@JourneymanGeek well the apps are dead, that's a fact.... so it's just matter of time before SE turns the server itself down. IMO it's a mistake to keep them alive as they cause damage, mainly users unaware they're dead using them, then get disappointed when something isn't working and they're bashed when trying to report it.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating True, but isn't the app relying on the API? Pulling the plug from that would be far from helpfull I guess.

@Luuklag oh, not talking about API, this will stay, just shut down the app servers, i.e. app which is already installed won't work anymore, and of course taking it out of Google and Apple stores.

3:25 PM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating isnt that the same as the API?

@Luuklag not at all... the API existed long before the apps, and will (hopefully!) exist much longer after the apps are only a dim memory in the past. :)
The apps only use the API behind the scenes.
Using my car example... the API is the fuel of the car... it can fuel other cars as well, old or new. :)

Q: 2020: a year in closing

Nicolas ChabanovskyI am thrilled to share that this year we are continuing a tradition started by Shog9 five years ago. Please welcome stats that highlights how many questions were closed on different Stack Exchange sites in 2020: Site Asked AskedAndClosed PctAskedAndClosed AllClosed DuplicatesClosed Duplicates...

I was initially a bit sad to not see MSE on there due to how many lost souls we have, but Shog defended his choice not to lump MSE into the post he made back in 2019:
I honestly kinda hate lumping MSE into stuff like this, @Troyen - it's not really comparable to any other site, and the closest sites to compare to are... Other meta sites, which I also don't post #s on. Might be worth doing separately at some point, but... Eh. — Shog9 Jan 3 '20 at 2:09

Yes.

That is what freedom in a democracy looks like ...

This is what captivity in democracy looks like, the wire isn't deployed with such precision:

@Spevacus Gone!

We'll have to lengthen your abbreviated pseudonym:
+1 for sortable .. or at least sorting them alphabetically ;) if that's not an option. — tink 9 mins ago

@Rob Also, one of the most discussed usernames on meta: meta.stackexchange.com/…

A comment on a -20 post from 2016 reminded me this thing still exists. So I feel I should share some wise message here.

user302202
I guess the message is: if the 2020 US election was not so obviously rigged, Dukakis would have won.

Rob
The longest name, not as a result of a bug can be found here: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1006992/…
It's not a reliable query, as Griffen is listed as 35 letters long (and doesn't seem to have invisible characters in their profile).

@Rob you doubt sql server?

Rob
@VoteDukakis It could have been Bootygig
^ Something's fishy, as I can't help but think that there are longer names; but that query works better than most of the others; returning the default UUID.

@rene Thanks, I tried selecting in the user profile; and they were stripped. Avoids @'ing I presume.

Oh, that might indeed not work. Clever.

@VoteDukakis huh? welcome back!?

@Rob Receptors and ligands can often be extremely complicated. One very common thing you find in molecular bio is that there are receptors that fit only half of a ligand and "float" freely in the membrane. They have little tails in the cytoplasm that flap around wildly and if they're near each other for long enough, they activate each other (often cross-phosphorylation). The only way they'll be near each other for long enough is if their "heads" outside the cell both bind to the same ligand.

@Spevacus in a good year most of what we do is herd lost souls 🤣

11:45 PM
We are but humble guides for the lost. Our pitchforks are now shepherd's hooks, our torches now open, empty hands.
