency of scale.

user259867
I like being able to enter review, get 20 posts, and be done.

True...

@NormalHuman But they could be in the chat feed?

@NormalHuman Except CVs on Programmers.SE. Easy to get 20 there every day

@tchrist You don't see most of them; I use custom-made review.
