@balpha AWESOME

yeah, isn't it?

It is
I do far less photography than I used to, used to be a big hobby of mine
I have so little free time these days :-(

@balpha Gah.

I like the photo of the day on the home page :-)
@PopularDemand Not a fan?
Oh
@TheUnhandledException I don't love it on every page...

8:12 PM
@TheUnhandledException No. It breaks the mental layout map I have for SE sites.
And I think the title is unattractive, but that's purely a matter of taste.

@PopularDemand Yeah, as I delve deeper, I see what you mean
Yeah I'm not loving the top nav...

Also not a huge fan of the photo-of-the-week rules:
0
Q: Weekly Featured Image for Nov. 4, 2010

chills42This is the place to submit and vote on photos for the week of Nov 4. Rules: Limit one photo per person per week. Limit one submission per photo (so don't repost from other weeks). Keep all images appropriate, as we do not wish to offend any of our users. Images should be 375 x 210 px or they ...

I like it on the Home page but nowhere else, too distracting

Well, really just this one: "Limit one submission per photo (so don't repost from other weeks)."

@PopularDemand Yeah, that's not fair

8:16 PM
I keep thinking we should have some sort of JinTracker, but I have no idea how such a thing would be implemented.

what if on a given week, I have a great photo, but you have one that's greater. Mine shouldn't be forever excluded just because yours was better on that week

@TheUnhandledException You: preacher; me: choir.

Very true
I see it more of me supporting your ideas ;-)

I guess I'm not thinking of a JinTracker really, it's a NewStackExchangeSiteDesignsTracker.
2
Stats on how many people like a given design, the average number of designs liked and disliked....
Bueller?

LOL
Yes, I agree (again)
Sorry, pesky boss asking me to do work ;-)

8:24 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yeah, if we weren't so busy I'd have taken today off too, and sat at home drinking more Emergen-C and chicken soup.

Yeah, you have that deadline tomorrow huh?

@TheUnhandledException Yeah. It's not even a particularly difficult thing, but lots of us have never worked together before. You know how it is.

@PopularDemand That I do
Pesky designers. "This is 2px too tall". I'll give you two pixels...
I jest, but in reality my design skills suck, so I'm lucky to have such a great design team. I remind myself their nitpicks are a good thing.
And my dislike of them must somehow be tied to my having terrible design skills :-)

We call that "jealousy."

8:44 PM
LOL. I suppose so :-)

+1 for JinTracker :)

Here's the man himself

Hi Jin, you turned up just at the right time :) +1 for photography, very snazzy

Jin
it was the toughest theme to implement.. and that meta theme.. sigh
i have't slept

I like it too @Jin, except I'm not in love with the photo of the week/top nav on every page

Jin
8:51 PM
why do i make my life difficult? lol

I like it on the home page, but...

what was it you said about bringing on the pain the other day @Jin? (;

Jin
@TheUnhandledException it's definitely a big change. i talked to some mods on the photo site and they think it'd be ok

@TheUnhandledException, I agree except that... in a way every page is the home page, if you're following a link from google

Jin
because a lot of artistic sites do have a fat header(especially if they have ad banner on top)
normally i wouldn't do this type of design, but i think it's OK for a photographer's site

8:52 PM
@Benjol Point taken...
@Jin Another good point

@Jin, no one has asked for the 'ask a question' to be more prominent yet?

Jin
no. i think that's a myth

40 mins ago, by Popular Demand
@TheUnhandledException No. It breaks the mental layout map I have for SE sites.

(Just thinking out loud, I'm not likely to be a regular user there)

Jin
yeah for this one yes. but it really won't take long to get used to
several other site navigation already deviated from SO's and each other's
what i won't change though, is the body layout.
that's why they all look the same. because that's where the branding element. oh and that "Stackexchange" badge on the top bar..

8:54 PM
@Jin Good :-)

I think I'm quite in favour of pushing the boundaries like this, and allowing different sites to take on their own personalities. In the long term, if this SE thing really snowballs, I expect the majority of users will only be on 1 site anyway.

@Benjol I hope they'll be on more than one!

The stackexchange multicollider drop down is almost invisible...

Oh, so it is

I'm surprised to see so much color on a meta. And the lack of a photo of the week.

8:57 PM
And the contrast of the other links up there is a bit too low, I think
@PopularDemand be cool if the photo was the parent photo negative:)

@Benjol I figured B&W version of the parent, but okay.
There must be some sort of backend image processing that could take care of that automatically.
Even if nobody wants to write that, it wouldn't be difficult to run the winning photo through a Photoshop filter once a week.

