@Mithrandir on the other hand - whenever someone has tried anything complex and clever , say flag weight, it has failed hard

2:41 AM
gotta love the internet.
I bought a cheap VR headset without the caliberation QR code. Googled a bit and found a super dodgy site with codes for a massive array of OEM headsets. Found the closest one, and tah dah...
turns out that the google cardboard settings were wrong for this headset

@Fabby I can somehow see what's their problem. Nothing to do with missing respect or something. You'll meet such cucumbers in real life all the time :P
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I've been asking you why you mentioned me in conjunction of @bart's statement.

3:24 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ you should try your best to get closevote powers ;p

@JourneymanGeek I am working on it ;)
You can upvote my answers

morning on a mooring ship in the moor

Now how did a boat get to the moor?

6:48 AM
It mooooved there

Cowabunga!

ugh, moderation fatigue on my site since in the morning... great...
The new motto is real: I should just downvote and vote to close instead of commenting to help OP fixing their question...

Downvote, vote to close, vote to delete. You can't fall afoul of people flagging wantonly if you never give them an opportunity to

@πάνταῥεῖ I guess he thinks more highly of you than of the rest of us.

@Magisch @Somewhat tbh, as a mod my usual reaction to moderation fatigue is... to take a half or full day away from more serious decisions

As a mod your decisions carry more gravity then as a user though

9:58 AM
yup, which is why being able to trust the folks around you do the right thing is awesome ;)

10:15 AM

Well, I took a break from moderation after this question (me: Aki Tanaka)...
AFAIK, there's no(t yet) deleted comments, since my 2 flags were declined

10:40 AM
@Somewhat Well, you won't have to delete comments if you're going to delete the entire question (though I don't think that'll happen here).. Good job staying calm and addressing the points you could address though :).

roomba will save the day~~~~~

Eventually :)

11:13 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ oh... Just for fun, and random ping. Like I do with @rene sometimes for example. :P

11:43 AM
Today was interesting
got a new passport. Didn't have to talk to a single human being ;p
they have a machine that goes "Stick in your ID" "Stick in your passport" "Ok, stick your old passport into that slot to disable it" "stick it in the scanner to make sure we made the right holes in it" "Have a nice day!"
(its also faster than doing it the old fashioned way... which we did with mom)

That actually sounds useful! But what about the picture? Or is there no picture on your passport?

@Tinkeringbell oh you can send that in online
So the workflow is, get a letter, upload a photo that meets specs online, wait a few days, get another letter, go online and book a pick up date. go to the passport machine thing and do all that

Cool!

We did take our picture and do registration at the photo place at the ground floor cause its simpler, but we don't need to.

They're still doing stuff manually here, so it means going to an office twice (you do book online so there's generally no waiting)

11:48 AM
youtube.com/watch?v=QQDN1lUBRqA there's a video of this.
I'm convinced there's a bloke sitting inside going "damn it, this one's early WHERE IS THAT PASSPORT!"

@JourneymanGeek I always get me be taken by a professional, because they have pretty strict guidelines and they need a printed one

@Tinkeringbell ya, that's why we use the one in the building they do all these in.
aww, they don't talk about sticking your old passport in and it punching holes in it

@JourneymanGeek I'll try and open it later ;) I'm on a train right now, going to that BBQ I mentioned

ah
lol no rush

First time wearing my mod hat in public ;)

11:50 AM
oh
they also do a retina scan

@JourneymanGeek nice! I think the EU is still bickering about biometric data and pricacy

@Tinkeringbell its singapore
we have exactly as much privacy as our government feels we need.

@JourneymanGeek I know :) I can remember a detail XD
@JourneymanGeek hah lol!

On the other hand

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Isn't that wonderful? Just think about it: soon this room shalt be known as "Tavern of the Wùkōng"

11:52 AM
our airports are basicaly mostly automated through.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's one of the pro's ;)

I mean, its basically something like a subway turnstile, only with 2 doors, and you scan your passport and thumb if you're enrolled in the system
SILLY THING IS the checkins are also automated

@JourneymanGeek Nice! Here you still have to be there hours early or something, just to get checked in, have your luggage processed, and whatever (I don't fly)

and won't read my indian OCI/"lifetime visa"/no, its not really a citizenship, chill card

That's a problem then?

