Today is the 3rd anniversary of the graduation of Mathematica (not to be confused with Mathematics). The site graduated exactly 6 months after the start of the private beta (those were the good times).

I have no beef with Progse - they figured out what they wanted to be (eventually) and made it happen. That's all that's necessary. Additionally, they provide a handy cautionary tale for folks wishing to propose offtopic.stackoverflow.com, which won't scare away the children forever but will at least keep them out of the woods for a few years.

@TinyGiant Looks complicated to me. I'd replace the join of posthistory events by a clause where exists (like in example B here). The meaning is "where exists a closure event with bad reason"... but then it's not necessarily the latest one. Don't know how to pick the latest.

I might have to learn how to use sub-queries better...

It'll just crash the tab... which is probably better, IMO.

@TinyGiant Because you're kinda missing the forest for the trees -- we shouldn't be focused on people answering bad questions, we should be focused on making sure those are either closed & deleted faster, or that they are rejected by the quality filter.

If you don't have a question, you can't answer it.

I think you are missing a camp: 5. Those users who visit the site to solve their problems, and who like to help others. Like 1 they want to have nice content, but their number one criterion is "is it helpful (and civil)"? They don't care much about "is it a good match for SE/constructive" and are frustrated by the deletionism of 1. They dont't care much about 2, answer the questions if it is not much effort, otherwise ignore them. They don't care about 3 either, and find the grudge of 1 against 3 silly. Let them have the rep they can get, if they're having fun and contributing useful content. — jdm Apr 26 '14 at 9:42

Group 5 is very large, and contributes a lot to SO and SE sites in general. (Not much from any particular person, but a lot from the total). Having them discouraged from participating in the way they like would be bad.

That says it much better than I ever could.
