Not really "fewer HNQ" since it will always take the top 100 hottest questions, but the current formula will prefer questions with more steady hotness

Fewer for a given site

Let's observe the effect first

At least it’s easy enough to pull the numbers from data.se outdoors.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1456/8794

Not a problem if we really want to showcase the best question, since I have once removed a bad HNQ question on a site which made me questioned "why the heck this Q&A got upvoted so much..."
*graduated site with less than 50 visible active users

12:47 AM
Ugh, someone asked a really interesting question and, as I was looking up the answer reading research papers from the 70s to track it down, they deleted it.
Why do people do that kind of thing? I mean if someone found out what the answer was, why wouldn't they just self-answer? Deleting their question is silly.

@CharlieBrumbaugh Nah. The max age is 30 days, so we've shortened the total period by 8 hours... or 1/3 of a day... so that still leaves 29-2/3s days of eligibility. There's a max amount of time on the HNQ of 3 days but that doesn't start until the question enters the HNQ list, so there's no impact due to minimum age.

Edit history highlights the changes in ad strategy. "it's in our best interest to keep ads high-quality and relevant" is no more. Also, "not relevant to your community" is replaced by "inappropriate".
3

user302202
"We also don’t accept rich media like animated ads, expandable ads, or video" is gone as well.
4

wooow
I really hope they won't display it to logged on users.

Privileged users have "reduced ads" privilege

Yeah but for how long?

For as long as they want. It's on SO though

1:14 AM
Don't other sites have that privilege too?
At least on Information Security, I rarely see ads.

The privilege is there only for sites which have ads enabled. i.e. there's no privilege on Maths.SE because they don't have ads.
(I just refer to SO because it's the first site that comes to mind)

Ugh, I don't know if there will be big riot or not due to national election on tomorrow...

2 hours later…
6:01 AM
@NoDistractionWizard what site?

6:11 AM
Heh reading this only now. So it all started with a bug. Who says such bug won't happen again? Who says others didn't abuse the bug, put some backdoor, and now just wait patiently until it's forgotten and they can use their new powers?

Rob
My main question is... how did a vulnerability on a dev server impact the production servers?

If I'd have to guess I'd say privilege escalation

Rob
Sounds suspiciously like their dev instances are hosted on the same machines as the production instances

Most companies don't seperate dev and prod as much as would be ideal

@Rob of course they are

6:14 AM
@ShadowWizard They probably hired some forensics audit firm

@ShadowWizard Indonesia.SE

@NoDistractionWizard hmm.... well here in Israel we are divided between those who follow and support our current PM and those who want him to step down and hate him. It boils for years but no riot, just people cursing each other on social media.
What's your case in a nutshell?

Pistachios.

yummy
@Magisch they did, but she didn't reveal which firm
Also.... such firms are a risk, see what happened to Facebook.
If you give them access to private information, they can easily abuse it themselves.

6:29 AM
@ShadowWizard err... People who don't accept the election result and just want to watch the world Indonesia burn?

> No leaks were found. All the private data is now stored safely on our own server, you don't have to worry any longer.
@NoDistractionWizard oh that's not good

Rob
7:05 AM
Hmmm, someone just deleted all the 'Rep 1 questions' on Meta; previously I've seen them remain for a while.

@Rob probably a mod came by

@Rob I've been doing that every day when I wake up since I was modded here :P

waffles

time for stroopwafels
with extra stroop
and extra wafels

7:17 AM
@Rob all? There were only two, at most. I nuked a 9 hours old one, which had 2 del votes already. :)

@ShadowWizard Yep, history says you're right ;)

8:18 AM
I've done what I can on that algorithm post @ShadowWizard

8:41 AM
@Magisch It would be quite easy to fool most forensics firms.
Depending on what level of access they got, at least.
@ShadowWizard Probably depends on whether or not they got a shell, or just a generic privileged account that can do nothing more than a few moderation tasks.

@rene pointless if question isn't edited... but it's too late now, it won't get back from -8. Feel sorry for OP, but they can ask again if they read the comments at all.
@forest if SE wants a proper in-depth investigation they should give that firm full access, otherwise it's totally pointless anyway.

Oh I meant the attacker.
Yeah the firm would need to have pretty good access to investigate.

