Did really around 10 mods resigned, because the SE retroactively changed CC-BY-SA 3.0 to CC-BY-SA 4.0?

@peterh no

@MadScientist Did they resign, because Monica Cellio was de-modded, because she did not like the CC-BY-SA change?
@MadScientist Or did they resign because there was yet another CoC change in the near future?

@peterh reasons behind the forced resignation are private, but the witnesses agree it was pretty nasty

All the resignations are linked in the post, and they all contain some explanation for the resignations. None of them have anything to do with the CC change

Monica hinted in her judaism.meta post, that it was about a CoC change. If I understood it correctly. Then she once got a lot of marshall and deputy badges, signing that she has no more diamond.
I think it is an indirect result of the CEO shift. What did Chandrasekhar before the SE?

8:08 PM
At this point I'm sorry for conflating CC license, CoC, and mod firing in my Meta question. My question was intended to ask about SE's vision for the company–community relationship which I saw damaged due to a lot of history, most recently CC change and the mod firing. It was only a secondary goal to make the wider community aware of the resignation wave.

This would explain, what the CMs are now trying to reach. And that would hint 1) is some "radical" ( mentionable ) change likely in the future 2) why this storm has break out

@410 It's not about being an ultimate source for anything IMO. It's about how they have helped people, and it would be bad if they were gone.

@peterh it is all private until SE makes an announcement, please stop speculating.

By your logic it doesn't matter if all except five or six SE sites go away. And, taking it to an extreme, it doesn't matter if most of the humanity that doesn't contribute anything meaningful to the world go away. Oof, that's a bit harsh, but I hope you see my reasoning from your reasoning.

They'd better announce soon, but available information says it will be a few weeks

8:11 PM
The problem is that without knowing, why was Monica fired, it is hard to get a point. There are rumors that the SE is not profitable, the investors will want their money.
@rene Okay. But I can google for Chandrasekhar. What is very likely, his task is to make the SE producing more money.

sounds reasonable.
@JohnDvorak maybe SE is taken by surprise by these reactions?
That wouldn't be the first time.

@amon Well, uh, how can I put this. I'm of course really sad that someone a lot of people (including me, when I got the chance) looked up to on how to do things right was so appallingly treated, but there's also this guilty but positive feeling of, hmm, validation to see and confirm for ourselves that our suspicions were correct. It's relieving because it removes doubt.

By "these reactions", do you mean the mass resignation, or that people would notice said resignation?

probably both

Obviously, sites where I would be lurking didn't overlap with hers, and I didn't work with her even remotely on moderating sites. That also has a big part in why this isn't such an overwhelming feeling for me, but also the confirmation of my own personal observations and suspicions.

8:16 PM
it's almost as if a large group of people was more than the sum of its parts

I won't be making rafts out of the ship's hull, but I'm on the lookout for nearby inhabited islands.

@AndrasDeak Nah, do you even math.

Objectively speaking, how many mods relative to the total amount have left?

I would probably look for where else I should vent and post my monologues. There's kinda a shortage of people speaking English fluently here, and I wouldn't want to lose the very useful skill of being overly annoyingly verbose.
@JohnDvorak A better question would be how much of the work they did, I guess.

Probably he is the new CEO: linkedin.com/in/pchandrasekar He is probably good in IT company management, but has little experience in community management. I suddenly understood, why the SE focused so hardly on the community management, and not so strongly to the IT.

8:19 PM
@M.A.R. dozen-post-long twitter threads

@peterh I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.

@peterh his career path is in the blog: stackoverflow.blog/2019/09/24/…

I mean, despite everything, there's the benefit of the doubt.
But it's a very corporate-y person chosen with a corporate-y decision to further corporate plans. (The negative connotations of "corporate" aren't strong here) I would be surprised if I notice a change.
I mean, it's gonna be that, unsurprising.
Predictable path towards a hopeful growth
Man I wish I was an RO.

@M.A.R. What is RO? Read-only?
@JohnDvorak Around ten, but most of them were the most well known ones.

@peterh Room Owner. I would have been able to peek at deleted messages' history

8:26 PM
@peterh As a percentage, I mean

@JohnDvorak The are around 600 mods, but most of them are lesser known, appointed mods of relative little betas. Gilles and Monica were very hardcore.

@JohnDvorak Don't we have, like, 500 mods.

I think the chance that the decision will be lifted, is quite high.