11:58 AM
means we need an actual person to confirm, so its not entirely automagical

Ah.. but if everything is automated, there won't be a line before said person, right? :)

erm, no? ;p
But they don't let us go straight to a person!
Even if we tell them their silly machines don't read our visas

Ugh. I hate waiting in line ! Huh, why's that?

Because they don't want people going straight to the counter and not using their fancy machines.

That's stupid :P
So you'll have to try to machine first, have it sound a siren and then red flashing lights and then you can use the counter?

12:02 PM
No
it reads our passport
then asks for our visa
then fails
then we go "erm, like we said, those machines don't read our PIO Booklets. Can we go to the counter please?"

I'd not even tell beforehand, just play dumb each time... Cause a little drama :P

I <3 Changi airport

Maybe one day, "Oh, it works! Cool!"

Changi airport is a nice airport. Although it may have changed a lot since I last was there

Oh they just keep adding terminals

12:17 PM
I haven't been on terminal 4 though...

and now a mall

Ah, they have 4 now? I liked how as a relatively big airport it managed to feel small and somewhat cozy

yup
Well the old terminals are about the same with upgrades

@πάνταῥεῖ Well, Luckily until now I've never met a customer like that...
@πάνταῥεῖ I did already! :-)

Given that I'm just a pair of glasses ... how can I have a leaking nose? I'm a tissue monster today.

12:34 PM
@Magisch As much as a gold medal user (though their hammer is more selective)
0:-) ;-)
@Tinkeringbell -----^ switching to only 2 emoticons as per popular your request.
:D ;-)

@Fabby and the lack of options for a mod
its either hammer or nothing

@JourneymanGeek Not really: a stern talking to should always come before the hammer.

@Fabby for closing questions ;p
Hard to be subtle there

if the user persists after 3 increasingly stern talks: hammer.

12:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek :D

for closing questions?

True!!!!
@JourneymanGeek Can a mod still flag?

@Fabby yup, but say a spamflag is a one shot kill

if yes: dump it in the review queue and have your minions do your work for you.
@JourneymanGeek Yup.

@Fabby I use chat as a sounding board a fair bit

12:41 PM
@Fabby LOL ... I couldn't care less, but nice to see you're minding your manners! It looks so much better! /s

@JourneymanGeek I know: you did talk to me before closing one of my questions or answers on SU.

Sorry. I had to switch from train to bus, but I managed to buy new books and ice cream too :D

(Can't remember what it was, but not important enough to ask a meta Q)
@Tinkeringbell i c e c r e a m . . .

@Fabby oh well, that's "hey, you could/should fix that"

@Tinkeringbell salivating
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but maybe my knowledge was just enough to answer what I answered or the timing was off.
(to research further)

12:46 PM
@Tinkeringbell books are evil like that. I ended up with 3 of them yesterday and I don't remember consciously buying them ... sneaky bastards

@Derpy or is it you who cannot escape O_O

@TimPost Someone call in an SE employee to have Mikey Mouse deleted from chat and the SQL database, because that looks like Trademark infringement to me!
(just kidding, sorry, couldn't hold that one in!) ;-)

The best rate limit is common sense ;)

@Fabby actually with SE, and stuff being persistant...
I think its more an issue of "do people need to see that/download that"

Yeah especially as it's https so cannot be cached.

1:04 PM
erm

(which is creating problems in Africa...)

caching is local no?

So apparently you don't know:
the move to HTTPS is putting developing countries at a disadvantage,

as the local ISPs used to cache everything as disk is cheaper than fibre
with https everywhere that's not working any more...

1:05 PM
That's the first I've heard of that

(and a real bummer for developing nations: thye won't be able to catch up)
@JourneymanGeek I work in Africa...

You do?

Well... I work for a Cloud Service Provider and I have projects in: South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Italy.
:D :D :D

@Fabby on the other hand, there's a good reason why everything is https if it has a password...

