Do we need to continue featuring "an agreement?"

That's up to staff
We don't know if the agreement included featuring it for N period of time

Well I vote to remove the "featured" tag FWIW...

1:28 AM
@Rob FWIW with relation to your latest flag, we can't convert answers to comments, and there's a similar post to what is referenced on that on every meta. Having as a seperate question makes sense since staff do seem aware, and I will eat my hat if the OP of the other question isn't aware of it :D
(eventually. The awareness, not the hat eating)

Rob
1:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek it's convert question to answer. It (the new question) is feedback (an answer) to the other older question. Maybe this is the closest tool available, but I don't know if it converts the new question to an answer for the merge target (Statistics Announcement) or if it just banners it. --- I'm fine with whatever, it just seems helpful to do the same as the example offered.

@Rob No way to convert question to answer.
We can totally convert answers to comment but obviously the coffee hasn't kicked in

Rob
✔️
@JourneymanGeek BTW: Here is hat eating, as promised.

2:30 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Nope

Yeah, I read this and retracted my message.

I mistyped and felt it would be clearer to correct myself than edit, since I'd need to explain myself anyway

Also, since Winter Bash is over, maybe this should be unpinned?

[status:made-it-so]
....

Rob
Coincidentally I just updated the WB 2019 Hat thread, locking optional.

2:34 AM
eh, that probably shouldn't be needed
Unless someone decides to close as no longer can be replicated

I wouldn't penalize the author by closing the question (and disqualifying them from the asking days badges).

Rob
OK, but contributions will be NAA (forgeries).

Well, questions that get closed more than 60 days after being asked aren't considered "closed" for the purposes of the badges, so then it can be closed.

Meh, I'd let it be :D
there's no real point to it

Rob
✔️
Was it re-written well, in a neutral and non-inflammatory tone (considering the DVs it accumulated)?

2:39 AM
wait, you mean the 2020 thread?

In my view, "Winter Bash" doesn't exclusively refer to hats

Rob
WB2019 Hat Contest, linked a dozen lines above ...

3:02 AM
@Rob then no
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog hence me not saying the 2020 hat thread.

3 hours later…
5:48 AM
uhm.

A: Correct way to get rid of old unnecessary comments

marlin putnamIf you just choose to get rid of a single comment or document, you can do that from the project itself. Is it just me, or does this have nothing to do with SE?

6:18 AM
morning
also happy new years

6:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek Has nothing to do with SE

7:25 AM
Got a new support ticket assigned to me:
Think those question marks need help getting out of the boxes around them?
:D
Ticket body isn't any better... it happens only with one client, and not consistent. No idea if it's on our side or her side. :(

shakes the magic 11 ball

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog true, chat build is available in the lobby (rooms list), currently it's rev 2019.12.18.872

It blames unicode
@ShadowTheBurningWizard hm, that means there's revisions of chat... interesting

Yeah chat has its own codebase.
That's why changes in the sites not always applied to chat, e.g. image uploader.

Or stacks I guess :D

7:30 AM
They need to copy and paste, and sometimes it has dependencies and it becomes messy.
Isn't Stacks just for CSS? Never looked into it to be honest.
I still get confused when that word is used without full context, think it means the SE sites... lol

@ShadowTheBurningWizard and the broader theming engine I think

Still, no server side code there, and chat has such code too.

Well no, but that's something else I'm curious about :D

7:48 AM
kaboosh
(12 hours y/o off topic question deleted)

0_0
I deleted 2-3 this morning :D

yup
Always find one which escaped you though :D

lol
where?

Usually already with two del votes, so all is good. ;)

I'll tear it up like tommorrow's homework :D

7:52 AM
When it reach -8 it vanish from homepage, so makes sense it gets missed.

Ya, and probably came up when I slept :D

Most of my modding is from the front page and flag page

@JourneymanGeek mods never sleep, this is well known
they wait

Wearily

JAD
8:02 AM
hello
happy new year everybody :)

Speaking of wearily

How's ash these days

Oh man
He had one of his canines and a premolar removed
he's been hyperactive since he lost a ton of weight between diagnosis and when they could actually yank the tooth (there's some normal age related concerns about his kidneys)

The joys of walking into work and seeing a load of warning emails

@Magisch nah that's Jon Skeet
3
A: Jon Skeet Facts

Vivek1.Jon Skeet once debugged a program he never saw, He mailed his Russian friend saying "you forgot to call the update() method in the orders form" he was right 2.Jon Skeet once sneezed out came "LINQ" 3.He doesn't sleep he spins wait. 4.Compiler outputs are actually replies from E-mails to Jon ...

