9:01 PM
@drachenstern last week I had a dream that one of my company's clients was chasing me around a deserted train station place thing... My psychiatrist tells me to skip the Hot Pockets before bedtime...
(I'm joking about the psychiatrist part ;-)

I can top that: I'm still here right now despite you guys doing your best at giving me reasons to leave.

Wow. OK, You win @PopularDemand!

@TheUnhandledException I need to start going back to a therapist ... probably after the first of the year

I was trying so hard, too! Oh well... back to watching my team perform their rollout I suppose...
@drachenstern Nah, don't take @PopularDemand so seriously... ;-)
Although you wouldn't be the first he's driven totally insane...
@drachenstern I'm joking of course. My mom's a therapist, I have nothing against the profession. :-)

oh I was seeing one for a year before I took this job
moved 300 miles away, makes it hard to do sessions

9:08 PM
I'll say!
Did you find it helpful?
..That's probably a silly question if you said you're wanting to go back...
:-)

Anyone here heard of CompTIA?

I did find it helpful
@PopularDemand I hold an A+ cert
mean anything to ya

@PopularDemand Sounds vaguely familiar...

I've heard of it. Not 100% sure what it is.

@PopularDemand Yeah

9:11 PM
My company gives memberships, but I don't know if it's a legit thing I should pay attention to or just some trade organization. The fact that you've all heard of it is encouraging.

I think that they administer the A+ exams?
Ah, yes

@Tim ahh A+ fond memories

I have a friend who recently went for training sessions and passed the exam, he said that it was a very good experience. :)

yea, they changed the exam a year or two after i took them
back then you still had to know every part and function of a laser printer, DIN pinouts ... serial signalling
on and on
they got rid of most if not all of that stuff

When I took it it was like "point to the power supply in this computer. You pass!"

9:14 PM
hahaha
beta tester huh

@MichaelMrozek hey I could do that!

@rchern Go get certified

hehehe

@rchern Are you really bragging that you can do something Michael Mrozek is capable of?

I'm told they made the CCNA way easier after I took it, so I'll call it even on the tech certification front
@MichaelMrozek is capable of many things, none of them impressive

9:15 PM
@PopularDemand the bar is pretty low...

@MichaelMrozek My point exactly.

I'm not a hardware gal. Software all the way!

Quick linux question: I know I can use tune2fs to change the number of reserved blocks on an ext3 filesystem, but can I use that or something else to see what it's currently set to without changing it?

@Zypher they did? What use is my damned A+ now then?

@rchern Yeah!

9:18 PM
(:

tune2fs --help
/afk

@drachenstern That doesn't tell me how to see the current reserved blocks count...
it's tune2fs -l /dev/device -- for a change, man tune2fs wasn't very clear

Feature complete. At least until I test it.

(:

@TimStone Is that ever not true?

9:26 PM
I'm sure it works. Just rollout.

@drachenstern who cares it's a "Cert for life" :-D

@PopularDemand Well, I figured that until I finished writing all of the pieces that it probably wasn't done. :P
@rchern Ah, in that case. ;)

@TimStone It could have been.

I greatly underestimate the magical abilities of my code then.

That's a shame.

9:28 PM
I blame my lack of self-confidence. :(

Wow, slow day on MSO.

@PopularDemand I've actually been accomplishing things at work today; I blame that

@MichaelMrozek Likewise

I remain surprised by how many people aren't taking today off.

@rchern has no doubt been busy answering Unix questions left and right with her new account there

9:36 PM
@MichaelMrozek I hear she's going to upload an avatar soon.

@TheUnhandledException @MichaelMrozek double likewise, except not MSO so much as having things that needed doing

@MichaelMrozek no doubt indeed.

10:00 PM
New version released with no hiccups. That always feels great
now I can allow myself a few minutes of XMPP code time! dances

Hoorah!

Q: What inexpensive, reliable "pizza boxes" to buy?

dacracotI'm putting up an application cluster on three networks. Each cluster requires five lesser rack mounted machines (pizza boxes), and two greater pizza boxes. Price is an issue. The lesser pizza boxes need to be minimally: dual core CPU, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb disk, dual Giga Net. The greater pizza box...

mmm, pizza.

> two greater pizza boxes

Pizza and server in one!

Next time I get pizza I'm throwing it on the ground and proclaiming "these pizza boxes are not sufficiently great"

10:03 PM
I haven't heard them called pizza boxes in a long time

You can save money on heatsinks by cooking your dinner directly in the rack.

