1:00 PM
I'm just waiting for someone to task all my fixes, and then all will be right again.

On a side note... does someone know how to sabotage an office internal speaker system? The thing is ... broken ... and sounds like a dying person a ventilator :/

@TimPost I much you pay?
@Tinkeringbell did you.. check... if there's really a dying person somewhere in there? ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I'm pretty sure ;)

"pretty sure" isn't enough.... go check! :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Go check where?
behind the speaker?
it's creating this static noise... really really annoying

1:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell I once put a screwdriver through a speaker at work to silence it. Pretty effective, the office liked it, the repair-guy not so much ...

And on the day I left the headphones at home :(

@Tinkeringbell in the speaker! Humans can be really small. :D

@rene Hmmm... I'd have to find a screwdriver.

best to find someone to do it for you..

@Tinkeringbell this is why I stash headphones everywhere

1:06 PM
envisioning @rene driving over to @Tinkeringbell's office and helping her mute the speaker
oh wait, you're both in Europe, no?

any cable you could cut?

Let's see... There's zipties, scissors, crochet hook, my fountain pen, two or three ballpoints, a pencil, eraser, a notebook, an empty lunchbox, an umbrella, cellphone charging cable... but no screwdriver in my backpack :(

If it's 6-8 hours of drive, surely you can do it!

@Derpy Probably behind the panelling ;)

@Tinkeringbell what?? No crumbs of something you ate? :D

1:08 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard You can't even drive for 6-8 hours across the Netherlands if you keep going in one direction ;)

Reminds me of a Quest... lol

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Nope. I like to keep my bag clean :)

10 points if you find the screwdriver!

@Tinkeringbell then the "sword in the stone" replica with the speaker and a screwdriver / pair of scissors is your best option

@Derpy I'm afraid the scissors are small and won't do enough damage :(

1:09 PM
@Derpy I'd just throw the umbrella on the speaker

Also, I'm afraid of damaging my good pair of scissors
@JourneymanGeek Well, have you got any stashed at my current office location then that I could borrow?

@Tinkeringbell use the scissors to cut the umbrella. Use what you cut to tightly wrap the speaker. Silence achieved! :P

Yeah, except that there's more than one speaker :/ They're located at intervals across the ceiling and every single one is doing it :/
I just found out by having people from other areas complain as well

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard yeah, I think I'm close enough ....
@Tinkeringbell can't you open up the systeem plafond and unplug it?

@rene I'm too short :(
I think even the taller co-workers won't be able to reach

1:14 PM
Stand on chair/table?

Just build a stair with office tables and chairs
calls 112

At my work place we have one switch that we have to turn on/off with a broomstick.

Yeah, I think calling 112 first is the way to go if you're planning that.

Sounds like a good way to avoid having to hear the noise.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Lemme guess... you have a workplace witch to go with the broomstick?
@Mithrandir If you're lucky, you'll never hear anything again... or end up in ICU continually hearing that noise if you're not.

1:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell If you can get to one speaker in a closet, just connect grid voltage to the wires (they usually go in series). This will also probably fry whatever is driving said speakers, but from what you said, that would probably be an added benefit.

crude but effective

Tim is always effective.
That's the switch ^
2.5 meters high.
@Tinkeringbell she turned into Stone and changed name to Tim. :D

@TimPost Hmmm... Maybe I can reach one in a conference room. Those have lower ceilings.
Now I need wires to connect stuff.

yelling at @Tinkeringbell's parents for not teaching her to not mess with electric wires while she was a kid
:D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Storytime!

1:21 PM
Story? Where? :P

@Tinkeringbell maybe this is the moment to start the live feed so we can see what will happen ....

So... my dad always promises me he'll teach me stuff. Fixing a flat bike tire, connecting a lightswitch, how to maintain the car, paper a wall, build a shelve, whatever mundane manly household chore you can think of, he promised he'll teach me.

He's never done any of that. Two years back, I noticed a lamp post we have outside to light the back alley was damaged, the wires were exposed to the weather. I told dad, he fixed the wiring just before my parents went on vacation.

During vacation, it started to rain, dad hadn't properly sealed something and moisture got into the lamp, shortcircuit
So yeah, my parents never taught me not to mess with stuff, cause messing with stuff is the only way I'm going to find out!

oh, sad story...

I still use that story to bristle his hairs when I want to be annoying :P

Well, guess you can learn yourself some of the things, but your father won't like it at all....
Guess he's just being really and utterly old fashioned.

1:29 PM
I flagged your dad for violation of the new Code of Conduct ...

