Ignore the votes, @Yvette. Try as you might, you'll never reach the lofty bar set by those of us here at SE, Inc. Er. What's the opposite of lofty? Aaanyway... I need a break. I can't imagine you're in any better shape. Go enjoy some nature, listen to the insects scrabble as they build their empires oblivious to their inevitable destruction, consider how similarly foolish all of us must look to those greater. Enjoy your time while you can, don't rush in where angels fear to tread... – Shog9♦

Is there any rule that prevents question in CS to give examples connected with politics?

@Evil CS?

Computer Science.

Evil Computer Science.

I have recently seen a simple graph question, with bipartite matching, but I am used to names like A1, A2, B1, B2, not like Trump and impeachify, which in my vocabulary looks like very small social engineering. Nothing big, should I ignore it or edit examples?

s/Trump/Clinton
...oh, they already used that one too ;-P
way to ruin my joke, Mr Jones

12:56 AM
@Shog9 Sorry, I do not understand what it means

@Evil It's a joke about American politics.

@Evil In all seriousness, I wouldn't bother; it's a light-hearted example and perhaps aids in memorization somehow. If someone complaints, it can be rewritten easily enough.

@Gryphon thanks

Q: Matching each unique pokemon with a unique move

mrtannerjonesBackground: There are 832 unique Pokemon in the Pokemon universe, and There are 728 fighting moves that the Pokemon can collectively learn. No Pokemon can learn to do every fighting move, and some Pokemon can only learn one. The average Pokemon can learn between 10-30 fighting moves , and Mos...

The question, if anyone's interested

@Shog9 thank you, just checking.

1:00 AM
@Shog9 with actual pokemon... or fake ones ;p

Hardcore sed joke ;) didn't realize he would participate

One never expects Shog ;p

1:51 AM
lol...today's inappropriate ad is just great considering everything going on

2:03 AM
and one more person who I followed on worldbuilding is gone - man this was not the day to login to SE

Yeah, it's very sad how many people are leaving. I get why they're doing it, but it's sad to see them go.

@Gryphon Its not just how many - its who and why

yeah, this person was a pretty regular contributor (with some neat questions)
JBH leaving was still the biggest shocker though (outside the firing itself)

2:19 AM
@LinkBerest As an ex-Interpersonal Skills mod, the irony of SE refusing to change their ad policy does sting me a wee bit. :P
Though to be honest, I would be overjoyed if the biggest issue facing the network right now was ads. I would be over the moon if I could spend the day complaining about ads.
. . . Does that make me a bat? [content warning: article contains large image of wide-eyed bats]

Well, my answer last August (wow, a whole year of this) and then my question last April after those fiascos should have prepared me more
was still shocked to see JBH walk away
@HDE226868 heh, ain't that the truth

@HDE226868 or the most we had to worry about were OT posts ;p

Ah, when the worst of the day was: "This looks a better fit for (random SE site here)". OP: "But I asked there and they closed it!"
(assuming as we get that on WB often enough)

@RobertColumbia we should allow fun. This post's point is certainly clear in its version that you reverted it away from. — Stormblessed 55 secs ago

4:41 AM
Nice to have normal problems 😆

For reference: SE's policy on fun on Meta. It's also worth noting that this post was made in 2012, back when fun was much more likely to be well-received by the community, and the current consensus is to leave these past posts as they are. — Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog 1 min ago

5:14 AM
@HDE226868 some kind of dramatic irony eh?

5:30 AM
(one of my favourite scenes in a TV show ever ;p)
Which is why dealing with spammers is fun :D

@ArtOfCode thank you! This line is just brilliant.
> // Respect backoffs, not just pronouns.

Is anyone surprised if you remove 3 lanes from a 5 lane highway, things might get jammed a bit?

@rene yes
The one approving it.

sounds fair

7:39 AM
@rene Sounds like the council here

drinking game: take a shot every time a new post has the words "Monica", "pronouns", or "CoC"

step 1. Go out and do traffic survey, in the middle of half term, in the middle of the day, when traffic is typically at the lowest anyway.
step 2. base all predictions off this 1/2 hour worth of traffic
3. be supprised when on monday morning at 8am things are bad.

Seems plausible

lol

7:47 AM
@StephanS I feel like it would be quicker to just stab yourself. The destination is the same, you just get there about five minutes quicker.

Nah, you can survive stabbing yourself
you will not survive drinking 2500 shots in a day

lol

@Magisch not if you're doing it right

@Magisch I've met some people who might.
Some people have alcohol tolerances that are inhuman.

That would have to be someone who is physically unable to absorb ethanol at all

7:51 AM
@Magisch Pretty much. I still think I know people like this.

@Gryphon we'll get rid of those people by adding the term "freedom of speech" to our list

@StephanS Alternatively, we could add "LGBT". That'd kill anyone.

