@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog stuff did speed up after hiring rampled up. Good intentions are no substitute for actually having what you need to get the job done....
+ presumably better morale

1:19 AM
@Ollie Actually - Glorindel, Tink and I use a userscript for MSE to do that
When on my phone I sometimes close, wait for a comment, then delete, or just delete...
the workflow really is 'whatever you feel works best' and mods kinda have a little more freedom to do things

@cairdcoinheringaahing also useful datapoint - it was Animuson and Grace handling the queue proper a while, and ticket assignment - and I think it was mentioned they got moved to paid support
they also changed ticketing systems at least once, maybe twice in the past few years

@SPArcheon sounds more like hacking attempt, hope you didn't register any app...
@Rob riddle for you. What is this?

7:52 AM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 explain your reasoning. The ISP ... I hate them with passion - it is not a secret. They are a bunch of clowns whose sold bandwith is far more than they can manage, so they just steal from people to stay afloat. Today, my connection goes bad, tomorrow they will make someone else day miserable so they can still manage to survive.
Now. You assume hacking. Tell me. What would someone gain from using the phone number of MY sim to register on an E-Commerce thing? Suppose it was Amazon... would you tie YOUR account recovery to MY number? So that I can call them and have your stuff delivered to ME?

8:06 AM
@SPArcheon trojan? They might install themselves in weird ways on phones, some Israeli tojan did it (maybe can still do? not sure) when the person just view infected gif on their phone.
So, unknown SMS... asking to register something... super fishy.

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 not a phone, it is just one of those wi-fi 4g modems that use a data-only sim.

@SPArcheon oh that part I missed, didn't figure you can use SMS in a modem. It's like... using refrigerator as a phone? :D

8:22 AM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 why shouldn't you be able to? Yep, it doesn't have many usages, but basically a 4g/5g modem with a phone sim is.. just a smarth phone that can't do calls
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Furthermore, the message isn't asking to register anything.
The message is basically in the form
> this is your email verification code. Please use this to verify your phone number in your personal account page.
So, basically it is one of those "verification" codes sent by Amazon and the like to check you actually own the phone number you used during your customer registration

@SPArcheon I see
So the poor soul couldn't verify.

Basically. Seems likely someone mistyped their number, didn't receive the code (obviously) and then clicked the usual "resend verification code" link every app seems to have without checking they had the correct number.

@Luuklag I wasn't here! I demand a recount! There's a lockdown going on and not everyone can vote

@M.A.R. technically, if you have a recount, its for votes already cast...

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 pfft, that's millenial talk
@JourneymanGeek well by the time they start the recount I would have been votinged
English tenses. Who will have time for them

votinged, how pretty of a word is that :)

more flags please, seed up since 1h+ patents.stackexchange.com/a/24330
@Luuklag would it not make sense to report these spammers to Smoke Detector?

@tripleee That's where they came from @tripleee. Just pinging Jnat to nuke anyone that has multiple site accounts

we could probably automate that if it's useful
but I thought we thought it was useful to let them keep their accounts because it just makes it faster to nuke the spam when they do post something

@tripleee Depends on how much work Jnat want's to have

1:13 PM
@tripleee I don't know
Maybe @Journey, or @sha know the reasoning?

1:25 PM
uhhh
there's no great way to nuke spammers across the network, and Jnat's willing to help. I'd rather not overload him tho

@tripleee Destroying the accounts contributes to SpamRam blocks.

Even the way we have isn't really "a way" - It's just manually deleting them on each site.

Rob
@tripleee It is usual practice in The Tavern to report network accounts of users who have spammed more than one site, and where that's mostly the only activity on the account, so the Community Manager can delete all their accounts network wide.

@Rob I'm not sure how challenging it would be to set up a dashboard on Metasmoke to display that information, but that sounds like a good way to make this information available
FWIW the spam seed for the cryptocurrency spammer is still up patents.stackexchange.com/questions/24329/…

Rob
That, and reports that have been languishing too long (discussed a week and a half ago over at Charcoal HQ); but we need only to write-up a request at GitHub and someone might do the coding; or there will be a disagreement about how best to implement it, and it will sit on the back burner.
@tripleee Gone.

thanks!
I'm hoping to make some updates to Halflife so it could also be a solution if we don't particularly look for a metasmoke solution
but it always seems my hopes get shattered before I get to do any substantial updates to it

Rob
That's a great way to ensure that it gets done.

Rob
3:10 PM
@tripleee A "MetaSmoke solution" would be something like this webpage (Core only) located on the bottom of the "Tools" tab. I spent the last 15 minutes searching StackApps to see if something was already written, but nothing jumped out at me.

3:29 PM
@Rob neither SmokeDetector nor metasmoke currently checks acoounts across sites but I guess that's not an excessive burden, though I know we have tried to minimize our API usage
which is one of the reasons Halflife could be a better solution, because it doesn't currently use the API at all

Rob
3:42 PM
@tripleee I notice that you have written many Blazer queries starting with the text "Spam per" - perhaps a new one titled "Spam per user on more than one site" would be useful. It could run once a day with low priority, finding network accounts of users who have one SmokeDetector report on more than one site; the output should be copy-pastable to here on The Tavern.

No it's Spamper. It's a diaper brand that means to replace Pampers because they're evil.

Rob
Like Casper, but for ones that are good.

3:57 PM
@Rob again, the problem with that is that we don't currently have any linkage between related network accounts

Rob
4:35 PM
@tripleee Perhaps Gutenberg could be a starting point for the code. After modification it could detect the link being copy-pasted to multiple Q&As and check if there was a SmokeDetector report; that would find not only single accounts posting on multiple sites but also multiple accounts posting the same spam.
Storing the network account ID of each author from a SmokeDetector report would allow correlation of accounts where a different name is used on each site, yet it's the same account.

4:58 PM
@JNat Here's a cross-site spammer: stackexchange.com/users/22940234/marcela-perez

I think the pinned "Maintenance on 1 Oct" announcement may be unpinned now...

@Rob ugh, it's Java
it's not hard to get the information from the API but I think we'd need to discuss where it makes sense to do
