2:00 PM
@qwertynl I sent an email out a few hours ago, did you not get one?

@ProgramFOX, I just skip everything that isn't a reject since I know 99.999% of good edits get approved without me helping them on their way (as well as about 60% of bad edits)

@TinyTim Nope. I did not :-(

@qwertynl Please send me an email directly, tpost@stackoverflow.com and I'll send you a link to the form to get your details
Can you check your gmail spam folder though? You should have gotten that email.

@TinyTim Nope it was not there :-( I am going to send you an email from my main email address

@qwertynl WORRY NOT SQUIRE! Your swag will come.

2:08 PM
I sent you an email @TinyTim let me know when you get it :-D

@qwertynl Sent you a link :)

@TinyTim Thanks. :-) Now I've got to forward that email to my office computer. No Gmail in my office :-(
I shall fill it out soon.
By soon I mean now :-)

I get a ping when someone submits that form, so I'll know when I've got your details and just try to get it out to you then.

@TinyTim I think I filled it out corectly :-)
Don't reveal my secrets! :-P

@qwertynl On meta, no one knows that you're doge.

2:18 PM
@TinyTim :-P

2:38 PM
@qwertynl Shipped, will go out today via USPS.

@TinyTim Yay!
Thanks @TinyTim :-)

I don't know what "doge" is, but this whole Winter Bash thing has made me feel like I should find out.
Mostly because @ElfSlice appears to be obsessed with it.

@qwertynl Where'd you get the swagz?

@jadarnel27 That's the 'Doge' hat.
You can see it on the image that contains all hats:

@UndotheSnowman Cuz I am just that cool ;-)

2:48 PM
@ProgramFOX Thanks! I have actually seen that specific thing here on SE. I just don't know anything about what it's referencing.
=)

@jadarnel27 I also don't know. I also don't see anyone wearing that hat. It's still a real secret.

3:23 PM
Oh, I think it's been confirmed that it's not a real hat. It's just there to throw people off.

@jadarnel27 But.... hats...

Here's the "know your meme" article about it.
goes to read that

3:35 PM
I...don't think I understand "doge" any better after reading that.
But. You know. Wow. Such meme. Cute doge.

ChristopherWMore Please! If I ever stop using Stack Exchange/Overflow, at least I will remember to never use the deprecated mysql PHP libraries and that jQuery is better than everything...even if my question was about Powershell. jQuery reference

4:13 PM
BRB, rebooting I guess.

4:27 PM
Am in doing the math wrong, or was my touchpad software really using ~3GB's of RAM just now?

@jadarnel27 idk... that seemed waaaay too high

I THINK I HAD TOO MANY SHOTS OF ESPRESSO.

That's not a thing, too many shots of espresso.

4:43 PM
Agreed.

I've been trying espresso and Disaronno. I call them espressoronnos. Quite good.

5:00 PM
@qwertynl Oh...I thoroughly agree.
I rebooted, and now it's using 12MB's.

@jadarnel27 weird.

@jadarnel27 How much RAM do you have?
@ElfSlice What?

@hichris123 What what?
What's confusing you?

4 mins ago, by ElfSlice
Oh my.

I said 'oh my' and linked a song.

Oh my for the song?

5:40 PM
@hichris123 Yessssssss

Why?

@hichris123 8 GB's.

@hichris123 Because it's dope

@jadarnel27 4GB :(
@ElfSlice Okay...

@hichris123 =[
'oh my this song is really good'

5:41 PM
Ah.

@hichris123 You would have been in very bad shape, had a process been taking up 3 GB's =)
I also have 2 gigs of dedicated video RAM.
Which is awesome.

@jadarnel27 Yep, I've gotten to 95% RAM someday.
Ug, so want your computer.

@hichris123 To be fair, you probably don't want the price tag that came with it haha.

@jadarnel27 Home-built or standard?

@hichris123 I bought it off the shelf at Best Buy.
It's a laptop.
It's a laptop that weighs ten pounds.

5:45 PM
@jadarnel27 What one?
And I'm on a gaming laptop from '09 right now.

A dentist @TinyTim ?

Well, his bottom teeth were ... err... missing for the most part :P

I stink at drawing... :-(
I have a feeling I am not going to win the drawing competition lol.

A: How to add button in List View?

Vijayaif you google it.. you can find lot of stuff..just go through this link

@hichris123 It's one of the ASUS "Republic of Gamers" line of laptops.

5:50 PM
@jadarnel27 Price?

@hichris123 'lots'

But... I want numbers!

I don't understand gaming laptops. What's the use case?

@hichris123 I truly can't remember how much it was when I got it (over a year ago). I want to say it was around $1,500. Maybe a little more, or less.
@Pops Playing games =)

5:55 PM
But where are you going to play games where you can't have a desktop?

More seriously, though. I like being able to bring it to friend's houses, to play games with them (in person). It's fun to do the headset thing, but sometimes I just like physically hanging out with people.