Add "farewell", "thanks for all the fish", and "sorry to see you go" too.

@Shadow what a madlad

sadlad

7:55 AM
@Shadow Where did the fish thing come from? I'd never seen it before this whole thing blew up, and now it's on every resignation post.

@Gryphon Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

@Gryphon I just noticed that

@Gryphon what @Journeyman said

@JourneymanGeek It's been a while since I read those. I should reread them.

7:56 AM
@Gryphon true, do it ;)

Now, if I could just find some time to read...

@Gryphon sleep one hour less

@Shadow You are operating under the assumption that I sleep.
I'm a university student, so that assumption has some flaws.

I asked this on php but no one answered
I'm getting tired of programming to Lofi hip hop. does anyone have a playlist recommendation they code to?

@Gryphon actually.... I slept more as university student than I sleep these days.
(5-6 hours vs. 4-5 hours)

7:59 AM
@Shadow What program were you in?

@Shadow so... In class? 😆

@Gryphon Math/Computer Science (B. Sc)
@JourneymanGeek that too! but also during nights ;)

8:15 AM
the newest post in meta has the words "pronoun", and "CoC", you all know the rules of the game

@StephanS We're all going to die, aren't we.

@Gryphon one could hope
I feel like that post is a dup
I don't know if the newest post is a dup of meta.stackexchange.com/questions/334443/…

8:34 AM
@StephanS well, it has a tone that seems to want to provoke. I've dupe hammered it for now but has two answers now as well.

@rene while you're at it can you put the final cv on meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315638/…

well, done but under pressure

someone answered it so I couldn't self-delete no more

@rene I find it weird to assume tone in a piece of text, it's like assuming the motivation after looking at a painting

@StephanS I'm just cautious I guess. I've been shown so many comments and posts over the last few weeks that were causing discomfort that I lowered my bar on what I think should be allowed quite a bit.

8:47 AM
@rene I don't blame you for that, it's become a crazy, but you're doing a great job. You should relax with some Yorkshire tea, it's fantastic.
either that or chai tea, that stuff is great too, just add cocoa powder and heavy cream.

I had another coffee ...

spell check: "it's become a crazy place"

This still has another ten minutes to upload (Australian internet being so - erm fast) But I thought it might interest people and probably dissuade tourism, but still interesting.
I gotta fly - I'm still going through my vids! I come home and watch my horses again :p
@RobertHarvey yeh that wasn't meant to be the shit storm that it ended up. I'm putting it behind me. I'm still on a break, but want to share the interesting things in my life. But I'm avoiding reading chat, so dropping in videos and flying out - not to be rude and ignore people, but to stop myself getting involved and causing more chaos. :) Later \o

@YvetteColomb Thanks for letting us know, we enjoy your videos, they're fantastic. Now let's talk about filming while driving..... mmmm

@StephanS me no do that! I use a back drop - it's illegal to handle a phone whilst operating a veh-hi-cle
I break no laws in the filming of my videos.
I have quite a few new ones.. there was a motorbike disturbing my horses and they ran away like a group of chickens
I have another horse who''s much cleverer than me and would not approach her feeder - how did she know a poisonous snake was under it?
I figure we've all been through so much trauma - all sides - all of us. I want to share some better and totally irrelevant things for anyone who is interested. I don't mean to be presumptuous - I'm sure not everyone is interested. But anyways
anyway I need to leave now and will return with another video on another day \o

9:03 AM
o/ have a great day!
@YvetteColomb presumptuous? Pish posh, after reading through meta post videos about horses are a lovely thing to help chill out.
something that isn't lovely to see is another inappropriate ad meta.stackexchange.com/questions/335497/…

They're using an ad network. If you want an inappropriate ad, use any site they've enabled it on in incognito mode and refresh a couple of times.

@Magisch ad networks I've used in the past had settings to let you filter this type of thing

They still do but there isn't one around that isn't incredibly sloppy with categorization
part of why I have adblocker everywhere. There isn't an AD network that isn't regularly hacked, used to spread malware, susceptible to miscategorization, etc.

there was a problem with that on acouple of the SE sites

The ad networks have no direct incentive not to be crap, because their customers (us) are a captive audience.

9:18 AM
look if SE what to up their standards for what this site is they should lead by example.
It shouldn't be that hard for the marketing department to find an ad service that lets them green light ads before they go out
spell check: "if SE wants to up their"

@Magisch I disagree with that, actually; google as an ad provider does a much better job than the competition once you tag your ad desires properly
all hell breaks loose if you allow anything, though, but you'd expect that

there has to be a lot of ad services that filter out adult content because sites with the target audience of kids have ads on them

@SébastienRenauld never seen a site that uses google ads that didn't have reprehensible product on their ad selection. Also you probably need a calculator to count how often they've been compromised

9:42 AM
why was this marked as a dup to a younger question, that also had less traffic.......

