Ugg this could be bad for SE gizmodo.com/…

@Shadow Incorrect.
Nice, I’m in third place. — Alex Jul 24 at 1:10

@Alex mean here in Tavern now, pingable. :)

user351483
!!/SenseOfImpendingDoom

@Snow No such command 'senseofimpendingdoom'.

!!/JawsMusic

12:08 PM
@Mgetz No such command 'jawsmusic'.

aww that really really should be

Yeah, having only one Alex is pretty doomy.

12:20 PM
@Mgetz We wanted rule of law. Instead, we got rule of lawyers. :-(

JAD
12:30 PM
is there really a way to separate those two?

Soon Google will rule with their Quantum Computer.

12:57 PM
I don't know what to do with this comment. Are they saying they liked the answer because it looked like a personal attack? If so, is the comment itself a personal attack? Because I do feel personally attacked by it (but as some people say, maybe I'm just "reading too much into this"?)

Oh hey @HugoZink what was 'the spirit' of this answer that is now lost?
I guess the answer will be 'no comment'. That's sad :(

Hugo isn't here. Unless that was a super ping?

JAD
guesso

Super all dem pingz

JAD
Not sure if you really expected an answer asking it like that in public

1:11 PM
@Shadow Hugo was here, that's why I was able to ping them normally. They made themselves scarce when asked though... I guess that says enough.
@JAD Oh, I had hoped for one, yes...

My phone apparently randomly autocorrected to pinginginging at one point

@Tinkeringbell oh, didn't notice. :/

@JourneymanGeek sounds legit

I'm used to scare people away with my pings though. :D

Hahaha yeah I noticed :)

1:18 PM
Like the Eye of Sauron gazing in their direction?

@Raedwald my eye isn't red. Yet. ;)

I'd love that.

@Shadow it's why I'm not in the Den :p

user612952
Hey, I'm currently caught up in work so I would appreciate it if I wasn't passive-aggressively lambasted for not replying within 5 minutes. The only reason I showed up as "active" in here is because I misclicked the sidebar roughly 2 hours ago.

About the edit, was it a moderation decision or an "answer improvement" decision? I feel that affects the outcome a little bit. I was under the impression that if it concerns a regular edit, the "spirit" of the answer should be preserved. It seems like a fine edit *suggestion*, but I was not comfortable leaving an upvote on an answer that's still su

@Bart thought it's because of the smell. ditching plan to make Den smell better ;)

JAD
1:20 PM
@HugoZink votes get unlocked after edits, so you can retract your vote if you so please

@HugoZink That's not really how misclicking the sidebar works... If you did that two hours ago, you wouldn't have shown as popping in. Why would we ever EVER try to preserve a spirit that's 'mean', or likely to be perceived as such?
Guidance for r/a posts is 'if you can edit it out, edit it out'.
That goes for any other post too: Decreasing ambiguity, clarifying... all go before 'the spirit'.

It frankly looks like the kind of edit I would have made. If anything it helps avoid misinterpretation of tone by the OP of that answer, who seems to suggest no such interpretation is warranted in the comments.

JAD
The edit shifts the answer from the notion that if you disagree with someone you are arguing against the person, to that you are arguing their ideas. Seems fair to me

@JAD +1

@Shadow I did expect it to smell like a den ... but I forgot that was the English word, and not the Dutch one ...

1:30 PM
@Bart Pine tree

@Bart pine tree?
oh lol

JAD
Evergreen

@Tinkeringbell #thatsthejoke

JAD
I missed it until you started about Dutch

Does a pine tree have a smell?

JAD
1:31 PM
and you said it was a joke

user612952
Presumably I was shown as "popping in" because I got pinged, entered the room and started typing a response while also trying to juggle some pointers in C++? Does it really matter? It was clearly intended as a jab and found it a very weird thing to comment on

user612952
Either way I had missed the part where votes stop being locked in after edits, so thanks

"It feels like a form of hell here" Then maybe you shouldn't have started the fire. You can't instigate drama and then cry and play the victim when you inevitably get caught up in it. — Hugo Zink 16 mins ago

Sounds like good advice all around...

user612952
1:32 PM
True

So stop whining about pings.

(and edits to other people's posts too?)

You've been commenting like a madman for two weeks. You can't say you're too busy to handle the fallout from that now

user612952
Not whining about the pings, I'm referring to the behavior that I found weird, where if someone doesn't respond in the first 5 minutes you ping them again and then leave passigve-aggressive remarks

user612952
Besides that, I think mods should be held to a tad higher standard than some rando browsing the site

1:33 PM
Well pointers have nasty habit of causing trouble in unexpected times. :(
@HugoZink you were pinged only once before you showed up all ready for battle. Nobody is after you.