I also wonder what SE can tell those 250 users whose private info was compromised? It's not like they can or should change IP address.
(or email address for that matter)

"sorry lol"

8:47 AM
Most likely the attacker wasn't here to get that personal info.
Seems more probable that it was recon, or they were just curious.

@forest oh thought you replied to my "firms are a risk" message. lol

Nah the Who says others didn't abuse the bug, put some backdoor, and now just wait patiently until it's forgotten and they can use their new powers? part.
If they got a shell, they could have escalated privileges and put in a backdoor.
Dunno how easy that is on Windows. Only ever messed with *nix.

Well they gave themselves employee access, not just mod, so it's a possibility.

Where's the backdoor in the Tavern?

Is employee access more than just super moderation powers?

8:50 AM
@NoDistractionWizard There is none. Makes it easier to trap people here ;)

Also, wonder if they'll ever tell us who this person is?

Like can they execute commands or directly query the database?

looking for @nicael

@ShadowWizard If the person had more than two brain cells, we'll never know.

@forest of course

8:50 AM
It could be one of us!
@ShadowWizard I see. Then without an integrity check on the files, they could have easily established persistence. Give me access and I'll flash the BIOS itself. :P

Behind the backdoor is full of Smoke Detector instances O_O

@ShadowWizard for public shaming?

So we can trade 0days, duh.

@ShadowWizard at the very least, it's not easily identifiable.

If the guy used Tor or even the crappiest proxy, we'll never find out.
If he's dumb enough to use his home IP, he deserves to be shamed.
inb4 it's some 7 year old kid pounding on the keyboard
Some screen lock program actually got bypassed that way. :P

8:56 AM
@forest If it's a 7 year old kid, it's impressive and someone should take the effort to properly educate them :)

@rene shame?? Fame! :D
The One Who Hacked Stack Overflow and Wasn't Caught for Weeks

We can keep an eye on the Hall of Fame ...

I feel like being watched...
Perhaps just my imagination...

lol
@Tinkeringbell maybe @forest can adopt such a talented kid :P
With her education, they can become a really good hacker. :D

9:03 AM
We need to get more kids into hacking.
DEF CON has a bunch of projects for kids, which I find really awesome.
I wonder how long before Stack Exchange has "sponsored answers".
Basically just spam but locked so it can't be deleted.

@ShadowWizard The responsible thing (tm) would have been to report the bug that allowed you to get in as soon as you've verified that you got in

That's not as fun though.
That's what people should reserve for high-quality, open source projects.

ethics aren't (or shouldn't be) optional
if you mess with software instead of reporting a bug, you're a black hat hacker and should be held criminally liable as much as possible, imo.

You're thinking of grey hat.
A black hat hacker does it only for money or to cause damage.

Too many hats

9:12 AM
Plus, holding a hacker "responsible" just creates more grey hats. :P

point is, I think nobody can claim to act ethically if they discover vulnerabilities and use those to mess around or damage instead of reporting them to be fixed

But was this hacker messing around or doing damage, or just exploring?

Well, they accessed user personal data

@Magisch but we can't know what they did with it.

That might be as easy as clicking on a vague "more information" button right next to someone's name.

9:14 AM
of 250 people?

They are curious. lol

Why not? "More information - last 250 users" or something.
I mean, I've dug around sites like that.

Also, with that level of access, they could run a script to get info of thousands, at least.

But I never kept any of the information, just looked around out of curiosity.

still unethical imo

9:14 AM
@ShadowWizard If "employee access" is what it sounds like, then they could have trivially dumped the entire database, password hashes and emails and all.

@Magisch Of course, but not criminal. Yet.

Might be, depending on the laws in your jurisdiction
I know you can actually do time for less here, for instance

It's technically criminal in some jurisdictions, but I don't think it's unethical.
It's like peeking into open shades.
At least, that's the excuse the FBI uses. :P

lol
FBI is using third party malwares to hack into phones, yeah.

I think the first step would always be reporting the vulnerability
reflect on that, as software developers, you'd like if people told you instead of using the bug

9:16 AM
@Magisch You don't understand the excitement that comes about when you stumble upon a bug that gives you extremely privileged access.

@Magisch I also like complete bug reports though.

Indeed, and nothing says "holy cow, we need to secure our shit!" like a breach.