I'm sorely tempted to register just so I can have a shot at posting a weekly photo :)
Oh, it's locked..

That's an interesting gaming issue.
What is the best time for posting a photo to the weekly contest?
Too early, and someone might get a better one in, locking your photo out forever.
Too late, and you won't have enough time to get the upvotes you need.

Weird, meta flair broken on associated accounts for me (I did register)

Looks alright to me.

9:05 PM

Ok, I refreshed and ok - I got a "Not Found" first time

@PopularDemand Yeah, I don't like that at all

@MichaelMrozek much better
anyway, I like the Photography design. It's bold and unstackexchangish.

@radp Is that really a good thing, now that we're going for a consistent "for-dummies"-esque approach?

Yeah, where's the domain name? ;-)

9:11 PM
@PopularDemand I'm commenting on that

night everyone, enough excitement for today. You can go and vote up my photo if you want :)

@Benjol Night!

@TheUnhandledException I'll make no mystery I'll make regular side remarks on AskUbuntu's amount of chat activity :P

@radp I haven't even checked out their chat yet :-)
What's the activity like?

@TheUnhandledException Nowhere near Gaming's backlog of 60k messages at any rate.

9:18 PM
Gaming's is crazy :-)

okay, 10k messages is roughly twice or thrice as much as I'd expected.
@TheUnhandledException This chat room has 65k messages.
Who's crazy now? :P

@radp Well, clearly, this room is the crazyiest
It is "The Tavern of Insanity", after all...
@radp Of those 65k, 10% are mine, LOL
In fact someone should buy me a beer for being the most talkative here...
;-)

Jin
@radp what is "lomd pf?"

@Jin Probably "kind of" when one of my two hands are misplaced
Dangers of touch typing.

Jin
@radp i googled, and i all found was "Legions of Mega Death"

9:28 PM
@Jin I was trying to think of a clever response but came up short

Jin
@TheUnhandledException TWSS

@TheUnhandledException when in doubt go with the conspiracy theory
I totally tricked @Jin in writing that here. Now my botnet has been activated.
All your chat are belong to us, you have no time to emote make your time.

Hooray, postponed deadline.

/me cheers
I love those ;-)
Well, normally

9:39 PM
In what I'm led to believe is a rare occurrence, we looked at what we had, decided that it wasn't yet completed to our standards, and opted to not try and show it off anyway. ;)

@TimStone "In what I'm led to believe is a rare occurrence" simply makes me think "wow, what they have must really suck."

@PopularDemand ahahahaha

@PopularDemand Hahahah, I meant in comparison to other companies. We don't do half-assed here. :P

@TimStone Good save.

@PopularDemand that's what I thought (;

9:43 PM
If I let that happen, I'd have to resign, heh.

Q: What if I think my question would be better on a different SO/SE site?

SchnappleThis morning I created a question on SO about TWAIN and the Mac and got zero responses. Looking at it again, I'm not sure if it would be a better fit for Super User or Programmers SE... or if it's just not a question that's going to get answered. So, questions: Is there any way I can draw att...

I'm not 100% sure what action should be taken, but I think the guy deserves some attention.

Hmm

@PopularDemand It seems like you two already covered it; he should either delete it and repost, or flag it for mod attention. The former is necessary if he wants to move to programmers, there's nothing anybody can do about migrating it there yet

Ugh, I don't know what the hell we're using for an editor on this website, but it makes me long for WMD, heh.
Ah, TinyMCE

@TimStone Not a fan?

9:50 PM
It's nice to see the initialism "WMD" refer to something not-horrible.

HAHA, what does it mean in this context?

@TheUnhandledException Web MarkDown

I thought it meant he wanted to destroy TinyMCE very violently
@PopularDemand Ah, ok
Same as Markdown on SOFUMPSESEWTF...?

@TheUnhandledException Buh?

(SOFUM doesn't cover all bases anymore...)

9:52 PM
@TheUnhandledException Oh, no, hahah. I'm not thrilled with it (or at least how it's configured here), but after writing enough answers on SO you get used to the predictability of the system...and this...is messy.

@PopularDemand Same as Markdown on StackExchange sites?

Stack Exchange Monolith!

@TimStone Ah, I know how you feel re: getting used to answering on SO
We use TinyMCE a lot, so if I can be of any help let me know. I think it's extremely well done

It's possible it's more of an issue with the theme on this site. Essentially you don't get what you see in the editor on the page itself, heh.

@TimStone Editor probably doesn't include stylesheets from the main site
Use...