@TimStone yum yum solder flavor!
Then again if you're cooking hot pockets it probably doesn't matter HAR

I've always been partial to Papa John's garlic dipping sauce, but I imagine thermal paste is a good substitute.

Pffft. I always make my own garlic dipping sauce!
Meted butter and garlic power or fresh crushed garlic, it doesn't get much simpler than that, lol

@TheUnhandledException That sounds like effort, which typically doesn't blend well with the laziness that brings about shoving such greasy, fattening (yet delicious..) food into my mouth.

10:05 PM
Anyone hre have 10k tools?

Hey, if it isn't Moshe!
Now with a brand new gravitar!

@TheUnhandledException - Hang on, im on the phone.

@Moshe Where?

...which seems to be lacking a head...
@Moshe I always enter chat when I'm on the phone. Phone is so web 1.0!

I tell people to come to chat instead of calling me.

@TimStone HA! I've been tempted to... ;-)

Actually I wish that were true, I get bored during phone calls and start zoning out by typing in chat instead of listening.
@drachenstern Hahah, I hadn't seen that one, nice. :P

@TimStone Sysadmins who enjoy cooking at work also liked

Q: Is it possible to cook a whole fish in a dishwasher?

AttilaNYCI heard that there is a way to cook a whole fish in a dishwasher - any techniques, tips??

@TimStone I do that too
then make them repeat themselves on the important parts
keeps them on their toes
usually the call ends with them resolving their problem theirself. Which is bad for grammar but good for me.

@PopularDemand Now that one, I've seen. And was amazed that it was a real question. :P

10:13 PM
oh crap! facepalm, facepalm, facepalm, facepalm!!
The front-end of our system still shows the old version number

@drachenstern Hahah, nice.

Don't tell me somebody forgot to change the UI!

@TimStone My current saved draft question on MSO is about that question, actually.

Anyone have 10k tools?

@PopularDemand Oh?
@TheUnhandledException Err, whoops. :P

10:14 PM
@Moshe Yes, if you immediately start a 400-point bounty and award it to me.

@Moshe As @MichaelMrozek on which site?
Better yet @Moshe why not just let us know specifically what's up?
A link would help

I deleted a question.

@Moshe I guess not, what is "10k tools"?

@TimStone Yeah... I suspect that advertising questions like that aren't the best way to attract experts to our betas.

oh, mod-status-whatever-10k
/facepalm

10:15 PM
@TimStone Yeah, I suppose that the new update deleting all users' data would be worse, but this is still very embarrassing

@PopularDemand Hmm, that's actually a good point. I thought that something had gone horribly wrong and that the question had been chosen for advertisement by mistake, heh.

Nov 6 at 23:13, by radp
as opposed to /o\ which is a double facepalm.

Ah ha. But I am actually seeing it's a caching issue...
@PopularDemand HAHA!
OK. Time for a SF question

@TheUnhandledException I guess you want //o\\.

@drachenstern I was under the impression users could see their own deleted questions, but I don't know for sure

10:16 PM
seriously

@MichaelMrozek Nope.

I can't

You can see your own deleted answers on non-deleted questions.

Hmm. Well, 10ks can vote to undelete it, but they need a link (and I'm still not sure which site this is on)

I deleted a question, then got a notification that it's been answered.
SO

10:18 PM
@Moshe Oh. In that case, you need to offer me a 8000-point bounty.

I voted to undelete. I want the 8000 rep too though

I'm a bit cheaper at just over 5K

@MichaelMrozek Really? That was a "list of X" question, if I recall correctly.

@PopularDemand I didn't even read it; he self-deleted and wants it undeleted, so I voted for it
@Moshe If you just want the answer:
It seems broken that people can self-delete but then not self-undelete. I always thought they could

@MichaelMrozek - Thanks.

10:27 PM
@Moshe Why did you delete it?

Q: Are the hottest questions necessarily the right ones to feature?

Popular DemandAre the hottest questions necessarily the right ones to feature? I've seen the following three questions, and one or two more like them, in sidebar ads: Why can you turn clothing right-side out? (Math) Is it possible to cook a whole fish in a dishwasher? (Cooking) How can I tell if a corpse is s...

10:44 PM
Hm, now I'll have to come up with coherent thoughts to answer. :P

@TheUnhandledException - I thought it was unanswered.
@TheUnhandledException - Just possibly sold an Android/iOS app for a decent price.

