hi

hi

buggy system

Q: Does deleting a Stack Exchange account delete all accounts using that OpenID?

WilliamsIf I delete my Stack Exchange account then will it delete my all accounts? (E.g., Stack Overflow, Meta.Stack Overflow, etc.) I want this because the system is buggy and opening account of someone else automatically that is completely wrong and made me frustrated.

The heartbleed bug is starting to make major newspapers here. Online comments are pretty funny. One guy thinks he is safe because he uses an external HD for important stuff, another one thinks he's safe with paypal because he doesn't need to log in there, and then there's this guy who thinks Google and Facebook were vulnerable because they bought a cheap certificate.

10:26 AM
@Stijn yeah, people can be really really stupid sometimes :/

@Stijn The best comment I've seen so far is (legitimate non-trolling) "We knew about this all along which is why we haven't upgraded since 0.9.8."

Do mods delete valid answers often because they feel it is clutter?

@rene I don't think so. They act upon flags, but still.. I want to believe they have good judgment and reject flags as well.

Hmmm, can you give your idea about this
I started two times to write an answer that is almost 100% opposite for the first case. The action delete the answer is wrong IMHO.
brb

10:44 AM
@rene I fear I agree with Gordon on these. What shog meant is that only if the answer can stand on its own it's worth keeping, and I couldn't see how any of those answers mentioned there could be standalone answers except one which was already given in other answer.

10:59 AM
@rene Either the policy on deleting answers has changed, or Gordon handles a different method from what most of the community does.

Hmmm, OK I think I move on...tnx for those insights...

@Stijn Who ? Where? When? I want the link !
@AlulaErrorpone again.... we want the links :P
I must archive that comments in my special "brilliant comments of the web" time capsule.

@SPArchaeologist Can you read Dutch? If not I fear Google Translate would remove most of the humour. link

11:20 AM
@Stijn Use paypal -> you don't have to digit a password -> more secure

If you read the comments you discover that the problem was a typo. And the OP seems to have abandoned the question.

@Stijn my current avatar show my face when I read that line

@SPArchaeologist :D

11:36 AM
@JasonC: hehe, 7 downvotes so far without any explanation. I wonder where a crowd-downvote situation can stop or at least get the first explanation. How many more downvotes have to happen before that? :-)

I've commented that the OP is probably misinterpreting what they think is happening.

@Louis: done

I've now asked that the question be edited to contain the test that the OP is using.
Until this is done, the question should be on hold.
@LaszloPapp Thanks.

I wonder if it makes sense to bring the crowd-downvote situation to Meta.
Perhaps, nothing would change, so why bother.

@LaszloPapp It really depends on the direction you want to take with the crowd-downvote question.
I know some directions that are going to end in frustration (force people to explain, for instance).

11:39 AM
I am not forcing anyone, and I am fine with up to 2-3 downvotes without explanation, although 3 is getting really bad.
but -7 goes beyond the constructive atmosphere IMHO.

@SPArchaeologist No link, it was in IRC

on the positive side, I got also by far the most upvotes for the question =)
@Louis: I personally cannot imagine a good solution for this issue.

Yeah, I don't know what the solution would be.

yeah, although some people hunting for reps or scores might remove valid answers due to this, which would be unfortunate.

Yes, that would be unfortunate.

11:50 AM
@AlulaErrorpone Too bad. I wanted to print it and stick it on the wall of shame, near the one that said "we only use odd SharePoint versions because everyone knows that even ones are unsafe and bug prone"

@Louis: I know the solution! I will create socks to upvote it for myself ;-)

Shhh... don't say it in the open!

I'm not too familiar with the answer (didn't vote), but do you know what was meant at all by this comment?
Your assertions about 'incorrect programming paradigms' are merely circular reasoning. — EJP 9 hours ago
7 downvotes for "circular reasoning" seems odd on the surface, but I'm not able to judge.

Off-topic: That's, like, the third time today that comment's been oneboxed here.

12:06 PM
what is the best way to mark posts for deletion when I gain my capability back to delete vote? Starring the question?

This post by Theo de Raadt on the OpenSSL heartbleed fiasco is enlightening: thread.gmane.org/gmane.os.openbsd.misc/211952/focus=211963 (Unrelated to other discussions currently going on here.)

@LaszloPapp browser bookmarks?

that would need manual clean up :)
I thought starring and then deletion would get it cleaned up automatically.
not sure if starred and deleted stuff is visible.

12:23 PM
This laptop needs rebooting... brb.

@Louis ...we know what you blame if you're gone now! ;)

Louis was a good guy. He didn't deserve to be rebooterated like that.