@JAD pffft so late
Come again in 1/1/2021

8:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek Here's hoping it all goes well

@Magisch he hasn't had a bedwetting incident since :D
so... probably

@JourneymanGeek sounds just like my son

though he currently has a military grade waterproof bedsheet :D
@ShadowTheBurningWizard Ash kinda is the sorta dog you didn't need to toilet train

JAD
military grade in that it shoots back when wetted?

8:14 AM
:D

As for kidney, you can take one from @M.A.R. he got spare. @Journeyman ;)

maybe he'll turn out to be one of those dogs that live to 25 or something

@JAD Its a military half-tent/groundsheet :D

JAD
ah

@JourneymanGeek good! :)

8:14 AM
So.. there's 4 grades of kidney failure

Well, bedwetting isn't about potty training.

a coworker's cat is nearing 18 this year

Ash is currently on grade 1

It just happens... happened to me too until pretty late age, nobody knows why.

got some meds to manage phosphate levels

8:15 AM
@Magisch wow
It's like 100 in human years or so, no?

Ash will be 15 in april :D

nice

I hope he hits 20.
(and he's probably going to be a family legend :D)

here's hoping
I know someone who owns a map turtle
apparently he expects to pass it onto his children one day

@Magisch there was a 18 year old at the dog park
some <redacted> gave him up at 11 cause "he was too old"

8:19 AM
yikes

New owners are serial adoptors. They tend to take lost causes.
there's also an old scottish gent who tends to adopt elderly large dogs
which are actually really hard to adopt out here

@JourneymanGeek Over the holiday vacation I got hooked on a youtube channel called Hope for Paws which showcases rescues of cats and dogs in the streets... there are a lot of such <redacted> <redacted> <redacted>s.

@Gimby not much gets me pissed off
that... gets on my nerves
(Ash was an adoptee. Though who adopted who is a bit of a mystery :D)

The pet always adopts the caretaker.

@Gimby ah well
We kinda accidentally adopted him, and I was away

8:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't believe in hell but I think there's a special place in it for people who get puppies and kittens and then give them up after 6 months to get a new one instead

so he's convinced I got adopted at the airport
@Magisch I think ash was with his old owner a month
he was a tiny scrawny thing

who gives away a puppy after a month!

@Magisch Some silly spoilt person who didn't ask her husband before getting a puppy.
A puppy is a responsibility for everyone ._.

@Magisch People who get a pet for their kids and then don't realise they come with such responsibilities as walking and cleaning and destruction around the house.

@Gimby naw, no kids.
@Gimby Ash for the 1 month we hadn't formally adopted him....
ripped apart the conduit. ALL the conduit...
I think he was a terror for a week :D
I have a scar on my foot from when he bit me.
and my brother has one
and my dad..
Also has a fear of heights.
cause his first owner put him on a shelf to keep him out of trouble
and he fell off.

8:26 AM
wtf, that's the first time I hear that

Possibly more than once.
Protip, the only way to keep a puppy out of trouble is to direct that energy the right way, and tire them out.
I had NO idea what I was doing either, but worked out he loved scent games more than fetch, so that worked. Also wasn't food motivated.

a shelf.....
dafaq

@JourneymanGeek what is it with people treating terrier puppies terrible

@Magisch they're... really high energy

our office dog's first owner used to yell at him whenever he made trouble in the first year, now the dog is deathly afraid of loud noises
and never barks or vocalizes

8:34 AM
@Magisch basically they're small, move fast and are smarter than some of their owners.
they're not great for apartments at first
My neighbourhood only works well cause its a bit of a hybrid set of developments with large open spaces

@JourneymanGeek so the polar opposite of golden retrievers
I remember my aunt's golden retriever when she was just a puppy was always extremely easy to handle and didn't cause any fuss

Also depends on the specific puppy
or dog. There were these folks with a quartet of westies
One of them was the boss. He would make sure the other dogs got on the back of the car, then would walk over to the passenger seat to be picked up and loaded in :D

:D
my aunt's dogs suffer from the "big dog thinking they're a small dog" symptom

ah lab syndrome :D

one of them is gigantic, like twice the size of a golden retriever (I dont know which kind) and thinks he's a puppy

8:50 AM
My grandma has a gsd like that. A plush coated one

JAD
hmm, my mom has a cross between a Berner Sennen and a Leonberger. She's massive
She can pretty much sit down on your lap with her feet still on the ground

Oh dear.
I've seen Bernese.
They're big and mostly muscle and fluff

JAD
Leonbergers are pretty much similarly built and fluffy

@JAD that is not nice to call your mom massive ...

JAD
@rene heh, I was wondering about that when I was typing it

9:02 AM
I had to read it twice to get what you were referring to ....
But I'm on one coffee so far
That doesn't help

9:16 AM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard I cannot guarantee the quality

I just came in and thought Journeyman was talking about Bernese people … still probably not entirely inaccurate.