Again, you were a rando a few weeks ago. Now I recognize your name. That usually means you're either really awesome, or...

mag
shog not in a good mood today
have some pancakes o~

@Shog9 There were actually people directly harassing her, I have the flags to prove it

Shog needs coffee. Shog is annoyed at seeing the people who were arguing one side two days ago switching positions.

user612952
Oh weird, I saw two highlights

1:35 PM
@Mgetz not aimed at her

mag
!!/coffee shog

@mag brews a cup of Mocha for @shog

@HugoZink your name is highlighted, but only with a "@" it pings.

I'll just go back to work then and let this 💩storm pass

user612952
I see, thanks

1:35 PM
@HugoZink cheers. Coffee? :)

user612952
Also for the record, I am not saying that I only liked the answer because it was a personal attack. I would have supported the edit but I would have wanted the original author to OK it.

user612952
If it remained a personal attack I'd rather be in favor of deleting it

Shadow gives @Shog double shot of espresso

thank you!

Shadow waiting for a tip
:P

1:38 PM
keep your nose clean

@Shadow here's a tip ... don't push Shog today

@Shog9 check. Thanks!

@Shadow not by picking it though.

@Bart not even into an array?
@Tinkeringbell ugh. Now you tell me? :(
checking finger

mag
not pushing shog is general good advice

1:40 PM
"but I would have wanted the original author to OK" isn't really the intention of SE, though

mag
in fact, not pushing anyone right now is

user194636
so what's new on meta

@mag I could use someone to push me (and desk chair) to the coffee machine right now...

mag
cmon, you can fly

@Raedwald Meta SE is different from most SE sites

1:42 PM
@mag But it's so far and I'm so laazy...

Something like Stack Overflow is designed around editing because it's more objective

user612952
@Raedwald When I was active a few years ago, I thought the consensus was to avoid edits that change the meaning of an answer, especially on meta sites.

Where as editing someone's opinion on Meta is more contentious

user612952
I was given a stern talking to after a well-intentioned edit on meta.codegolf

Agreed.

1:43 PM
If done wrong, having your post edited on Meta can feel like someone is putting words in your mouth

@HugoZink Meaning hasn't changed. Arguments used haven't changed. The way things were phrased has.

user612952
Anyway I added an extra comment to the answer to clarify. Apparently my original comment made it come off badly

Expressing opinions you don't hold true

@HugoZink meaning should remain, attitude can change.

@Shog9 This'd be off-topic under any comment section where I'd be likely to say it, but I completely understand that for people like you it can get exhausting and exasperating to try and keep MSE in check during these times. I might not agree with even half of your posts, but I do admire your dedication.

1:46 PM
@HugoZink I'm still wondering what kind of meaning you're seeing changed in the answer...

@Gloweye It might not be your intent, but that comes off as a bit of a backhanded compliment

hoooooooooooooooooooooooo
how we all doing?

My intent was a full on compliment, not a backhanded one.

I'm doing alright. Planning to go to Anime NYC

Basically, I want to express support even if I don't completely agree with the judgment calls being made.

1:50 PM
@Gloweye sounds legit

@Stevoisiak sounds nice. Have you been there before?

@rene I have not. Only convention I'd been to before was Anime Next
I cosplayed as a Bob Ross Deadpool and the "Is this a pigeon" meme guy

A new world opens for me ...

I'm mostly going because my friends are going too :P
I'm going to get to meet an online friend in person for the first time

Having good company is a plus
@Stevoisiak oh, that is exciting.

user194636
1:55 PM
@Gloweye Thanks for your constructive comments on my answer.

I have a photo of my cosplay from AnimeNext

@Stevoisiak Have you met online friends before?

have a star!

@rene Only once before. An old friend from the TF2 wiki was visiting New York a few months ago

1:57 PM
Awesome!

user310756
@Shog9 are you saying I'm starting the drama?

@194636 I try ;) I think the discussion is an important one to have, for as long as SE doesn't handle the matter.

@Nobody hmm? No.

user310756
@Bart there's been a lot aimed at me. Most of it's been deleted.

Or maybe... You and everyone else. I donno. Where's Billy Joel when you need him?

user194636
1:58 PM
@Gloweye Yep. I'm really lost at this point to know what to do for the best.

user310756
@Shog9 I wasn't sure- when you agreed with Hugo's comment

"We didn't start the fire; we just gave it fuel until everyone was cruel..."

user310756
@Shog9 well, yes, that's actually true

mag
it was always burning since the world's been turning...

user310756
If none of us participated on it- the issue would die

1:59 PM
@mag I like 'Piano man' better...

I would say Nobody is responsible for the entire s***show, but that would be the generic version of "nobody".
