You can't change all of the people all of the time, but you can change some of the people some of the time?

user194636
People want to change. They don't want to be changed.

user310756
@Raedwald hey have a read of this comment thread meta.stackexchange.com/a/335787/310756 it will amuse you in the context of Kate's answer - which is superb!

That's another problem with the strategy of decide, implement, tell the community

user310756
@ArthurHavlicek not everyone

user310756
haha I had a boyfriend tell me to "suck it up" ... he would invite me over, I didn't go.

user310756
1:03 PM
from Kate's answer

@YvetteColomb Awwwwwww

user310756
@Pëkka she is a special horse. People who meet her comment on her. She has an amazing nature!

Beautiful. It's embarrassing but to be honest I had no idea they have any fur the moment they are born!

user310756
@Pëkka that's her peeping from behind mum (it's 11 seconds)

what is this "Kate's answer"?

user310756
1:05 PM
@Pëkka yep! and their hooves have these funny protective things on them, like flower petals, but they fall off quickly

user310756
so they don't hurt mum while in the womb

How cool. Had no idea

user310756
@OrangeDog ask me respectfully and I'll tell you ;)

@YvetteColomb The length of comments threads here is absolutely disturbing.

@YvetteColomb assume good faith and I already did

user310756
1:06 PM
@ArthurHavlicek and there's a fine line between me being assertive and then being labeled aggressive or off my head

user310756
@Pëkka they're amazing creatures! I have quite a few horses I could not touch when I got them. They now love me and follow me around. And I forget that other people cannot touch them.

@YvetteColomb I had trouble with an answer I deleted since where I clumsily attempted to explain that what people expect to be "normal" can be transphobic. So I know the dangers of that thin line

user310756
@ArthurHavlicek yep

user310756
@Pëkka have you got 5 minutes?

A: We need "assume good intent" back in the Code of Conduct

Kate GregoryRecently I was at a talk where the speaker, who was confident and funny, made a tiny little aside, just a few words long, that suggested, well let's say it was members of a particular profession or people who used a particular programming language or people who lived in a particular place, were s...

1:11 PM
@YvetteColomb I find it really cool how so many experts on SO own farms, horses, or large greenhouses, It breaks the stereotype that programmers are trapped at a desk all-day
I remember rlemon give me advice on the best ways to build a greenhouse it was pretty cool

user310756
@StephanS I think a lot of programmer types have other interests. Musicians is one. We tend to have inquisitive brains. imo

@YvetteColomb I do!

user310756
a computer is not the most "healthy" thing to related to day in and day out - we need another outlet

@YvetteColomb Amen to that!

user310756
@Pëkka excellent. I want to show you 2 videos - not to watch the whole thing, but to show you something

1:13 PM
OK

user310756
I got this brumby and she was petrified

user310756
I got people to break her in and that made her worse - the guy hit her

user310756
it was bad. She came back a nervous wreck. I'll show you

@YvetteColomb 😡
@YvetteColomb Yes please!

user310756
this was her at the place before she left - she was in this yard for 8 weeks!

Right!

user310756
this is her the first day I got her back from the trainers - you can see how scared she is

@YvetteColomb I think I remember Jeff saying something along the lines that if you spend too much time around the computer you'll become like it, cruel and unforgiving

user310756
this is 5 weeks later. the other day

Do we really have to bring geopolitics into everything?

user310756
if you skip through to this youtu.be/cwTKrYpYCi0?t=383 you can see her without anything around her neck

user310756
@StephanS :D

user310756
@Pëkka this horse had the same halter on for over a year! it was scaring her face! I had to cut it off. She loves me now and I love her. <3

@YvetteColomb ❤️❤️❤️
So visibly at ease!
Beautiful

user310756
1:19 PM
Isn't she?

user310756
can you see the transformation?

user310756
It's what gives my life meaning (outside of my children)

@YvetteColomb even I can, and I am not very good at reading horses!
@YvetteColomb That is so cool

user310756
@OrangeDog can you not come in here to criticise me? It's not on ok?

exactly

user310756
1:20 PM
If you don't like me or have criticism of me, that's fine, I don't want to know

My youngest brother has a horse farm. (Or rather he's renting one and fighting to get to buy it.) You two would get along well, a similar attitude towards horses, I think

user310756
oh what sort of horses does he have and how many?

user310756
1:21 PM
yes we would. Where does he live?

