10:00 PM
Have you tried disengaging?

ah, so rather than "please look around for anything that needs flagging" you're really saying "I see things that needs flagging away, so please help"

@Andras, I can't stand him whatsoever :P

@YvetteColomb too many comments for lazy shadow... If you see specific comments worth flagging, post links and I'll take a look. :)

@Yvette, found one so far.

user310756
@Shadow I didn't want to do that.

10:07 PM
Ugh. I have to change my PSN name again. I just hope I don't lose my trophies :/

@Froopy I thought you couldn't change that
in order to prevent trolling or something...

They made it a thing last May.
First is free, next are 4.99
or 9.99 without psplus.
Also, @ArtOfCode, sorry if those tea comments were not optimal for the room. I'm still kinda new here.

@ArtOfCode tea also thrown to trash... :(

That is so tea

10:10 PM
*not last may, but just may 2019

brewing new tea

@Froopy Tea is fine, I just wanted to get rid of the unproductiveness and it kinda got caught in the middle :P

I leave you guys for 28 minutes.

28.5

Oh, okay. Just make sure I'm not stomping on any toes. Thank you for explaining :)
*Just making sure
Ugh.

10:10 PM
Tea sucks unless you make it.

@M.A.R. This. As a Britisher, I feel this.

eh
i hate making tea

*Just making ugh

My tea is my tea. I have yet to find anyone else who can make it right.

I have to boop out for about 30-45 mins, but I'll be back. Save my tea!
XD

10:11 PM
Couple of people have got close after lots of attempts... but it's still not mine.

Didn't finish it yet.

There should be a SaveMyTea campaign
Did you know . . . Hmm, I had an awesome biological fact nugget but I forgot.
Anyway, don't drink too much tea. Or coffee. Or water.
You'd think it goes without saying.

@Froopy nice!

They have [compound] that [biological process]es your brain which causes [something bad] if you drink too much.

Too much caffeine makes you bounce off the walls, anyway

10:13 PM
Mmm, more like a jetpack

Too much water and you explode
that's a very scientific fact right there

Science is awesome.

user310756
close to another 30 comments on here and there's already been >100? I think deleted. Anyone want to lay down some flags? meta.stackexchange.com/a/335787/310756 I think the no longer needed ones also work for multiple flags

@ArtOfCode something something "there are many like it"

Going to space? You explode.
Drinking water? You explode.

10:14 PM
@AndrasDeak but this one is my precious

@ArtOfCode not me. 7+ cups a day.

Typing a tweet? You get responses. And then you explode.

user310756
how on earth people think 100 comments is ok I dunno

@YvetteColomb there's nothing wrong with 100 comments

@Shadow let me restate... too much caffeine as compared to your caffeine tolerance :P

10:15 PM
Looks like my top comment there, with at least 50 upvotes, was removed...

@AndrasDeak Now if it was 101

More than about 5 cups a day, I start bouncing off walls... but I know some people who drink closer to 20

user310756
@AndrasDeak depends on what they're saying :p

indeed

i have 4-5, plus 2 cups of coffee and water

10:17 PM
Boiiing
I drink 3 liters of water.
Or litres, in Old English

You got extra kidney, not fair.

the average human has less than two kidneys
so technically I only have slightly more than average

Lol

I'm not apologizing for being Superman.

user310756
@ArtOfCode if they have a transplant they can have 3

10:18 PM
@M.A.R. get it right please... it's Ye Aulde Englishe

@ArtOfCode not enough r's that I can't hear. -1

Yre Aurldre Engrlishre

That's mooo like it

user310756
@ArtOfCode I'm curious. Are you completely ignoring me?

@YvetteColomb No, not that I know of :P

user310756
10:21 PM
@ArtOfCode ah good :)

aw you can't see other people's prefs tab without a diamond, boo
it's always amusing seeing who's ignoring who

so much popcorn

I'm looking away

oh that's good to know

the most I had was something like a dozen users

10:22 PM
@KevinB why, you gonna run for mod?

so ignoring a mod is more effective because you don't even have to tell them
:)

@ArtOfCode No, it's "Ænglisc".

