@pizza I didn't want the truth, I wanted what most people would say.
Whois record is NY, so I assume that's Joel's?
With Jeff gone, Joel would be authority... but they have investors. I'm just wondering. Who owns what.
And how do you escalate "past meta"

pizza owns everything!

@HostileFork that's true and what the most of users say:
Dec 17 '14 at 12:33, by Mooseman is eating pizza
This guy is the Hero of Stack Overflow.

@nicael Well, they are just eating popcorn and watching. That's different. I always assume...
I thought this was kind of heroic, but I couldn't save the -6. But, oh, tales of compu-lore will tell the story... like the old man and the sea. Or something:

Q: Simple c++ program gets compilation errors

Danielwhen i'm trying to compile this code, it shows error main.cpp:19:3: error: invalid operands of types 'void' and 'int' to binary 'operator!=' this is the file #include <iostream> #include <cstdio> using namespace std; #define $ DEBUG #define DEBUG 1 #define _(out) do{ std::cout << __FILE__ <<...

@HostileFork Jon Skeet

Come on now. -6? The guy was trying.
And in fact, trying something interesting that puzzled the heck out of me because I had no idea how it could compile.

3:03 PM
@HostileFork I know.
That happens in the C++ domain.

Since when does being in the C++ tag give you a license to be an asshole on the internet?
I think they're just old and angry.

I think so too.

@Unihedro I was just asking more specifically about who can pull the plug on the domain if they felt like it tomorrow, who's in charge at that level? Still Joel?
We both used to work for MS.
Emailed him once about something.

@HostileFork The Board of Directors would be making decisions like liquidation.

@pizza I don't recognize any active usernames there.
Do they operate under aliases?

user259867

I don't see why management team would have to be active on the sites. The head of a university (president, chancellor, or whatever they are called) typically doesn't teach classes.

@HostileFork I've run a local LJ instance before. Wasn't too bad to set up.

@cky Yes, but I tried to modify behavior.

cky
Ah, well, there you go. ;-)

The code capital was disposable, I guess Brad felt he had nothing really and should take the money, but it's like the old saying. "The secret to success is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made." A lot of people had stake in (whatever).livejournal.com and he said "you figure it out".
Being a sellout isn't cool.
Now admittedly, his first level sellout didn't seem bad, but he sold to a competitor who was going to trash the livejournal brands and domains...they wanted it dead...
If he'd thought about it a slight bit more, and not had dollar signs in his eyes, maybe the trust of a bunch of people sharing their lives under links would matter to him.
Instead, people like me had to engineer scrapes and rebuild. But you learn a lesson.

cky
@HostileFork Eh, LJ had many problems (in terms of community management) even before the Six Apart sale.

3:34 PM
@cky If your point is trust no "one", then I agree. FreedomBox and a few people trying, on a shoestring budget... it is frustrating. Which brings me to my irritation (one of many) and especially irritation with the responses here:

Q: Triage All Feature Requests, give an official position and timeline

HostileForkI grumped at @MartijnPieters about several problems. He said talking to me wouldn't be productive (I think lack of productivity can be a property of more than one party's attitude in a conversation...and I'm getting annoyed at having to mirror all my SO posts due to random deletion risk). But h...

By all marks, SE is looking like it is in the wane, like LJ dying.
And I'm sad, just as I was sad when LJ died and the ostensibly "real" players left...
I guess everyone has to move on.

I'm unsure about this, but probably pretty soon. — Stéphane Martin 23 secs ago
I didn't realize that designers don't know when their changes are rolled out :D

@pizza I think it would be inadvisable for the president of a university to never talk to any of the teachers. Does anyone who ever comes here know anyone who could (technically) pull the plug on StackOverflow.com or otherwise change things? e.g. does anyone with real power, or contact with real power, come here?
So far, in my readings, Shog9 seems like the most reasoned person, I don't know what kind of power he has.

3:49 PM
@nicael we can ask a developer for a production build, but generally don't want to ask unless something is mission critical since they occur sporadically throughout the day.

4:00 PM
Honestly, I'm tempted to rollback this. But this time, I won't, and assume I didn't see that answer from the meta post.

@AndrewT. flag/other?

@AndrewT. Why not just roll it back?

I don't know, there's conflict inside my mind. I found that revision from this comment, and I don't want to get into the issue.

@AndrewT. You could just roll it back and see what happens. If things get complicated, mod flag?

eh, @HostileFork, since you're here and it's not nice to discuss folks who are present as if they aren't... what's going on with this?

4:15 PM
@Shog9 As written. I even gave a talk and linked to the mentioned question. I like to trust that things that aren't spam won't be deleted. All the puzzle framings that I've been archiving as I work were deleted wholesale. No one responded. I got mad, and retaliated on that Q--because there had been a momentary outage of my site--someone cached--and I fix it to the best of my ability, I'd like to believe SO held itself to the same standard.