Ah, that's fair.

For instance, playing Diablo 3 with my brother. I would bring my laptop over to his house, where his desktop is, and we would play together.
Usually we would also be on Ventrilo or some other voice chat thing with our other friends (who couldn't be there).

@jadarnel27 You have physical friends? Where do I get those?
:-)

@Pops Probably not a super common use-case, but that's why I like it =)

5:58 PM
Well, he does have a wife, @qwertynl

@qwertynl You have to go...outside! shudders

@hichris123 I have one of those too :-P
@jadarnel27 but it is scary!

I know, I know.

Marriage? Ha! Suckers! I have a computer with 32 GB of RAM, instead. (Just in case it is not clear to non-room-regulars, this is a joke.)
7

@Pops We allow non-regulars in here? Nonsense. This must be changed. How dare you do this to us?

6:01 PM
@hichris123 hides

@Pops Ummmm I don't get it....
:-(

I occasionally look around my living room, bereft as it is of cool "single guy" gadgets (speakers, cinema screens etc.) and try to remind myself that I love my wife.

@ElfSlice Why would you hide, elf? You're normally in here.

@hichris123 Well, recently I am.

Hey, look when the first time I talked in here was.

6:02 PM
@qwertynl I'm not really claiming that having a nice computer is better than having someone to spend the rest of your life with. The part about owning a computer with 32 GB of RAM was not a joke, though.

@Pops Me want.
The computer part.

@Pops I've only got 16GB here (at my office)

It was really more of a "just because" thing. I never actually do anything particularly intensive on that machine.

Ha

What happens to my VLQ flags?
Do they go to the flag queue, or to the VLQ queue?

6:06 PM
That reminds me, I have to use the "free video game" certificates I got for buying that RAM.
The VLQ queue is one of the flag queues.

@Pops Reminds me of the "Family Decals" xkcd.

I meant Low Quality Posts queue, what's that then?

@jadarnel27 I once told one of my friends "You know, you remind me of an xkcd."

Then I went to look up the link to that one.
But she said "Yeah, I know the one you mean" before I could find it. And she was right.

6:09 PM
Hahah, I need friends like that.

LOL
I hate infinite scroll sometimes...

My wife told me she's discovered that if I start a sentence with, "That reminds me of...", it's going to end with either "an xkcd comic" or "a stand-up comedy bit."
3
The punctuation between those two halves of the statement would be her rolling her eyes.

6:36 PM
My cat is going to be really disappointed when Christmas is over and she can't drink the tree water anymore.

@jadarnel27 My cat is going to be disappointed when she can't nibble on the plastic tree any more.
My cat always has silver poop this time of year.

Haha, nice.

7:13 PM
@Pops /has access to a computational cluster with lots of RAM/CPU.
Can't really use it for anything other than computations though.

7:29 PM
Even if I appropriate the cpus for gaming it won't work because the ssh overhead is too much
I've heard of folks using networked gaming devices as clusters but not clusters as gaming devices :P

Yeah, I built a great computer just for fun, but have no real use for it. I occasionally do some Photoshopping or non-current-gen gaming, but that's it.

@Pops gimme then
:P
Then again, my gaming is offset by 5-6 years too
That xkcd about Portal actually happened to me, in almost exactly the same way, a month ago

Sure thing. I'll charge you what I paid for parts, plus a reasonable hourly assembly fee.

/has no money
I can pay you in meta rep :P

As tempting as that is, given that you are one of the few people with more MSO rep than me, I'm going to have to decline. I like my nice, overpowered, silent computer.

7:37 PM
@Pops Silent? Nice. Does it shut down annoyingly when you put load on it?

Uh... no? Why would you connect silence and shutdown under load?
I'm not sure I've ever really put a serious load on it, though.

@Pops My laptop has pretty low specs but it only slows down in games and never shuts down. A lot of the "gaming" computers these days do shutdown when you actually play games on them without a cooling pad.
CPU overheat, basically

Ah, the CPU heat protection thing.
I put a gigantic heatsink in there, too. Again, probably wasted money.

@Pops I doubt it. Overheat is really annoying and you can end up losing work and all. And it happens when you cram more and more power into a computer. Heatsinks/fans are really important

Again, I actually do very little with this machine. The stock cooler probably would've done fine.

7:46 PM
Depends on which processor you have, the stock heatsink that came with the first/second generation i7s was ineffective at best.

It's nice to have the option to do crazy stuff with your computer, @Pops =)

Yeah, the idea was that it would be a futureproof (or at least future-resistant) development machine.

@TimStone exactly.

But I'll make a note that you have more RAM than I do so I can remedy that. ;)

@jadarnel27 Next time there's a hurricane in New York they'll just failover to Pops' computer.

7:48 PM
Actually they'd probably go for Nick's computer, heh.

That's my personal machine, not my work machine. The work machine is not so beefy (although it's still very nice).

