Of course, if you somehow find Pascal Thivent (from stackOverflow,) he would tell you that I am an idiot and not to listen to a word I say.
He is the real nhibernate expert.
@Pascal: You, like Shog9 before you, have Made It. I hereby certify you Internet Famous.
hi all, I'm looking for a way to convince the Tech people of my school to update IE6
Hi @pops
Anyone has a creative idea for that ?
@HoLyVieR how about a trojan virus?
17:13
that is always a good question...
Any suggestion ? I'm seriously looking for a strong argument
@Fosco You're welcome to call me @Pops but be advised that I get no highlighting or any kind of notification if you do so.
They haven't updated the PHP version we have. The computer we have are running PHP v4.3 :/
if people insists on using IE6, can they still be considered "tech"?
@Hol
@HoLyVieR Is it up to them, or are they following orders from some sort of central office?
17:14
They said they don't have time and we told them we can do it, but they don't want :s
@HoLyVieR do you have any web apps that people need to use?
We have PHP course this semester
if people need to use some web apps that are no compatible with IE6, that could be an argument in favor
they don't have time to install IE?...

Q: How to (kindly) ask your users to upgrade from IE6?

nickfIt's no secret at all that IE6 has been a major roadblock to the advancement of the web over the last few years. I couldn't count the number of hours I've spent bashing my head against a wall trying to fix or debug IE6 issues. The way I see it, there are two types of IE6 user. a) the poor corpor...

17:16
so they don't do much then, do they?

Q: How best to convince people to upgrade IE?

OliI recently asked a question that got shot down for being too strongly worded. I'm having another go today because it's something I really am concerned about and I really do want feedback and ideas from the smart people on SO. IE6 isn't quite the bane of my existence, but it's close. I'm a web-de...

@Fosco Well we have asked them to upgrade a couple of software and they did none during the summer
@PopularDemand I threw a close vote at it.
Did chat just freeze for anyone else?
@HoLyVieR Wish I could help, but I never worked well 'within the system'... I would buy my own machine rather than use a shitty one, or I would hack the shit out of it and upgrade whatever I wanted.
17:22

Q: Uninstall IE8 and install IE6

sugarI need to install IE6 as my default browser and remove IE8. I need this because of the script in my course sylabys.

There are pages more of this stuff if you search SO for "upgrade IE6."
/me cries
@LanceRoberts Good for you. I'll do the same after my next visit from the rep fairy.

Q: How can I find questions that I have asked that currently have bounties on them?

ooo Possible Duplicate: How can I search for bounty questions? How can I find questions that I have asked that currently have bounties on them?

what is this popular demand thing about
17:40
@JoePhillips People who hang out on Meta too much have a habit of changing their names for a variety of reasons; see this post:

A: The Many Memes of Meta

Brad GilbertMeme: Changing your display name on a whim. Originator: Welbog Cultural Height: TBD Official Response: Limited to one change every 30 days. Background: User Welbog likes to change his profile whenever it will make a post of his seem funnier. Other times it seems to just be on a whim. He will also...

When I started participating on Meta, I copycatted the meme. I don't remember the exact post that led me to choose "Popular Demand" anymore, though.
interesting
@PopularDemand who were you originally?
@devinb Lord Torgamus. Still my name on every SE site other than MSO.
I don't think I've ever interacted with you under that name.
Although I'm only really "active" on SO.
mainly MSO now.
@devinb Not unlikely.
17:48
@PopularDemand I always though you just like to see posts "closed by Popular Demand"
@balpha That would only work if I was the first close voter, and won't be truly funny until I have a diamond after my name, which will be never.
Also I changed my name far before I hit 3k.
@Popular I support you for Mod!
@balpha someone has hacked devinb's account, please check into this
how does one become a mod? (i should just read the faq huh?) heh
0
Q: How does one become a moderator on one of the Trilogy sites?

studiohackI'm wondering how one becomes a moderator, say, on Super User. Is there a process? A certain number of reputation points? I noticed that when one hits 10k, he has "access to moderator dashboard". What does this mean? Can one choose whether or not to become a moderator?