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Actually, he does want to teach me things, but then ends up doing them himself because 'it's faster' or 'you weren't around'

@Tinkeringbell nah, if he really wanted he would have done it long ago...

In this case, he picked my brother because he's taller. Apparently the fact that we store a ladder in the shed doesn't cross his mind
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Oh, I did figure out how to fix flat tires and paint already ;)

@Tinkeringbell I learned many of those things by holding the flashlight

1:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek Heh... I now imagine dad painting the front door (which is usually done on sunny days in spring/summer) and me holding a flashlight :P
@rene Ehhh... Our real life 'at home' Code of Conduct is very dissimilar to SE's one :P

My dad used to repair TV's as a hobby. He did teach me how to blow up electrolyte capacitors. Then my mom did teach how to clean-up the mess ...
3

@Tinkeringbell "Be nice to Father and Mother, or else..."?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard "You shall make as many crude jokes as possible on a single subject"

"You shall never throw water on mom, or face the wrath of the garden hose"
"Dinner shall never be taken in quiet"
"No snacks or drinks in your room, except from the ones you buy with your own money that mom doesn't know about"
"Don't poop in the upstairs toilet"
Ehhh... There's loads more, but I keep forgetting those :P

1:36 PM
"Don't poop upstairs" (just to be sure)

You should print and frame it, then put on the fridge, or house door. :D
@rene maybe on the carpet it's allowed, who knows. Each house and its own rules. :D

@rene See... we're not smart enough to even think of that :P
Saves a lot of troube :P

So you can, in theory, poop on the floor/carpet upstairs and say for your defense there's no rule against it.... :P

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard In theory.... in practice I'd likely spend the rest of my time in a homeless shelter until I find an apartment :P

lol
You can blame your brother(s).... no? :D
I mean, nobody can prove anything...
(as plan B, if blaming the rules fails... ;))

1:41 PM
That would be mean!
I'm never mean to my brothers

One should do anything to save themselves.... :D

Okay, I confess I hated the first one for a solid 6 years for not being a sister....
but that's it, I swear!

Plus, pretty sure the parents will forgive your brothers... they're younger. :D
@Tinkeringbell you could try making him a sister... :)
Or at least treat him as a sister.. :)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Apparently I once said (quoting mom here): That'll fall off, right?
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Heh, actually, the younger one is a bit vain, so he sometimes borrows make-up or razors.. ;)

@Tinkeringbell lolllll..... rof... l.... haha... ha... choking while laughing... sorry... :D
You really told that? At what age?

1:46 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Ehhh... 5. I was 5 when he was born. And well... the umbilical cord fell off, so it was quite a logical conclusion!

Well, both my non-baby kids (daughter is 8, son is 5.5) know for certain that: 1) Gender does not change over the years, 2) Body parts don't just fall off and can't be pulled off the body, and 3) They can't marry each other. :P

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard You raised them wrong! Never played 'got your nose' with them?

@Tinkeringbell oh, you were at the birth?? Or saw it falling at home at some point when he was cleaned up?
@Tinkeringbell lol, actually no... :D

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard At home, at some point ;) I wasn't at the birth, and I didn't want to go visit the hospital either once I knew I didn't get a sister.
So the lady that came to help out at home for the first two weeks thought it was a good idea to involve me as much as possible in anything, hopefully to encourage a little bonding ;)

@Tinkeringbell not sure helping to change diaper helps in any way for a 5 years old kid, lol

1:50 PM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Hehehe diapers maybe not so much, but getting him in/out of bed, bathing him...
I think I helped with the diapers by just handing the nurse stuff
Or changing the diaper on the doll I had... I'm not sure which

Well, if you saw that cord falling, then yeah... assuming other things fall does make some sense, when you have no clue how those other things work.... :D
So sad that kids dream about so many things that can/will never happen....

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I once dreamt the moon fell down. I'm actually pretty glad that didn't actually happen

Different. You didn't want the moon to fall down. Or did you? ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Hmmmm... I don't remember the details. It may have hit someone I didn't like, or destroyed school....
Or bounced back. Who knows?

1:57 PM
The blue moon falls once???

Sorry.... I'm incapable of parsing that reference :(

There's a known children song about a princess who gets sick and wants the moon given to her so she will feel better, then the king try asking all his counsellors to do that.

How does it end? Talk about cliffhangers

@Tinkeringbell Sorry, random impromptu joke is really hard :(
(expected to be replied with "once in a blue moon"...