1:07 PM
All those are developing nations!
@JourneymanGeek As long as there's choice: it's a good idea.
Unfortunately, it's becoming less of a choice nowadays...

@Fabby though, that's somewhat mitigated by localish CDNs?
and SE makes heavy use of....
I think its fastly now, used to be cloudflare
and even italy has CDNs. And Buffalo.

I was just kidding about Italy and Dubai...
@JourneymanGeek and the answer is: no
It's a real-world problem...

For those people thinking I'm a real parrot, I look much better in real life ;)

Hi all. I had a feature-request I was going to post on Meta, but a search suggests the same thing was asked for before, and turned doen - but that was in 2012. Is it the 'done thing' to reopen such requests? (It's actually something that was suggested by one of the MVM&R users, but which I think would be useful)

@NickC What request?

1:49 PM
@Mithrandir spotting questions/titles posted in ALL CAPS and either stopping them, or throwing up a "please use sentance case" request

You could make the request again, but you'd want to acknowledge the 2012 request and explain why it's worth being made again, including explaining why the reasons not to do it before don't apply now or are outweighed by other factors
basically, give people a reason not to just close it as a dupe

Is this later feature request useful?

Q: Adding "all capitals in the question title" to the quality filter

FlykSo, the guys over in Charcoal HQ have been working on a Smoke Detector that detects potential spam so it can be flagged quicker. One thing that has been noticed is the number of posts that get raised with an all-caps title. Here are some examples of things that have come through so far today - ...

Q: IT'S CAPS LOCK DAY

DoorknobOCTOBER 22 IS INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY! UNFORTUNATELY, SOME DO NOT RECOGNIZE THE GLORY OF THE ALMIGHTY CAPS LOCK. THEY SAY IT SEEMS "OBNOXIOUS" OR "LIKE SHOUTING" OR SOME NONSENSE. @AnneDaunted I think it makes sense unless there's a counterpoint

I THINK THIS IS A HORRIBLE IDEA. HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THE URGENCY OF MY PROBLEM IF IT DOESN'T STAND OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB? I PROPOSE WE ONLY IMPLEMENT THIS IF WE ALSO GET <BLINK></BLINK> TAGS AS COMPENSATION FOR OUR LOSSjmac Feb 6 '14 at 8:35
i'm enjoying these comments a lot

2:10 PM
@AnneDaunted I find they usually get flagged as low-quality anyway. An alternative would be for the edit box to have a "Convert to sentance case" button that would do it automatically...

@Tinkeringbell there you go

That does look like me! :D

(pause button not part of parrot)
@Tinkeringbell it's also a really good copy of the classic Lego parrot

Is it rude to edit too many posts on MSE (clogging up the active questions list)?

deja vu on MSO...
Not sure if it's "rude", but as always, it might annoy some people who prefer "active" sorting.

@AnneDaunted well, I noticed ...
@Somewhat you mean this one but Anne is not on that level of edits

My edit finger always itches but I have received criticism when I edited posts every two minutes on other sites. I don't like mass edits when it is only a retag or adding a newly created tag.

I will restrict myself to only a few at a time. And no pointless edits (like editing a closed, downvoted, recent off-topic question with no answers, for example).

There was one instance when rene edited questions to delete tag.

5:47 PM
yes, guilty

You should have taken help from other users.
Let's share guilt :D

I accept no help

Why?

Because of halp plzzzz probably

Because I'm grown up now.

Isn't it part of being an adult to accept help from others?

Is it?

@AnneDaunted No. Ye older you get, the more you'll deny it :D

The older you get, the more help you need

I don't want to claim I behave as an adult ...

5:53 PM
@AnneDaunted Physically maybe, mentally usually not
@rene Me neither

optimist

Optimized

you'll need young people like me to remind you of all you are forgetting

I am not suffering from dementia, but aching ankles.
That's ageism at it's worst :-P

On the grease-monkey case it probably annoyed me enough to get it done in one seating but I didn't consider making a meta-post about it being time well spend for those that would have to read and answer it.

5:56 PM
Did I forget that someone just reminded me to not forgetting something...