@YvetteColomb he's in southern Germany, his girlfrield and he run the place. Re what sort of horses, I'm afraid the only answer I can give with my level of sophistication is... they're horses... some are big and some small 😄 and I think I saw some ponies 😄 I'll ask him next time I see him. It's a HUGE farm, I think they've got like 40, many are owned by other people and they pay for their food, lodging, etc.

@Pëkka 4 legs, long face? ;p

No horn? :(

@Pëkka which city? I'm in southern germany

shelties are the best
no offense to less funny-looking horses :P

1:28 PM
Anyway, it's really sad that Jaydles left SE, his answers are just... awesome.

@YvetteColomb He hates people who abuse their horses for profit which is not always good for business... but the only way to do it & sleep at night I'm sure
@JourneymanGeek yeah! I used to ride as a kid but was thrown off and kicked by one once and I think that was that

A horse bit me once. A pony actually

@Shadow not as far as I've seen so far!

I don't get no respect from fellow herbivoires.

@Pëkka too bad :P

1:29 PM
@Magisch Haigerloch, near Balingen

ah

Interestingly, I find that I write better when I'm consciously trying to avoid them than I would otherwise, most likely because I'm paying sentence structure and communicating my ideas an equal amount of attention.

As I still haven't managed to work it out, how do you do the quote formatting here?

\>

@OrangeDog same as in posts

1:32 PM
greater than and space

> quote here

> really? I'm sure I've tried that before

lol
>Maybe without space, you tried

not all greater than's are equal

click on help on the right (next to faq) for a cheatsheet

1:33 PM
Hey don't cheat
:D

I use it all the time ;p
The dialects of markdown are hardly consistant ;p

true

Imagine how much fun is to have N markdown processors in the same codebase...

@Sklivvz I did stumble on that answer y'day as well ....

1:35 PM
The Dialects of Markdown would be a great name for an album.

@Sklivvz "fun"
I was kinda hoping for commonmark everywhere ;p

@PM2Ring is it hardcore?

@rene Ambient electronica

@JourneymanGeek when you have 30m posts to possibly corrupt, changing to a new standard is not easy

1:36 PM
@Sklivvz So... ship it on a friday?
@Sklivvz never said it would be easy. Felt it would be awesome
Else I'd have asked for it as a feature properlike ;p

The nice thing about standards is that you have so many to choose from.

I'm more into blues, jazz, and 70s rock. But I know a good album title when I see it. ;)

Schlagers

@Sklivvz it doesn't have blockquotes

@JourneymanGeek Oh no!

1:39 PM
@Pëkka I've been chased around by a giant turkey, had a squirrel play chicken...
On the other hand. Dogs... no issues.

@JourneymanGeek Ha! Weird.

Cows are ok
But that was probably the chillest giant bull in the world

@JourneymanGeek lol

@JourneymanGeek How big was the giant turkey? And did it taste good? :D

@Autar No idea
I suspect he might have broken the knife
and he was the size of a small car

1:41 PM
our small office dog got chased by someone's cat
poor fella was trying to make a friend

@Magisch small office or small dog? ;)

Or she. I have no idea how to sex a turkey

@JourneymanGeek Bulls are not chill. But bullocks are.

> Male turkeys have brightly colored heads with no feathers, while females have a few feathers and are dully colored and better camouflaged in the wild. All turkeys have a fleshy appendage called a snood or dew bill which hangs from the beak. A male's snood is much larger and plumper in appearance than a female's

ok, male turkey

Q: I'm back and active on the site

Yvette ColombJust a note to let people know I've returned from my sabbatical. Albeit, early, due to the state of flux (actual tidal waves) on the site. This seems to be an odd post? Yes indeed is it. Amidst all the moderator resignations on this site 1, 2, 3 and the network, I thought it might be nice to ann...

that one-box ....

oneboxes make the flower sad...

@rene ?

user310756
@Pëkka please find out, I'm sure they're beautiful - horses in Germany.. I'd love to see pics.

user310756
1:45 PM
@rene yeh soz. I wanted to make a point. I'm getting too much unsolicited advice to take a break and it's not showing any signs of ermm waning . :D

user310756
@Stormblessed I've probably depressed him. I'm his arch nemesis from way back when ;) jks

@YvetteColomb don't make me make a point, please. It might involve a stick I have to borrow from the man with the Glasses

user310756
@rene hang on - which man with glasses? @Bart? He has a stick?

A smiting one

user310756
who?

1:49 PM
He?

user310756
who is He?

user310756
Cody?