Ohhh... that I do get! :P
There was a smurfs movie on that

2:00 PM
@Tinkeringbell the actual counsellors give advice like "pull it with ropes", "build a magical bridge to it", etc... and only the royal clown suggests the actual solution, to ask the princess how she want to do it, to find out she wants it as medallion. :D

Then there's also Princess Kaguya... (fixed a bit wrong link)

@Somewhat Interesting... but sad :(
A bit like those early grimm fairytales

yeah... :(

Apparently as early as the 9th century, people were monologueing on the water you use for making tea: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Report_on_Water_for_Brewing_Tea
I like how following random wikipedia links often result in useless facts :P

2:10 PM
Perhaps better than following random TvTropes...

@Somewhat I've never really seen the draw of TvTropes. Guess I don't watch enough TV

@Tinkeringbell funny thing is i painted my mom's kitchen ceiling after watching dad do it for years. I can also do plumbing.... And change bulbs

I did learn to change tyres in the army.... Helping mechanics hold lights

Uhh, I can hold the ladder when someone is painting. I also can hold the ladder when someone is changing bulbs :(

@JourneymanGeek I can do the bulb thing too! I didn't even need Google for that

Same idea
I needed Google to learn to do Ethernet cabling

2:54 PM
Where you put the ends on yourself?

@Henders Nah, probably the plugging in part

@Henders gotta swap 2 strands
That's the hard part

Huh.

Ooh ethernet cable, now I remember when my friend did that too... and got the positions wrong
painstakingly troublesome

Yup
Also before I go to bed... Today's my 9th anniversary of joining SU and by extension SE apparently :)

Congratulations... That's a long time!

@Shog9 if you're watching, there's a lot of pluralization bugs in that message. Not just in the form of S's, but also the grammar of the entire first sentence. :) — Mysticial 10 mins ago

I long for the day I get a report on that from someone who isn't reading a screenshot, @Mysticial. It'll mean someone who could actually benefit from it took the time to read it carefully. — Shog9 ♦ 1 min ago

lol
That's weird, somehow Shog9's comment doesn't show up in my global inbox. But the other comments to me on the same (deleted) meta.SO post do.

if any so mod is here, I've a pending mod flag on this open bounty question. It's not a good thing to see such a question with a bounty.

@Mysticial As I recall, mod comments only go to the global inbox if posted within an hour of deletion and the mod concerned deleted the post. That question is currently visible, having been deleted and undeleted twice so far.

6:37 PM
@PaulWhite Sounds like it might be a bug in the special case handling for mod comments? IIRC, if you don't have 10k, all comments on the deleted post are hidden from the inbox. (I'm not sure about a <10k user with comments on a deleted answer belonging to that user.) So in order for the user to see a mod-comment there might be an exception in there.

FR: prevent users who have had previous accounts from receiving the "New contributor" badge

Not sure if the "New contributor" tag is entirely appropriate here. haha #StackOverflow
It's funny though because the badge asks you to be nice and all while the OP is just pulling sh1t from their mouth.

Yes. That.
Perhaps, if a user's prior account was qbanned, they could just inherit the ban ;)

@TravisJ I'm not sure the alternate account detection is entirely automated. There's probably some manual process in there before say Brad decides that the OP is being a jerk and diplomatically burns him/her on it with a straight face to everybody's amusement.

8:54 PM
@Mysticial lol
Yeah, I guess some of the metrics are only "best guess" types of approach due to the wide availability of IP addresses in general.

9:12 PM
well played c ;p
scanf leaves a newline in the input stream. fgets reads that newline and treats it as a blank line. — user3121023 5 mins ago

9:28 PM
@TravisJ we could change it to "Returning contributor".

@RobertColumbia I would be fine with that. I just think that it tends to give users the idea that new users suck, when in fact, it may be that users bypassing actions against their previous accounts who re-register are the ones that give bad impressions.
I also think that the "Too Broad" closing reason is ridiculous and needs to go, but I am still in the process of gathering evidence for that since it is kind of a large claim.

@TravisJ yes, I've come to see that black hand symbol as a "Low Quality Post Warning".

Fun fact though: the too broad close reason was introduced to make Stack Overflow "more welcoming".

9:56 PM
@RobertColumbia That was part of my appeal against using the symbol at all, "labeling users makes it about them instead of about their content".

10:36 PM
See... now no one wants to post the next message out of fear of breaking that combo streak...
Well, that failed miserably.

Cooked salmon for the first time today. Tasted very nice
@TravisJ It's a good thing we don't have NC and NARQ anymore. NARQ was itself not a real close reason.

@JourneymanGeek Again, I wasn't the one who starred the above messages, except one (originally two, but I undid one, it was too late to undo the other).

Dosen't matter.