@MichaelMrozek Um, answers definitely can get self-undeleted

@Moshe That's why you deleted it? I think I've only ever deleted one question and I don't even remember why, maybe I found it was a dupe

@radp Well, somebody is lying to me then

It may be hard to find back your answer

10:46 PM
I don't think deleting a question because it's unanswered is a good thing to do

@TheUnhandledException - I think it was also downvoted, but then I changed the question. So essentially, I got a downvote on a different question and no answers. I figured, whatever, I'll reask it later.

but I've definitely one-click undeleted answers Jeff removed from the sandbox

@radp I was talking about questions in that message

Maybe it's just questions you can't undelete

I actually commented that it was too easy to undelete the answer.

10:47 PM
I know I have undeleted answers

@TheUnhandledException - My ride's leaving.
ttyl

You can definitely undelete your own answers. I thought you could for questions too, but I'm told you can't see them unless you have 10k

@radp nice work on the app!
take care @Moshe

@TheUnhandledException - Thanks, you too.

@radp If you have 10k; if you don't you can't do anything, even if it's your post
And it's 3 votes

10:49 PM
Yeah, I confused it with reopening.

@radp Answers yes, questions no.
@Moshe I downvoted it because, no matter how much you modify it, it's not an appropriate SO question.
Argh, too late.

@radp Hahahahah
Nice
Also, I really need to get enough done so I feel like I have time to start playing.

Heh
That module I released version 1.2.2 of? Yeah... we just released 1.2.3
probably the shortest duration between two versions evar

Besides the 121 version jump that JS formatting library made ;)
At least you caught it :)

10:57 PM
haha, that was a chat typo
but yes, at least I caught the issue and not a customer :-)

I remember things that happen in chat in special ways, just ask @rchern

And hey, version 1.2.3 sounds so much cooler than version 1.2.2 anyway...

This is true. :P

@TimStone She's been quiet recently. If she's not careful she'll lose her #1 chat seat to @radp or me

@TheUnhandledException Now 1.2.2 is a collector's edition!

10:58 PM
@PopularDemand Ahahahahaah!!!
That's classic
"Version 1.2.2, the extremely rare version where search returns too many results!"

@TheUnhandledException Hahah. I've moved up to the middle of the first page, it seems.

You know the box in front of a carwash where you press the button for "economy," "standard" or "deluxe"? What's that called?

It has a name?

@PopularDemand Nickel and dime.

11:00 PM
@TimStone You'll be on the second row in no time. A lot of the users are old gaming users who are now just unmoving milestones waiting to be passed by

I'm looking for a photo to illustrate what I mean with an SO example. It's not the end of the world if I can't find one.

@PopularDemand Um, "the selection buttons on the front of a carwash"?
;-)

@TheUnhandledException Very nice, but not good for the question I'm trying to ask.

?
You specifically want "Economy", "standard", "deluxe"?

11:05 PM
@TheUnhandledException No, I'm looking for something more like your first attempt but with four buttons, labeled "economy," "regular," and "premium" or similar.
Here, I submitted the question, you'll see what I mean. (I hope.)

Q: Can a Wicket checkbox be dynamically changed if it's set to "required"?

Lord TorgamusIs it possible to dynamically/AJAX-ishly change a Wicket checkbox if it's being validated with setRequired(true);? Here's a simple, if contrived, example to show what I mean: Drive-through carwashes at gas stations usually often three or four levels of service. Each one includes everything provi...

@Pop There's a comic of you illustrating what you mean with a SO example. I hope it's good enough.

Heh, I could only find one on a stockphoto site.

Yes, Tim, another Wicket question.

Hoorah ;)

@TimStone Whoa, that's actually really good.

11:07 PM
Awesome @Tim
Your google-fu exceeds mine

@radp No, not at all. I'll never ask a question that gets 840 upvotes.

Closest I could come has no buttons:

@PopularDemand You didn't specify the question was yours.

@radp ...what're you eating for lunch?

11:11 PM
@PopularDemand tomorrow? pasta.
It was pasta today too, though.

May I recommend something with bones?

@PopularDemand Today's pasta was with salmon, doesn't that count?

That sounds good, why didn't you share it with us? :(

@TimStone Pasta over IP doesn't work well
Also I overcooked the pasta for my taste.

<retracted based on new information>

11:13 PM
@radp I was trying to play along with the "I hope you all choke on your lunches," but whatever. That does sound good.

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, I usually read the proposed cooking time and take one minute off.
nite

@radp Catch you later!

@PopularDemand The more Wicket questions I see, the happier I am that we opted not to use it, heh.
G'night @radp

that was interesting @Tim

Did you just make 20 edits? :P

11:17 PM
@TimStone Ow, my career!

