Q: What do moderators wish the users of Unix & Linux (.SE) knew?

Stephen KittAs we welcome our new rulersmoderators (congratulations!), and they discover the ropes of moderation, it seems to me the ideal time to ask this question. What do moderators wish the users of Unix & Linux knew? (I mean users of the Stack Exchange web site, here, not general users of Unix-style o...

Thats an interesting question ...
especially since mods are users first

Annoying that there's no way to do that from mobile.

@Mithrandir Yeah, doing stuff on mobile is always annoying :)

Getting up at 4:30AM is no fun, by the way.

Staying awake till then isn't fun either.

I prefer it that way around...

I'm now told to work on my comprehension skills. Not going to push it to request working on their sense of humor. I accept my humor is at another level.

@rene So you comprehend that? Congrats, you improved! :P

lol

Were you told this by a manager? Managers are weird :P

10:15 AM
Chief of Comprehension

What does the Chief of Comprehension do, besides making people comprehend?

10:32 AM
@Tinkeringbell no, on MSO
but I have had those managers as well.

@rene Oh, if it's just MSO :P

Spammer keeps posting it ^
(so better nuke that account.)
@JNat cross site spammer, small one but steel.... ;)

@ShadowWizard this was the previous one: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/325841/…

@ShadowWizard Ah. I was waiting for that to pop up again and know for sure it was spam!

@GetAnswerWizard flags as uh... flag abuse? Sure, why not

Q: Instant self-answer leads to double First Posts review

GlorfindelWhen reviewing this answer on Astronomy Stack Exchange, my attention was drawn to the very first sentence: My attempt at an answer of my own question. So ... did a user inadvertently create another account here to answer their own question? Nope, they didn't – they were just assigned extra ...

Erm, should it be fixed though?

Rob
O/

@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard hky?

Rob
Hello to you also.

Hallo

12:33 PM
What's up?

Riddle: what's wrong in this picture?

Rob
How's the coffee holding out, get through that box yet? I finished a jar that I started around the same time as yours arrived a couple of days ago.

@ShadowWizard Answer: I can't see it

@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard 0.5 points

A jar in a few days? Holy crud
Now I wanna go drink some coffee
Also studying. BBL

12:37 PM
@Rob I consume two capsules on Friday and 2-3 on Saturday, plus sometimes one during the week. So about 5 weekly. Three months, right? So... 3*4*5 = 60 capsules consumed, still 40 remaining. ;)

Rob
@ShadowWizard Someone abandoned their garbage on a tank?
And I drink over a dozen mugs a day ...

@Rob huh? You mean the one that is covered? Nah, it just means it's not on alert and won't be shooting any time soon. ;)
@Rob whoa that's even more than me.... lol :D
@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard three months, he talk about this:
Jan 8 at 13:07, by Shadow Wizard
Ordered 100 capsules of espresso coffee.
@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard EYS!

@ShadowWizard that those tanks are out there :(

Rob
The pop bottle on the roof of the tank one behind the two men putting the barrel out of alignment (leaning on your weapon is a no-no, especially a rifle).

@rene 1 point (out of 5)
@Rob ohhh lol I didn't even notice that because that's so normal and I always left bottles on the tank. (Which isn't a tank, it has no armor... it's a Self-propelled gun ;))
A self-propelled gun (SPG) is a form of self-propelled artillery, and in modern use is usually used to refer to artillery pieces such as howitzers. Self-propelled guns are mounted on a motorized wheeled or tracked chassis (because of this they are sometimes visually similar to tanks). As such the gun can be maneuvered under its own power as opposed to a towed gun that relies upon a vehicle or other means to be moved on the battlefield. Self-propelled guns are combat support weapons; they are employed by combat support units fighting in support of, or attached to, the main combat units: infantry...
@Rob anyway, +5 you hit the spot. Those two should not be on the barrel, it's against basic safety orders.

Rob
12:45 PM
Saves gas, but couldn't a hand held rocket disable it?

The barrel can move with a switch inside the gun, and someone might trigger that switch by accident.
@Rob that's why those are always far in the back.
Tanks are in front.
The range is 10-20 km, can be more.

