On the site that I'm most active on (music), one of the moderators stepped down due to being promoted in the real world.
The election was called, but with only a few days to go in the nomination phase no one had applied. So I decided to put my name forth.
Unfortunately, with only one candidate running, the nomination phase got extended by a week.
A banner at the top of every page on the site promoted the election for this week, and five other candidates nominated themselves.
(some of them weren't particularly serious).
I got about 40% of the primary vote, and crossed the 50% threshold after 4 rounds of elimination with more than twice the votes of the candidate in second (see the results here)

@PetəíŕdTheLinuxWizard nah, talking about emails, not SE inbox. Now I have only 3638 unread items there, could be thousand more but I did mistake at some point and lost many. cries
But yeah FOX has around 50k items in the SE inbox. lol

@Mithical I honestly don't think any media will care much about this at all. In addition, the agreements with the volunteers are not legally binding, which therefore makes this situation a bad example of what SE would do in a legally binding agreement.
