@πάνταῥεῖ yum yum indeed!

Q: How could I have handled this better in chat (flag apparently led to suspension)?

Robert ColumbiaI was recently suspended in chat here on Meta.SE. I would like to know how I could have handled this situation better and avoided a suspension. Link to transcript: https://chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/89/conversation/suspended-due-to-a-flag I was in the Tavern on the Meta chatroom here on...

This is a little disturbing.
The whole situation, that is.

@forest ya. So... Shog's taken a break from the chat, Sonic might have....
and that's about it

That's good of him.
I would be far more appalled if he had stuck to his actions.
FWIW, this kind of drama is why I tend to avoid the large chat rooms...

@rene That is totally and utterly irrelevant, and a tu quoque fallacy at that. — forest 7 mins ago
So yeah, I saw that :P

10:09 PM
@forest ehh. Tbh, If you were a regular here, you'd understand ;p

Maybe. I've only seen Sonic be nothing but helpful, but you're right, I'm only here because of how horrified I am about the new site changes and the lack of transparency/acceptance of feedback from the community that Stack Exchange, Inc. is displaying. Regardless, even if he is a total hypocrite, that has no effect on the content of his message.

But ah. If you're here to avoid the drama... why are you here for the drama?

To hopefully make a change.
Better now than after the changes roll out to the sites I use.

A: Rollout of new network site themes

Draco18s status-declined This is not an implementation issue. We believe there is value in keeping the elements used for key interactions consistent across the sites. You don't interact with badges, so we thought that was an area we could give on. Just so we're clear... Custom badge icons are stayin...

This was what brought me here (well, this was what kept me here).

@forest probably, yes. all comments under that question are and even more so the comment upvotes.

@rene I don't see any other comments that are tu quoque (and I'm not sure how an upvote could even be one).

10:23 PM
sure, whatever.

:P
@JourneymanGeek So what exactly is there to understand? There must be some history I'm missing, but as it stands, I don't see any issues.

@forest "there must be some history I'm missing" summed up in said comment

So basically he's been pestering mods in the past and told to back off?

And other folks
Yes

hm

10:32 PM
So ya, it was harsh but eh, folks might have gotten fed up.
But if you didn't know that, you really can't go "it was totally unfair"

Wrt the tu quoque comment or the Shog9 incident?

I don't even know what tu quoque means

Noun: tu quoque
  1. (often attributive) An argument whereby an accusation or insult is turned back on the accuser.
  2. 1977, Alistair Horne, A Savage War of Peace, New York Review Books 2006, p. 205:
  3. In the long run, the facile tu quoque arguments, such as those offered by Massu on the Alleg case, can only lead to an endless escalation of horror and degradation.

It's a fallacy where, rather than explaining what's wrong with someone's claim, you say "oh yeah, but look at the things that you did!"

@forest lemme put it this way - there's often more context behind an incident like this than you'd know

10:34 PM
I'm done explaining things. if that is my fallacy, then so be it

if you see a meta post, immediately assume the folks regular to the chatroom are doing that...
erm, you're clearly coming to a conclusion too fast
But.. that's up to you
but this probably isn't helping the room ... well decompress after that.

Yeah, I may be, but even if Sonic was a serial offender, it wouldn't change his opinion that the shouting was disrespectful, it would just make him a hypocrite.
That's just my opinion, at least. Since I'm not a regular, I'll leave it at that. :P

Thank you

Y'all should be glad this isn't IRC :P
But anyway, what I actually came to this specific chat for was a quick question: Does something like this count as spam? security.stackexchange.com/q/192850/165253
It seems very likely that it's just downright trolling, but not explicitly advertisements.

@forest I don't think it does, no. It is worth a mod flag to ask if this account has been trolling before
It will roomba in 10 days. Unless the OP accepts that answer.
So I personally wouldn't answer those type of question. It could block automatic deletion if it gets an upvote.

10:49 PM
Yeah I didn't answer it (and will probably downvote the existing answer if it does get an upvote for that very reason). I'll raise a flag though, thanks.

You're welcome

Aren't questions auto-deleted if they hit -10? Or am I misremembering?

@forest No, they roomba: meta.stackexchange.com/help/roomba

Ah

the rules are a bit more complex then just score
but closing a question is one of the best ways to get stuff auto-removed.

10:57 PM
Also I just realized, on that Meta help center link, the very bottom link does not use HTTPS (unlike the one just above it).

seems like I missed quite a bit, but JG and rene seem to have it under control :p

depends on what you consider control

Hi Sonic :P

can take delete votes now

11:09 PM
Heh, made a popular answer on a few featured questions and apparently I'm now trusted enough to cast my own close votes for questions on Meta. :P

To be clear, for some time, I won't actively participate here unless I'm pinged or making a moderation request (e.g. [cv-pls], [delv-pls], [chaos-emerald-pls], etc.).

What do those tags mean? (total noob to Meta, sorry)

[cv-pls]: report a meta question that should be voted as blatantly off-topic, or another specified reason;
[delv-pls]: report a closed blatantly off-topic meta question for deletion votes;
[chaos-emerald-pls]: ping a specific user who's explicitly consented to such pings to use their "Chaos Emerald" (dupehammer) on a question;
[reopen-pls]: ping a user who used their Chaos Emerald to undo their use of it.
Tag markup for actual requests; brackets when just referring to them.

Ah, thanks.

11:25 PM
@Magisch I'm not sure if I already annoyed you with it but we have a SEDE chatroom with an occasional SEDE support request.
I leave the room in your hands, I'm out for the night.

11:43 PM
@Shog9 thank you. I really appreciate your candor and willingness to discuss. Would you be willing to add an answer to my question (or update your existing one)? I could mark that as accepted and we could consider the matter closed.