Rob
But gun range 10% further!

@Rob hmm?
It depends on the type of rocket it fires

Rob
You made it sound like they put SPG ~20 km from the front line, but the howitzer shoots 22.4 km.

Anyway, this is a tank, and also with severe safety rules breaking. :(

Rob
12:58 PM
Anyways, gtg Shad. Need coffee too. :)

Anyway, we can talk about other things, I guess.
cough
OK, coffee was good!

@ShadowWizard Great :)
I still have another hour to go until tea time.
But there will be stroopwafel :D

@Tinkeringbell I have to get some of those as I promised them as a reward

Okay, just got an annoying e-mail. The chocolate easter eggs are on the table of the conference room. The conference room in 150 km north of me, as I'm working from home ...

@rene :( :( :(
Time to rebel and get your own easter eggs!

oh, that is tempting ...

Isn't easter over long ago??

It is! I want some too now. Ah well, I can go grocery shopping tomorrow morning ;)
@ShadowWizard Last year's Easter is :P

My boss brought Lindt chocolate bars when getting back from Germany yesterday.

1:19 PM
This year it's 19-22 of April

200g bars.
@Tinkeringbell heh, very near Passover.

@ShadowWizard I'm remembering both being related somehow, though I can't remember the detais.

@Tinkeringbell this?

@ShadowWizard I remember! Before being crucified Jesus had a Seder meal :)
At least that's what I've always been told.

> Q: What <word request here> do we expect of moderators? A: patient and fair; leads by example ... (other list items on an election page)
Does quality fit in the above sentence? i.e. "What qualities do we expect of moderators?"
The original sentence on the election page is Our general criteria for moderators are as follows, but I'm looking for a word whose meaning is closer to characteristics or attributes rather than criteria.
quality (qualities) is in fact the first word that I came up with

1:34 PM
attitude?
qualities seems good though

good, thanks

Joel Spolsky on March 28, 2019

Big news! We’re looking for a new CEO for Stack Overflow. I’m stepping out of the day to day and up to the role of Chairman of the Board. Stack Overflow has been around for more than a decade. As I look back, it’s really amazing how far it has come.  Only six months after we had launched Stack Overflow, my co-founder Jeff Atwood and I were invited to speak at a Microsoft conference for developers in Las Vegas. We were there, I think, to demonstrate that you could use their latest ASP.NET MVC technology on a real website without too much of a disaster. (In fact .NET has been a huge, unmitigated …

@Feeds I vote for Jay!
If anyone can make SO great again, it's him.

Where can I nominate?

Not on Jobs
I know! Twitter.

yikes
seems like a lot of upper management is just leaving

2:09 PM
Shog doesn't leave.
I hope.
Tim doesn't leave.
I hope.
David was just promoted recently so also doesn't leave. I hope. :)
@Magisch two aren't really a lot, still don't think it's a mass leaving.
(balpha isn't management)

Exodus

user302202
@Feeds Hardly news at all, TBH.

@AskQuestionWizard you saw it in your crystal ball?
Why didn't you tell?! :D

Internal candidates first!

@rene Shog?

2:12 PM
Hmm, I don't think he would fancy that

user302202
Joel was fading out of day to day stuff for a long time.

@AskQuestionWizard What I tended to hear was he was a great guy - but we kinda never really saw him much on the sites proper
@ShadowWizard don't tell Tim, cause he'll hate me, but I'm kinda hoping he gets promoted ;)

@AskQuestionWizard still, being CEO usually doesn't mean they should take care of day to day stuff. For that they hire other people. No?

@ShadowWizard eh kinda sorta

user302202
Site engagement was never his thing to begin with; I referred to creation of additional layers of abstractions between CEO and the field operations.

2:14 PM
What does a CEO do?

CEO should set the general direction the company goes into.

chief things

important things

user302202
More interesting is the relation between CEO and President, since SO still has the latter.

There's different ways to run a company - There's the broad stratergy of course, but there's something to be said for someone who's the face of the company to the bigger world

2:16 PM
@AskQuestionWizard huh? Who?

user302202
David.

user302202
Especially if President is someone who was with the company for N years, and CEO is hired externally.

