6:00 PM
@TravisJ And that could be cause the rest of the network actually needs a voice

And the rest of the network, and their meta collective, vastly outnumber the users at MSE.

and getting listened to is important

It has a voice.
An all too loud one.

@TravisJ that of course, assumes that folks only work through MSE

And now, the result of that loud voice drowning out the main driver of success is taking its toll.

6:01 PM
@TravisJ erm. Meta also kinda gets ignored.
And well, for a good chunk, folks focused on SO no matter what we said
That's fine. Untl, well, it wasn't

I am very familiar with meta.

I mean, we got told, this thing'll work, and that means good things for the rest of the network
a few times

They focused on SO because changes there were pushed network wide for the most part.
If it worked at scale, then it would work for the rest of the network.

@TravisJ with somewhat less input from anyone else
One of the pretty critical things I try as a mod is to make sure things that matter to, say SU filters down from meta.se to my site and the community
and that's trickier with a SO focus

When the entire exchange has that focus, then there is no SO focus.
Which is apparent now.
SO is just a tool that the rest of the exchange can use to drive traffic to its otherwise low traffic areas.

6:05 PM
@TravisJ actually - there's also the recovery from the previous troubles and trying to get the pool of staff back up
@TravisJ eh, that's a very SO chavinistic point of view

LOL

Not everyone gets to the network through SO
and not everyone is a dev

It is a view forced on me at this point.
Not everyone... a vast majority.

Everyone is a dev deep inside

^

6:06 PM
No one has ever said "SO doesn't matter"

It isn't 100% 0% though.

And I don't think we should/could take away resources from SO

It is the continuous "SO matters too much" which has led to a degradation.

But the other communities kinda matter too

They do. And there has not been any pushback on that.

6:07 PM
@TravisJ and that's a viewpoint that the powers that be were pushing for ages
@TravisJ actually
there's tons.

However, SO just sits there and does its own thing because there is a lot of work to do.
There is no time to monitor how damaging the overall outlook that the rest of the network matters and it needs more priority.

uhm

The bar of priority has drifted too far from SO at this point.

I cannot agree with that

That is because you aren't familiar with it.

6:09 PM
@TravisJ and you are clearly rather unfamiliar with the rest of the network

The evidence is present, just look at any of the discontent at mSO or the issues with content rates at SO.

@TravisJ that's MSO though

"content rates"

literally all the issues there are on SO

Not really.

6:11 PM
So, I'm unsure how that leads to "SO is being neglected, because the rest of the community is drawing away attention from it"

The rest of the exchange exhibits problems that came and went at Stack Overflow as it grew. At scale, those problems are solved, so it is just going through phases at times for the rest of the exchange. However, what should be clear is that Stack Overflow itself faces unique challenges that you will not find anywhere else on the exchange.

Like apparently having its main page turned into a landing page for other products

Ever heard of the phrase "last straw"
This isn't just one thing. It is a culmination.
I have been talking about it here for quite some time.

@TravisJ I don't get where that comes into "other sites don't matter"
SO's huge, sure
but you're basically saying the rest of the network can go hang cause SO's got problems

I never said that.
Nope.

6:15 PM
> There is no time to monitor how damaging the overall outlook that the rest of the network matters and it needs more priority.

I am saying that focusing too much on the other sites to the point where SO languishes is taking a toll.

But there's literally no focus on us
Its gotten a bit better, but that's ore a general realisation that stuff got pretty bad
and here's the thing
We kinda mostly run things with very little attention from SE
And often when we go "it would be nice to have more X", its stuff shared between everyone, SO included
SO - I complain about the new SO landing page? I did the same thing for SU's design, in a very similar way. For most part the critique was in the interests of a lot of the things I felt fundamental to how SO and SE do things.
SU dosen't benefit, or MSE. It was just the right stand to make.

Yeah, but the problems you experience are mostly already solved because of SO driving FR as well.
For a long time too.

I'm not that sure about that

SU quality of life improves from the work done to make SO run smoother.

6:21 PM
A lot of features/dev time was SO first

SO experiences a MONTH of SU activity per day.

and once again, no one says anything about wanting to take away resources from SO the Q&A site
@TravisJ once again though... and?

And SU is super important, so don't get me wrong, but also don't expect that there isn't benefit from the features that work at SO there.

@TravisJ how do we from "This is terrible and I'm glad the rest of us don't have it" to "SO dosen't matter"
No one really complained about SO being the shining city on the hill, until well, the issues last year
SO's pretty important, else I wouldn't have gone on MSO and posted
but dismissing everyone else is just... kinda aweful

I never said that it went to "SO doesn't matter".
I said that the priority has gotten too low and there are problems.
It also isn't dismissive to say that there needs to be more focus, I am not saying no focus to other places. That would be extreme.