9:55 PM
blames Drupal

tinyMCE.Init({ /* ... */ content_css: "/path/to/stylesheet.css,/path/to/other.css", });
that is to say, the content_css parameter passed to TinyMCE's init function

@TimStone ThusSpakeZarathustra.SE time?

When correctly configured, TinyMCE can almost perfectly match the published site

@TheUnhandledException Ah, cool, thanks. I think I need to fix the site's CSS itself first, and then once I get that taken care of I'll fix up TinyMCE, heh.

No problem. There's a ton of config options for TinyMCE, feel free to ask me (or the manual) for help
body_class is always fun. Puts a CSS classname on the <body> tag of the content inside the editor. Allows you to specifically make the editor look different by creating CSS rules for body.whatever blah

10:02 PM
Awesome. I'm assuming that the editor came as part of the forum module (something else that bothers me greatly right now), so I suspect someone just installed it with little to no configuration whatsoever, heh. :P

@TimStone Without much config, TinyMCE's default won't be very fitting :-)

It actually looks much better in TinyMCE than on the site itself, heheh...so there's work to be done. ;)

HAHA

In what I'm led to believe is a rare occurrence, we looked at what we had, decided that it wasn't yet completed to our standards, and opted to not try and show it off anyway. ;)
Makes more sense now :-)

I was worried someone would draw that conclusion. :P

I know I've had projects like that! :-/

10:08 PM
The site is actually the community for an open source project, so currently there's no one to actively maintain the site itself.

Yeah. It'll get fixed, once there aren't other things to do as far as the actual project or other work-related stuff goes, heh.
Or once there's someone who doesn't have those other responsibilities.

What's up today?
Figuratively, not literally.

@MichaelMyers Busy day for me, work work wok, gotta catch up :-)
Hopefully I can finish work early for the day so I can commit something for XMPP, but, doesn't look likely at the moment

@MichaelMyers Not much on my end. There hasn't even been anything to /blame Marc or balpha on today!

10:13 PM
@TimStone Sad, I know :-)

Jin
whoa joel tweeted about me

I think we've even gone without a @rchern smiley joke...it's clearly been a very quiet day.
3

Jin
RTed rather.

@Jin Nice. :)

I'll blame them because there's no way to log on to chat.SE with IE7. That good enough?

10:15 PM
IE7? Who cares about IE7.
I care about Opera Mobile.

@Jin Link or it didn't happen ;-)

THIS IS ALL AN ELABORATE PLOY TO GET ME OFF THE CHAT!

Jin
@radp i care about playstation phone

Don't make me come over there.

Hahah

10:15 PM
What's up today literally? Is it something out of the ordinary?

@Jin Android is fine, the inbuilt browser does support chat.SE login.

@TimStone oy.

Why are you trying to prevent us from thinking about what's above us? What's your game, eh?

@rchern She awakens! (-:

Oh, now that I don't have to cram for a deadline, I don't have to feel bad about fixing hg-git and working on the userscript some more, success!

10:16 PM
(:

Actually, I suppose that I can postpone fixing hg-git too, since the problem only happens when there are no new changes to pull.

@rchern I say, Miss rchern, pardon me, but it seems that the directionality of your textual indication of amusement is reversed from the usual orientation.

she's differently emoted.

@TimStone Better?

I thought that was clear by now.

10:19 PM
heh.

@radp Just trying to help Tim adjust.

@PopularDemand Nah, everything kind of pales in comparison after this yesterday:

why does your smiley have 2 goatees, and where are the eyes?

@rchern Oh, good luck!

@rchern Fingers crossed

10:22 PM
company's annual conference is tomorrow and they'll be doing a demo on it. kinda important it works...
and of course they've been having me make changes all afternoon

That's the worst
I have faith it will work though :-)
I mean you did test it fiiiiiiirst, riiight? ;-)

Hm, in that case the usual /blame victims simply won't do...But no, I'm sure it'll be fine.

well, our help desk is the testers. and considering they were finding stuff today that if they had actually tested, would have been found much much earlier...
yeah, i'm nervous. heh.

Oh
Well, I wish you good luck then :-)

hehe

10:32 PM
@TheUnhandledException Perhaps even $.luck(), since using jQuery increases the odds of success even more.

@TimStone Good point!
I hate being stuck trying to fix a final bug before being able to quit for the evening
Very frustrating

:(
What's misbehaving?

Ah, well there's your problem. ;)

Tell me about it :-)
I have code that works great in FireFox, does nothing but a blank window in IE. No clues as to why

10:43 PM
JavaScript I take it?