He is Dutch

Yet another comment written... and deleted before posting rather than risk someone misunderstanding

@Mgetz good

user310756
1:50 PM
@rene Martijn? Cerbrus? Tim C?

@rene not good, I struggle enough with communication. Now I'm completely silenced
Honestly telling me that's 'good' really hurts
it's telling me to not even try

@YvetteColomb yes

user310756
@Mgetz what happened?

user310756
@rene one of those?

user310756
which one has glasses

user310756
1:51 PM
Cerbrus doens't wear them when he rides horses. I haven't seen pics of him not riding horses

@Mgetz that has been official policy for at least a year

user310756
you mean Martijn?

@Mgetz it is not meant to hurt you, it was meant to complement you for being aware of what you are going to post.

@YvetteColomb Was trying to share why someone's perspective while laudable and I do in principle agree paralyzes me.

I don't have glasses

Well, sunglasses I do

@rene The problem is I'm not, so I act overly conservatively rather than take any risk

user310756
@rene that's how I read it

user310756
@Cerbrus I can't stay mad at you. We fight like cat and dog, but you're my friend. Annoying that you are :P (I know I annoy you too!)

user310756
@Mgetz that's not a bad thing you know

1:53 PM
@Mgetz I've changed my commenting habits as well and morel likely to delete / not post rather then to wait for any fall out
I do tend to be rude/direct now and then

Yvette, please don't pretend we're friends. The way you go at me when we disagree is not what "friends" is.

@Mgetz we're all in triple second guessing twilight zone right now, it's a weird time

user310756
@Cerbrus ok, no worries

@Magisch no I was in it before, now it's "I'd love to even consider commenting but I'd best not"

It doesn't just take a toll on you.
Meh.

1:55 PM
:(

user310756
I know this Cerbrus. and I don't know how to fix it.

If your first instinctual reaction is: "OMFG cerbrus is on my case again!", refrain from responding.

puts a wall between @Yve and @Cerbrus (huh?? Well, one of them)

@Mgetz Is English your 1st language?

yes

1:57 PM
At least you don't have to struggle with that part then :/

I'm not diagnosed by I tick all the boxes of Autistic, so it's probably safer to say that I really don't have a first language I struggle with all of them
To me english can be like trying to handle a teflon ball coated in okra slime

?

okra slime? Should I google that?

@Mgetz that paints a picture for me.

You mean you find it hard to find proper words? @Mgetz

2:01 PM
@Cerbrus it should be safe it's just a vegetable.
@Shadow always

:/

A rather slimy vegetable. A member of the cotton family.

You doing awesome job then because I always see you posting proper words. Kudos! @Mgetz :)

That... doesn't look edible

@Cerbrus well someone ate actual sock once.
Or a hat? Let me see....

2:02 PM
@Mgetz worth keeping in mind that the topic isn't easy as well. And in text-only emotions and intent don't communicate easy, if at all.

@Cerbrus it's central to west african cuisine and thus southern american

I've never heard of it before :P

waffles

2:04 PM
@Mgetz big in India (where it's called bhindi)

@Mgetz Looks like okra?

Looks very spicy

I can smell the capsaicin in this

5 mins ago, by Mgetz
To me english can be like trying to handle a teflon ball coated in okra slime

I'm sure that it's possible to prepare appealing dishes that use okra. But I've yet to encounter one. I guess it's nutritious. It certainly contains the recommended daily allowance of slime. ;)

2:07 PM
Mmm... Teflon gumbo

@Mgetz Yea I scrolled up after typing, I only saw bhindi :)

Mind you, I don't object to slimy food on principle. Eg, I love fried eggplant, and that can get pretty slimy.

@PM2Ring The cheating way is to fry it, or use it in gumbo where the slime acts in place of cornstarch to thinken
@Shog9 it's getting to be the season where a good gumbo sounds nice

@Mgetz I've mostly had okra fried. I guess it probably needed a higher temperature. But yeah, I imagine it'd work in a gumbo.

When is gumbo not nice?

2:10 PM
when it gets thrown at you with considerable force

When you're asleep and someone dumps a bucket full of it over you.

When it insults your mamma
I'm kidding of course
Gumbo is an exemplary member of the site, and always nice

you are an infinite source of random humor :)

When does gumbo not have okra. :P
Pickled okra is also delicious.

@Catija Probably when it's from Canada :)
I was in Texas for a bit years ago, had some Canadian cheese soup and had never heard of that in my entire life x)

2:14 PM
@Catija I don't think it can technically be gumbo without okra, the same way that 'chicken fajitas' aren't actually fajitas.