@Magisch think that's what the first "hacker" did, when he logged in as Jeff. No?

We should be glad the hacker didn't do more.
For the record, I blame SE for poor practices for mixing dev and prod.

@forest Meh, they could at least fix some bugs. :(

9:19 AM
Maybe they did. :P

@forest Do you know that? I used to be the guy that joined a minecraft server and poked it for unsecured admin access

Never got into Minecraft. Don't know what a Minecraft server is.

@forest A server for people playing Minecraft? :P
A gameserver? :P

@Tinkeringbell I mean "I can get CM access by repeating these steps: $description" is fairly quick to prompt a fix, no?

9:24 AM
Don't tell me you never tried to hack one, @forest :P

Well I mean, I didn't know that Minecraft was a multiplayer game.

@Magisch Probably ;) If you can prove those steps work and give you the same access as a CM ;)

The community version of the server software that allows for plugin and mod usage that most minecraft servers use (used to be buckit) has some "interesting" security defaults

@Magisch I don't see why. Someone in the DMZ reported an XSS issue and it took many many months for him to even get a response.
@Tinkeringbell Never have.
I mean maybe if I played the game, but as it is, I have no need for whatever currencies or items you can get in a Minecraft server by stealing them.

@forest Boring. Even I cheated on Neopets ;)
Oh, I meant games in general ;)
Not just Minecraft.

9:27 AM
hm
I mean I've used Gameshark/Action Replay before if that counts. :P

Oh, I cheated on Survive! Mola Mola

@forest I think it counts. I used an r4 card for my DSi, and then had a program on my PC to manipulate the pokémon games, this seems similar?

yep
Though you could input the codes directly from the GBA/NDS.
I actually still use one so I can hack around. Don't have anything newer than the Nintendo DS. Don't need anything newer either. I like it as it is.

@forest Sounds fun. My brother also was pretty good at using something called 'Ape' to do something similar, but for Zoo Tycoon. We had furbies walking around in our zoos :P

I did use a cheat for pokemon emerald back when
Because I was sick and tired of grinding for perfect EV ones

9:31 AM
and using/creating Trainer apps...

@forest I have a DSi and now a 3DS, but I shouldn't have bought the last one. I almost never used it. the DSi is now used as an alarm clock :|

I never cheated to make the game easier, just to see what weird things can be done. I loved all the weird Mario Kart DS cheats that would bug the game out badly.

And I was trying to make a specific comp that relied on a perfect EV/DV sweeper type of one specific pokemon that was relatively rare to catch to start

Or the online cheats that didn't give you an advantage, but let you pick tracks that were otherwise not enabled for online play. I loved that.
Yeah EV/IV grinding can be a huge pain.
I don't really deal with that. I just catch whatever I have (and pay a little bit of attention to its Nature), and level it up to level 50.

@Magisch I just really disliked not being able to catch everything. And I didn't have the patience for trading.
That's also why I stopped playing those games, as soon as they limited storage so you couldn't keep everything, and you had to store stuff online (and pay for it, IIRC)... I was out.

9:33 AM
"Catch em all" (except these 25 rare ones you can only get at nintendo direct events or via trading with people who have the other edition)

Yeah in fact

Q: How many Pokemon can be obtained only in Emerald?

forestHow many Pokemon can one have in Pokemon Emerald, assuming no trading, no event Pokemon, no cheat devices, and no exploiting arbitrary code execution glitches? In other words, if one were to be locked alone in a room with only a GBA and Emerald cartridge and as much time as they need to play, h...

I asked that just so I could know exactly how full I can make my Pokedex!

I think I heard they'll be making some amibo exclusive in the new pokemon game

Amibo?

gaudy plastic figures that come with exclusive ingame rewards for nintendo games
usually expensive as hell because manufactured in limited quantity

I haven't followed the game since gen III (and a little of IV).
After that, it just went to shit. I mean can't you get like, 3 free legendaries in the store before you even start the game? And don't they take like, half a dozen great balls to catch even the most extreme legendaries?

9:40 AM
!!/pokemon

@ShadowWizard No such command 'pokemon'.

@JNat a cross-site spammer that re-uses their network profile: stackexchange.com/users/13526031/simpliv?tab=accounts

I see SE post one-box link's color as... green?
hmm, maybe it follows the site's chat theme...