@Pops Cloud source your computer. So we can use your CPU and RAM that you're not using.

@hichris123 I could easily use it all, I have a simulation that can run for days if I set it up for that accuracy/depth

@Mr.Peanut MATLAB?

@hichris123 nah. I prefer Mathematica, but for computationally intensive stuff I use fortran/c++/python depending on the situation. Currently I'm using preexisting open source softwares
(Quantum espresso)

7:56 PM
@Mr.Peanut I tried Mathematica, didn't really understand it. Since you're in the more simulated and theoretical world, it should be better for you, though.

@hichris123 Once you get to know a couple of basic functions and get comfortable with the paradigm, Mathematica is awesome
It's pretty fun to mess around with too

Q: What are the most common pitfalls awaiting new users?

belisariusAs you may already know, Mathematica is a wonderful piece of software. However, it has a few characteristics that tend to confuse new (and sometimes not-so-new) users. That can be clearly seen from the the fact that the same questions keep being posted at this site over and over. Please help m...

@Mr.Peanut I'm used to Java, so my first tendency was to use For loops. But slowness reigned from then on.

I can use matlab, but I don't because I rarely find a situation where it is the best tool in my arsenal. If I want speed, I use a bare language. If I want visual awesomeness and brevity, Mathematica
@hichris123 do. not. use. for.

I know.

Use Table! Map! Nest! Fold!

8:01 PM
How about Do?

same thing
I mean yeah, For and Do become useful at times, but usually .... naah.

So what's the difference between Matlab and Mathematica?

@hichris123 well, matlab is more procedural, for one
It is less visualization-oriented
It is faster usually for numerical solving
And it is more limited to math.

@Mr.Peanut So, would exponent calculations be better with Matlab (no visualization)?

@hichris123 exponent? a^b? I would say they would be just as fast in both
I'm talking about stuff like runge-kutta solving and all
One thing about mathematica is that is is easy to get confused with

8:08 PM
@Mr.Peanut Yeah, like huge numbers.

Also, it tries to avoid the hassle of having you set every knob

I remember we used Matlab in a digital image processing class I took in college. It was fun, though I haven't used it since.

It chooses the best methods and all (though you can explicitly specify if you want). In matlab a lot of things need to be more explicit

And you lost me with runge-kutta.

@hichris123 it's a method of numerically solving differential equations

8:10 PM
Ah.

9:10 PM

Well, if @TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen is right that is

@Bart So'm I. By that definition and by more standard ones.

@Bart Ah well. Don't forget to return the fur coats as you leave.

Seems that user registered specifically for that question

It's been so long since I saw that movie, I don't know if I cried or not.

But if you did, those were brown tears

Brown tears are the only ones I know how to cry.
Man. I need to work that into a song. That's poetry right there.

/me makes screenshot of conversation in case this turns out to be a hit-song

Q: Trolling homework questions - sorting

VictorI am intending to make this a new category of programming puzzle (let's call it "code-trolling"). So you could expect this to be the first question of the series. Q: Code-troll rules

shionaThe first ever question with code-trolling tag (Trolling homework questions - sorting) has been a success and it seems reasonable to assume we will so more of these. It might be a bit early, but I hope to open a discussion on what the rules should be. Original rules: Suppose that some lazy gu...

Why do I have visions of all that getting out of hand?

@Bart I don't think it will, people will probably bar that from happening.

@Bart Because you are just like me.
Looking ahead. We need to just charge into everything.

Q: Should I mark as duplicate if the question is answered elsewhere, but it's not the same question?

D.W.I'm looking for policy or guidance on the following situation. Someone just posted a new question Q1. I noticed that one of the existing answers to another question (Q2) already answers Q1 -- the answer to Q2 happens to be general enough that it answers not just Q2 but also Q1. However, Q1 is ...

Somehow got signed up for a Quora account ;(
I hope that works :P
they've been sending me primarily opinion-based questions for the past month.

@Lance, make sense to post context, for the sake of all?

If you want.

A comment I wrote a few minutes ago. Not sure how well it'll carry over.
@Lance, I see you creating a lot of tag wikis. You're writing the excerpts without using the name of the technology, probably emulating how excerpts appear in the tag pages. Those tag pages do some magic to remove the technology name, even when it's present in the excerpt itself. The same magic isn't applied to the leader that appears when you click on a tag name, and that causes lots of the excerpts you write to appear awkward, IMO. Contrast Facebool-SDK and zentest.
(my opinion, but seems to be commonly held, looking at current excerpts. These comments will self-destruct. @Lance)
nuking the comments now

I hadn't realized that (or just forgot) that the first part was auto-stripped away. I guess it's not too confusing since you get the tag leader by hovering over the tag, so you see it there...
but it doesn't look as smooth so I'll change my ways.
Thanks for pointing that out.

10:58 PM
Not the end of the world, either way. Just caught my attention.
