@ShadowWizardLoveZelda It's not so much the downvote, but the feeling of being unappreciated. People, noobs in particular, treat every post like a small personal project. Their reaction after getting a downvote is kinda like "Whoa, I spent my whole life 2-45 minutes completing my masterpiece and the reaction from the crowd was a disinterested downvote and nothing else."
A downvote with a critical comment is much better than just a downvote: Now they can direct their anger at someone in the crowd, and someone did care enough to comment, which is worse than not paying attention