Yup. Supposed to make an "additional images" popup window
Trying to boot a Windows7 machine to use the debugger
TIMMAH!!

IE isn't even throwing those annoying errors? Heh

(I name my VMs after South Park characters. Timmy is the Windows 7 machine :-)

Hahah
Brilliant

@TimStone No! That would have given me a clue as to the issue

10:46 PM
Ah, ninja error...good stuff.

@TimStone Good for you maybe. Bad for me :-)

Thankfully I have two hands, so now I've crossed my fingers for both you and @rchern. Typing may become a problem, though.

HAHA, thanks :-)

hmm, not too bad. just one page that is showing the content to regular users instead of the "coming soon" notice. (page is only available to admin-y people right now and lowly users should see a coming soon notice)

Ah, nothing major then. :)

Did you figure out your IE problem? :P

11:12 PM
i can handle that.
my IE problem?

@TimStone It's not IE. it's my code :-(

oh

So I gathered (:

@TheUnhandledException You didn't use enough jQuery?

11:14 PM
@TimStone Could be it -- I'm using zero, actually
(This is a Prototype.js site)
winBody.down('div#thumbnails') is undefined...

Ah ha. IE gets cranky when it doesn't get its two scoopfuls of rais...err, jQuery.
At least you're making progress narrowing it down :)

sort of. That was pretty easy once I had the developer tools open. Now the question is why isn't it defined? I know what it is!

What's winBody?

winBody = $(window.document.body)
winBody.innerHTML == "...<div id=thumbnails></div>...";
yet in IE, winBody.down('div#thumbnails'); isn't working
I suspect a timing issue
Specifically the JS gets called before the docuemnt has finished loading

Ah ha

11:24 PM
However adding a delay doesn't seem to help..

Hm, it works alright in window.onload for me in IE8

Good idea, let me try it that way :-)
Still nothing, lemme try getElementById...
Very odd

Q: List of close reasons for Stack Exchange sites?

BenVOriginally I asked this question which got closed because there is an FAQ question that lists the close reasons for the SO trilogy sites. But then I saw this question on Programmers that was closed for being "Not Constructive". This close reason is not listed on the aforementioned FAQ question,...

I don't have enough rep to check multiple sites; is "Not Constructive" a common close reason?

oy.
My testers fail.
I just found a problem >_>

@rchern Who tests the testers?

11:38 PM
@rchern Get out the death ray robots.
3

@PopularDemand I think just on P.SE

@TheUnhandledException Does that work?

@TimStone Seems to, ssseems like .down('#blah') isn't working
I use that 3 times, replacing the other 2

@TimStone Have the death ray robots been tested? If so, by whom?

@TheUnhandledException Do you have .down('#thumbnails') or .down('div#thumbnails')? I tried both (and they worked), but who knows. What version of Prototype are you using?

11:40 PM
oh goodie, works on my machine and dev, but not prod
meh, going home, will fix it there >_>

@TimStone Have the death ray robots been tested? If so, by whom?
Argh
Alright, that's it
I'm removing that key binding

@rchern Tell your users to not use the production server.
@TimStone What key binding?

@rchern Catch you later!

@PopularDemand Using the userscript keyboard navigation, right arrow replies to the selection message, and ctrl + right arrow replies to it
But you have to ctrl + up arrow out of the input box

@TimStone Pah. Userscript.

11:41 PM
And my brain seems to have a hard time remembering to release the ctrl key.
Quoting isn't that important anyway, I think the existing Q key binding is enough.
@PopularDemand If I told you, I'd have to let them kill you.

Ug, now it's breaking on thumbsList.appendChild(thumb.wrap('li'));. Time to give up for the night
Catch you guys later!

See ya!

Bye.
Now it's nearly time for me to figure out dinner plans. The deli downstairs closed five hours ago.
My life is soooooooooooooooooooo difficult.

Food is always so problematic

@TimStone +1 for putting "problematic" and "food" in the same sentence
Also, thank you for being there. The only thing more pathetic than complaining about meal plans online to some guy in a chatroom is complaining about meal plans online to an empty room.

11:52 PM
Hahah

(I had forgotten that The and rch both left.)

I went downstairs to get some food of my own, but that's the extent of my having left.
Also, my university just called me and I told them I don't live here...whoops.

@TimStone That's brilliant if you're an alum and they want your money; not so much otherwise.

I am, and they may have, hahah, but it was definitely unintentional.
The caller ID came up as Unavailable, so I just assumed it was a telemarketer.

@TimStone Good plan.