6:27 PM
@TravisJ and that's not because of the rest of the network

As for the issues with your post, fine, talk about the landing page. That was the discussion afterall.
However, saying that the problems we have are because of the SO teams, SO Docs, etc. product pushes is just flat out wrong.

@TravisJ actually I didn't mention teams
I mentioned docs cause it didn't succeed

As well, noting that SO is just one site of many, and that the rest of the network is luckily unaffected, paints the rest of your post as disingenuous.

I mentioned careers because it was at the heart of the issues SO had previously

😐 i thought his post was quite clear and well written.

6:29 PM
It was clear and well written.

@TravisJ I don't think I can speak for SO
and the term "infected" was kinda used pretty inteionally
however that word is spelled, its 2 am

It clearly displayed an attitude that I disagree with.

@TravisJ Oh, the tone was pretty similar to one I used sucessfully

That is just a manifestation of the issue I am raising here though.

i don't see a problem
so you... disagree with an opinion.
:shrug:

6:30 PM
I didn't come here to discuss the post.

A: Rollout of new network site themes

Journeyman Geekstatus-completed Super User As a long term user, and a moderator on Super User, I'm pretty frustrated with the approach taken, and as a lot of folks pointed out, we got stuck with what's basically a beta theme. I'm frustrated, and actually a little angry with how this turned out, and I actuall...

@TravisJ the point there though was the emotive language

41 mins ago, by Travis J
It kinda seems like the rest of the network is just using Stack Overflow as a work horse and only paying attention to everything else. It is truly disheartening.

@TravisJ I disagree with that totally

As a beneficiary of the work horse, I can see why.

6:32 PM
i don't think it's necessarily being ignored, it's simply being abused.

I agree @KevinB
Perhaps "only" is a little too strong of a word to use.

this tool we've spent years building/curating (voluntarily) is being used to push for profit agendas.

@TravisJ or that we only see SO as a thing that exists to provide for the other sites

However, it does drive the point stronger than "not really"

6:34 PM
@Aibobot Yeah, it feels that way.
@Aibobot It really begins to feel like that is the case if you are at SO.
@KevinB I don't mind that the site is used for profit. Like, at all. But when it starts to have a negative impact on the site, on the ability to use it, and on the community base; that is where it gets troubling.

@TravisJ I kinda 'work' with a lot of people across the network. I've literally never heard this

@Aibobot Shocking.
Again, "beneficiary".

@TravisJ including SO folks
Actually I found that post cause a SO regular talked about it

for example, i was all for Docs, just wasn't very happy with what it ended up being. it was a tool for the community to use to better the community. Jobs i'm ok with, it's free for the community to use, and costs for businesses to advertise on, that's fine. It's helped a number of people.

So if someone else held that viewpoint, that we see SO as only something to benefit from I'd have heard it
@KevinB Well - essentially my issue isn't with them specifically

6:39 PM
@Aibobot Why? Because you are in touch with a user or two in chat?

Teams is... well, not for the community, it's a separate thing entirely designed to generate content that specifically isn't for the community. I have no problem with it existing, or ads being placed for it, but i'm just tired of seeing it everywhere i look.

But rather that significant amount of resources were drawn away from Q&A

It is a theme that is represented often when the overall network is discussed.
You wont see that in times where the actual site itself feels like it is under pressure though.

I'm fine with teams. I'm just unsure that totally hiding Q&A on the main page for a new user is a good design pattern

Because people are too busy pointing there fingers at the really glaring problem right there, and not at looking at the overall broad picture.

6:40 PM
@TravisJ I kinda talk to a lot of people

No one even noticed prior to publishing that this would effect SO QA? Really?
That is a very large problem.

As it is, in the left menu i can't completely get rid of it without writing custom, flimsy css

@TravisJ that's EXACTLY what folks are wondering

or getting rid of the menu entirely

@Aibobot Yeah, but why would it matter if SO gets bothered? That is the outlook which leads to this type of blunder.
MSE in generally does a good job at representing the issues of the overall exchange. MSO in general, has absolutely no CM presence.

6:42 PM
@TravisJ I'm not quite parsing that

It is not surprising that this type of thing happened, because of that.

@TravisJ getting a CM presense back on MSE is an ongoing task
Its not easy

eh, i don't think them posting about this change and collecting feedback would have made this situation any better

There is a CM presence at MSE.