In other words, Gilles, for example, was the DenverCoder9 from XKCD to me. I read his meta belonging to 2011 or what, and gain insight on how to persuade people and how to moderate sites.
I mean no disrespect for the newer mods, but if there was a "supermoderator honorary volunteer awesome" title, then probably 50 percent of the ones that were around left.

I can't imagine any positive outcome if the SEinc doesn't retract the resignation or at least its stance to it

8:30 PM
@JohnDvorak Hard to put back shattered glasses in one piece eh.

A: Moderator Resignation Notice

Sara ChippsWe’re sorry to see you go. We understand there are some folks upset about the decision made this week. We aren’t going to share specifics out of respect for all individuals involved but this is a site reaching millions of people and we have to do what we believe fosters a spirit of inclusion an...

Official (? probably) response.

very official

It a company... a profit-oriented company. It is false to think, that they would not know, what are they doing. But it is also false to think, that their goal would not be the $ of the company.

poor Sara Chipps getting that toxic experience first-hand

Guess I don't need to live feed that one, BUT
Stack Overview ... great name for a fresh community ... — rene 57 mins ago
The world needs more Dutch people.

The resigned mods were not de-modded

8:36 PM
@peterh I don't believe anybody's still arguing with you

@peterh It's false to think we did not know that.

okay, guess I was wrong

And it's false to think caring about your community will necessarily go against your profit-oriented goal.
@AndrasDeak Hey I just swallowed hot chili, alright
A bunch of other things were false to think too but they involved mushrooms, Lord of the Rings, Obiwan and some miscellaneous things.

Q: Moderator resignation

GlenH7Effective today, I am resigning as moderator on Engineering and Software Engineering. I find that Robert Harvey's resignation expresses my thoughts more eloquently than what I would write, so I'll simply reference his post. It's been an honor, and I sincerely wish the communities well.

One more, for those keeping count

@peterh Gotta love bureaucracy... It'll take a while for them to be demodded.

8:40 PM
@PrincessOlivia Maybe they're hoping to get them back somehow?

If they hire Monica back, then there's a way

410
It takes someone to push a button, a CM most likely. And those are having a weekend.

Sara's answer doesn't in any way signal that they want to retain them anyway

410
Not the best of the weekends, perhaps.

8:43 PM
If they provide a really good reason (boilerplate doesn't count) for the firing, there might still be a way.

Honestly, yeah, there is a way

410
I don't think so.

But you should assume we're assuming based on the very few things that we know.

410
Monica's word carries greater weight than any amount of chips.

@PrincessOlivia As far I know, any CM can mod and de-mod anybody with some clicks. They only rarely do that.

8:44 PM
Maybe this'll be the turning point for the company to start listening to its community again?

@JohnDvorak nope

Apparently SE was already tumultuous before this, right. And this is more like the gas under a volcano exploding. I'm not making any rumors, but it was kinda obviousish people weren't happy about what was going on, CMs included.

I expect doubling down, for example "You see how they piled up on Sara Chipps? We should just pull the plug."
@peterh you're way off mark.

@AndrasDeak Let's hope not

@peterh That's, pretty much in gossip territory.
Let's talk about Hollywood celebrity dresses next.
@JohnDvorak I like the positive attitude. Honestly, knowing you (as much as I could have online behind all this screen thingies) I expected a more cynical reaction :p

8:47 PM
1 message moved to Trashcan

@M.A.R. Remember that unflattering leotard Beyoncé so desperately wanted off the Internet? She never did.

that's, uh, the Streisand Effect

Oh Em Gee

@AndrasDeak I know, but her facial expression is unforgettable. I haven't looked at the photo recently, and yet it's still clear as ever in my mind.

410
Judaism meta gets closer to the root cause than most.
In the political language, "diversity" means "conformity" - and siding with the aggressor instead of the victim, this is kind of behavior, which one can often find among narcissistic psychopaths. Their words simply do not match their actions. Don't try to understand them (for your own sanity), because there is nothing to understand - ze rak meshuggah. — Martin Zeitler 35 mins ago

8:56 PM
that was a somewhat unflattering leap in logic

plausible though, and SEinc should make sure to prove it wrong with actions.