Ooooooh

Hey while there's a bunch of people here:
It was suggested that when we're done with the open letter site, I could turn it into a community venue (kinda like a mix of a blog and a medium-long form feedback platform and a space to congregate)
If I did that... what should it have?

@KevinB I need you sir to teach me some life lessons

10:23 PM
Good, so that means I can ignore future mods when they're being petty and out of control and it'll send twice the message.

Well, I have nothing to say to that

@Mark still not enough r's

@ArtOfCode It definitely should have some sort of timeline function of SE SNAFUs. That way there can a historical record of any future open letters that are written and applicable.

This is where I'm at so far
@Trasiva eh, not sure that's particularly constructive. It could host other letters, though.

I want a meta mattress

10:26 PM
not sure they do those as swag yet... but you can only ask

Hm, I like it

@M.A.R. same

No Meta Mattress though, I'll stick to my sleep number

Hey. I'm not from the US; can someone help me understand why the pronouns issue is being discussed? In my experience on SO I don't recall having to use a 3rd person pronoun - @mentions and "the OP" worked fine for me the last decade. I've read through long FAQs and CoCs, but is there a typical situation the new rules are trying to improve?
I'm not sure if my cultural background makes me blind to such issues or if I just haven't come across situations where the new rules are relevant. Was it discussed anywhere?

I personally have actually never come across an situation on SO where pronouns were relevant

10:31 PM
@Nickolay No, most of the time there's no reason to use pronouns on SO, and this doesn't change anything about that

As I answered on the FAQ, to me, it's absurd that a subject like that is featured so heavily in a CoC.

They are relevant when providing criticism on answers related to how the answer relates to the question asked... but even then you can avoid them.

I haven't either. I've not came across a single SO post where it was an issue. This feels like certain individuals made a mountain out of a molehill.
7
Plenty of ways to talk to people without actually causing a pronoun snafu.

Plenty of ways to respond to a pronoun snafu without causing a ruckus, also.

Oh. Thanks! the reason I asked is that is that the supposedly improved meta.stackexchange.com/questions/335234/a-pronominal-proposal seems to acknowledge it's rare, but still doesn't explain why it exists at all

10:33 PM
Be nice, assume good intent, peace man.... The hippies weren't completely wrong.

@Nickolay Why is the pronoun issue still being discussed? Honestly, I think the community is still posting about it (daily) because of the way this was handled which resulted in very public statements from volunteers across SE.

Also true. You don't have to be an adult, just a little well adjusted and not looking to have your feelings hurt over it.

Pronouns can be avoided, aye. This CoC update, from what I can tell, is supposed to address the situations where they aren't avoided - because not everyone avoids them, all the time.

@Trasiva certain individuals are the worst

user310756
do we have to have another pronoun debate? rene flushed the last one

10:34 PM
There's no debate being had here.
We're more or less all on the same page here.

just the bihourly shitposting
@Trasiva I doubt that

Just some people explaining their opinion

s'long as it's a respectful discussion, I got no issue with it, just please don't make it not a respectful one that I have to trash :D

@Nickolay It comes up only rarely on SO because there it's mostly one on one interactions about code.

it's simple... continue to write the way you currently do. If someone asks you to use x, be respectful either by using it or moving on.

10:35 PM
@AndrasDeak And at that point, slap some wrists or put people in timeout. Assuming maliciousness doesn't do anyone any favors.

@KevinB "Be nice" basically covers that

yes

It can come up somewhat more often on extended meta discussions, or chatrooms, or sites about non-technical subject matter.

Yes, I'm aware this is the internet, but somehow SO's forgotten their own core tenant of "Be Nice" like Cerb said.
2

@Cerbrus Eh. I'm of the opinion that clarity doesn't hurt. "Be nice" works when you're all on the same page about what that means, but with a community this large it's kinda hard to make sure everyone is.
2

user310756
10:36 PM
there's been multiple issues on MSO where women have taken exception to being referred to as "he"

Coulda been approached in a much better way, but clarifying's no bad thing

user310756
Most women do not like it

@ArtOfCode I've always taken it as "Be nice... or else"

I've seen other women say most women don't care
The moment you start going into details in your site's rules, you're just creating opportunities for loopholes.

user310756
@AndrasDeak who is bihourly shit posting?

