@JourneymanGeek It seems soon enough the only ball left to kick will be the one where enough people quit that the shareholders get concerned and force change

@Magisch the answer is off-color, come on, and barely logical. Extreme cases can be a reason for expediency, not lack of community supervision. Also, not even hinting that he gets that we want a procedure to rebuild trust and this process doesn't do that is "papering over the cracks"

@DavidA In Persian ancient folklore, there's a main protagonist called Rostam. He ends up separated from his son Sohraab, and his son grows up and ends up in an army invading Iran. The father stabs the son in a 1-on-1 fight, and the king stalls the "remedy" until the son dies. Pretty great story. A proverb originates from it, "to bring the remedy after Sohraab has passed"

@Sklivvz Do you honestly think Tim's at liberty to say what he wants to say?

user194636
Well they've been quite good at saying nothing recently

Well it's not clear, it's the frigging sun.

1:03 PM
@Magisch does it matter? if it's what he wants to say it's bad. if it's what SE wants him to say, it's twice as bad, as it lacks integrity
5

I guess vote on the content.

It's probably a given that none of the CMs like to see their year long work burnt with a magnifying glass

Mmmeh. I'm not pissed at bringing the remedy late, or what it's going to be anymore.

It feels almost like someone made a promise and they don't want to break it.

@Magisch I still want to think he's one who says what he wants to day, or staying quiet if he can't.

1:06 PM
@Magisch Because why use a magnifying glass when you have Napalm?

@Sklivvz but if its expidiecy - it would make sense to give as little info as possible, and leave an opening to fix things or at least break it gently

The new (revived?) SO podcast doesn't help - just seems like denial (maybe I'm just too jaded though)

@Magisch If you were in the last chatroom Tim shut down then you know he says what he wants even if it gets him in trouble

@LinkBerest probably planned before this

@LinkBerest This is a . . . uh, how can I put it subtly . . . THE MOSTEST FRIGGING TERRIBLEST TIME to inject nostalgia into the site.
YMMV.
Why is that not surprising?

1:09 PM
yeah, kinda what I meant

@M.A.R. You need to understand what people were nostalgic about first

@LinkBerest but I need to talk anyway

I know Tim, he's a great guy. I'm pretty sure he's stuck between a hammer and an anvil, but still he wanted to greet George. The only problem is that he misjudged how far beyond this kind of stuff the situation is at, already

@JourneymanGeek 80's movies
Keanu Reeves
Monty Python

@M.A.R. Cobra!

1:11 PM
Predator!
Robocop!

I have Monty Python on in the background while I code

McQuade!

oh, nevermind that just finished - switching it to A Bit of Fry & Laurie

@LinkBerest so that you can Python while you Python?

That joke was overdue

1:14 PM
I just stepped out to get a sandwich...

The late fee would be 20 bucks, John

@JohnDvorak exactly (currently I was working in C to get JVM to work with some pyspark stuff but it still counts!)

@Magisch And so, the stubborn paladin Seer continued playing on that small UO shard, even when the average online users count was 5 at max on top hours.

1:30 PM
yeah, I need a break - that's a pretty low shot

yesterday, by PM 2Ring
@Magisch If I were even more cynical than I am, I'd suggest that it's the ancient strategy of Divide & Conquer at work... But I'm too good-hearted & optimistic to suggest that. ;)

Can we get shog to unlock this because we should know if this is the company's position link?

@LinkBerest no we're not, and that's the problem.

@StephanS how would unlocking it help?

@OrangeDog you're right it's just going to start comment overflow

1:38 PM
@OrangeDog almost like all SE actions in the past few months/years.

ok i give up
talk about the turtle instead.
he's suspicious after all.

@SPArchaeologist-様 I know a significant number of British people identify as "brown", but that's not really relevant in this context

I dislike having to be the buzzkill but can we please drop discussing that tweet or any particular employee
thank you all

@djsmiley2k why is that turtle holding a launch button?

user194636
1:40 PM
seems suspicious

@rene probably because it wasn't allowed to go to the Overflow Cafe event

I'm not going to get into beyond that and it really does make me need a break so don't ping me about it, please

Sorry for that Link. Won't ping you anymore.

1:56 PM
The SO mission statement on Twitter is "Building communities where everyone who codes can learn and share their knowledge". I wonder why they never updated the one actually on SO...

@Shog9 there are some seriously dubious comments on the main post of George's resignation. If you could take a quick pass.

I need... a minute
not in a great frame of mind just right now

I understand, sorry ☹

Sorry for the heavy handed bin. I binned the entire tweet discussion because I really want to keep this chat open.

@Shog9 :/

2:08 PM
@Magisch I'm not going to complain - you even binned yourself :)

@Magisch I wish you kept that last one because as Mgetz pointed out it's not great out of context

@StephanS sorry, fixed.