@JourneymanGeek promoted to what position?

@ShadowWizard well, more specifically, I think the veep of culture should be an SO/SE person ;p

user302202
For a while I imagined Jay would be taking Joel's position when Joel steps away, but...

2:17 PM
@JourneymanGeek VIP
:)

@AskQuestionWizard so basically lots of moved cheese ahead

That's not cheese moving

I get the feeling being CEO is a thankless and annoying job

Its the whole cheese shop getting put on a trailer? ;p

you got to juggle all the priorities, make decisions that most people will hate, and the blame game always stops at you

user302202
2:18 PM
One thing for sure: being a 2nd in command when a new 1st in command comes from the outside is something that leads one to at least consider moving.

@Magisch from what I've seen of Joel - he seems to like building things ;)

then CEO probably wasn't the best role for him

but once they're built, well, there's the next thing to build

At least not of a "settled" company

Actually true of quite a few software dev types ;)

2:19 PM
I know I'll never go into management
precisely because of that dynamic

@Magisch IMO the best managers are the folks who don't want to be
Because you've still got a bit of your head in the way people do things.

@MEEthesetupwizard you rang?

Also...
> I’m stepping out of the day to day and up to the role of Chairman of the Board.
does mean Joel's probably going to still be around, least in an advisory level

@Glorfindel yep. You responded to my comments with a link to a query. Can you give the link to me (not having 10k rep yet) please?

2:24 PM
Thanks

SEDE has a user profile page as well, including recently edited queries

So that is what you're up to ...

Busted!
@JourneymanGeek who else on that Board?
Who's the current chairman?

@ShadowWizard honestly? Never bothered to check

hehe
I'm surprised that a not-so-big company like SE even have a Board and stuff.
Maybe it's part of them getting $40M from a private fund few years ago?
Well if anyone knows, it's @Ask. :)

Wait... @AskQuestionWizard why won't you be the next CEO? :-)

@ShadowWizard to a certain extent it makes sense

@ShadowWizard Weekly SE trivia? I'm sold...

@GetAnswerWizard Trivia.Meta.StackExchange?

> Member of the Board of Directors
No chairman

2:33 PM
yup

In honor of our... Chairman of the Board...

@Shog9 lol
Good to see you around!
Michael Pryor appears to be, but it says "only" Co-Founder

He also was CFO at some point?

Yeah
So looks like Joel will be the 5th member, and the chairman.

@ShadowWizard presumably.

2:36 PM
@Shog any changes for you that we should know about? ;)

ah...
about that
yes

you become a dev?!

I'm about to leave
5

nooooo

2:36 PM
no

Maaaan

...to drive to Black Forest Colorado for a delicious breakfast sandwich

I guess he is. It's not April Fools yet.

But I'll return after that

2:37 PM
@Shog9 You monster.

@Shog9 you.. .. ..
lolz

@Shog9 Sadly that can't be interpreted as an April Fools joke either :P

no joke
it's seriously a good breakfast sandwich

Pic or it never happened

2:37 PM
I kind of saw that coming... that car...

I can take pic of my sandwich too.

How far of a drive are you making for it?

Here's a link to the menu: rnrcoffeecafe.com/restaurant.html#menu

I am willing to drive hours for a decent salmon bagel.

the link doesn't work
so you'll have to just trust me: it has... Some sort of coffee-glazed bacon on it

2:39 PM
@Shog9 it does. Empty menu.

@Shog9 the kerning slightly breaks my dyslexic brain ._.

the juices are so good you'll wanna lick your plate clean

We’re tweaking or BBQ Pork Sammich: adding a quick pickle jalapeño and our crispy onion straws. And, yes, it’s quite tasty this way! #eatlocal #fromscratchcooking

That reminds me... we bought bacon bits but now we switched dinner plans... but I can of course still add bacon bits :D

2:41 PM
see, the keming on that is wild... I read it as "mr coffee cafe"

@Shog9 that's how I read it...

that is what it says ...