10:37 PM
@Trasiva Aye, that's the undercurrent behind any CoC. It has to be enforceable, or it means nothing.

Yea, it's common sense...or not so common sense depending how you look at it.

Common sense is surprisingly uncommon

@YvetteColomb I for one

@Cerbrus Mods are still expected to use judgement. I've always found that stating your rules clearly and then trusting your moderators to make good judgements based on them, and backing said moderators up when they do, is usually the best policy.

Until your mods are being kicked off the bus a la Minority Report.

10:39 PM
@ArtOfCode I can name 2 core points in there that don't currently apply to SE :P

Quite often happens where we have someone who's not breaking any rules per se, but has been poking boundaries for long enough that we can them anyway because "you're not breaking rules, but you're breaking the community".
@Cerbrus Aye... they used to, but now I'm not so sure, unfortunately.

I mean, I'll be the first to admit I don't tend to come in with a pillow. Usually a pillowcase full of oranges.

that's a new sentence

@Trasiva I actually like that.

It's an old military trick for beating someone without leaving marks, but getting the point across.

10:41 PM
Just say what's on your mind instead of avoiding it.

@Cerbrus just make sure you know the difference between honesty and being a jerk

like a phone book
well, not today's phonebook
becoming thin like magazines

Phone books are harder to get a hold of today, and don't have the heft

@AndrasDeak being a jerk is in the eye of the beholder

@KevinB that's just mostly ads now

10:42 PM
@Cerbrus ah, of course

Dictionaries have gotten heavier though
:D

Where I'm from, if someone's being excessively nice just not to offend someone, we don't trust them

lol

@Cerbrus Only to an extent. If I called you an asshole, I'd get pretty unanimous agreement that I'm being a jerk :P

But...I am an asshole

10:42 PM
@ArtOfCode Context: I know it's you calling me an asshole

@ArtOfCode maybe not

@Trasiva Aye, well you're a different matter :P

Haha

@Cerbrus replace me with $RandomStranger

What an asshole

10:43 PM
@ArtOfCode are we also replacing Cerbrus? Asking for completeness' sake :P

Hey, let's be fair now. I don't come to SE to hurt feelings...usually.

Who uses a dollar sign in their name

@AndrasDeak Might as well... those in favour raise their hands? :)

I may verbally disabuse certain illusions of grandeur though.

Oh right, Ke$ha did

10:44 PM
@Cerbrus I'll have you know my name is actually Ca$h Money Dolla$ the Third

What asshole named you that? :P

Well, you know what they say
Mo' Money Mo' Problems

@Cerbrus Ca$h Money Dolla$ the Second

Ouch, snorting Bang out the nose isn't pleasant

Bang? Do I want to know?

10:46 PM
@ArtOfCode Well duh xD

It's an energy drink

Ah, yeah. Can attest to that.

But no carbs, sugar, or calories. Just 300mg of caffeine

@Cerbrus play fool games, win...

Oh c'mon

10:47 PM
:P

Just say it, lol
I 3D printed a magnet with that on there.
I had it on my desk at work
Went over fine...until HR finally visited our building.

London sarcasm is very good at fool prizes

I have a Brit on my team right now. I aspire for his level of sarcasm some day

@Trasiva what flavour of Brit?

Good question, I've never asked. British enough his humor has been known to dry the air out.

@Trasiva :-( HR

He once called my stupid question brilliant, and it took me a solid fifteen minutes (uncaffeinated mind you) to realize it was sarcasm.

also a good reference:

God, it's hard to pick one out of them...but if I had to take a stab at it...Maybe something between Liverpool and Lancashire.
I'll have to ask tomorrow
And promptly be asked why it matters, lol

@Trasiva "$RandomStranger on the internet asked"
that $RandomStranger person keeps popping up
kinda creepy to be honest

10:55 PM
We need to do something about that.
fdisk C:\ y

I should rename myself to $RandomStranger

@ArtOfCode "You must come for dinner" is just mean. Putting someone through that much stress for no reason!

