@LemmyX Lots of people took stands in different ways.

@Shadow Can you please remove meta.stackexchange.com/questions/302471/… as a duplicate target from meta.stackexchange.com/questions/345570/…? I mean, I'd appreciate the extra publicity, but it's really not that relevant to that question.

How's Ash throughout all this hubbub?

@Magisch ... quite well. He's doing at least one long walk (that's to say, he walks till he can't be bothered and makes me carry him home) a day
Since I can't go to work till the second

our office dog is going stir crazy

Ash is fairly low energy + he sleeps a lot + we don't have no silly no petting rules :D

I can still pet him in the morning before work

Is Salesforce.SE intermittent for anyone else in North America, if a page does load when it's reloaded that usually fails.

1:02 PM
@Rob pages load for me but I do have a load error in the dev console GET googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT
I'm in Europe ...

Rob
It does seem to work more consistently this past while, when I asked it usually didn't work (for ~10 minutes). Maybe a CAT6 replaced the rat-chewed cable. I got the page that says the error was logged a few times; once it was stripped bare (no HTML) and appeared as a single line at the top of the page; which was weird. Thanks for looking, it seems to work consistently ATM.

@Rob or could be one server in rotation with issues

Rob
If someone has idle time and curiosity they can poke around, the page I saw claimed it got logged; so there's something for someone to see. If we get more reports elsewhere in the hours to come we have a starting point, I'm not going to open a meta for a no-repro that appears to have cleared itself; or shuffled the blame elsewhere. BTW: Enjoying your time off?

@RobertLongson It's not, though. It's a genuine question about SE's policies. Again, if I wanted to ask SE to force them to change their policies, I would have titled this question "SE, please change the policies of Medical Science SE". I included the link only for context, and I would be happy to remove it if necessary. — nick012000 9 hours ago

"genuine question"

what isn't a genuine question

@user400654 The OP's loaded "just give me a yes so I can shove it in their faces" rant

Yeah... it's clearly a loaded question based off a ton of incorrect thinking.

Poor, poor MedSci
I think even sex.SE didn't get so many complaints while it lasted

Q: Are multiple SE sites covering the same subject, with higher specificity, detrimental?

KeltariI found it hard to condense my question into a simple title and not sure it fully explains my question. I am not sure if this occurs elsewhere on SE, but I have a specific example: SuperUser covers general computer use, including Unix, Linux, and Ubuntu. Unix & Linux covers Unix, Linux, and Ub...

"When it comes to users, SuperUser is a behemoth." is quite rude.

Yeah, calling someone fat is rude

5:15 PM
@Rubiksmoose So it should be answered. I don't understand why it was closed. We should answer and say that no, scope isn't decided by SE. That would actually be a very useful answer to have around, I recently needed it to convince another user of the same point.

@terdon I would agree, actually.

I just voted to reopen. At the very least, the close reason is unfair, the user was clearly asking for input. They wouldn't like the input they would get, but still.

@terdon I've added my vote as well.
This is a thinly disguised rant based on your irritation that another site is not changing its policies due to your personal whims. You asked them to change, the voting on that question tells you it doesn't want to, that should be an end to it. In my experience such rants get downvoted, closed and then deleted. — Robert Longson 10 hours ago
^That, I suspect, was the actual logic for closing it.

Yeah, but we seem to yell RANT at the slightest provocation. The user was calm, civil and put forth arguments. Calling it a rant is uncalled for and rude, IMO.
I agree with the sentiment, mind you. I just don't see a rant.

@terdon Yeah we call out and shut down things as rants too often.

5:20 PM
yep :/

5:45 PM
@terdon That's definitely somewhere already
Make that some wheres
This whole thing is too messy. That's what we need to fix. This thing can be answered without giving ammunition to a ranter
I do agree though, that sometimes people just . . . downvote things

@M.A.R. If you can find it, let me know. I haven't found one and one of the CMs I asked couldn't come up with one either.
@M.A.R. I can live with the downvotes, but I do feel MSE is quite frankly abusing the closing system.

@terdon I'm pretty sure it comes up every once in a while that "who decides focus" and "are sites given any freedom to adapt and improvise"
@terdon closure usually doesn't stop discussion all that much IME, since people use comments anyway. If you doom something to a -10 score, for example, then you'd have nothing left but people piling on the popular opinion

@M.A.R. I thought so too. If you can find a good post explaining it (I found a bad one with nothing "official"), please share it. But bear in mind that since this is to convince someone that Meta (local metas) is where site scope is defined, so they don't currently consider Meta authoritative, if it's just a meta post it probably won't work very well...

It's not a real discussion, just a blizzard of nods
@terdon eh, probably something folks did in this case, I was talking in general

Q: Individual community preferences vs. SE network policy: who wins?

CHAOS team member Abby Miller responded by suggesting the proposal The ...

I win

@M.A.R. That might work as a dupe of the one from the medical site, yes. Doesn't help me convince a user that site scope is defined in meta and not set by SE though. :(

Well that settles that then lol

@JourneymanGeek since you locked [this]() post and we can't comment, you shall now be bugged. Please either reopen it so it can be closed as a dupe of meta.stackexchange.com/q/124911/203101, or just leave a comment pointing the user to that one. I think it should answer their question.

@terdon Missing the link there

@terdon well, I think if you, as a lvl. 100 SE wizard and a 100k'er network-wide, tell them that, and they refuse to believe you, there's not much else to tell them that would convince them
The only hope is if they turn back after having cooled down

Q: The future of meta.stackoverflow and meta.stackexchange

Q: Site autonomy and governance: community-driven democracy or benevolent dictatorship?

BenjolWe need to talk. We need to talk about StackExchange sites: about their autonomy, about governance. We need to sift through all the analogies that have been thrown around (democracy, policemen, administrators, overlords, etc.) and decide which ones are useful and truthful. Is StackExchange the...

> Next week is April Fools in many countries around the world. Traditionally, Stack Overflow goes all out with a big joke. Given the current climate we are taking a different approach, and giving you this year’s “prank” as more of an Easter egg. You’ll have the opportunity to check out something new, and to opt-in to the tongue-in-cheek feature if you feel like it.