Folks complain we're toxic and scary
We've been working on it

6:43 PM
people would have responded negatively, and it would have happened anyway.

+ one of the newer CMs is a MSE regular

@KevinB No, not like that. As in, to drive discussion and support posts.
@KevinB Not to say "here is the change", but to be active in general ongoing posts.

@TravisJ I don't think that not having a CM presense on MSO is unhealthy

Just, overall activity.

but there's a bunch of work to get it back there
I guess a good question is what's keeping them away

6:45 PM
@Aibobot 100% disagree.
I could not disagree stronger with that statement, and sentiment.

@TravisJ let me rephrase.

downvotes

You need a CM presense on MSO
that double negative was too confusing
@KevinB we have them here too

Okay, that's my bad.

on mse? we do, but they cost you

6:46 PM
@TravisJ the question is what keeps them away, and how you address it

they don't get thrown around like freebies
many people can't even cast them due to the 125rep req

@Aibobot The question?
What question?

@TravisJ honestly? MSE had and has a lot of pain points
and we're constantly working on them
So - a critical thing, crown jewel or not, is to work out what's keeping folks away
and trying to find that balance

Yeah, and MSE, as noted, generally represents the rest of the exchange.
MSE has a lions share of CM activity though.

So, I emptathise

6:47 PM
That's been touched on a few time by CM's

but there's no easy solutions

as far as why they're participating less... see if i can find it

@TravisJ MSE is about a safe a space as there is
Well, not really
but its kinda a work in progress
but we do have the advantage of really good feedback from, well, everyone.

Good, well, you work on MSE, and make sure all the CM's do too, and we will just languish at SO.

(as mods)
@TravisJ I'm not sure what I can say to help there
MSE had those issues too
heck, even this chat did
We still have a ton of pain points to work on still
and we as a broader community, not just mods or staff

6:50 PM
What I am saying is, while you work on that, if SO declines or loses its ability to drive the entire exchange, then it wont matter what you worked on.

Well, I'm not sure what can be done about that

It has already lost 25% of its questions asked per day. Answers per question are at an all time low. Abandonment is a REAL issue. And constant blunders only make these issues worse.

yeah i can't find it, and won't put words in people's mouth

@Travis I just read @Journey's filler-filled meta.SO post and I think you're putting too much emphasis on a little paragraph in the middle.

._.
Its not filler. Its colourful

6:57 PM
Of course everyone here already knows SO should be the main drive. Journey's beef is probably because other sites are excluded, not that SO is included.
@Aibobot I was reading a sentence, and just when it was starting to roll smoothly, you inserted a random "Well" or "erm" in the middle.

Oh
also I see caesar said they'd review it. Win
@Marshmallow bit of a pet peeve, yes
but also in terms of "public Q&A" not purely being SO

I also have the same impression at this very moment that things got shitty when the Docs drama started and stuff, but not sure if it's association fallacy or it really was because of those.
The first instances of SO U SUK I remember are from then
As in, regulars saying that

@Marshmallow that's a narrative I'm unhappy about too

Not outsiders yelling at regulars.
Sad doggy

What I've always felt is other products (other than Q&A) shouldn't take resources from Q&A
I am grumpy over how careers ended up shaping up or not - SO lost quite a few awesome folks

7:02 PM
@Aibobot hmph. I think one of those first ever mottos of SE was "we shouldn't be everything, but the best at what we do"

That's a good one

Careers? What about Careers? I ignored it entirely
Still ignoring it.

lol
Teams and enterprise? I'm enthusiastic to an extent
the things done there go into Q&A for most part. We've got more eyes

No seriously, what was so dramatic about Careers?

ooh. that's a sensitive subject
@Marshmallow apparently it was expected to be a massive hit
it wasn't an abjuct failure, but it didn't perform to expectations
Now I'm trying to remember where I heard that
probably

7:12 PM
the few times i tried to use it... it didn't give useful results. but i also probably live in an area where there aren't many businesses using it.
Only once have i seen a jobs ad for something local, and it was for a business that had already reached out to me directly

@KevinB critically though
its an insanely competitive and crowded market
SO has the brand recognition I guess
but you're up against... oh everyone

tbf though i haven't needed a job search tool in a decade
:shrug:

Which is why I wasn't fond of that as the company's focus

I'd rather things that are built for the community, that have both a free version for individuals and a paid for teams. but what "things" could be built that haven't already been done better elsewhere?
Docs was a great candidate for that IMO
and still is

@KevinB well, docs could have been
@KevinB there's nothing more dangerous than a solution looking for a problem
the original SO was built around a clear idea of what was needed
Docs lacked a compelling elevator pitch
what was docs? How was it useful?
Actually true of google wave too
its cool, potentially useful, but what is it?