Which close reason should I choose?...
:P

def too broad

problem is, last reason is chosen and the question isn't really too broad.

meh

Q: What is this "custom badge here..." thing in the badge tracker all about?

Pikachu the Watermelon WizardWhile selecting a new badge to track, I came across something odd on the badge tracker gui: I'm looking specifically at this part: I've never noticed it before. (And I go through the badge tracker a lot.) It doesn't actually seem to work; I still can't track a custom badge after entering on...

Yeah, the MSE one is blue, but the Arqade one is green.

@MEEthesneakyuser heh, so my edit failed? I think the question is on topic and not dupe.
It's a fact that once upon a time, simple questions got upvotes and were considered good. These days those same questions, when asked again (in different form, not dupes) will be downvoted and closed. So it's valid to discuss why and what changed.
It's not asking to make those questions legit, just what changed. Simple answer is "sheer amount of questions and fighting to keep high quality", which of course needs to be more detailed as a real answer there.

I didn't vtc. I just saw 4 close votes, wondered for which reason and saw that interesting screen from above. I haven't read the question carefully enough to make a qualified decision on this.

Well doesn't matter, question appears to be doomed.
Not something I'll spend more time on, just bit sad that's all.
hmm... how come spam takes so long to be nuked? Auto flag is off again? @Sonic

@ShadowWizard you can re-ask it ;p

10:46 AM
hehe

Anyway, it has been 8 hours since the change in HNQ (8-hour delay to be eligible for HNQ)... any significant result to the HNQ list?

@NoDistractionWizard Perhaps give it some more time? :D
After all, IPS has only had 1 question on there, and that one briefly. (At least, it was out this morning when I read the chat transcript, and rightfully so ;) )

Ah, I'm not demanding the result, just a personal observation is okay :)

@NoDistractionWizard money.stackexchange.com/q/109076/68021 < This one then? There's two answer there that don't even mention whether or not there's an actual way to get money back... and it's had plenty of time for cleanup? :P

@NoDistractionWizard don' think there will be any change, same questions will be there, just after 8 hours delay. :)
e.g. there's now wife question there.

10:53 AM
@ShadowWizard that's what I believe though, but some users are not convinced
e.g. that smaller sites might lose competition due to lack of upvotes

@rene gone

\o/

@NoDistractionWizard hmm... well Movies.SE appears to do just fine, most GoT questions today got tons of upvotes anyway.
(So expect a flood on HNQ sidebar soon)
Also, on smaller sites there's no heavy traffic that bury the questions, they get the attention after waiting 8 hours.

@NoDistractionWizard I'm not sure... I mean, the larger sites also have to wait those 8 hours, meaning there's still less HNQ voting on their questions in that period too....
Also, I have to brag but... I'm amazing :P I just solved a co-workers three day problem in 10 minutes. XD Now I only have to sort the stuff I've been working on for this week.

11:18 AM
Hmm, interesting viewpoint ... Especially on the "smaller sites = less activities = more attention" 😮
@Tinkeringbell you're always amazing ;)

@NoDistractionWizard Oh, wait until you find out :P I'm just as flawed as any other human, I guess
I can name at least three people that don't find me amazing, at all ;-)

Okay, challenge accepted ...

@rene A manager, the co-worker that snitched to my manager, and just pick one of the friends I had to drop during my lifetime.
It's a nice mess... If I'm not careful, I'll be forced to do some kind of talk just because I'm female and working as a dev :/

Yes, that's because you're special, no? Maybe you should do that talk and use that 45 minutes to insult everyone in the room?

@rene If they make me do it, that thought has seriously crossed my mind as well.
I mean, there are so many amazing people that would like such a spotlight, or to provide propaganda for a specific viewpoint... Even if you just limit the pool to females. I don't get why they have to pick the 1 person that just wants to be a person like everyone else to force that person to set themselves apart :/

11:30 AM
@Tinkeringbell I used a presentation once to portray the management team as incompetent where I could. At least the colleagues had a good laugh

@rene I haven't completely indulged myself in the details yet, but this is some kind of inspiration event pukes

@Tinkeringbell you are exotic and that unfortunately makes you more of a "kermis attractie" that needs be shown to the crowd.