@HostileFork Oh, ok - the old CodeGolf questions then?
Let's figure something out there.

Q: I want to have those voting animations like on Android.SE! Pretty please?

nicaelAndroid.SE quite recently got the redesign which also involved adding those very beautiful voting animtations. I tried to gif them but apparently I'm no expert in this, so that's what I have achieved so far: (For a better representation, you can visit some question and try it) That's oh...

We can either historical-lock them or migrate them to codegolf.stackexchange.com

@Shog9 I'm for that, but note that there has been resistance against wholesale migration.
So I suggested historical lock.

yeah, migration is dodgy - some things are worth migrating, but PPCG has its own rules and practices that have diverged from the old game on SO somewhat.

4:18 PM
I'm okay with not showing up in searches, it's the dead link bit and info loss that bugs me.
If I have links and need the data for the puzzle definition, there's no good reason for the link to not still work.

@HostileFork that's easily fixed. Can you not vandalize your answers though? Kinda sours the whole discussion.

@nicael Yay, +1'd. I'd been thinking about that myself... just because material design is so cool doesn't mean we can't get the shiny new animations, too! :D

@Shog9 Yeah, well can SO please start responding? It increasingly seems like the only way to get anything done here is to talk to you.
2

^^ I sort of have to agree with that, actually. :P

See my triage question also, that chafes me a bit.
We shouldn't have to drag on you for everything.

4:19 PM
@HostileFork mods should be able to handle this. But we're short on mods ATM; election starts Monday. In the meantime, I'll handle it as I see fit and listen to folks complain ;-)

@nicael migrated to meta.android!?

@AndrewT. yeah, wtf?!

@Shog9 Mods are 23 year olds who create kangaroo courts and try to delete things, and are thwarted by a margin: blog.hostilefork.com/code-trolling-deletion-split-string

@AndrewT. I don't get it, wut?
Yes, why this migration?

and back to MSE o_o

4:21 PM
Well that was odd.

@Shog9 I actually hadn't saved a copy of that, and I don't have the rep on codegolf to see the deletion. I could have lost it. This is where I start getting angry.

@HostileFork that's not entirely factual
one sec, I'm writing a script to save myself some time here

@HostileFork hey, I'm not 23

@Shog9 Well, all right, I was griping about one case.

Wait, does that mean I got to vote on @nicael's question twice? :D

4:22 PM
I exaggerate to... um, prove that I can exaggerate. I don't know.

:DD

wtf it's deleted now
What is happening?!?!

and appeared again

@JonEricson, are you responsible? :O

@Shog9 Since you're here, and since you're entertaining things to avoid me going and doing something like writing a big "EVERYONE LEAVE STACKOVERFLOW" ragequit (I've actually been an advocate and brought in dozens of users, kicking and screaming)... can I ask you the above question about who's in charge these days, really?
It seems nebulous.

4:24 PM
@AndrewT. MSE has become sentient!
2

@HostileFork everyone. Everyone has their own responsibilities.
3

@AlexisKing Too early to be moderating. Where's my coffee?

@Shog9 The buck must stop somewhere.

!!/alive?

@AndrewT. ... did I miss something?

4:25 PM
And FWIW, I'm not responding so you don't quit; you should do what you wish to. I'm responding because you deserve a response. I could just roll back your answer and lock it, but that'd be rude.
@HostileFork I think pizza already linked to the management page. In theory, that's the backstop.

@Shog9 In practice?..

@Shog9 Shog, the hero SE deserves, though perhaps currently not the one it needs.

@Shog9 I was very disappointed by the reactions to this. Is my disappointment the end of the line there? Be disappointed?

@Unihedro as I said, everyone has their own responsibilities. You don't let stuff hit the backstop just because you can if it's your responsibility to catch it.

I know asking everyone in the world to play nice and join hands and sing in harmony is asking the moon, and it will never happen, etc. And most of my arguments wind up that way. Sure.
"Nice doesn't scale." I dislike that answer. I will dislike it to my last breath, but... it turns out it's kind of right sometimes.

4:28 PM
@HostileFork Your post is currently sitting at +/- 0, so it's not a lost cause. I do think it might be indicative of the lack of bounties on Meta, though. :/

@AlexisKing I thought you couldn't bounty meta anymore?

@HostileFork Right, that's what I'm referring to.
I think you should be able to, even if it doesn't work exactly the same as on non-metas.

@nicael For what it's worth, I misunderstood that you wanted the animations on other sites. I thought the question was about getting the animation code or something. (And then I screwed up reversing the migration because I'm an idiot.) It might be worth spending a few minutes explaining why you think this makes sense for other sites.