@410 Eh, I dunno.
My brain doesn't wanna parse that.
But are we jumping to communist conclusions, because how is that going to help anything

Monica Cellio said "sinat chinam" in her meta miyodeya post. That means, "groundless hate". Other sources say, she was in conflict with another mod, and she was on the victim side. But the CMs de-modded she, and not the attacker. It is not known, what was the cause of the conflict, but they say, that it was baseless.

@peterh What other sources. She apparently disagreed with the new update to the CoC and explained her points in a mod-only room.
At least that's what I gathered.
You know, this hyper analysis is probably why it exactly was private.

I bet propagating speculation will not help here

Watching the public narrative diverge in real-time from even what little I know of the factual is an unsettling experience rife with déjà vu. Please be careful about levels of speculation. Drawing up swords can worsen a situation, particularly when, on some level, moderators are vying for popular support in the abstract without the ability to convey sufficient context.

Thus, my conclusion is this: the events escalated from a typical internet flamewar, what was over-reacted by a CM. His over-reaction was caused probably by that it is not known, how the CEO switch will affect his job obligatories.

there's discussion and there's discussion, nudge nudge wink wink
@peterh thank you for your conclusion.

@Aza Hi! There's no real divergence (I hope). Peterh has a way of, uh, jumping to conclusions.

@M.A.R. you know it takes two for an argument
(or more)

@AndrasDeak tango

user206222
9:03 PM
@M.A.R. There is, perhaps, more divergence than you might think, and it's not confined to this room.

@rene uuuh... marco?

@AndrasDeak My pleasure. And now, that I learned what I wanted, I also learned that this whole thing is far above me, and it is inside of a hierarchy what is 1) unpleasant to me 2) unavailable to me 3) unprofitable for me. There could be a moral reason to think on it, but in the lack of information, there is nothing to think about. So I stop it. I wish good luck for the good boys! I only don't know, who are they.

take care, but don't forget about the girls and everyone else

I'm not assuming intentions, and I'm not concluding anything for now. What I know is that, regardless of the nature of the disagreements and their severity, it's extremely unlikely for most people both online and real life, and especially me, to have aired disagreement as articulately and elegantly as Monica Cellio.
Most would more or less agree on the whole affair and how it might have been. Character consistency wasn't just for Game of Thrones.

"most" could still be wrong though

9:06 PM
There's nothing further to do constructively other than wait for a Monday.

that's never stopped us from chatting about nonsense

@AndrasDeak I guess, most people that happened to become aware of the situation

plus it's Monday in an hour

I have had very little interaction with them, considering the huge amounts that they have contributed to SE.
@AndrasDeak It's been for 37 minutes here
But it's established that I don't count

yeah, I vaguely recalled that you're to the East

9:08 PM
Kinda in the middle

I think it's a written law that half-hour time zones don't count

(Germany + India)/2
Which country was that, I think Bangladesh, that was FORTY FIVE minutes ahead of its UTC time

so hipster

Now that's a real headache.
At least I have Turkey to compare local times to.

9:25 PM
@peterh not correct. Only a select few people have diamond control - 3 people, at last count.

10:08 PM
I'd like to echo what @Aza said:

I can't comment on the reasons behind the departure - though Monica's post on Mi Yodeya should clear any confusion up. I really don't want folks going down the wrong chain of reasoning here, and I feel like there's a heck-ton of speculating that's not based on any facts at all. It's just going to hurt all parties involved - and their are many, many different folks/views involved here.

for what it's worth it's hard to base speculation on facts without many facts, but I get your point ;)

There are several days worth of chat transcripts about this issue in TL, even mods have a hard time keeping up with the facts in this case.

Yeah, I sympathize. It's . . . not an ideal situation. :p I assume that things will be clearer on Monday. Right now, Monica's post is the best source of info (though of course bear in mind that that's only one person speaking their side of things).
Also, yeah, what Mad Scientist said. . .

in The Nineteenth Byte on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 17 mins ago, by Riker
don't push other mods about it probably

Outrage is an undiscerning tool. Surgical when used correctly, but much like a scalpel, it can do a lot of harm in the wrong hands. Lending someone yours should be done with caution and with honest information. It's a complex enough situation that I'm uncertain most moderators have access to it.

10:12 PM
It's best to just wait and see what happens, I suppose

1 hour later…
11:18 PM
@ArtOfCode Wow, thanks! It seems, Shog is one of them. Who can be the other two? Cartaino and Jon Ericson?

11:29 PM
@peterh Shog, Jon, Tim
