@Oded (On RM and the consequences of deciding to rebel against civility) I don't know a lot about the details of the man's life, but the little I think I know suggests a history of recklessly burning bridges until he loses access to opportunities that could earn him widespread respect.
What is the definition of insanity again?

But there is no way to help him until he decides to change.

Q: Does Stack Apps have some special rep/CW modifications?

michaelb958I have posted a "question" (actually an app) on Stack Apps, and received two upvotes on it. Each gave me 10 reputation. This runs counter to every other Stack Exchange site - and, indeed, the Stack Apps help center: You gain reputation when: question is voted up: +5 I've also not...

9:11 AM
Are such questions allowed on Stack Apps as opposed to a meta site?

10:06 AM
@dmckee The interesting thing is that the crazy stuff he does (rants, etc.) has NOTHING to do with science, posts, etc. He flips out at any mere sign of authority.

10:58 AM
Just curious about this, but is it ever possible to retrieve all contributions to Stack Exchange sites that you've done (including deleted posts, comments, etc.)?

Possibly via the data explorer I guess @Qantas94Heavy.

Not automatically as far as I know. You can certainly get all your public artifacts via our data dumps
It's a bit complicated depending on your definition of contribution @Qantas94Heavy there is stuff like post revisions, for example, which are stored differently from posts. Then there are comments; there are votes and PII which are never disclosed, etc etc

11:18 AM
@Sklivvz /cc @dmckee quora.com/Ron-Maimon-1/…

Did I read that right? He posted both question and answer?

user228266
@Oded No.

user228266
On quora, the profile image of the persion the questiion is about appears.

Well, there you go. I never go there.
But I do have to say - the conclusion of his answer is one thing that tells you why you shouldn't live your life as he does. Not if you want to have a happy one without having to depend on others, that is.

It's all rather fatalist. Running head-first into a concrete wall, trying to get the most done before you hit it.

11:32 AM
@DImension10AbhimanyuPS Someone just pointed me to the recent comment you made about me on TRF. We have a physics department (we even have a string theorist, possibly two). A pretty good one at that. We have a master's/phd physics program. However, the bachelor's program is Engineering Physics. We do have a fair amount of Engineering, but we have a lot of pure physics. The engineering only steps in in the fourth year, really. Also, we have a lot of high level electives.
There is no staff crunch at IITB.

I just find it incredible that someone who admits his life is so defective has people swallowing every word he says as gospel truth.

... such is life.

We have a bunch of solid state/condensed matter theoreticians, some experimentalists, some optics experimentalists, a bunch of high energy physicists (half theor. and half experimental), at least one string theorist, some people in quantum, some people in quantum computation ... (all I can think of right now, but we do have more)

There is something surprisingly attractive about that for some people @Oded.

@Oded "I got fired from company X because corporations are incompatible with science" -- that's, like, totally false.

11:35 AM
@Sklivvz Well, you know. Like IBM, 3M and such corporations - they don't do science.
Oh. Wait.

I guess that statement relies on some specific definitions @Sklivvz.

I guess if one doesn't have a life of their own, being part of someone else train wreck of a life give you something to live for.

@Oded they don't do people who get in fights for nothing...

@dim There's nothing "well known" about that, nor any truth if applied to IITB (can't speak for the others). In fact, it is well known that the IITB EP program is intense physics (intense as in a lot is taught in the span of 4 years). Most of our passouts do a master's in physics. Most of my batch wants to do physics.

I forget that science means getting in fights. Fight club === high level theoretical physics, right?

11:37 AM
I also study physics on my own on the side. And I'm currently (well, it's paused for the moment) working with a professor on graphene. Theoretical.

Would explain their generally muscular physiques @Oded.

Q: Uuuuuhhhhm Eeeeeeeeeeeek!? Chrome malware warning on main?

PeeHaa I just got a Chrome malware warning on main. Is it just me, Chrome screwing things up or do you people have work to do? It's in Dutch, but you should be able to tell what it is trying to say :-)

zzzzzzzzzzzzz

:)
Looks like there is really something going on. Please don't go the php.net route and simply say it is a false positive and blame google without investigating ;-)

We have our own wheel of blame here @PeeHaa. But strange. Can't repro it at all. Must be location based then ...

@Bart Aaaaaah damnit. @Shog9 screwed up again!!!!

Why they still keep him is beyond me

1:43 PM
:)
@Bart For php.net it also took a night before everybody got the warning. By that time the shit had already hit the fan intarnet
Must be google servers syncing or something like that. If it is genuine FF will spit our warnings soon too because they use the same list

Maybe they have simply detected that question quality is dropping, and users are merely fishing for answers.