The accepted answer there is great:
> The 10k tools are different from the moderation tools; a moderator has both more power and more responsibility (just like Spider-Man). (emphasis mine)
17:54
lol
See also the rare five-pointed mod star of yesteryear:
@PopularDemand can you do me a favor?
@balpha Uh oh. I mean, yes.
okay: leave this room, wait 10 seconds, and come back in
... nuh uh, you're gonna lock the door on me!
Seriously though, do you need me to click "leave" or just close the tab?
Or is there no difference?
18:04
no, click leave
Goodbye.
Hello.
hmm
thanks
Sure.
What is the difference, if you don't mind the question?
Hello
We moved everything 3 pixels to the right while you were gone
18:05
Hi @Chacha102
@PopularDemand difference?
between clicking leave and closing the tab, i assume
Difference between just closing the tab/browser and clicking "leave."
closing the tab does nothing
Clicking leave actually leaves the room
18:07
if it's the last chat tab you have open, you obviously stop polling the server when you close it
You only leave the room if you click leave or it detects that you aren't in ANY room after a while
leave lets the server know immediately that you're leaving.. closing the tab takes a while for it to figure that out by lack of connectivity.. i think.
if you haven't polled for 10 minutes, you auto-leave
@Fosco precisely
Yeah, okay. Kinda figured, but it's nice to hear it officially.
We need more official things
18:08
G'day @Chacha102
Balpha.. I demand you make a blog
Yeah, thinking about it. Again. Like the rest of us, I've probably started 5 blogs and never got past the first post
My blog has about 20 posts... and it won't get past that for a while
How does it determine what portion of a name to display for one line chat texts? So far the only oddity that stands out to me is Chacha10 instead of Chacha102
18:10
@Fos How's it going?
3 characters
@Fo Hows it going?
all good here man.. you?... im off tomorrow, dying to get out of here today
3 character case-insensitive reverse-chronological lookup
I think you're answering totally the wrong question
@Fosco then your window is to small
it shows you as much as it can
to be precise, it's left to the browser
What @MichaelMrozek said.
18:11
@balpha bingo... stretched it a little and the name appeared.
Ah yeah, I answered the wrong question..
so if you have a browser that thinks that numbers are a word boundary, the name might actually have been "Chacha"
Maybe I should just make my name 'Cha'
Oh @balpha It might be a good idea to make the cooldown reset when a Mod changes your name
Currently if a Mod changes your name, the cooldown isn't affected in anyway
Mods can change usernames?
18:13
Gah.
@Chacha102 I only work on the chat, currently
Mods can also come into your house at night and leave your milk out. Some mod abilities aren't talked about much.
5
@Shog9 Joke's on them, I don't have a house.
→ 2 messages moved to Chat feedback
@PopularDemand Do you have milk?
18:16
@Shog9 No, I'm male.
Then you have nothing to worry about. I hope...
Related: who packages milk and half & half in identical packages -- save for the text identifying them as milk or half & half -- and then sells them side-by-side in the cooler?
Farm Fresh, that's who.
@popular. Assholes. that's who.
Oh... it was rhetorical.
It's a good thing I decided to look at the carton when I put it in my fridge, or I'd have been eating cereal in half & half.
cereal is delicious with half&half
orange juice, OTOH...
...is also delicious with half&half
18:22
Crap... I just realized I have a double standard. And it's all @shog fault

A: What is the minimum length for an answer to be considered hot?

Shog9On the off-chance that it is 1000 characters... waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaff...

double-standards are awesome. Except when women have them.
@devinb why would you up-vote that?!
I voted up that answer, even though it was primarily because I respect the author.
Because it's funny.
I know I know. I'm ashamed.
Crap. Can I undo it?
yes
just watch the editing - if it becomes CW, the test is over.
Done. I'm taking a break from Meta. and SO. And Chat.
as long as you don't abandon SU...
18:25
Back to IE6 I go. At least I can't do any harm there.
it does harm for you! IE6 is so helpful.
@devinb Based on earlier tests, you might want to use IE 4.01 or IE 5.01.
If you hit IE 3, you've gone too far.
Well, I'm not getting paid to work with those.
@Shog9 Come to think of it, is this night time local time? Night time the mod's local time? Night time SO Time (AKA UTC)?
It's half-past noon
18:33
Night time does not exist
time does not exist
existence does not exist
@JoePhillips Someone read a certain bobince post one too many times.
bobince does not exist!
regex is not capable of parsing HTML
@JoePhillips Well, sure, not anymore.
well if time does not exist then "anymore" doesn't exist either. Oh man, I ate too much sugar
18:36
@JoePhillips Perhaps you don't know what I'm referring to. See here:

A: RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags

bobinceYou can't parse [X]HTML with regex. Because HTML can't be parsed by regex. Regex is not a tool that can be used to correctly parse HTML. As I have answered in HTML-and-regex questions here so many times before, the use of regex will not allow you to consume HTML. Regular expressions are a tool th...