@TimStone I'm on a 14.4k modem

@TheUnhandledException I just wanted to make sure that something crazy wasn't going on, heheh.

today I should've shaved two :(
poor @the, you have my sympathy

@TimStone Actually now that I look at your edit history, the crazyness was on my end. I saw "@ra", then "@rad", then "@radp"

@PopularDemand Hey, if it works for you. :P

@TheUnhandledException Oh, hahah. Yeah, originally I missed the tab key, but then went back and added in the extra two characters.
Nice. :P

I'm too fat to get through fast? :(

doesn't have the same effect, but has it's own unique flavor :-)

@TimStone It does. I can't imagine having to muck around with separate XML files or deal with logic in the HTML or deal with layout in the Java.
@radp Maybe a little less butter on the pasta next time.

@TimStone wonders what this is referring to

11:20 PM
@PopularDemand Yeah, that was why we didn't go with Spring either. I'd rather write actual code than massive configurations.

It was reqd for the salmon :(

Though it's possible that I'm misinformed about Spring. It did seem that way from a glance.
@rchern Ah, the screenshot from yesterday.

Oh.
Sorry, I thought you said you remembered things in special ways. I didn't think it said you fabricate lies.
q:

Hahahah. :P

OK, version 1.2.3 rolled out and nobody noticed the change from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3 besides my boss
whew

11:25 PM
I noticed.
I took screenshots too.

@rchern Oh? What's your domain again?

She lies, she Photoshopped them!

rchern sees all! rchern knows all!

@TimStone nah, that's all you. (;

11:26 PM
q:

They're not backwards! You are!

wait
oh
my
gosh
where's the cheapest place to buy a domain name????

There isn't.
Domain names are expensive.
Really expensive.

Hm, I actually need to pick up a new domain name.

11:28 PM
@rchern Photoshop! Is that how you get those smilies to look like they're reversed from the usual orientation? Oh, I finally get it!

I don't know what you're talking about. Reversed smilies?

anyone have a godaddy coupon code???

@TheUnhandledException, don't you have bugs to fix? Version to release? >_<

@rchern Version has been released! You said so yourself! ;-)

No, but I do have a Rackspace cloud server idling...I should really do something about that.

11:33 PM
another version?

@TheUnhandledException You're welcome to find a good way to test my code ;)

...or ya know, anything else that you should be doing.
lol

Haha. I'm not actually spending $10 just to redirect backwardsmile.com to your profile ;-)

I would, but even I consider it a bit over the top. :P

oy

11:37 PM
Anyone hear about the safetyschool.org prank circa 2000?

No clue, fill me in.

Some harvard students purchased safetyschool.org and redirected it to yale.edu

lol

The joke being, Harvard students apply to Yale as a safety school :-)

Ah ha, nice :P

11:38 PM
They then went to a Yale v. Harvard football game and bared their painted chests, spelling out "safetyschool.org"

@TheUnhandledException Child's play. Have you ever heard of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, my friend?

@PopularDemand I sure have. Used to take robotics courses there
they have great pranks
Like the pumpkin on the spire? :-D
I <3 MIT

I remember being disappointed by my M.I.T. rejection, but then realized that not having to deal with the stress of competition wasn't so terrible. Or at least that's how I rationalized it to my self at the time. goes to sulk in a corner

11:42 PM
@TimStone Yeah I cound never have survived the stress of being an MIT student
but my grades were nowhere near good enough

And that's only the ones about the Harvard-Yale game.
@TimStone Wait, you didn't get into MIT? Flagged for mod attention as "not qualified for MSO chat."

@TheUnhandledException My interviewer gave me good reviews, so I got a little complacent with most of my other applications. Yet another lesson about being too cocky. :P
@PopularDemand bans self

@TimStone I handled it by hating MIT forever

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I shook my fist at their buildings the last time I was in Boston.

The main reason I donate to my alma mater is so I can think "that's right MIT -- this money could be going to you"

11:47 PM
(I'm kidding; I didn't go to MIT either.)

Ah well, things are going pretty well at the moment, so I suppose missing out on MIT wasn't so terrible either way. :P

@TimStone Yeah. Besides, it's not like you missed out on CalTech.

Hahah

Well, @rchern, you lucked out this time!

When I was in high school, the local paper's education reporter said this:
"Well, CalTech and MIT are certainly both the gold standard. But if I had to choose, I'd give the edge to CalTech; Pasadena has better milkshakes."

11:57 PM
Hah, I'm actually not a huge West Coast fan. From what I've seen of it, I actually really like Boston...but now, time to eat.

@TimStone I was born in the Boston area. I love it there :-)
anyway, have a good meal!