@ArtOfCode That buzzfeed link you shared reminds of of the "Say this not that" guideline for military folk.
Beating the onebox, 'cause it might offend someone

if you don't want a onebox, don't post the link on its own

I thought that worked

10:59 PM
I'm way too lazy to copy-paste that text into the url bar :P

Happy now?

No. I'm too lazy to click it.
But I appreciate your effort.

....

someone XSS him into clicking it

I mean, I'm still sitting here at work validating redis caching is running

11:02 PM
too late, I tricked myself into clicking it by pretending that an image will be on the other side

There was an image on the other side
Multiple images in fact

yeah, it worked

@ArtOfCode the first one... I hear that a lot 😆

Y'know...he's probably gone to bed now
Quick, throw the tea in the harbor!

who me? You dare!

11:14 PM
I dare to do a lot of things
But dumping tea in the harbor? I'd wait until you were at least asleep, lol.

@Trasiva Would that make the whole harbor one giant bowl of tea?

@Cerbrus It'd be insani-tea.

No, it'd be tea-riffic

Pretty sure AoC would call it a traves-tea.

It'd be on tea-vee for sure.

11:17 PM
spill the tea, sis!

I bet we wouldn't be-leaf his language when he found out.

The harbor would need to be emptied in it's totali-tea

It'd be quite the par-tea.

user384163
@Froopy It wasn't anything you said. Someone entered the chat that I deeply do not wish to interact with.

Does blocking in the meta chat not work?

11:22 PM
It does

user310756
@brug you ok?

@Trasiva Or a Travis-tea

I'll give you that on Cerb, only because english isn't your firs language.

Yay, time for a par-tea

user384163
@YvetteColomb Certain users have been very vocal on MSE. Some of them have even spouted overtly transphobic stuff there. Some of that stuff I have had the distinct pleasure of watching the upvotes roll in on before it was thankfully deleted. One of the most vocal of those users joined the room so I very quickly left.

11:24 PM
Oh, you already did that one
I sure hope those vocal users didn't include me, @AGirlHasNoName.

Just use a little more creativi-tea.

Nice

Q: Yet another "step down as moderator" post

Jon ClementsIt saddens me and breaks my heart in a lot of ways to do so, so I'd like to explain very briefly "why". Can't say much because I'd have to plagiarise George Stocker's resignation notice and he's already verbalised that brilliantly. It's been great being on this site (diamond or not)... I've h...

11:27 PM
@Trasiva tea-ch me!

user310756
@brug :(

First, you must obtain inner sereni-tea.

user384163
@PaulWhite Excuse me. I mean "cue"

user310756
yes

@Trasiva I can do that, I guaran-tea

11:29 PM
Guaran-tea-d ;)
Just take one steep at a time, and you'll be fine.

Well that was a faul-tea pun...

I think you'll find I was ready for this all oolong.

user384163
So I changed my username on a site and applied it to all public sites. It then proliferated to all of my hidden sites as well. Is there anything I can do about that?

@brug I'm pretty sure there's a "apply only to this site" option

I was about to say the same thing.

11:33 PM
But since this is the overmeta, that might override all sites

user384163
@Cerbrus But I wanted it to go to the public ones.

user384163
I did it on a child site

I don't think there's a way to specify between public and private though

user384163
Then why does the button say "all public sites"

user384163
grrr

11:34 PM
Hm, I never really tried changing my name

Public as opposed to SE Enterprise and teams

i've changed my name once
years ago

user384163
It also didn't proliferate the images

user384163
just the name

user384163
=[

user384163
11:35 PM
Location didn't change either

Images can be a little slow to proliferate sometimes.

Images can take a while to update on chat
CV-pls: dupe comment

user384163
I have a different image on almost every child site. the child sites still have the different avatars

That must be confusing to keep track of

user384163
Not really

11:38 PM
Mkay :P

user384163
I liked having a different name and image thematically relevant to each site

On the other hand, that makes sense

I was gonna change my name to LittleBobbyTables
But some jerk face stoled it

user384163
Whelp I guess I can in a month

@Trasiva oh that's an old joke

user384163
11:41 PM
I enjoyed it

@JourneymanGeek I know, after the earlier fiasco I almost did LittleNancyTables, but that seemed in slightly bad taste.

It would be

I mean, no one ever said I had good taste.