@JoePhillips drink more coffee to offset that
(You really have to click the link, the onebox doesn't show the important part.)
Haha. I've seen that before (I can tell by the upvote) but I forgot about that
@JoePhillips Yes, it is tempting to block it out of your memory.
so whats the fuss is all about?
18:41
How can you forget that???
... my milk is going to be left out tonight, isn't it?
@synhershko What do you mean?
/me drinks your milk
@JoePhillips Nice try. You're no mod.

Q: Updates From all Stack Exchange accounts?

Petey BIs there anyway to view updates (responses, comments, favorite changes, etc) from all your Stack Exchange accounts in one place? Rather than having to go to all Stack Exchange pages you are a member of and check if the envelope is coloured in. Edit: Quite the captcha,

Check out that CAPTCHA!
> oflinced -_-^-_-^-_-
what's so hard?
I'd have gone with oflincea, actually.
As for the second word, you're off your rocker. It's ~~~.

A: Alerts about activity on associated accounts

Joel SpolskyThe plan is to have a common notification page that pulls together all your notifications from throughout the network. Then we can turn on some kind of envelope icon when there's something new in the notification page.

@PopularDemand, your comment on Joel's answer on the "Create a page" question is hilarious.
19:33
@rchern I'm not sure which one you're talking about, but... thank you? (Thanks are valid iff I was trying to be funny. Other restrictions may apply.)
Oh, that one.
Thank you!
link?
@Fosco Don't get your hopes up, it wasn't that funny:
I thought it was funny. >_>
what a let down
@rchern I appreciate it! But you know how it is when things get overhyped.
19:36
I think this is a sign that I'm close to mentally checking out for the day.
@rchern Ouch.
oO?
@rchern "I thought @Pops's joke was funny. I must be mentally out of gas." I see how it is.
I'd better check out too, though; got a package to sign for.
No, I was referring to my potentially thinking things are funnier than they may be and my use of hilarious
Get a room you two!
haha jk
i already checked out for the day... at 8am this morning.
when i woke up.

1 hour later…

While almost everyone's first word about this chat is that it will kill their productivity even more, it's odd how the activity varies.
Well... it might be useful, as long as it doesn't get meta-meta-SO. "Hi guys - what do you think about the meta question I posted about that SO question?"
@viraptor LOL Too late.
Among the things chat oneboxes, are SE questions and stuff:
5
Q: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is special linking to some sites in chat. What is the full list of supported and integrated sites?

It just hit me that I know this interface! It's Google Wave... remastered
@viraptor Heh. I believe it was inspired by Campfire.
22:40
True, never seen it before
However, you make a good point about it being better than Google Wave.
Well - it loads in <30s on firefox, so they've done "something" right
@viraptor Neither have I, but I believe I saw Jeff Atwood or one of the chat devs mention Campfire. I guess I could try searching the transcripts.
@viraptor Yup. Wave's clunkiness is the basic reason it failed, IMO.
Now, if only I didn't get 3 notifications every time someone references me (1 for each open chat window)
in Chat feedback, Aug 5 at 18:59, by Jin
we used to use Campfire.
Yah, the notification is still a bit wonky. They're working on it.
@viraptor Wait until you get a notification for a room in which you are not present, but in which you had activity.
22:57
Chats on SO, Diaspora to be released in ~2 weeks, xmas came early this year.
I just saw the blog post, seems promising
@DecioLira Eh? Blog post? Where?
@DecioLira OIC, thanks.
Hope it's not yet another Wave... Lots of noise but noone actually uses it. I'd really like to be able to delete by FB account at some point.
23:02
@viraptor BTW, you can dismiss the notification by hitting ESC, typing something or clicking your jumping avatar.
WOOOOwwwww..... :D
me too, would be nice to delete my fb account
Also, clicking your jumping avatar scrolls you through notifications. But, it references the last one that you clicked through.
the difficult part will be attracting non tech people
Give them farmville with free pigs from the start and they will come...
23:05
heheh...
23:25
Speaking of Facebook, I just realized that I haven't checked it all day, nor Twitter.