@Magisch I have, although the website was large but had a very narrow audience
it allowed them to literally nail the ad selection

@SébastienRenauld you'd think an individual SE site would be the same

@Magisch thanks, left a comment

@OrangeDog Do they not use the same ad setup for all sites?

@SébastienRenauld I use the same ad setup for all sites - ublock origin

9:49 AM
@rene why did I know this was going to happen?

If the argument is: you closed this because you don't like it I'm out.

@user1306322 built-in in opera GX

is it really?

Yup
@rene I don't see a similarity either, tbh. I see a broad stroke of "maybe the same" but this question is specific whereas the dupe you linked is generic

oooh gamer browser... idk about any of that...
it's a preview

9:52 AM
No, it was probably closed because questions have just become parodies of an old question

@SébastienRenauld that is a good argument. Go re-open vote it

@user1306322 The "gaming" features I actually use for more sane uses. The memory limit is great, for instance, as we both know how webkit behaves re: memory
Not enough rep to do so

get some rep then

no idea about webkit, I've been using firefox for >10 years

Some would argue that locking just because "maybe a long-shot of a duplicate" was the initial problem tbh
@user1306322 I'm waiting for firefox to sort out its memory leaks on the dev version

9:54 AM
also I've got 8 gigs of ram and ssd for swap so I never notice even if my total memory usage is in tens of gigabytes
@SébastienRenauld what kinds of leaks?

@SébastienRenauld I don't know, a specific question can be answered by the generic versions

I've been more keen on firefox as well, also because I'm very familiar with servo and the language it is built in
@StephanS No disagreement there; the issue was with the dupehammer

gotcha

@rene reminds me of game critics comments youtube.com/watch?v=Hnd8NC4YRmA

If you know you're going to end up voteclosing it with just one vote and it's not a clear duplicate, wouldn't it be better to hold for a token vote or two from other people

9:57 AM
Trust me, I know what I'm doing ....

idk, my parents told me to never trust a flower

I don't know, I'd much rather have, you know, a quorum over a long-shot dupehammer

others can reopen, it's fine, the process is already set up and it's working well

@SébastienRenauld I mean it wasn't all rene, I'll take some blame. I did suggest it.
2 hours ago, by StephanS
I don't know if the newest post is a dup of https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/334443/does-stack-exchange-insist-on-a-special-language-for-posts-please-describe

it was already reopened with another gold badge owner meta.stackexchange.com/posts/335524/revisions

10:07 AM
Case closed then

or... reopened

lol

@user1306322 shakes all petals

last time that happened I received damage
but you know, I'm as determined as ever to persevere

I think Rene is just happy that we're all so bright

10:17 AM
(glows with cherenkov radiation)

People, I wanted to append a Q and A to the FAQ on the COC, but there seams to be an edit pending already, so unless I magically gain another ˜100 rep I can't suggest the addition. Anyone willing to help in including this comment from Cesar M as an answer, with an appropriate corresponding question? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/334900/…

@Luuklag that pending edit got 1 approve and 1 reject
so it can go either way

@rene famous last words

seems like a balanced edit

@user1306322 yup, not a dupe.

10:21 AM
@Shadow no, this is my last word: Wizard!

@rene too late, I won't be around when you'll say it

I know, I saw

Unless you quit before I post my farewell...
(I'm still around until then, kind of Shadow Grace Period)

I don't involve myself into close-reopen debates if it's not blatantly obvious anymore

@Shadow No!

10:26 AM
usually when it wrongfully happened to be was because I asked an obscure question which nobody can quickly judge if it's a dupe or not, so they just close and err on the side of "if the user doesn't care, all the less work for the reviewers"
I dislike that approach as a user but I can't disagree with its usefulness to the current state of the community
it's the same as nuking entire comment threads if only a couple are derailing and 80% of it is fine
feels bad but keeps things afloat
we don't live in an ideal society unfortunately :p

SegmentFault is starting to look better and better each day

@StephanS is that one of the proposed but unused names for SO back when it was founded?

@user1306322 it's the Chinese clone of SE cough cough I mean a totally original idea and is brilliant

(idk about anything chinese at the moment considering current controversies with corporations and states, if that wasn't a joke)
oh it's a real site but it doesn't load for me

10:34 AM
yea that's as much as I could scour google for any preview, a tiny jpeg
not even a cached version loads

@StephanS It's design looks an awfull lot like that of SE. It loads for me btw.

see, availability is a concern :p
I remember when the government banned github which lasted for like 6 hours, clearly realized all of its infrastructure depended on developers being able to access it

@Luuklag what do you mean it's totally original, it's design was so groundbreaking it set the standard for QnA website design 10 years before it came out, SE copied it.