@Bart No way that is causing it. It should have been throwing warnings a lot sooner

hehe
bingo @PeeHaa repro-d here.

\o/ yay

2:00 PM
Google updated their quality assurance detection mechanism today, rolling it out to Chrome users. Cited to be the greatest improvement to Chrome since its inception, it has received critical acclaim as taking another step forward towards making the internet a better place.

Finally they use the gibson for good and not evil!

Can moderators take extra notes with a flag?
Or, to avoid a XY problem, is there a best practice method to attach more information than fits in a 'other' flag message for moderators?

you could leave a comment on the post itself or link to a gist containing details :p

Right, but this involves a problem I have with a specific user
and I don't want to hang out dirty washing any more than I have to.
See my recent flags if you want context.
I feel I have to be very terse in a comment to get the point across, barely fitting in the motivations and the evidence.
So, hereby, apologies for the terseness of that one long flag message.
I'll make it a private gist next time.

@MartijnPieters - an email to team@ may be more suitable in such a case

@Oded: I was considering this too, I'll see how this one goes and may email next time, if it comes to that.

@Bart Huh? I just needed to get that image uploaded somewhere. It was supposed to be a parody of the Tennis Court Oath, as "the Reference Frame Oath", .

I'll just go and do something nice and calming and centering now. :-)

Fair enough @Dim. No need to make that an answer though. You can directly upload it to imgur.com itself.

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS that's rather selfish then. Meta is not your dumping ground - it is not your own image repo.
Answers are for... answers.

user228266
@Bart I accidentally submitted the answer, of course.

Just use imgur.com next time. No need for an account even

2:55 PM
@Oded Based on what do you say it is a false positive?

There is nothing on the page that should trigger that - nothing. No links, images or other objects.

@Oded That doesn't mean there is never / has never been anything on that page
Not saying there is a problem, but just saying "I see nothing so there must be nothing" is a bit strange

True enough, but the question was never edited - and we are getting no reports on other questions (or the homepage), which are also ad targets.

Any clue what Google does if we'd mark it a false positive? Investigate I'd hope?

That's the hope

3:01 PM
@Oded Do you guys have access to google webmastertools?

We do - I don't have the access details right now, but @NickCraver and @GeoffDalgas do.

IIRC whatever happened should be logged there with more info

For phishing as well?

I think it is

3:14 PM
I wonder what it would fish for though, if the site would be truly infected. All I did was enter my credit card details, and I could see the questions just fine.

Works as expected then

Yeah, nicely billed to "Coster Payment Services" it seems.

Yeah. I mastered all the steps up to and including "n. Profit!"

:)

lol

@Oded: Oi, I thought we agreed that in exchange for a percentage, I would be processing those CC payments!

0% is still a percentage I guess

Q: Flags in chat are defective by design

Benjamin GruenbaumYes, I know the topic has been discussed before. I know that Meta already has threads that complain about how flagging doesn't work. I wanted to give a practical example. Today, a user came in to the JavaScript chat and asked the following question: Hey guys, as soon as I embed javascript,...

I might just flag that ...

6:59 PM
Go ahead, I don't know if posting questions or having polite conversation is allowed here :)

Nope, we only allow answers here to questions that have not yet been asked. And those have to be rude. :D

Just play this in the background, for added effect:

> Unfortunately, this SME music-content is not available in Germany because GEMA has not granted the respective music publishing rights.

A funeral march (Marche funèbre, Trauermarsch) is a march, usually in a minor key, in a slow "simple duple" metre, imitating the solemn pace of a funeral procession. Some such marches are often considered appropriate for use during funerals and other sombre occasions, the most well-known being that of Chopin. Handel uses the name dead march, also used for marches played by a military band at military funerals and executions. Examples Examples in classical music include: * The Marche funèbre second movement of Charles-Valentin Alkan's Symphony for solo piano, Op. 39, No. 5. * Alkan's...
@ThiefMaster Strangely, the UK is fine. It is a German thing?

9:38 PM
Works just fine here in Switzerland, in all its gloomy and depressing glory.

9:55 PM
@ThiefMaster: thanks for letting me know
It's a great pity he behaves that way; in RL is a great softy and nice guy. I used to work with him.

@Oded Yes, it is only in german

@MartijnPieters: It's most likely not his fault.
The GEMA is the problem. They block most of "their" content because they want youtube to pay ridiculous prices (per view)

Looks like is a bad idea.

@JohannesKuhn No questions there ...

Oded removed all of them..

10:07 PM
Ah, problem solved then. If zombie tags don't bite the other tags, the problem won't spread.
