Tag synonym suggestion for SO: [dropdown] and [dropdownlist]
(Nobody's in the SO Tavern.)

Chat.SO → Chat.SE
You know you want to!

@radp No, SO's too big, someone said. waffles, I think.
I can't access Chat.SE.

@PopularDemand Still there's no one on Chat.SO
@PopularDemand Yeah, the HTML5 login thing stinks when it means we lose people.
Still if everything went the chat.SE way, I guess the many modifications required for SE.com to allow normal login to chat.SE would actually take plane.
Nite.

G'night

you still can't get to chat.se?

12:04 AM
@rchern No. It's not like I've been trying to get in continuously, though.
I gave it a shot that first day with balpha and didn't bother trying again.

@rchern They must have accidentally used his ID instead of yours

Probably won't, until/unless this chat gets closed.

(;

What with the hard-coded user blocks and all.
;)

@PopularDemand what happens?

12:05 AM
@rchern Tells me to get a more modern browser.
(I'm using FF 3.6.12.)
balpha said it had to do with DOM storage, I believe, but even after I enabled that, no dice.

):
seems to work with 3.6.10

Nothing exciting goes on over there anyway, you aren't really missing out :P

does SO's global login work for you?

@TimStone Uh, I'm there

@rchern Yeah, it does, that's the odd thing.
@MichaelMrozek He knows.
And so do I; why do you think I'm not trying to get in?

12:09 AM
@Marc was fixing something with a cookie that was preventing me from being able to get in on my iPhone. maybe it'll help you?

@MichaelMrozek To move our messages from Chat Feedback to The SE Tavern, yes...exciting stuff.

@rchern 'kay, I'll give it another shot.

not sure if it's been completed yet. testing now though (:

I'd test, but it's liked me from the beginning on whatever device I use, so. :P

"Please log in to any StackExchange site first."

12:11 AM
I'd do a Log Out From Everywhere and then login again.

@rchern Every other time I come to the Tavern, someone tries to get me to leave. Fine.

I'd kick it in the shins. @rchern's suggestion seems more helpful though.

still doesn't work on my iphone, change to SE must not've happened yet

I wonder why it only doesn't work for you, though.

Hm, works now. Not sure why.

12:16 AM
@PopularDemand, it's been said in the past that it doesn't matte that you're logged in, it matters when you logged in

@rchern When I was working on it with balpha, he had me global logout, so if you're thinking that I had really old credentials, not the case.

Does anyone else think the idea of a cat-related stackexchange is hilarious?

"Why is Mr. Whiskers doing X?" "Shrug, cats are weird"
"How can I train Fluffy to X?" "LOL, have you ever *met* a cat?"

@PopularDemand weird

The SE chat is just evil, would be the message to take away from this.

12:29 AM
Okay, that's enough work for one day. Time to go home. See you.

@PopularDemand See ya

Q: php: accessing a value from a returned associative array

mistabellI have a function getStatus() that returns an associative array. Right now I'm accessing a value with two commands: $a = $user->getStatus(); $a = $a['keyName']; doSomething($a); Is there a way to rephrase that into one command like: doSomething($user->getStatus()['keyName']);

Oh PHP...
doSomething(array_pop(array_intersect_key($user->getStatus(), array('keyName' => ''))));
immediately burns that code

12:58 AM
@PopularDemand I was having that same problem on my iPhone earlier today. Kept logging out and then in but couldn't get into chat, after a while it just started acting right

what time zone are you in? GMT-72?
I vote for GMT -72

I was going to say we should reenact the last hour of chat in here in honor of the bonus hour, but it looks like that wouldn't be very difficult

@MichaelMrozek You've already ruined it!

@MichaelMrozek You can do that by saying nothing for the next hour :P

The lack of catastrophic DST-related chat failure is boring.

@TimStone What is this Dyalight Saving thing anyway? -- With love from the equator

Hahah :P
@YiJiang It's a special time, when our fear of the upcoming work week grows so great that we have a country-wide panic attack and add an extra hour to the weekend to delay the inevitable just that much longer.