@StephanS No! to what?

to you leaving, one would presume

10:38 AM
@user1306322 these days I try to assume less than before... :)

@StephanS ....

I dropped the usage of the word "assume" in favor of "presume" to avoid unnecessary ass jokes

"I post my farewell"

Actually SO was kind of .... heavily inspired by another Q&A site which ... made a very different set of mistakes....
Ever heard of folks talk about experts-exchange AKA the hyphen site?

a paywall doesnt sound so bad right now does it

10:40 AM
@Magisch eh, that's what EE did

@Luuklag doesn't load for me

the accessibility to information is pretty critical

@user1306322 my ass jokes are better. :D
@StephanS get hired to SE as CEO, put end to that saga and I'll stay.
@StephanS according to Wikipedia, the other way around
Copy to China (C2C or C to C) refers to when a company in China copies the business model of a successful foreign company, especially web and other IT companies. Such companies have often been very successful, out-competing the foreign company on the Chinese market. The degree of copying varies, from simply offering a directly competing service to closely mimicking the look and feel and name as pronounced in Chinese. It is a common topic of discussion how the Chinese IT industry can move beyond simple copying and localization into more innovation. == List of C2C companies == These companies are...
China copied a restaurant from Israeli chef.
Same name. Same dishes. Exactly.

Same taste?

@rene can't know, surely not. ;)

10:43 AM
reminds me how swear words got turned into asterisks on battlenet forums except for the word "ass" because you couldn't normally mention or discuss the expansion class Assassin

This is partly because copyright infringement against foreign companies isn't illegal in china

@user1306322 whole word only? They forgot that exists? lol
"Ass Ass in the bath" could be legit

@rene I heard they both used the same php cookbook

people called her assy for short
"SSin" was discouraged

I'm pretty sure I can put the Librije signature dish on the menu of "de febo" ...

10:45 AM
those classic forums exist only in our memories now
so many hours wasted discussing nothing particular :p

@StephanS awful ...

:P

@user1306322 ASP Free Forums
WAG thread with over 40000 posts.
That's classic.
All ended when the forums were bought by some internet giant.
They tried to make the forums profitable and guess what happened?

do profitable forums even exist?

Java Programming Forum still sends me an email on my birthday

10:48 AM
@user1306322 only where matter and antimatter coexist peacefully. ;)

I don't even check my email lol

If only "close as duplicate" had been a thing over there

@user1306322 yahoo answers

@OrangeDog that's the least of a forum/Q&A problem

(checks email: a life's worth of unread spam messages; closes email)

10:49 AM
"you need to run it on the event-dispatch thread"

I don't know if I ever want to use a forum again

@user1306322 actually by some magic spam rate in my mailbox is decreasing over time.
I don't ever get Viagra spam anymore. :(

spam phone calls are the new thing

I'd guess sending emails like that needs to be supported by either someone or something, and tech just dies over the years and people forget to update the spam configs/lists, so that's why it decreases over time
I hear spam phone calls are a big issue in US
bigger than anywhere else in the world apparently

I don't ever recall any spam email get past GMail's filters

10:51 AM
it sucks because I'm the type of person that answers every phone call I get

it's weird that they haven't enabled a whitelist-only call reception system

@user1306322 my phone has this option

problem with this being done at the phone level is you can easily get ddosed

more then 50% of calls made in the US are spam

@StephanS ouch

10:54 AM
mobile network carriers have provided this feature for extra pay here for decades actually but it's a pain to set up coz you gotta use those complicated asterisk-pound codes

@Shog9 has the ads team decided to stop bothering to answer these questions? 12h and no answer...
https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/335497/todays-inappropriate-ad-playboy-model-on-biology

and what are you gonna do - add 70 phones numbers like that manually? that's not convenient at all

@Sklivvz it may have exactly missed their working hours

I mean they do come in every day

yeah I'm not paying to have people not call me

10:55 AM
12 hours is not enough time imo, let's at least wait for a full 24h
messengers have it figured out - people send you "friend requests" which you can sift through and accept only the ones you're expecting and set the "who can call me" to "friends only"
it should be exactly the same with phones but it isn't, coz it's an archaic construct
there are mobile plans with only internet and no phone call minutes included

"911 has not accepted your friend request"

or they charge a ridiculous rate per minute

12h is an eternity for not correcting shit ads like that
I could not care less about their work hours, the damage their ads do is 24/7

@Sklivvz go on any ad enabled SE site incognito and refresh a couple times, you'll get it too

Compare with "the site is down, but it's out of my work hours"

10:59 AM
@Sklivvz people don't get payed to care

Compare with "we have spam on site"... that lasts minutes. Spam ads... 12h?

if you want the ad team to be on-call 24h you'll need to click on more ads to pay for them

@StephanS if they don't care, why should I care they are sleeping?