I couldn't even read the URL at first...

with a bit of that wierd almost flicker where the brain is flipping between r n r and m r

Why settle for a boring ol’ breakfast sandwich when we have a T.A.B.L.E Sammich ready for you? #coffeebacon #sammich #deelish
THAT'S what I'm after.

2:42 PM
Nice... strawberries for breakfast!

Sandwich Overflow
2

@Shog9 eww it's 1.5 years old

those strawberries do look good

if your hands aren't covered in egg and bacon grease, it wasn't a real breakfast.

a bit early in the year for strawberries

2:43 PM
@ShadowWizard I think someone ate the sandwich in that time... ;p

@Shog9 I'll never eat a real breakfast then, that sounds gross.

@JourneymanGeek so even worse! :P

@Tinkeringbell only until you lick your fingers clean

@rene You can get them year round by now. But our strawberry tree is still barren :)

....
strawberries grow on trees?

2:44 PM
The berries in the pic aren't from a tree. ;)

it's a handy reminder to put down your phone and focus on what's important

money does

@Shog9 Ehhh. The tube of eczema creme does say it's for external use only, so no licking fingers. Sorry!

@JourneymanGeek wild berries, sure. My grandfather had a tree with AWESOME berries.

2:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ours do! :D

.... immagonnagooglethat

@Tinkeringbell you should totally drop that & try bacon grease

that's almost of a mind blower as finding out how brussels sprouts grow

@Tinkeringbell just FYI this was deleted on MSO before you deleted this. Something up with that user?

@Journeyman such a tree:

2:46 PM
@rene You need to ask Chris then, I can't see deleted SO stuff

Rob
@ShadowWizard I blocked that person in chat so they won't be able to do that again. That's the second person that I've blocked, if they were hoping to be first they weren't successful. Back in a few hours, if you're still awake (drink more coffee!).

those look like current

We call that our strawberry tree :D

@Tinkeringbell I don't think I ever pinged Chris

2:47 PM
@Rob yeah me too, and they're chat banned now. So it's all behind us.

Ours has some kind of drainage in the middle, is about shoulder hight, and allows for easy watering from up top.
@rene Go on, he doesn't bite.

@rene because he was never here?

Oh, I'll do it.

oh, you mean on SO

@rene @ChrisF as I can't see deleted stuff on SO, could you take a look please?

@Tinkeringbell oooohhhhh, I want to visit when that has fruit on it.

what is this even?

@ShadowWizard that's a mulberry

@Shog9 it's a tasty berry. :)

One of my big regrets in the UK was passing by a wild raspberry bush every day....

2:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek think it refers to the tag auto complete feature

and being too scared to try it ;)

ugh... no... more like tag filters on SE

@ShadowWizard so... that needs someone to fill in a tag wiki exerpt... or at least know what that is ;p
its a valid tag, just ... mysterious

@ShadowWizard it is. Trees'll shred your feet climbing 'em though
Still worth it

@Shog9 never had to climb. Picked the low hanging berries. :)
The tree died 20 years ago or so... don't remember how... think when it got to -5 degrees one night. :(

2:52 PM
Your trees die after a night of freezing? :/
Poor tree

Let's put a historical lock on tag instead...

@Tinkeringbell well the average at winter is 12 (during night), and lowest usually is 5. We get below zero once every few years.
The tree survived few such things, guess it became old.
(and I mean where I live, not whole Israel - we do have cold regions, e.g. where @Mith lives ;))
@JourneymanGeek not sure enough yet

@GetAnswerWizard I'm tempted to ask a question about what the globaltag-megablender is....

A reminder that once upon a time, the current President was dealing with wildcard in tags and adding status- tags to things.

user302202
Another inspirational rags to riches story.

@AskQuestionWizard which is good, no?

@AskQuestionWizard he's already a President? Looks like his SO Careers profile hasn't been updated then?
or I'm missing something so obvious...

@GetAnswerWizard looks like he forgot to update.

Jeff for CEO.

Not too likely
He does have a shiny new thing he is building ;)

Based on the second bullet point, does that mean I can do whatever I want?

You can do anything like restricting what you can do until you can do nothing
That's like a bad programming paradigm...