7:19 PM
we tried and tried to get docs purpose defined

Docs resulted in a tangible increase of question quality.

repeatedly
but it was always left as lets just see what it becomes
which made moderating it a nightmare

@KevinB therein lies the problem

Docs had issues with organizational structure, and the stress points played out in different ways. It tried to represent a graph with a hierarchy and failed.

The purpose I invisioned for docs was it being designed around being used in place of existing canonicals. A place we could link commonly asked questions to that guided the user through what they were doing wrong and how to fix it.

7:22 PM
Yes.

but it ended up being more of a.... regurgitation of official docs, which makes sense when you look at what it was called.... "docs"
and something like that would be useful for more than just the public Q&A

This has been discussed at length though.

more than just SO as well
lol

I think a lot of people agree that Docs had a good chance at being great but it didn't quite pan out for one reason or another.
I doubt they will go that route again, or at least not for years.
The current direction though, it feels disheartening.

using it for canonical though has a particular problem. would it feel better to the user if they were pointed at a guide, or if their post was just answered.
almost every time, the latter

7:27 PM
I am 50 50 there.
The answer will never live up to the canonical. But since it is hand catered, it provides a better first step.
I think that the outlook towards improving the preview or linking of duplicates allows for a merging of the two issues you raise. A canonical example, with a catered explanation of how it fits in.

would also be nice if we could somehow identify canonical QA pairs
but that's a big headache waiting to happen

30k privilege
similar to protect
increases search weight by +5, on use squashes at least one spammer, canon posts require -2 duplicate votes if they are the target
half joking
Anyway... I don't know what else to say to voice my discomfort. Thoroughly disappointed right now. Maybe it will pass.

i'm kinda torn. like, i feel like SO is going in a direction that will be more helpful for the community at large... but it's in a direction that i'd not like to be a part of. it's weird.

1 hour later…
8:33 PM
@AaronHall you still an SO mod?
I need some chat messages moved to bin

@Mgetz just mod-flag the messages and any mod that is around will handle it

@rene already did, room owner dismissed it since it was a conversation with them that went waaaaay unproductive

Oh, okay.
RO's are known for their unproductive conversations

particularly in the c++ lounge...
to be fair I should have walked away earlier, but I was trying not to flag it

I'll move along, nothing to see there

8:43 PM
it just needs to send the whole thing to bin and pretend it never happened

"pretend"

not everything needs more action

We need more action!
@rene There was this RO in this room called so-close-almost-there-reviewers. He was unproductive as heck.

yep, saw him. Best ignored. Works for me.

room owner having unproductive conversations? I'm somewhat of an expert on that...

9:20 PM
ETA until the lounge gets closed again?

9:44 PM
@JohnDvorak unlikely?
it's pretty dead these days and the conversation would have cut off earlier if I had just flagged and walked away

<tinfoil-hat>Anyone suppose that SO is merely a public demo for the purpose of establishing platform familiarity and brand-awareness for private sale of the platform, i.e.: enterprise? It might make sense how little attention the public Q&A product seems to get from our vantage point... enterprise users don't need the same things we're asking for because they don't operate at a comparable scale. So, development time is spent where it will be profitable...</tinfoil-hat>

Enterprise didn't exist for years

@canon hm not really

I remember someone mentioning that enterprise was ridiculously lucrative. It may have been Shog. Though, I have no sense of how profitable it is against advertisement across the public sites. :P

SO didn't even realise there was demand for private q&a

9:56 PM
Maybe not at the beginning... but they certainly know now. To the point where they have two different products, Enterprise and Teams.

@canon here is the confusing thing. We're seeing and hearing fairly good things off the community team
Then a whammy we didn't expect
Mod tooling is getting a ton of attention, which is nice

@Stijn :/

@JourneymanGeek What?

@JourneymanGeek I was out of the loop the past few days. Did I miss some newly declared commitment to mod tools? /snoops meta

think they said something about it a month or so ago
today they released it

10:23 PM
You missed a new homepage 🏡

@ShadowTheCurlyBracedWizard yeah, I'm reading the meta post; it's hilarious.

11:04 PM
@SonictheBracketedHedgehog in general
@canon oh it's been happening a while

11:17 PM
Oh perfect timing

@JourneymanGeek No, I mean, what "whammy"?
It would be nice if you check which message it's a reply to.

11:36 PM
@SonictheBracketedHedgehog it's not a specific whammy
It's the idea of a whammy