@Magisch thank you

@user1306322 The timing on that is not that good. Might want to consider the effects your words have.

@Shog9 I'm sorry, this can't be fun for you.

2:10 PM
Tim's answer on George resignation has positive score. That's the one and only good thing I've seen today on SE/SO.

it was an allusion to "big brain" meme if that was too obscure

not a great time for memes

an attempt to lighten the mood

@Shadow currently +44/-42

2:11 PM
shog does it for us, but then he also says not to do things he does, so idk

lighten, as in with a matchstick? :P

as in reduce weight but retain mass

it's great to see overwhelming support for George, considering how the community tended to situate itself with respect to his stance on a lot of matters

so, distance ourselves from this planet's gravity well? :p

@Shog9 Understood. In the mists of time you and others were enormously kind when I was a new moderator -- please (all of you) look after yourselves.

2:13 PM
yea this is nothing to ruin your mood over for the entire year, just a big team vacation of sorts

@AndrasDeak George always had the respect. Many didn't agree with his position on one issue or the other, but he was always willing to defend his actions and rationale and fair to a fault. The exemplar of what SE management should have been like to actually make a positive difference instead of ... this

@Magisch yup

@Shog9 The only complaint I have about all y'all is we don't see enough of y'all unless things go bad. I trust most of you to at the very least care about the network

@Magisch I'm just glad that practically everyone sees that way

I always liked reading George's perspective on things, not because I always shared it but because it was always robust, well defended, compassionate and formulated from a desire for the best for the community

2:16 PM
@OrangeDog still, in the current mood, I expected it to be at -20 net score.

@Shadow it was -8 when I first saw it

I'm happy it's not way underwater, but I understand why people are downvoting it.
I don't think Tim meant to do this, but the answer comes close to accusing Monica of some very serious things.

@Magisch Yeah, you could say that.

@Magisch eh, its fine. Its definitely a US thing (and I'm likely extra sensitive due to the source) so :)

@SolveIt I'm not reading it that way tbh, though I think I can see how you did

2:28 PM
@AndrasDeak eh, you know I didn't agree with him much but he could at least keep discussions civil (sometimes hard to have but civil) and I respected his position was what he thought was best for the community

@SolveIt I don't think you can expect a Mea culpa out of Tim right now

@LightnessRacesinOrbit No I think we agree, that no accusation was intended but could be (mis)read

people (mis)read all kind of things these days

I like Tim. It says a lot that we haven't so much as heard a peep from SC lately. I can imagine she's resolved to never step foot on Meta again

@rene full circle, and that's why we shouldn't read tone into text

2:31 PM
Understandable in a sense, but an immovable red line in another...

@LightnessRacesinOrbit Last seen 17 hours ago shrug

Gentle reminder of what is pinned on the starboard. Let's not go much further.

Yeah no worries rene. Only objective observation.
Although I concede I didn't read the starboard :)
So, who's seen El Camino? :D

@LinkBerest just for your info: RO's can see deleted messages so be careful what you send ....

yeah, it was in bad taste so I delete it (not worth it for a joke)

2:38 PM
@LightnessRacesinOrbit I haven't even seen Breaking Bad. Did I miss much?

@OrangeDog Well, just saying it's no longer 3.0 doesn't mean it really is no longer 3.0. As far as many of us are concerned, the statement you'd replied to is correct.
@rene BB: I thought it was good. Not as good as other people thought it was.
@rene EC: A worthy epilogue to the original series.

@LightnessRacesinOrbit I am very much aware of this

@OrangeDog Just checking :D It looked like you were saying "no, it's 4.0 now", which surprised me.

A: Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow have moved to CC BY-SA 4.0

OrangeDogAs animuson wanted this phrased as a question: Are you sure you're legally allowed to relicense all content without asking the copyright holders (i.e. all contributors) individually for permission? If so, by what justification? As detailed in other answers it looks like CC-BY-SA 3.0 doesn't allo...

@LightnessRacesinOrbit I was more saying "oh you sweet summer child"

2:41 PM
@GeorgeStocker based on your recent action, I understand this never happened... or he did, and that mission isn't what you expected. Either way, I'm really sad to see you go.

I feel like we should start a go-fund-me for the CM alcohol/therapy fund

@Shadow I don’t want to besmirch anyone who works at Stack Exchange but from my perspective a solution that builds on the community we have and the people we want to welcome will require 180 degree change on how Stack Overflow operates with regards to the community. I do not have faith the CEO will make the changes necessary to ensure that happens.

@GeorgeStocker fair enough. Will you keep being active user on SO and/or other SE sites?

I deleted my Facebook profile over a year ago due them meddling in worldwide politics and selling their users private info. I decided to quit any SE activity due to the company neglecting its most respected users and series of bad actions which are surely going to only get worse.

2:51 PM
the nice part of being trapped in a Groundhog Day loop is that I get to post this quote from Beautiful Dreamer a lot.