@jadarnel27 yeah, I was trying to be optimistic
oh noooo

That's what I've always like about you, @ShadowWizard.

But it's time to let go.
And move on.

@rene What happened to the minimum comment length?

I dunno, maybe he added a lot of whitespace?

@Stijn there is a way around
It involve lots of pain but it works :D

@ShadowWizard Do tell :)

That begs for a question about the pain tolerance of The Guy with the Hat

The zero-width space (ZWSP) is a non-printing character used in computerized typesetting to indicate word boundaries to text processing systems when using scripts that do not use explicit spacing, or after characters (such as the slash) that are not followed by a visible space but after which there may nevertheless be a line break. Normally, it is not a visible separation, but it may expand in passages that are fully justified. Usage In HTML pages, the zero-width space can be used as a potential line-break in long words as an alternative to the <wbr> tag. However, the zero-width spac...

I personally prefer zero-width joiners.

12:42 PM
Please, @Doorknob NEVER ever again post that page when I am around. I had an user inserting a zero-width space in a config file some time ago..... it wasn't fun.

@SPArchaeologist Heh, invisible characters have been the start of a long debugging session quite a few times for me before!

@Doorknob Yep, but just figure my face when I discovered that an user actually inserted a zero width inside the name of an app-setting key.
(well, it wasn't an actuall setting key but you get the idea)

12:47 PM
@JanDvorak this would be the answer: youtube.com/watch?v=HPyl2tOaKxM

@JanDvorak just leave "Yes, you can" as an answer. After all he is asking if it is possible, not to actually find it.

@rene amazing :-)
@rene what dialect are the expletives in?

I believe it is Irish....

@SPArchaeologist I sometimes have to fight the urge to submit an official answer that just says "Yes" or "No" when someone asks whether something is possible. The urge is very strong when the question is a wall of text that ends with "Is it possible?"

Flagged as VLQ and "close - shopping"

12:57 PM
@Louis hehehe. So do I, my friend, so do I. Only the fear of the following downvote rain still restrain me.

@SPArchaeologist The reputation system works! :)

Sounds like "happy holidays, Oded", but not quite

1:04 PM
short for Obedience maybe?

So @Doorknob must be a holiday.

@3ventic'sShadow Or maybe he's buying a doorknob, treating it well (so it's happy), and giving it to Oded :P

@Stijn holy frick. The amount of stupid in there is staggering.

@Doorknob We should start collecting the best ones in an archive.

@Bart HLN.be comments are often a source of stupidity, but this article takes the cake :)

I wish I could dismiss that with a "gosh, Belgians" @Stijn, but the Dutch sites aren't much better. ;)

(that reminds me... I still must check if anybody has referenced Heartbleed as the cause of all the hacking on Diablo 3 forums)

1:58 PM
It is so aggravating that nobody I know has any idea what Heartbleed is :-/
"What is that, a disease?"

hey everyone !

Hidy ho @TGMCians!

@Doorknob Most people don't have any idea what anything is that makes everything they do every day convenient for them.

@rene thanks

@LaszloPapp Lol, that virtual function question is a circus. You may have the most upvotes, but I have the least downvotes, so ha! Haha :)

The problem with this one is that the OP gave a link to his code in in the comments.
I've put a comment saying the relevant parts should be in the question.
Until then the question is either unclear or lacks the data necessary for diagnosis (off-topic).

@Louis Man I hate when people do that.
Like it's one thing to post a snippet then link to a full example, but if you can't even be bothered to try and isolate the problem and post a relevant snippet, go away.

@JasonC Same here!

I've got tens of thousands of lines of my own crappy code to look through without having to look through yours too, thanks.

4:58 PM
I have developed a standard comment for this: "The body of the question should contain all the information that is pertinent to the problem. Links are okay but they cannot replace the information which should be in the question." (and variations thereof).
2

I like it. I'm going to steal it.

Say, I know about generic form filling add ons for browsers but is there something I don't know about which would be dedicated to fill in canned comments?

Oh
Yeah hold on there's a good one for SO.

(Yes, I've just asked about "something I don't know about". READ MY MIND! Heheheheh...)

I really like stackapps.com/questions/2116/… although the number of slots is very limited, but it adds a little "auto" button next to comments and you can pick canned ones. It even prepends "Welcome to StackOverflow!" if the user is new. @Louis

5:01 PM
@JasonC Thanks! I've opened the link in a new tab that I will inspect later.

What is the % next to community wiki revision summaries? E.g. "4 revs, 2 users 74%"

@JasonC Yup, it's really nice.