Re login problems (iPhone) note that the login doesn't have to be to SE; try logging in to SO, or your.stackexchange.com - I'm equally intrigued as to why this appears so intermittent (it works fine for me, so [status-no-repro] for me)

Congrats @codinghorror 100,000 points on http://meta.stackoverflow.com somebody needs to send you a unicorn cake!

A: Handling "Problematic" Stack Overflow participants

MehrdadResponse to balpha's answer: The more the better. Each additional question on SO adds to the knowledge base (if the question gets useful answers) or just sits there to be forgotten—with 48 gigs of memory in your DB server, the latter shouldn't be much of a problem. Real crap can be deleted, a...

The signature box says "Fearless Spammer", yet revision records only two revisions, and none by this user

I'm not sure it was necessary to go block poor users

The guy's name must've changed. I remember that CW question's user title doesn't update until the next edit

Especially when you go block IPs.
My Uni proxy serves 20k people.
If one of them misbehaves, all the others get blocked
and since we're all Italians, our English will tend to be subpar.

Oh god... The Simpsons is trying to retell The Fountainhead
@radp It's Wikipedia's policy, which arguably has one of the most open editing, yet still productive system for content management there is on the internet today

@YiJiang It's Wikipedia's policy for people who circumvent account blocking, I'm sure

> If the banned editor creates sock puppet accounts to evade the ban, these usually will be blocked as well. When evasion is a problem, the IP address of a banned editor who edits from a static IP address may also be blocked for the duration of the ban. If a banned editor evades the ban from a range of addresses, short-term IP blocks may be used. Typically, these last 24 hours.
A Wikipedia ban is a formal revocation of editing privileges on one or more Wikipedia pages, usually in the scope of an article ban or a topic ban, though it may extend to the entire project. A ban may be temporary or permanent. The standard Wikipedia invitation to "edit this page" does not apply to banned editors. Editors are typically banned as an outcome of the process. Banning should not be confused with , which is a technical mechanism used to prevent an account or IP address from editing Wikipedia. While blocks are one mechanism used to enforce bans, they are most often used to...

Go figure, after 1k messages and 8 hours of complaining, a result was obtained.
Population: all the people who chatted about it in the first place.

@radp On the upside, the chatrooms finally see some activity

@radp That single question created a room with activity close to what this room gets on average

@YiJiang I feel strongly about it :)

And that's twice the activity normally seen on Bridge

@YiJiang To be honest "1k messages in 8 hours" is without counting the night in the middle.

@PopularDemand Clearly Jeff and I have different definitions of what constitutes a valid sentence. :P

s/-/:/ would be enough for me

Yeah, I think I could live with that too.
I agree that there's likely not a form that could be perfect for whatever you throw at it, but that dash...ugh, heh.

if you get more than one priv at once what's the formatting there?

"Congrats! You sure gain a lot of reps. The close police has been notified."

not sure that pic is valid, seems the formatting changed since so not sure how it affects multiple privs

Q: Rename unix.SE to opensource.SE

kolobosUnix.SE doesn't seem very popular, and there are many reasons for it. But there is another thing that can be improved, and that's the name. I believe that for many (especially young) people, "Unix" is something that is old and not used anymore. If you look at Ubuntu, they position it as an alter...

Alonso wakes up 60 laps late :/

Hm?

Formula 1, not that I'd expect any of you to follow it.

I actually used to follow it, but the last several years I've been neglectful of it and the various other sports I used to watch.

Pity, you've missed a terrific year.
Easily the most interesting championship in the last few years', admittedly that isn't saying much.

Hm, it's definitely one of the sports I find more watchable, maybe I should get back into it.

5:39 PM
There's only one race left this year, however.
Abu Dhabi.
Oh, and pretty much everything changed in the last seven years :)

@radp Ah yeah, I figured as much.

(Spoiler alert: no more refuelling during the race.)

My dad was at the Shanghai circuit about a year ago, he said it was really impressive. I've yet to go to one myself though.
@radp It starts up again in early Spring right, sometime in March or April? I'll have to see if there's adequate coverage on TV here.