@AdrianMole dogs are people. Sometimes the best people 🐶

No I'm bester

Well, in some of the bars I frequent back home, I've seen a fair few dogs hanging about.

my aunt's golden retriever is a reincarnated saint or something
I swear she has a sixth sense for brightening people's days

9:26 AM
... but, anyway, who stole all the hats? Should I raise a mod flag?

Winterbash ended
Adieu to hats

... and someone said somewhere there ain't gonna be a 2020 Bash - is that right?

@AdrianMole we probably wont find out till end of 2020

@AdrianMole tentatively won't have hats

... so I'll just go back to Badge-Hunting, instead.

9:32 AM
Hats are badges. Only temporary and hattier

10:19 AM
@M.A.R. surely better than average kidney!
!!/hats

@ShadowTheBurningWizard No such command 'hats'.

everyone had a good start into the new year?

>_>
I had a sandwich

@Magisch Meh.
The fireworks took too long, and stank too much so I had to shower before I could finally go to sleep... and I've already had a fight with mom again so...
Year still has to prove itself.

10:28 AM
I read this in Germany the fire killed lots of animals this year. :(
Fire in balloons, or something like that.
Such a balloon landed inside a zoo, and caused a big fire.

(home made bread, cheddar slice, pan fried halaumi cheese, more cheddar, chopped olives, more cheddar, more halaumi bread)
@ShadowTheBurningWizard erf. Sky lanterns.

Yeah, wishing balloons are banned here ... if they loose momentum/height, they can end up on flammable material and start a fire

they're banned in lots of places

We have a lot of reed covered roofs here

JAD
hmm, a monumental windmill from 1848 burnt down
@Tinkeringbell oh, I saw one fly/crash through our street

10:29 AM
IMO those who use those silly things must be sent to long years in prison, otherwise people will keep doing it.

JAD
ended up in a tree

@ShadowTheBurningWizard Thing is... they often crash a pretty ways away from the person who dunnit :)

@Tinkeringbell more the reason to send them to jail.

which is the point of a hot air baloon

What's the difference from shooting a gun randomly?
The bullet also goes far away.

JAD
10:30 AM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard makes it tricky to track down though

@ShadowTheBurningWizard much harder to work out who did it
when the evidence is magnificantly flammable

Anyway... Over there the fireworks went well, no casualties.

like that Roald Dahl story where a woman kills her husband with a frozen leg of lamb... and cooks and serves the evidence to the cops.

I hear the fireworks in Australia were something to see...

@JourneymanGeek Wait wuuut?

JAD
10:32 AM
hmm, that rings a vague bell

@Mithical hehe... 100% natural

"Lamb to the Slaughter" (1953) is a short story by Roald Dahl. It initially was rejected, along with four other stories, by The New Yorker, but was published in Harper's Magazine in September 1953. It was adapted for an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents that starred Barbara Bel Geddes and Harold J. Stone. Originally broadcast on April 13, 1958, this was one of only 17 AHP episodes directed by Hitchcock. The episode was ranked #59 of the Top 100 Episodes by TV Guide in 2009. The story was adapted for Dahl's British TV series Tales of the Unexpected. Dahl included it in his short story compilation...

JAD
@Tinkeringbell over where? :O

@JourneymanGeek security cameras
These days many big cities have those cameras, no?

@ShadowTheBurningWizard those are mostly launched from open spaces, parks, seasides.
cameras are mostly in built up areas

JAD
10:33 AM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard in the city centers maybe, not really in residential areas

@JourneymanGeek hmm... well, so offer a prize for those who will snitch on their friends.

JAD
that's probably still not enough evidence

When it will kill people, that would likely be what the police will do anyway.

Rob
The court is obligated to identify the tattler.

@JAD maybe not for 1st degree murder, but surely enough to send the person to prison.

JAD
10:35 AM
:shrugs: we're talking hypotheticals here, and I'm no lawyer/judge, so idk

@JAD Oh sorry, over here XD

!!/big coffee

@ShadowTheBurningWizard No such command 'big'.

Rob
10:36 AM
Should have ordered a grande.

Ariana?
Anyway, it's so 2019... 2020 is Billie Eilish!

Meh.

@Tinkeringbell I didnt participate in fireworks

Talking about famous singer, who is your favorite Israeli singer? @Mithical

I don't really like most Israeli music

JAD
10:44 AM
@Magisch me neither, much too expensive. Also enough neighbors that fire enough for both of us :P
I'm happy leeching of them
although it was pretty misty, so at some point there wasn't much to see anymore

@Mithical "most" means you still like something. No? ;)

@JAD We had almost no trouble with that... also... the neighborhood here usually pools some money and we have two neighbors that have turned fireworks into a biggest dick contest... Each year they seem to buy more and louder stuff (to the point where one of em ordered illegal stuff this year, thankfully that didn't arrive).