Is it happy hour?
I better prep some dinner

@Somewhat Did you find a knot at your handkerchief :)

oh...

Have there ever been efforts to basically flag ban users who consistently vote to close questions that end up going through the review and stay open?

Not that I'm aware of
But if it exist I would be banned I guess

6:06 PM
@CharlieBrumbaugh Why so?

the recent meta post on Outdoor.SE

as most of my CV's never lead to a closed question. They do age away

Basically on outdoors.se of the last 16 questions to go through review 1 was closed and I am getting tired voting to leave open again and again
Especially when we do the same questions 2-3 times
@πάνταῥεῖ see above

You could run a SEDE query to see how many posts go through multiple close/re-open phases and/or multiple reviews. On the latter we don't have user info: maybe useful: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/242618/…

Isn't that a same user cannot vote to close more than once on a same question?

6:13 PM
@rene Funny thing is that I am #5 on that query, but at the same time I try to leave as many open as possible and edit them to be on topic

@Somewhat Other users see old possible duplicate comments and vtc all over again or see comments and go off that. Have been trying to flag comments but users are rather impressionable
@rene There is no way to find out who vtc first if they are left open from the queries since close votes are not stored

yeah, that info sits only in the internal SEDE instance. That isn't public.

Timeline doesn't work?

For first flagger? No.

6:20 PM
Ah, review initated from flag, not direct close vote.

You need SE staff to answer that question about prolific close voters. Assuming they agree it is a problem
I expect Shog9 to have a ready made query for that. Maybe he or someone else from staff want to run it Outdoors ...
I like that joke.
and now I'm really off to make dinner

@rene We're really badly missing him :(
@rene Goede eetlust

@πάνταῥεῖ It's 'eet smakelijk' ;)

@Tinkeringbell Ah THX! Google translate is s**t :P
@Tinker You're dutch, or just more polyglot than me?

rene, Tinkeringbell, and Bart walk into a bar....
the end.

6:34 PM
Bart might loose his glasses in a brawl
And a tooth or two :P
I am sitting at the counter, and discuss the scene with the bartender ordering another double shot of whiskey :D
^^ @rene @bart @tinker

@πάνταῥεῖ Yep, Dutch ;)

@shadow Well, just for the fun and relationless pinging

@Somewhat If we did, we wouldn't remember the end ;)
@πάνταῥεῖ Mister problem player has just been removed from here, so now I can start getting drunk too ;) whiskey and cola :)

I mostly like dutch people, unless they're getting into my way at the motorway during holiday seasons ;)
@Tinkeringbell Aww! Don't ever spoil whiskey with cola. I even blame waiters when they unintentionally serve me whiskey with ice or water :P

@πάνταῥεῖ It's cheap whiskey, it needs cola ;)
But since I'm getting out the whiskey: bye for now! Hungover me will ba available after 10am local time tomorrow ;)

6:47 PM
Don't ever drink cheap whiskey or the american bourban stuff (Making whiskey from corn is such a bad idea). Irish whiskey is somehow cheaper than scotch, and I even take on that lately (I've been on holidays in ireland recently). No cola, strictly!
@Tinkeringbell cya
LOL. That even looks like a pun: bourban
Don't give the actual american president any millimeter to intrude the goods we have already better on our own in europe!

7:11 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ thanks

@rene I even tried ;)

that is appreciated
probably the direct translation of Guten Apetit

@rene It was, yes

I know where you're coming from ;)

I'm not really in disguise ;)

At the end of the day, its an arbitrary count of imaginary internet points that vaguely reflect the time, effort and love you have put into a site ;)
Reputation points are good, please don't get me wrong, but there's a lot of people who put time, effort, and "love" (for some definition of love) into these sites and who don't get that recognized with reputation points.

8:18 PM
@AaronHall The quality of contribution when you post content can be measured. The quality of close votes and flags cannot be marked as "low quality". As such, there is no measurement of quality for the actions associated with putting time and effort into the actions you are describing.

8:29 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ thanks!