Well... I like the idea of opening more up. Of course I'd like to see the SE code open, to see the process open, and I'd like to see the same with GitHub, and to feel like we-the-world are part of a team...

@JonEricson Because it's purty! :p

4:31 PM
I don't do Facebook, in part because it's not that, and SE is not Facebook but... there's this little sliver of being "kind of like it" in the "no soup for you" way... that it is like it.

@HostileFork SE is a for-profit corporation with a real product beyond the Q&A network.

@HostileFork "the third place"?

@AlexisKing Sounds ominous, I thought the product was job ads?

@HostileFork Yeah, Careers is the product, IIUC.

Well I'm happy to let them make their moneys and wish them all the best with that. I don't mind volunteering to an open-licensed Q&A site that gets their money that way, sounds great. I just get mad about the things I mention.

4:33 PM
I don't want to speak on behalf of the company here, since I really have no idea what their opinion is, but I think they're currently extremely wary about opening things up more to non-moderator users because what the general public wants is often not the right solution.
That's not to say there aren't problems, there are.
It's just a point of ongoing research to figure out what the right way to solve them is.
And that takes time and money.

@AlexisKing I know it's an appeal to emotion here, but here's something I found in a box about myself learning to program: blog.hostilefork.com/osborne-one-basic-fun-history
So to me, when I think of this "top result on google" it's always about thinking about that kid, who could be served so well by good information, and watching the horror unfold that could turn people off forever...

@HostileFork There was a discussion a day or two ago about the latest discussion on the SE podcast.
This is definitely something they are aware of and are trying to fix.
It's just hard when a site gets this big with so much crap.

Well sometimes I feel like I'm fighting a one-man battle here. -6? For trying something that I didn't even know could be made to compile? What justifies that?
-6

I guess it would be nice if they were a little more open about what they were thinking about, getting feedback from people, etc. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea. But it does also take more time that might not really be productive.

@HostileFork Nice is a pipedream. Respectful is not too much to ask though, I think.

@HostileFork I honestly don't know what that was downvoted so heavily. I wouldn't have downvoted it. I can't answer for those who did.

@Shog9 Thank you. Response in kind

or was it... maybe I mixed something....

@JonEricson Ok :) Just a tip: to avoid doubling a post on the original site (where you migrate from), you shouldn't directly migrate from the target site (Android.SE in this case) back, but instead just delete the post on the target site; migration will be rejected, the post would be unlocked on the original site you had migrated from.

4:45 PM
@nicael Yeah. I'm an idiot.

@nicael Or you clear the migration on the original site & nuke it on the migrated site.

A: Why was "Hourglass" deleted?

Shog9This is exactly why we created the Historical Lock: To be clear: most of these are not great examples of questions that should be asked today… But some of them are, quite frankly, brilliant – and losing them entirely just because they aren’t a good fit for our strict Q&A format is wrong. For ...

@HostileFork no problem. In the future, if something important is getting overlooked... Just ping one of us, in chat or via email. We're always around somewhere, but stuff falls through the cracks sometimes - there's an awful lot of you and a tiny few of us.
getting rage-quitty about it all just puts folks' teeth on edge and tends to make things worse

Re: SO election page, those links need to be updated... or maybe the pages haven't been created because there's not yet official announcement about it?

@AndrewT. those links get updated when the election actually starts

@Shog9 Well, you say that, but not everyone can come here and know exactly who to talk to. If "nice" (or "respectful") doesn't scale, then certainly me going through this doesn't scale.

@Shog9 Ok, and I assume the tag will be created on MSO too on that day?

5:01 PM
@HostileFork there's a link on the bottom of every page labeled "contact us" - those all go into a queue and are handled in an order known only to God... But they do get handled.
@AndrewT. sure

@Shog9 But if I've never seen it, or used it, and I'm rather savvy all things considered... think of the childrens.

see, this is just unfair. You can't see the link; every damn kid with a Facebook problem OTOH...

in all seriousness, this sorta thing is documented pretty thoroughly. And if you get it wrong once, no harm done - heck, I put my email address in my profile on every site, just so folks who are totally lost can at least find their way to something.

@JonEricson Oof, and I was trying to exaggerate as much as possible.

@Shog9 I don't just keep bringing up this proposal because I'm trying to be some kind of antagonist, I think it might make a metric difference. (Also, could you say "fixed it" so I can accept that as the answer to this?‌)

(Although having an effect seems to be more of a factor of "Talk to Shog9" than "stay up all night on easter weekend drinking tequila." Magic powers of the latter... probably illusion.. the former, apparently gets things done.)