5:31 PM
@JasonC: yes.
that thread became quite non-constructive IMHO
:-)
perhaps someone should dump it into the trash even if I lost the most rep :P
@Louis: I used my last two cv votes for your queries.

@LaszloPapp thanks!

np
@JasonC: I am thinking about casting a delete vote for that thread whenever the closure gets two days old.

Q: Blender 2.6: Select object through Python

JosephI know, this is an extremely simple question, but I've looked everywhere. Maybe I'm missing the point, I don't know; but this should be reasonably easy. My question is simply, how do you select objects by name through Python in Blender 2.6? In 2.4-5, one could simply use: bpy.ops.object.sele...

How come the accepted answer not on top?

@Vader Because it is accepted by the question poster.

Because it's from the OP

5:42 PM
It's by the OP and there's a higher voted one

Hi Vader.

hi?

well, we need a vader hat for the next seasonal fun :)

btw can someone migrate it?
to blender SE

Your own accepted answer on your own question doesn't get special treatment :p

5:43 PM

@Vader it's too old to migrate.

Nope. That's a beta site @Vader.
Probably not going to happen.
And what @MartijnPieters says

okay, good to know

Questions can't be migrated after 60 days without bothering employees, which generally means it won't happen

its not a big deal, but that system is silly

5:46 PM
why is that restriction though?

@Vader Why is that silly?

b/c it should be migrated

And Beta sites need to find their own feet.
No, it should not.

Q: Disable migration for questions older than 60 days

Shog9This has come up a few times now: migrating old questions causes problems. The most popular solution to this to date has been to reset votes on migrated posts. This is do-able, but frankly it feels like treating a symptom, and doing so in a way that penalizes folks who answer what are by all ap...

If it's not explicitly off-topic on SO, migration is not required.

5:47 PM
yes it should it is about the blender python API,
which is more relevant to blender

* Its not off-topic on SO

but more on-topic at blender SE

* It's old, the OP and answerer have no benefit from it being moved

That doesn't matter. More on-topic != off-topic

* The beta site needs to find its own feet without the SO community shoving old posts down their throat.
Migration is for great current questions that also happen to be totally off-topic
By migrating them the OP still gets an answer, in the right place.
Migration is not for back-filling another site with more posts.

5:49 PM
@MartijnPieters: well, strictly speaking, you can almost always potentially get better answers later in the right place.

@LaszloPapp Ohh that was close.
*forum

If you think that question is great for Blender Beta (the site would benefit from it), then re-post as CW with an credit link towards the original post.

@MartijnPieters: why the fragmentation?

@MartijnPieters I am not trying to fill up the blender site

Then leave it be.

5:51 PM
Jesus calm down, I was just asking

@LaszloPapp When there is a topic overlap there is always going to be some fragmentation.
I am not agitated, don't worry.

okay

HE IS NOT AGITATED!! GEEZ!!

“The Force is strong with this one.”

5:52 PM
What's the difference @MartijnPieters?

@Bart Rude, not agitated? :-)

Haha, yeah, I'm afraid I'll have to agree. :D

@MartijnPieters: there is always some fragmentation is not a reason for doing more IMHO.

Sometimes people think I'm Dutch.

do you take that a compliment or offend? :)
j/k

5:53 PM
Some, actually, just so happen to be Dutch.

I used to live in holland

I take that as people being unable to place my accent. That's usually when it comes up.

:-)

@Louis Yeah, that's totally it. :-P

When it comes to accents people will just say anything. I was presenting our work at an expo in Birmingham. I'm Dutch, but the main company is located in Milan, Italy. When I told visitors where we were from, they'd often say "Ah yeah, I could tell by the accent" ....

5:56 PM
Not the 'That haircut looks totally stupid on you' remark..
@Bart Absolutely agree. People guess wrong about accents all the time.

But to mistake my Dutch accent for Italian ...

Of course, marrying a foreigner then living abroad in various places around the world doesn't help.

Haha, well, 8 years of living in Francophone Geneva hasn't made much of a difference for my accent.

@Bart Last time I saw Guido van Rossum his Dutch accent still had not waned.

This Natchi virus stuff s craycray eh?

5:58 PM
decades in the US hasn't made much of a dent in it.

craycray @TCPMAN.EXE? Really?

well, Bjarne still has the Danish accent, too.

@Bart From that sentence you determined craycray is the most wrong part of it?

It's the part that makes me want to hurt you most @TCPMAN.EXE.

Do we need a 'most' reason?

6:01 PM
Yeah, well you're one of those jerks with 'senior' or 'architect' in your job title or something.
