@b_jonas What's your main concern there? I don't see anything remotely problematic with what you're doing. Note that we can't promise to send a heads-up if we do any more changes that could break user scripts, but, that's nothing new.

I'm pretty sure we've said (in multiple places) "If that isn't working for you, use a greasemonkey script..." going back to, say, 2008? If all you're worried about are the assets (e.g. the buttons) I don't think it's an issue. I of course can't give you a blanket promise and you seem cool with that, I wouldn't worry.

Taking the whole old site design and launching your own OSQA community from scratch with it? Yeah, we'd probably need to have a talk if you did that.

But just fiddling with the UX? Meh. Whatever makes you happy using the site.

If you're using our own assets on our own sites for a user script, we're probably not going to object. I can't give a blanket guarantee there, of course, but it's definitely in good faith and pretty inline with our trademark guidance. And that doesn't just go for diamond mods.

I'll just say this, there's a big difference between not objecting to something and actively giving written permission for it. The latter, we can rarely, if ever do, because that's just how screwed up the US legal system happens to be.

@TimPost Sure. But it's better if I ask for a policy clarification, so you can't later say that you didn't notice the post and I slipped it under your radar.

Even if you don't answer, I can now assume that the team has read the email and knows about all the concerns, and doesn't delete or redact the post despite that. That's easier for me.

@b_jonas alternately you push for a firm answer and the answer they give is "no, you cannot do that" because that's the only thing they can do when pushed to that point

If they deleted it after a week, that would be fine for me. It probably won't get into the dumps, I can post a modified version with an uglier custom vote button I drew, everyone will have heard of the script by then, and I can give it to anyone who wants to install it privately.

But if it stays after I warned them about the questionable post, that's also fine.

I mean, I should probably post a version with a few sets of custom vote buttons anyway, ones that people can use on random other SE sites, not only on SE. I can draw a few simple buttons with an up arrow or plus, a down arrow or minus, a star or bookmark, and a checkmark.

I'd even use my own positioning and heights in the SVG, rather than the sparse (120,0) and (120,40) for the star, (170,0) and (170,40) for the upvote, (220,0) and (220,40) for the downvote, and (270,0) and (270,40) for the accept, so that even the layout and the CSS is obviously not a derivative of the SE design, except as much as it needs to be for interoperability.

That would solve all three of my concerns at the same time.
