@JourneymanGeek: Well, it was shared in the mod. chat on the day it was posted - perhaps moderators made up a higher proportion of the early up-voters than of the late down-voters.
Another possibility is that it was viewed more favourably by the more frequent visitors to Meta SE, who would have read it & voted on it earlier than the less frequent visitors.
And another, of course, is that later voters were swayed by the critical answers & comments that had then been written.
