You prefer tea, or coffee?

Q: We’re (finally!) going to the cloud!

Wouter de KortStack Overflow has existed since 2008. At that time, it was a logical choice to run this from our own hardware in a datacenter. The company started with a small group of people who owned every aspect of the application, from the infrastructure to the code. We built a monolithic application that s...

I'm a little sad about this, as a oldtimer. On the other hand, this does mean if things go horribly wrong, we're not going to have SREs handing buckets of diesel in a chain
09:11
@JourneymanGeek The specific provider choice is seriously making me think about finally deleting my account here.
If you suddenly see this user become user#3954578539392 you will know what happened.
@ꓢPArcheon tbf, I think all the choices are terrible
your other big choices are really amazon and MS
both of which have issues
@JourneymanGeek Considering that the LLM partnership is with Google specifically, the ads come from there and the allowed tracking pixel comes from there too, choosing Google only means that they will now have full control of the infrastructure.
So, anything else is better.
@ꓢPArcheon I think they've got one with openAI as well and have used their stuff in the past
also, in theory, tuning aside, (citation needed) - the tech base they're talking about, K8s and terraform, are generally platform agnostic
there's nothing stopping them from, entirely in theory, switching providers or even re-migrating back to physical servers given a need, resources and time
@JourneymanGeek entirely in theory there is also nothing stopping them reverting the data dump mess?
a good many things are about political will, not technical needs
also, unless google buys over SE, its still going to be guided by our semi-dutch overlords
09:18
I don’t know what K8’s are but I’m sure they aren’t as good as K9’s.
@ElementsInSpace Well, I can't disagree :D
Kubernetes (, K8s) is an open-source container orchestration system for automating software deployment, scaling, and management. Originally designed by Google, the project is now maintained by a worldwide community of contributors, and the trademark is held by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. The name Kubernetes originates from the Greek κυβερνήτης (kubernḗtēs), meaning governor, 'helmsman' or 'pilot'. Kubernetes is often abbreviated as K8s, counting the eight letters between the K and the s (a numeronym). Kubernetes assembles one or more computers, either virtual machines or bare metal,...
And you think the service choice is entirely technical? anyway, I didn't mean to start a discussion, just leaving a posthumous notice here in case I leave
@JourneymanGeek Yeah it's definitely a little sad. I have put my name on a list -- I totally want to own NY-WEB10 or NY-WEB11 once we decommission the datacenter. Those are the webservers that host Meta, and I want to keep some of that history.
@ꓢPArcheon I mean, moving off physical servers are entirely technical
I don't have any insight over the 'why' - I know they run some of the SoFT or So Enterprise stuff on azure so in theory, they could have gone there
@JourneymanGeek I think you evaded my point. Clearly it was not about moving, it was about where you move to.
09:20
@ꓢPArcheon I don't work at SE. I don't have a seat at, or under the table :D
@JourneymanGeek don't sit under the table, nobody has vacuumed there in ages
@balpha pfft. standards have dropped
I actually have 3-4 other questions, one of which less confrontationally (semi) asks about why google but...
(in time? Maybe someone else might? :D)
@balpha I mean, in theory, and this was a very long time ago, mods heard the good gossip :D
@balpha Swag contest for server parts? :D
@balpha I apologise to you and your co-workers in advance :D
(also to meta mods)
I vacuumed and mopped all my floors this weekend, including under the tables. I even moved furniture and a rug outside for proper cleaning!
09:29
(also if either of y'all groups of folks prefer I ask one omnibus question, LMK)
@Tinkeringbell my now slightly senile feral robot vacs deal with it :D
@JourneymanGeek I still want one, but first I have to save up for a car, then for a bicycle, and I also want some more curtains (blinds?) at the back doors/windows to isolate things a bit better there...
@JourneymanGeek I have no details on the decision, but ... why not? It's not like people couldn't come up with conspiracy theories if we moved it to Azure or AWS 🤷
I'm trying to get this place shut in enough that I will never have to turn on the heat in winter, just burn a few candles in the evening :P
@Tinkeringbell aside from the tendancy to try to break into my loo, and getting stuck...
@balpha Well yes :D
@JourneymanGeek Oh, my loo has a door. As long as the vacuuming can't reach the door handle, I should be good :P
09:32
@Tinkeringbell ah, I have a bifold door kept closed by a magnet...
since I'm at my place like once a week, mine will keep bumping the door till it opens, go in, and get stuck
@balpha Well, yes :D
@JourneymanGeek Any plans on moving permanently soon? Is there much moving to be done still?
@Tinkeringbell kinda put off a bit but I'm getting stuff in place
mix of personal situation + parents needing support
Ah. Shame, living on your own is great and you got a pretty neat place to look forward to!
I did move my services there :D
My blog runs from my home internet (behind cloudflare :D)
09:54
Sounds nice!
10:09
saves me a bit, and as a bonus (despite cloudflare bouncing my traffic off hong kong) its a little less latency so things feel faster
@Tinkeringbell also I've still not quite made up my mind on a computer desk ._.
@JourneymanGeek I'd recommend you mine (IKEA Jerker) but they don't make em anymore :P
@Tinkeringbell Oh that's part of the problem
ikea made the perfect legs
the ikea oddvald. Was black, trestled and no fuss
But not anymore? That's a standard thing with IKEA stuff it seems...
I also got a set of vinegar/oil bottles: perfect little things... wanted a second set recently, guess what? They don't sell those anymore.
Ah yep, same here. Seems they aren't too pricey on the second hand market here though
10:21
You would notice. It does not come in black
Hahaha well spray paint!
ah, I had a 'worse' idea actually
though I didn't mess up my last rattle can job
but I'm just annoyed its not in black primarily :D
paint exists
@JourneymanGeek Oh sure, I get that :)
@ElementsInSpace Well yes, but I've a lack of confidence in 1) my painting skills 2) how it'll look like in a few years
here's a more anniying part
this exists. but not here
they only have it in white