@Mgetz My life has been a lie

@ArthurHavlicek why?

All this talk of okra nicely complements the southern blues music I'm currently listening to.

@Emilie I think the Canucks call it "poutine"

@Mgetz Always thought fajitas with chicken. Isn't the beef version burritos ?
Im so noob on food

2:16 PM
@Shog9 Hahaha! No not the same :)

@Emilie HAHAHA. There's a few places here now trying to do poutine and ... I don't know that they're doing it right.

French fries with gravy and cheese curds

@ArthurHavlicek no fajita is the term for flank steak

fajita is literally a cut of steak

@Catija we have a restaurant attempting it here
it doesn't taste good at all
kebab boxes are more common

2:16 PM
Beer cheese soup is another one that The South can't seem to get right

Poutine done right

French fry stew

Great way to curb a hangover

@ArthurHavlicek I mean... most restaurants here (in Texas) will use all sorts of meat but the default is some sort of beef... skirt steak was popular for a while. But I've seen chicken, shrimp, veggie...

obviously the dish fajita that involves a tortilla is something else

2:17 PM
Y'all are making me hungry and I'm stuck here eating rice cakes. :(

@user58 Dip them in chocolate!

I like rice cakes

oh wait, it's 10am
bah who cares

They're good crumbled in a bowl with milk and cream

I mean... when someone says "fajitas" in reference to a restaurant, my immediate thought is a skillet carried hot and sizzling through the restaurant to your table and accompanied with rice, beans, tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and guac.

2:19 PM
@Emilie technically chili cheese fries is a poutine of sorts, but I doubt you'd ever convince that to either party

@Catija that is what fajitas are, but that is not the original meaning of fajita

@Catija . . . Dang. I need one of those right now.

If we're going to start on food being called the wrong thing, scampi

@Catija Just like Sushi means different things in the US and Japan. In the US it refers to the type of meal, in japan it's the rice

"Shrimp scampi" is one of my favorite redundancies.

2:21 PM
@Mgetz Oh that's a thing here also, you can buy frozen poutine "bites", which is sort of like fried balls of hash browns stuffed with cheese and gravy

fajitas are just small fajas, aren't they?

@Catija I have heard ever fajitas refering this static.cuisineaz.com/400x320/…

@Mgetz the majority probably understand sushi as "raw fish", though that is changing over to "Japanese tapas"

@OrangeDog I can't speak for the majority
only me

well, you spoke for everyone, not just the majority

2:22 PM
@ArthurHavlicek There you go... so it's a... do it yourself thing... You get the meat and tortillas and other fillings and you assemble the tacos yourself.

sushi != sashimi

oh no, a football landed in the rice :p
*handegg

why is there a taco, on a fajhihhittta.

That food subject isn't nice by the way... I'm trying to loose weight

2:25 PM
YOU ARE NOT HELPING TAVERN, I THANK YOU NOT

Tavern

hands @arthur an alcoholic seltzer

Those are a hot commodity.

I've never tried one hot

Probably for the best.

2:28 PM
They're bad enough cold

@Shog9 Is that the same thing as a "cooler"?

It's like fizzy water, bad flavoring, and vodka
In a can
So, like a cheap mixed drink, except not cheap

@Shog9 e.g. alcohol for those that don't like alcohol?

alcopops

I remember having a WKD in the UK... they weren't bad... if you like fruity sugar syrup. but they're still, not sparkling.

2:33 PM
Hooch was fizzy

@Cerbrus Yup

mmm, Blue

Heh, that's what the "not quite old enough to actually drink" drink in clubs nearby
You pay twice the price of a beer, get half the quantity, and there isn't even as much alcohol in it. :P

it's 4% that's standard beer percentage
actually, more than the cheap ones

2:47 PM
5% is standard around here, for beer.

Think I started my alcoholism career on pineapple Bacardi Breezers.
Now it's Doom Bar, vodka, and goldfish bowls (not really) of Sex on the Beach, which is kind of like Bacardi Breezers I suppose...

hello

@LightnessRacesinOrbit all together?

@OrangeDog sure why not

@LightnessRacesinOrbit ruined a good Doom Bar

2:58 PM
@OrangeDog hey you started it

@SébastienRenauld I do think they should have an autism advocate look over the CoC and the FAQ. I don't consider either very friendly personally.

@Mgetz Welcome to the club
I'm pretty sure we can safely agree that most people on the spectrum would have serious issues with partly implicit rules and standards, for example