Why is my post about which topics the team has deemed unsuitable for Area 51 being downvoted so heavily? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315431/…

i would assume that people either disagree that it should be a faq, or find it not useful.
121
Q: I've just been downvoted. How should I react?

Andrew BarberI've posted a question or an answer, and I have received one or more downvotes. I am not really sure why I was down voted, or I think I know why, but I disagree. Why did this happen, and what should I do about it? Return to FAQ index

Unlike Journeyman Geek above, I value my Meta rep quite a bit. So, since I lost quite a lot of rep over it, I'm faced with a choice: I can keep the question there, but keep taking the hit for it, or delete the question and get the rep back, but then the info is no longer public.

As a question, it seems to lack research. There are only a few instances of that happening. "What are these topics, and why are such proposals no longer accepted" is basically a duplication of all of the existing content. There is a very large open-endedness about the question. It is written in such a way which is slightly verbose, and requires careful reading to parse. etc.
I didn't see it until you linked it, but that would be my feedback on why someone(s) may have downvoted.

8:45 PM
@TravisJ But many proposed FAQ questions are even broader, and they have been accepted. After receiving a close vote as "too broad", it was unanimously reviewed as "Leave Open" in the review queue.

Note that was not the only reason I gave.

Also, what's wrong with the answer?

i mean... a downvote doesn't necessarily indicate something is "wrong"

Moreover, the info is already public. I have the public dump from the startups exchange for example, so I was fairly aware of that one. The recommendations is kind of common knowledge. Foreign languages have been raised in several places, and the major ones are supported. In general, the languages with a strong user base got started.

@TravisJ Please read the last paragraph of the question, as well as this (10k-only): meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315435/…
@KevinB A downvote means people thought it was so bad that the author should lose rep for posting it.

8:47 PM
The intent is just wasted space in my opinion. Its use for future visitors will be determined over time, as is the standard for most faq posts.

no, a downvote means the post is not useful

@rene Do you think it's not useful? If so, why don't you think it's useful?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I don't think most people think of it that way.

As for having a duplicate target, those should be done on a case by case basis in this situation. There are already public discussions with regards to languages, recommendations, and startups (oh how I miss startups)

@Catija "I value my Meta rep quite a bit."
@TravisJ Many of those are on Area 51 Discussions, and as you probably know, there's no closing as cross-site duplicate.

8:49 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Not quite sure how that negates what I said.

While 0.01% of users may use downvotes as some sort of personal punishment, in general I strongly believe the vast majority of users vote purely on content and future usefulness.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I've seen you say that but that doesn't mean that everyone does.

@TravisJ Not necessarily. A perfectly well-written feature request can cause the author to lose rep if people don't like it.

That gets into usefulness though.
If users find a feature request useful, they will upvote it into oblivion

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I didn't down vote yet. I'm impartial at the moment. Not sure how such list would influence future outcomes of area 51 attempts. Will there be less on the same topic? More? Will they use it as a learning experience? I don't think MSE should be like wikipedia where every trivia is documented.

8:54 PM
As I've said so many times here, and I'll repeat again, I don't think that users should lose rep just for making an unpopular request.

That said, feature-request voting is its own beast. It still isn't voting based on user though.
Meh.. rep, not rep. If you are requesting something no one wants all the time, then how is that of use? If you are requesting something that users actively believe would harm the exchange, do you really deserve upvotes? Features are not supposed to be thrown out without a lot of research and thought. If you at least include research and thought to the point where it is obvious you spent a lot of time crossing all your t's and dotting all your i's, then most users will simply abstain from voting.

I think that that behavior makes the MSE community less inclusive. It turns into a popularity contest: people are actively incentivized to only post requests that you know others would agree with.

191
A: Can we talk about the voting culture here on Meta?

Shog9So I've been kinda chewing on this since your email, because... It's one of those simple questions that defies a simple answer. You're not the only person to raise this concern, of course: several respected users, moderators and even co-workers have expressed dismay upon seeing reasonable questio...

Can I ask all of you to be very reluctant in deleting your own messages? Or you must have been told you're rude or off-limits but beyond that there is no real need. And it takes me too many clicks to check what is going on. And I hate that as I'm lazy.