@rene That's an idea too. If they make me go, I'll make sure to look like one too
At least it shouldn't be so hard to mess it up just enough that they'll never make me do it again, but it's just such a hassle

I recall I had cases in the past where european funds for positive discrimination were only awarded when specific events / action were organized. Are you sure you're not simply used to secure those funds?

@rene Not sure, and honestly, I'm not interested to find out either. It would only make me more pissed off at the whole thing, it's already such a drain of angry energy :/

11:38 AM
sure. If you're forced into this and have no way out, do know I'm happy to brainstorm ideas to make sure this will be a once in a life time experience without incurring too much damage on your position.

Thanks :) I'll let you know, once I know for sure they're making me do this.

Yve deleted her Twitter account.... :(

@Tinkeringbell We had something like this here
Our material scientist had to give a talk about women in science.
She ... really didn't like it
I think it had something to do with increased funding for our R&D from ... somewhere?

For me, it's more the principle of the matter, being asked because you're female is just wrong. And no-one has yet told me any other good reason for why they specifically want me for that job, and not any other suitable candidate that likes doing that kind of stuff. The timing is way off too, right around the time I get in trouble with the manager for repeated attempts to disassociate myself from the women-in-tech-company club.
Feels more like I'm being told to write lines as a punishment, then actually thinking I should do this because of some good reason.

Well the rationale is to foster positive role models in the industry
Under the assumption that {More positive female role models in tech} -> {more girls will follow their interest to join the industry} -> {more women in tech}

11:43 AM
@Magisch Oh. Well. I guess I'll throw that picture of me dressed up as black pete out there then, that should positively ruin my chances of being a role model.
@Magisch Which is absolutely disgusting, implying that only females can be role-models and you can't learn anything from guys. Best teachers I've had were guys. Remember the story I told about being mentored by that female coworker in IPS chat? :| If that's the kind of role-models they want, I wish them good luck.

I don't have that much of an opinion on it
It's risky territory and I don't want the social consequences of having a wrong opinion on the subject

You can't have 'wrong opinions'. You can have one that many people disagree with, but an opinion is never really 'wrong'.
But we should probably switch topic and talk about more cheerful stuff. :)

Any opinion is wrong in the eyes of those who don't agree with it...
@Tinkeringbell sure! How's the weather? :D

@ShadowWizard Cold, wet, dismal
XD

Which reminds me, @Mithrandir do you plan to do a מדורה this year, in spite of the heat wave?

11:49 AM

Leaving aside the pollution, it's just risky.

I need to hurry up an finish that one ^
Could use it well, with this kind of weather.

@Tinkeringbell nice!
Here summer is arriving quickly, we'll have 40 degrees (Celsius) this weekend. :/

@ShadowWizard Yep! I hope I have enough yarn though... I think I may run out of some colours and have to buy extra...

it's raining here
which is nice

11:50 AM
@ShadowWizard That's just too hot. I could use a bit more sunlight, and a few degrees of warmth. Just enough that you can go out in a longsleeved shirt, feel the breeze, but not get cold :D
@Magisch For some definitions of nice ;)

@ShadowWizard I'm planning on staying home and watching a movie. All the smoke isn't good for my asthma.

@Mithrandir so keep the windows shut tightly... what movie? ;)

@Mithrandir What's a squibble and why does it involve smoke? :D

12:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell where did you see the word squibble?

@ShadowWizard Probably something Marvel.

18 mins ago, by Shadow Wizard
Which reminds me, @Mithrandir do you plan to do a מדורה this year, in spite of the heat wave?

@Mithrandir good! Unlike HBO, they never miss.

There's an illegible squibble in that sentence ;)

12:08 PM
מדורה - pronounced "m'durah" - means "bonfire".

You mean the word מדורה?
oh lol @Mith is faster

@ShadowWizard That's a word? Looks like a squibble to me :P
@Mithrandir Ah. :)

Younger and faster... so unfair... crying

@ShadowWizard I'm on a phone. You have no excuse.

@Tink it's all about this:
Lag BaOmer (Hebrew: לַ״ג בָּעוֹמֶר), also Lag B'Omer, is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This day marks the hillula (celebration, interpreted by some as anniversary of death) of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a Mishnaic sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century, and the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of kabbalah in the form of the Zohar (Book of Splendor), a landmark text of Jewish mysticism. This association has spawned several well-known customs and practices on Lag BaOmer...