Maybe I really am riding the turtle

Which one?

the one with four elephants on its back

@Shadow there was a scene in MIB where he says “we never just look at the stars anymore”. Moderating is a lot like that. I hope I’ll be able to go back to answering questions and helping others outside of moderation.

@GeorgeStocker cheers. I won't advise you either way, so only wish you happiness in whatever course you choose. :)

2:54 PM
I'm mad as hell but I'm trying not to care. Because my caring achieves nothing but my own sadness. Ironically it's sad to have been put in that position.

@LightnessRacesinOrbit +1

@SPArchaeologist-様 the "twice is a tragedy, thrice is a comedy" quote also seems like it applies :)

@LinkBerest Considering that the quote I linked didn't mention a turtle but you did, can I assume you actually saw that movie too?

Is there discworld movie??

yes but this is not it

2:55 PM
oh

There mini series. Mostly good

no recent movie spoilers pls >.<

There's the Hogfather

I like Sean Astin as Twoflower

Who plays The Luggage?

2:57 PM
heeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

@SPArchaeologist-様 also yes, hence my second quote :) (its actually one of the first Japanese films I ever saw)

@LightnessRacesinOrbit Earth was destroyed

actually I suppose it's remotely possible you haven't watched the Jungle Book (old or new) so

lol

Sky made multiple TV Movies, none recent.
https://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/TV_and_film_adaptations

2:58 PM
@LinkBerest and it is still one of my personal favorites.

as it opened a whole new concept of reality (and film & animation) for me - I'd also put it in that category

@Shadow multiple, Hogfather is the one I recall off the top of my head

David Jason was bad casting for Rincewind. Should've been either Eric Idle or a young version of Eric Idle. (Martin Freeman?)

The "Color of Magic" miniseries is just pretty good (I like it, acting is good, but just doesn't quite make "great" cause Ricewind)

3:00 PM
@LinkBerest Again, which one? ;)
How dare you slander the most revered wizzard in the world!!1!

Uruse Yatsura 2 - it was like a Japanese groundhog day (only not)

@Mgetz cheers, thanks! ;)

Eric Idle would have been an awesome Rincewind

There is no Color of Magic miniseries. There is a single TV film.
@LinkBerest Eric Idle was an awesome Rincewind

@LinkBerest and to be fair, I am not sure the ending didn't imply Lum wish wasn't actually granted.

3:03 PM
really, they presented it as a miniseries when I saw it (which to be fair was streaming last year)

Meh. I could never get into UY (or Ranma 1/2 for that matter). I do like her current(?) series, though.

that's fair, but the "which one" question makes no sense, as there isn't anything else

did anyone try asking users how they end up on meta to ask questions like this? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/335555/…

@PM2Ring had better stop that analogy right there...

@user1306322 many times, yes

3:04 PM
@LinkBerest not saying this isn't the case but it strikes me that Michael Palin might also have been good in that role.

@OrangeDog Ok

@OrangeDog You may want to re-read "The Light Fantastic" then.

@user1306322 Seen it more than usual lately, which is weird. Maybe I'm just on Meta more often.

@AnsgarWiechers huh?

@SPArchaeologist-様 I remember there being something in the Manga about that....but I'd have to re-watch/re-read. And I intend to :)

3:05 PM
@Mgetz a young version of Palin perhaps

I don't know if meta ranks high in certain google queries or these users just ask on every result of the first 10 pages or what

@LightnessRacesinOrbit not weird, these days many people from SO visit MSE to see what's going on, and when asking question don't notice they're not on SO.

@OrangeDog Remember where Great A'Tuin was headed, and what happened there?

@OrangeDog well my best candidate from the pythons for Ridcully is dead... RIP Graham Chapman, may he freeload in heaven

@Shadow mm yeah ok

3:06 PM
in which case we'd have to use Cleese

@LightnessRacesinOrbit average rate was 10 off topic questions per day or so.
Dunno how many these days.

@Mgetz Chapman was always too skinny for Ridcully

@OrangeDog holywood (misspelling intentional) can fix that

I think Cleese would have made a very good Arch Chancellor

@LinkBerest Beautiful Dreamer does not have a manga version if that is what you mean. Mujaki does indeed appear in an episode roughly based on a manga chapter but that is. The movie plot isn't referenced in the manga. That said what I meant is that after all her wish was basically for everything to just never change - and the manga basically ends that way.

3:08 PM
@AnsgarWiechers I'm not seeing how it's relevant to anything I've said recently

lol...Monty Python presents The Colour of Magic

even the actual manga ending is basically a loop to the first episode, so I wonder if that wasn't actually planned in a way.

@SPArchaeologist-様 alright, now I really have to re-watch it (its probably been 20 years since I watched it last)

@OrangeDog Wasn't "that's fair, but the "which one" question makes no sense, as there isn't anything else" in response to me? If not I apologize.