2 hours later…
12:12
@balpha will you run unicornify on them? ;)
12:23
@ShadowWizard That would be a brilliant twist, because Unicornify has always been running on GCP (even before they called it that)
12:43
@balpha awesome! So I hope to see it getting a boost. :-D
@Feeds nom
Inter Galactic Spoon?
inter planetary spoon
the OTHER IPS :D
13:59
The better one ;)
14:53
(only half joking... site is basically dead and filled with off-topic stuff)
@Tinkeringbell add some creme brulee then. :D
I dunno, I've never tried to make it. But I've had some in restaurants and that was good :)
I might one day try. For now, I'm busy with other recipes
Fair!
!!/creme Tink
@ShadowWizard No such command 'creme'.
15:04
On that note, I should soon go do the grocery shopping for this week. Lots to get, friends coming over on Saturday ;)
@Tinkeringbell yay! (I guess?)
@ShadowWizard Yeah, yay! It means workday is over :P
@Tinkeringbell sad. I mean, you can see how a didactic approach to EQ can be useful.
But I suppose unless it turns into sort of a soft science it's hard to trust anyone's word to be encompassing on interpersonal relationships
It's also not a site for interpersonal relationships... just because it involves more than 1 human doesn't mean it's suited for the site... the whole thing with interpersonal skills is that they're much narrower than that, so the topic is limited to the behaviors you use when interacting with others (to achieve certain goals), as that's what the skills part is. To have a site that didacts on EQ or relationships in general, you'd need a whole different topic.
@ShadowWizard some royal chef somehow burnt the upper layer of custard and decided to call it a new type of dessert I reckon
15:16
@M.A.R. Well that chef was right :P
@Tinkeringbell sure I mean, these skills depend foremost on the relationships
We're halfway to writing a book already
@Tinkeringbell I mean the friends coming over. ;)
I want a cool Venn diagram with seven circles
@M.A.R. that is actually... correct! :D
> The first printed recipe for a dessert called crème brûlée is from the 1691 edition of the French cookbook Le Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois by Francois Massialot, a cook at the Palace of Versailles. That version was a sweet custard of egg yolks and milk with a burnt sugar crust. It is similar to the modern versions.
@ShadowWizard Yesss! I have finally figured out humans.
15:21
@M.A.R. 8 circles.
Or there will be no book.
@ShadowWizard Ohhh. No that's just a hassle. One of them needs lactose and gluten free food.
Not to mention all the cleaning :P
@M.A.R. wow, I'm happy for you. :D
7.2 is the best I can do. Take it or leave it
@M.A.R. No book it is.
@Tinkeringbell so, water?
@Tinkeringbell water is lactose and gluten free
15:22
I shall mention it to her :P
You have three more cooking protips in the trial version
@M.A.R. well, that's the best GenAI can do: (via OakBot)
I've also got several types of fruit/vegetable as snacks, I'm making gluten-free tortilla wraps and a gluten-free apple pie.
I'm getting some charcuterie type meats, those are safe too
Oh, and just plain old potato chips :P
It's not too hard, I'm just making it hard with my whole 'I want to bake gluten free/lactose free' stuff.