12:09 PM
@Mithrandir If you haven't completely upgraded laptops between the last one we talked about your laptop, I think it's better to use your phone than your laptop :P

Look... hopefully when tourist season comes, I'll have the funds for a new laptop. :P

His next plan is to browse using screen reader only, you know. @Tink ;)

@Mithrandir Good luck! :)
What kind of work do you do, that relies on tourists?

...stuff.

12:11 PM
Which is annoying...
Aug 13 '18 at 8:44, by Mithrandir
Tourists are annoying.
:D

(It's kinda unique, so to avoid being doxxed I prefer not to say.)
@ShadowWizard They really are.

@Mithrandir Ah. Okay :) Sorry for asking.
I'll try and remember not to ask again :D

Not an issue. You're always free to ask, I'm just free to refuse to answer :P

Well, assuming you have to serve them in a way, and they expect a good treatment... it's kind of expected that it will be annoying. :)

@ShadowWizard People from out of the country are better than people from here in that regard...
Israelis are rude and entitled :p

12:13 PM
I worked once for about a month in a shop, and the little customer experience was terrible... each customer thinks they own the shop.
@Mithrandir so it's not a צימר, I guess. lol
(as those are not really unique)
@Mithrandir more like "think they know the best, and will always bargain for better price" when it comes to business, yeah. :D

@ShadowWizard ...right.

And not a taxi driver since you don't have a license yet... (or do you? ;))

@ShadowWizard Or "This doesn't meet EXACTLY what I expected so I'll just walk out without even trying it first, and try to avoid paying even though I took up a slot of your time"

heh
That's why many places have a strict "cancellation fee" policy.
@Mithrandir I'm bit confused now.... so your job involves both tourists and "natives"? Or did you mean from the beginning "People from outside your own place" by "tourists" that are annoying? :)
Anyway, promise to not be annoying if I arrive. :D
I'll try what you suggest even if not meeting exactly what I expect.

"tourists" = "people touring", so yeah, anyone who doesn't live there

12:21 PM
heh
For me "tourist" means someone who comes from a different country for a visit...
Well, surely @g3r is going to be a good tourist, when he comes to Israel. :P

Of course.;)

By that definition, a musician that visits Poland to play a concert is a tourist, and someone who travels from Czechia to hear that concert isn't.

lol now it's clear you're on phone (missing space ;))
@JohnDvorak first part makes some sense, though the musician comes to work, so not just "visitor", but Poland and Czechia are different countries, so can't see the logic in the second part?

@VoteDukakis I have a userscript that grants me reduced ads on every site I visit, irregardless of reputation. It's called uBlock Origin.
@ShadowWizard does "there and back" count as a tour?

@ShadowWizard certainly. I'll make sure to also bring dulce de leche

12:26 PM
@JohnDvorak You mean quick <24h visit? Yeah, think it does.
@g3rv4 dul what? :D

@g3rv4 please do

@ShadowWizard dulce de leche. Like caramel, but a thousand times better
2

@ShadowWizard Actually, now I'm on my computer :P My phone automatically puts a space after periods. :P

lol
@g3rv4 yummy!

Please take the [tour]!

12:34 PM
:D
!!/tour

For anyone interested: Czechia - Switzerland 5:4. Last goal was into an empty net.

Can't imagine if the net was full...

There was almost a sixth goal from across the field (empty net #2), but the puck made a right turn.

@JohnDvorak puck? :P For some weird reason I thought you were talking soccer at first :)

Four matches left to go, all of them mostly inconsequential :P

@Rob Hey, good stuff needs to pointed out from time to time too :)

It would have been unfortunate for it to have sat where it was. I guess 'convert question to an answer and merge to another question' comes up too infrequently for there to be a button. :)

You can't even convert comment to answer...

Rob
and yet the reverse happens automatically.

And you can't convert answer to question 🙃

1:56 PM
@Rob naw. Not always automatically

Rob

Where is the written summary, anyway?

@VoteDukakis I assume it will be coming in 6-8 weeks minutes

@VoteDukakis all of them, because there's no bullet...
We need a bullet to write a summary.