@ShadowTheBurningWizard you can probably find like three songs somewhere in here open.spotify.com/playlist/…

JAD
@Tinkeringbell for us it got to the point that it was not possible to see the houses on the opposite side of the street
20m of vision tops
probably more like 15

@Mithical nice... but can't even search for songs from Israel in that list. :(

10:50 AM
@Mithical based on what you send to the European Song Contest, I agree.

@rene which year?
The crazy female singer, or the one from last year? ;)

@rene I don't even know why we're in there. we're not in europe

Courtesy
Pity Votes
And probably wanting to keep in good terms with USA ;)

JAD
@Mithical didn't Australia recently participate?

*shrugs* I don't follow it

10:53 AM
@JAD yes
@Mithical that is our way to support your country ...

@rene this year there's a good chance this singer will represent Israel, what do you think?
She reached the finals last year but lost, she tries again this year.

@ShadowTheBurningWizard That needs to be a broadsword

JAD
idk, what narratives can we spin?

Rob
✔️

lol I can totally see her performing with actual sword
She's even more insane than Neta... :D

10:55 AM
Who's that?

@Mithical שפיטה

@ShadowTheBurningWizard I call victory and cancel the whole event.

okay never heard of her

Rotem Shefy (Hebrew: רותם שפי; born 1984), also known by her stage name Shefita (Hebrew: שֵׁפִיטָה), is an Israeli singer and voice actress. As Shefita, Shefy portrays an Arab diva, who has risen to fame by producing cover versions to famous rock songs like Radiohead's Karma Police and Nirvana's Lithium. Her cover renditions have an Arabic musical influence. Shefita was a contestant on Israel's Rising Star television show, in its 6th season, and competed to represent Israel in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. She came in at 3rd place in show's season final which aired on February 12, 2019. ...

JAD
hmm, speaking of ESC, Spotify just put up Hard Rock Hallellujah :D

10:56 AM
Now you did! @Mith ;)

JAD
which honestly is one of the few decent songs to come from the ESC IMO :P

Rob
Sing, with a sword

@JAD what's ESC?
oh... Eurovision
@Rob doubt she's singing. Can hear the gurgling even here.
:P

Rob
She has many talents.

11:12 AM
@ShadowTheBurningWizard I'm slightly curious. Might youtube that later :D

youtu.be/qjQ4lkHorwI?t=1154 -- Interesting views from 'non-se users' on what's happening with the whole thing...

@djsmiley2kindarkness Woah. That one misses the mark a bit ;)

well, that's because people don't know
and SE managed to nuke everything.
Just think it gives some perspective, as people often forget that everything isn't that obvious, unless you're actively involved.

@djsmiley2kindarkness Well not nuke everything...
But I guess the stuff that was nuked does provide the other side of what the agreement post states, yeah :/

Does "Rivers of Babylon" count as an Israeli song?

11:24 AM
@AdrianMole no idea... not familiar with it

@Tinkeringbell I can't watch because at work, is it worth bookmarking?

@Magisch Meh.. it seems to be about sites they're using, and it was just about 30 seconds of misinformation/misrepresentation of all that's happened in the last few months (you can't really summarize all of it, not even if you know all of it)... ended with 'just keep posting geeky stuff there'.

@Tinkeringbell what's the thrust of the 30 seconds?

@Magisch That Monica got de-modded no banned no de-modded over a CoC violation, then SE spoke to the press saying it's all Monica so they think the CoC change was all because of Monica, that Monica probably won't come back and then there's some jokes about Googling error messages and just keep posting geeky stuff.

gross

11:49 AM
Meh... I think I agree with dj. It shows how easy people can get confused over this whole mess
Unless they're deeply embedded in it.

That just shines a light as to quite how irresponsible SEs framing of the situation was
I really hope monica got more out of it then a milktoast apology written by lawyers

ideally enough that it raises questions at the next board meeting so that they hold SE to their own commitment to never have a repeat of something like this

Some may call me silly but I still trust them on that. There may be other mistakes in the future, and people may shout very loudly about how similar they are... but they won't be exactly the same.

mhm

11:58 AM
It's a bit like learning anything... when trying new ways to handle the same thing happening, preventing mistakes you've made before... you're bound to make other mistakes that may have a similar outcome or may look similar to the mistakes you've made before...

I don't have any view into their internals and neither do any of us so calling for resignations would be silly and misguided, but an institution-level postmortem with an analysis of how it was able to get this bad and some concrete remedial steps they've taken would go a long way
doesn't need to name names either just some proof that they understand exactly what went wrong and the gravity of it