@Tinkeringbell potato chips, or french fries? ;)
@ShadowWizard potato chips
I wrote that.
15:25
hmm now to see what's the difference!
ah the shape.
Doesn't look gluten-free to me.
If you simmer it in vegetable oil for 15 minutes, the gluten will wash away
Ah, I could try that then. Well, I'll see if they have any in the supermarket, I'll report back in an hour or so ;)
@ShadowWizard well - it's still my job! don't expect me to spend my working days here and also spend my free time here - not that I don't like y'all, but there's a lot in life I want to do ;)
and - tea - handily.
@M.A.R. even so, it's eventually going to get glutened down to the PCB
15:33
@M.A.R. that belongs in a museum
hm
We have our first wontfix. A TAG HAS GOTTEN ITS PSUDOPODS! AT LAST
ah, tags. they grow up so fast
!!/tea Slate
@ShadowWizard brews a cup of lemon tea for @Slate
lemon... tea!?
Well start with this tea. :D
15:42
'bout the only sort I can drink sadly ._.
@Slate actually any tea is better with lemon. ;)
I doth not care much for the tannins
you haven't had good tea, friend
many high-quality teas are neither tannic nor particularly astringent
15:43
Eleeza is also a tea expert.
@Slate dad grew up in sri lanka so... I'd assume it was decent tea :D
chinese stuff tastes of very little
I'm sorry to say, if it tasted of very little, you can do much better
there's just some stuff that.. I donno, me no likey :D
no argument there!
(thankfully its dis/less-like not allergies ._.)
15:47
yeah I can't imagine
tea allergy must be very uncommon. I do know people who are allergic to the contents of tea trichomes but that really only matters for specific teas
I'm allergic (mildly) to pineapple :D
causes me a lot of stabby pain in the mouth
Well, my mom also makes a good (lactovegan) tea cake too
which is good :D
yeah that definitely sounds like allergy
16:09
@JourneymanGeek You are removing the spiky bits, right?
I mean, it would be lifechanging if that was what I was doing wrong...
pinning down the entire pineapple with one paw, and just chomping into the side
ah no
last time I had pineapple was at a wedding, and someone handed me a glass of what was apparently very good pineapple juice
16:37
they could still have juiced the spiky bits!
the mini umbrellas can be crunchy
That took loooooong. I'm a 110 euros poorer but I've got way too much food now :P
@Slate Well and the leaves I guess. But I somehow think not
@Tinkeringbell no, no, not poorer - exchanged for non-fungible tokens of equivalent value
16:59
You can't eat money. :D
@Slate Eh, eventually those NFTs will either rot or be composted and lose their value, so I'm already counting them as a loss for tax purposes

1 hour later…
18:32
@Slate haha. that's a pretty common thing thing where I am
18:50
ah, you want some too, eh?
!!/tea starb
@ShadowWizard brews a cup of jasmine tea for @starb
(so that the other star won't get it as well ;))
@Tinkeringbell oh wait, NFT still exists? Thought it disappeared silently from the world. As it should. :/
19:38
(continuing on my earlier comment, the name is lemon tea, but it's short for "iced lemon tea", so... really just a form of iced tea)

2 hours later…