@AnsgarWiechers it was yes
I don't understand what The Light Fantastic has to do with identifying TV adaptions of The Colour of Magic

3:11 PM
@LinkBerest And obviously the last move - Lum THE Forever makes things even weirder.
(note: I mean the movie that was intended to be the final one - before the 10th anniversary special was made)

I first watched that as a 12 year old and all these years later - I'm still not entirely sure I get that film :)

@OrangeDog My question "which one" was in response to LinkBerest saying "Maybe I really am riding the turtle", which from my understanding referred to the Diskworld novels. "The Light Fantastic" is the second part and conclusion of the story started in "The Color of Magic".

Yeah, I never watched the "Always my Darling" or whatever the tenth anniversary one was called
I didn't have Laserdisc and could never find it in a different format
@AnsgarWiechers nah, I was just mixing mythologies there (cause if you ask me which turtle I'm riding there can be only one answer)

Oh. Please disregard then.

@LinkBerest there are 4 original movies, then a movie adaptation of the manga ending and then an anniversary special - the one you just named.
Lum The Forever is the fourth of the original four movies
It was also probably planned to be the last one given the plot

3:19 PM
Yeah, I remember Lum trying to make Ataru say "I love you"

on a kinda related notice.....

eh, maybe I'll look up the tenth after I find the other 4 (there all over so that shouldn't be hard) but I heard it was really bad

A little something I did last year.
Not really satisfied with the colors but she is still fairly recognizable.

@SPArchaeologist-様 that's really good. I can't tell what it's made of?

you see the logo on the Winter Bash site from last year? You can actually edit that.
Last year, people had some fun using that knitting tool to draw things. I turned some old Lum pictures into knitted versions.

3:25 PM
oh wow, I didn't even know that was a thing till now, thanks for linking that to the chat

@StephanS see this

Q: Winter Bash 2018 Knitting

eLRuLLThis year's Winter Bash got us great hat challenges, but it also gave us a very nice tool for knitting on the main Winter Bash site. Is there a challenge related to this knitting tool? Here is my knitting and it would be amazing if you could share yours too.

that's really cool

why did I know this would be there meta.stackexchange.com/a/319970/526631 smh

omg, that still works? O.o

@Zoethetransgirl to be fair, with a little scripting you can actually re-enable hat display on the site too....

3:29 PM
I'm never here for those things (Winter is crazy level of work here; except I always get the Christmas hat cause that is the most boring day of the year for me). Didn't realize how much I was missing out on

HATS!

^ see? @Zoethetransgirl

user351483
Is that a buttwaffle?

@Snow You've never seen a waffle chair before?

user351483
Ohhhhh. Of course not, I'm British.

3:32 PM
British people don't like waffles?

but since they took off part of the API, you cannot change hat now.

user351483
Yes, but we haven't progressed to making chairs out of them. We've barely learnt how to make them out of spaghetti.

Only see what was already there last day of Winterbash.

Poll: do you think there will actually be Winterbash this year?

ah, then your definitely not ready for the pizza chairs (real thing)

user351483
Yes, there will. There's going to be a hat for "Last surviving moderator".

At this rate I doubt there will be one left to claim that prize.

@JohnDvorak yes, I'm sure there will be. Up in SO management ivory tower, everything keeps going as usual. That podcast is all the "proof" we need.
@AnsgarWiechers worst case Shog will take it.
Or Adam, who was a moderator before being hired...
So purely technically speaking, might still be considered a moderator. :)

We... have come to a point were I wouldn't be so surprised to see Shog retire. He seems to be pretty tired lately, and I can understand him.
And I hope we don't lose him too. Who would we annoy then?
2

@SPArchaeologist-様 part of me hopes he will, as this must have impact on that ivory tower. But other part want Shog to be happy, and no idea if such a move will really make him happy.
Same for Tim and John.

3:39 PM
@Shadow did you listen to it? Do I need to?

(and others! Not going to count the "good people" now :))
@rene didn't listen, but not relevant.
Publishing it now is as if nothing happened.

That podcast was recorded months ago.

btw.........

@user58 So? They could keep it in the drawer.

3:40 PM
@Tink!

@rene I did it's just commentary on compilers and etc.

@Shadow yep, and I repeat... where?

@StephanS hmm

@SPArchaeologist-様 gone :(

@Shadow I feared so.

3:41 PM
@Shadow probably a different team, and on a schedule.

@rene It wasn't bad, there just wasn't anything insightful

You know what.... I'll try Twitter. (for the parrot)

@Shadow Last I heard, she didn't want to get involved. I wouldn't bother.

@user58 I don't want her to get involved. Just bit worried for her.

@Shadow She seems fine. She's active over on IPS.

3:48 PM
No more chatter about specific employees or twitter here please.
